  3. The ticking of the clock seemed ever present. It beat back and forth, almost hypnotically. Connie's head started bobbing to the rhythm. It was so relaxing to her. Even as the camp debated killing her, she couldn't keep her eyes off the clock. Sweat, and white condensation began pouring from her face. So this is what they were fighting for. The camp needed no further evidence, and quickly grabbed her. However, she had already passed on, with a smile on her lips. The first Forgotten had fallen. Vote Count: Condensation (6): Archer, StrikerEZ, Illwei, TJ Shade, Devotary of Spontaneity, Kasimir Gears (2): Araris Valerian, STINK Illwei (1): Ventyl Lotus (1): Shard of Reading Condensation has died. They were a Forgotten. Items Taken: Camp Supply: Player List: This Night will end on February 6th at 8 PM CST. The Strength of the Wild Chalklings is at 2.

  5. So I promised that I'd offer at least some of my thoughts, from my perspective, on this discussion. It's been over a week and I don't feel so bad about double-posting now. I think you've raised a number of questions/issues that are important to think about. What is not okay to do to win? How do we prioritise fun over pressure? What do we do about backstabbing? How can we practice thinking from others' perspectives? If we're imposing on other people, breaking the game, or harming them/not letting them have fun, I think that's a problem. I deleted this section a few times as it sounds very egotistical. But the historian in me says context is important - ideas and perspectives don't emerge, as it were, fully-formed like Athena from the head of Zeus. Our thoughts and ideas are often conditioned by our experiences, and who we are. So here we go I guess. You can skip this otherwise, it's a short 'about me/these are the SE things that stood out to me' thing.

  7. Aelyon paled as The Raveness raged infront of her thank goodness I've got this mask on. This is why people veer away from The Raveness, a loyal subject doesn't fear death from treason. But the girl was a royal nightmare to talk to. "What are you going to report to the King, that I was disappointed that you couldn't figure out who I was? To be honest I reckon he'd be more put off by your little episode of innocence than my poor behavior. Oh, and I honestly don't care about whether or not you take my companionability to heart, I was just trying to pay you back for what I have already gained out of this conversation." Aelyon honestly wouldn't mind taking the same fate as her son, but she had a duty to fulfill and a house to uphold, she grimaced at the thought. All that said, if purely being seen talking to the Raveness was potentially enough to start lifting up her reputation, then imagine the attention a shouting match with the formidable woman would get her! The Raveness was right, no matter what niceties were shared in this conversation Aelyon hated the women who had taken her son from her with the fury of a river's rapids tearing through a valley in flood. Lending that son her love had been one of her greatest mistakes, a lapse in judgement that she only had herself to hate for taking; her hatred for The Raveness however, was less about the death of her son and more about the poisonous grief it had sent her lord husband into. The grief The Raveness had caused by killing Lieno was what sparked Lord Hvenkar's alcohol addiction that caused the embarrassment and the mess that Aelyon now had to dig them out of. She had married into Hvenkar in hopes of money and popularity, and thanks the Raveness, Hvenkar had become a squalling mess, an embarrassment of a household. She took a step backwards and aggressed her stance. A tear slid slipped out of her eye, obscured from view by her blessed mask as she remembered what this woman had taken from her; her son, her husband, her power, her riches, her popularity, everything. Aelyon channelled her torrent of rage into a whirlpool and lifted her volume so her voice carried across the room; she had nothing more to lose.....right? "And I think you should sulk less about me giving you compliments, feinted or not, because you" She jabbed a manicured nail at The Raveness "are friendless, you're always alone, you don't belong here, you belong in the shadows where no one has to see you. I'll have you know that your power is just as empty as my compliments. Yes! you might intimidate us plotting courtiers, but that's not the only reason we avoid you! Bloody ashes you'll report me to the King, the stench of your entitlement is what keeps us away from you."

  9. Week 5 Poem # 5 Coronation? The mountains crumble beneath my feet and the cosmos are nullified by my every breath. Kingdoms cry out and drown the mortal plane in sounds that I drink with the relish of one who has known nothing but thirst. City walls shatter before me in wonderful ways that grant me ever more power. My voice rings out over all taking for itself a throne that I consider anathema. Rage burning and unending lashes out and scorches she who bore me as I prepare for war. Terrible usurpers come to take that which is mine by birthright though they rightfully tremble as I rise to meet them. A blinding bolt bleeds the sky dry of the purest ichor and throws across my back a lash which nicks my flesh as only the slightest of cuts. From the upper regions comes a false lord whose avarice raised me from the dust to be his destroyer. I swat him down, striking him without mercy, and tear trenches that reach into my father’s very being to paint the world in ancient blood. Waves and mother’s trembling seek to wound me. A second brother chills me with powers that embolden my anger. Iron daggers tear into him as I smite him when he gets close enough to see the spirit of death in my eyes. He is tossed about and his golden toy falls away from his grasp. Fire streams about me as I set loose the might of the flames that rest in the heart of she who gave me life. We are wreathed in thick burning clouds as the last one comes to do battle. Upon his brow is a helm that stuns me where I stand. Horrific things that I cannot even describe appear before me. Ice robs my form of all strength and when I lash out it is feeble as one just born. Renewed vigor quickly returns to me as I teach him fear. Vast forests are splinters when his body is unable to escape my wrath. His bones and those of his brothers creak filling the world with the sweetest of melodies. Sweat, blood, and tears fall as libations to one who would not have them. As one they turn on me. Crashing drums fused with jagged spears maul me in concert with exploding earth and icy blades that are peeling my flesh. Every step that I take is now in retreat. As night flees and dawn comes a final contest does begin. The one who stands upon the air alone does fight this day. Bolts of silver fire burn me as razor winds tear most into me most deeply. Hailstones prepare my burial as I fall into the depths with vengeance in my mind. An inferno smokes as the father of all monsters plots to rise again.

  12. Background So, I have just finished a reread of Elantris and something caught my eye. When the city was in its full glory enchanted items based on Aons made by Elantrians were used for a plethora of things that made the city more comfortable, light, plumbing, etc. As I thought on this a theory came to my mind, now I could be completely off base so please bear with me. One aspect of these items that caught my attention were aons put in people's homes such as the one for light (Ashe). Given that many non elantrians also lived in the city I assume they were also capable of using the ashe aon to alter the lighting in their rooms. Otherwise they would have to call an elantrian in to do it for them, which sound very inconvenient. So I began to wonder if they could utilize these enchanted items could this be expanded upon further? I should specify I don't mean that those non elantrians made the aon, but rather were able to utilize what was already present as made by the Elantrians. The Theory Essentially I began to wonder what would happen if Sel advanced far enough to enter the computer age? Could computers that were crafted specifically by Elantrians then be used to form Aons? Potentially even Aons useable by anyone as the initial creation would have been done by an Elantrian. If this proves impossible, as the idea of normal people using the enchanted items is speculation on my part. There is still a possibility of Elantrians being able to rapidly expedite their casting via a form of automation. Weak Points to The Theory I am aware that while Elantrians could use tools such as quills, sticks, etc to make aons and they still functioned. Ultimately they needed to use their intent as part of the process. I also concede that I may be completely off base in assuming that the Aons will function without being directly made by an Elantrian. Either way I thought the idea was interesting and I hope you do as well. Afterword Thank you for bearing with me there. I would love any and all thoughts on the theory, and look forward to the discussion.

  21. Not the Elantrians themselves--I think the Seons are the better comparison. The Seons bonded to a "broken" Elantrian (how do we not have a term for them??) all exhibit the following: Their minds aren't entirely there. Same for deadeyes. They're sapient beings that seem to have lost their intelligence. The Aon symbols at their center appear broken up. Similarly, the deadeyes show visible signs of not looking right. They loosely follow around the human they are bonded to. Just as deadeyes follow the human they are bonded to in Shadesmar. Might be some other things not coming to mind? My general suspicion is that it's a Connection issue. Elantrians were "broken" because the chasm disrupted their Connection to the Dor. And those effects seem to extend to the Seon they are deeply Connected to with a bond. So how does that relate to the spren? BAM was Connected to the singers and we saw that her capture damaged their Connection. The mechanics behind that are a bit of a mystery though... In any case, perhaps this Unmade was Connected to all spren on Roshar as well, (maybe dating back to before she was even Unmade) so her imprisonment broken their Connection too? But then why did it only affect them after Radiants broke oaths? Could guess that their bond with a stable human served as a lifeline for them, but it's still kind of weird. And what about the spren who weren't bonded? Is it possible that they were ALL (every last one of them??) bonded at the time of the Recreance? I feel like there's a lot of mysteries to be unraveled here, but I'm trying to work through my reread before getting in the weeds of this theorizing. XD

  22. Brandon once said that we have already seen how the Stormlight Archive ends, which clearly is in one of the death rattles. I strongly believe it to be the the Ketek at the end of The Way of Kings The final shot of the Stormlight Archive will be an empty, silent Roshar as the Highstorm and the Everstorm clash and wither out, with silence both below and above. More detailed thoughts: (I am not going to be able to find citations, but if anyone can help, I'll add them to the post). 1. Erosion: the geologic process in the formation of Roshar has been the steady deposition of crem during Highstorms. The entire continent is largely crem upon crem, which is why the entire thing is so insanely metal poor. And while the Highstorm has incredible erosive effects, it deposits more material on net than it takes away. The arrival of the Everstorm changes the calculus. We saw in the final fight of Words of Radiance that when the two storms clashed, the forces were enough to send entire plateaus hundreds of feet into the air. The erosion from this (and even from just the Everstorm, which wears away without bringing back) will start to wash Roshar into the sea. Brandon spoke of this animation of the Julia Set as the inspiration for the shape of Roshar. I think there's more than just the shape; the growth and decay of the shape seem appropriate to the crem-building and eventual erosive weathering of Roshar. 2. The story will not end with everybody on Roshar dead, simply with the entire sapient population evacuated through the Perpendicularity. I don't believe Brandon wants to end this series on a true tragedy (i.e., the complete failure of the anti-Odium forces). And yet the Roshar system is the focus for so much of the conflict within the Cosmere. It seems silly (on a Doylist writer-based level) to have the series end with "Odium is still trapped in Roshar" since we still need some conflict involving the reassembly of Adonalsium. And since Odium has no intention of becoming not-Odium, there needs to be a way for him to get out somehow. Plus, it lets us have our Favorite Rosharan Characters showing up on different worlds. (I desperately want Lift and Wayne to be friends. Wayne is the second most Edgedancer character we have met this entire series, and both Lift and Wayne are weird in part because of a trauma in their past, and are also actively trying to be weird, for better or worse. I think they will understand each other, be really good friends at a totally normal level, and help each other move past some of their other problems.) I also cannot see Wax or Nalan having any patience for each other, and it would be glorious. This is also going to be where the Checkov's gun of "something something Horneater Peaks, outsiders, something something" actually goes off with a bang. 3. Thematic parallels This leaves open the possibility of a "The Real Asgard is the People" ending, where there is a massive loss (the entire planet is uninhabitable, Odium is loose), but still a victory from the perspective of everyone we care about (Life placed before Death). The Stormlight Archive is the Journey, not the Destination. Roshar slowly wearing away into the sea (a process we will discover has become noticed and studied after our 5/6 timeskip) will be thematically paralleled with the Radiants slowly losing ground to the forces of Odium, at least on Roshar. The Storms are central to the story of Roshar (Stormlight Archive). The proscribe the actions of all the characters, where they can go, how they can move, what gives them power. I believe that there will be a thematic arc of the Storms themselves that parallels that of the characters, with the relative balance of the Highstorm and Everstorm being an in-universe metaphor for the progress of the war. I have a couple of additional thoughts, but they are specifically referencing things learned in Rhythm of War. I'm hiding them under spoilers, because I think this theory holds regardless (I've held it since the end of Words of Radiance, but there are new points that reinforce it). Mods, if you'd like me to move the post, I'd be happy to. Point 1: Point 2:

  23. I didn't know if I needed to indicate this in a RoW board, but just in case: This post contains cosmere spoilers. Disclaimer: Below, I state some things as if they are facts, although they are merely part of my theory. This is just to make it easier for me to present the ideas, and is not meant to indicate total confidence. Static Investiture - Has passive properties Breaths Godmetals Spiritwebs Metalminds Kinetic Investiture - Can act as a fuel for Invested arts Lights The Dor Static Investiture doesn't do much on its own. However, static Investiture can be converted to other types of static Investiture. For example, upon burning Lerasium, one's Connection to Preservation increases in such a way that also turns them into a Mistborn. This Connection is then part of the Spiritweb. This effect also leads to a major connection between static and kinetic Investiture: Connection to a Shard in the right way allows one to make use of that Shard' s corresponding kinetic Investiture. In Allomancy's case, we see in Secret History that metals glow in the Cognitive Realm, due to them being a window to power In the Spiritual Realm (why metals don't appear to glow in the Rosharan subastral is unclear with our given explanation). An Allomancer's increased Connection to Preservation allows them to make use of Preservation's kinetic Investiture, which Preservation provides through this window. Breaths work similarly. When an Awakener Awakens an object, the Breath provides a stronger Connection to Endowment, allowing the object to make use of Endowment's kinetic Investiture. In this case, rather than how the Investiture is used being determined by the type if metal, it is determined by the Command given. This is why Awakeners can't just Freely access kinetic Investiture from Endowment. Without the proper Commands, they can't actually access Endowment's Investiture. Venli's case is much more interesting. Her form of power gives her enough Connection to Odium to allow her to use Voidlight. However, this does not give her access to it; rather, the power to draw in the Light she uses comes from her surgebinding. Having a Connection to Odium, the ability to draw in Light she can use, and the ability to surgebind means that she can then draw in Voidlight to fuel surgebinding. The fused also have those three requirements, although in Venli's case, the latter two of those requirements come from being a Radiant. Either way, the requirement for Voidlight-fueled surgebinding are met. Static Investiture can also be converted to kinetic Investiture, and vice-versa, although we do not know many methods of doing so. The simplest example is Shardblades. Spren are usually in a kinetic Investiture form, as seen by their ability to charge sand, but when in Shardblade form, they are composed of static Investiture instead. Another example is Feruchemy, as the attributes should be kinetic Investiture in transfer. Similarly, Breaths also seem to take a kinetic form while being transferred. Now, for the most dependent part, and consequently the part I doubt the most. What is the Mist? It is a mixture between static and kinetic Investiture, displaying properties of both. Taking in the Mist allowed Vin to Ascend to Preservation, but it also acted as a fuel for Allomancy. Vin did not need the metals, since the window to the Spiritual Realm the usually provides was in the Mist. That would not be enough alone, however, since the metal is also used to tell the Investiture what task it needs to perform. This is accomplished through a combination of Intent and the static portion of the Mists, similar to how Breaths work. Later, in Era 2, Marasi uses the Bands of Mourning and finds Mist coming from her. Without knowing the specifics behind an unsealed metalmind's creation, this effect is hard to comment on. It may be the kinetic portion of the Mists, the static portion, or both. Nicrosil Feruchemy in particular is unclear in its exact effects. TL,DR: Kinetic Investiture acts as a fuel, while static Investiture gives only passive effects. A sufficient Connection allows one to make use of the corresponding kinetic Investiture, and this Connection is usually given by static Investitiure.

  25. Brandon said in the livestream that the deadeye spren is a relashonship that has been seen in other parts of the cosmere. My mind immediately jumped to elantrians. The elantrians had their investiture and their link to the Dor blocked because the command was incomplete. Because it was incomplete, they had sickly blotches, had no heartbeat, and could not heal. They themselves said that they were dead. That is what is happening to the deadeyes. Their command allowing them to exist or transition to their unbonded state or whatever happens after they break their bond is being interrupted mid-transition. This would explain the dead and clawed out eyes. This would explain why they seem to not access investiture or do anything with bonds. Ba-Ado-mishram Somehow allowed that transition to happen, so trapping her interrupted the command, just like with Elantris.

  26. Hello everyone, I am grateful for this board and such a great and massive community. It has been very helpful browsing both the forums and the Coppermind. I just started reading Sanderson the beginning of January per request of my friend who has been pushing me to start reading for quite some time now. Glad I have finally taken the plunge. So far I have read the first Mistborn trilogy and Warbreaker. I started Elantris last night and also picked up Arcanum Unbound from the book store. After Elantris and a few short stories I will then take the next big plunge into the Stormlight Archives series. I am very excited to do so, and I was very fortunate to find the first 3 books in the free bin at my local 2nd and Charles store. I have been more careful lately to avoid spoilers as I made the mistake w too much browsing while reading Warbreaker and learned of a betrayal before it happened. Also for future reading, I've spoiled a bit from discovering names who end up being world hoppers. So from now on I plan to be more cautious of my browsing. Long story short, I'm happy to be here and I thank you for having me.

  28. @BenduLuke three things. First, keep an eye on your multi-posting. You might catch a moderator's eye on that. Second, this thread isn't really a discussion on what is or isn't a resonance, maybe another thread would be appropriate? I don't mean to backseat-moderate, but at this point it's a matter of time until a real one shows up to say the same thing, haha. Thirdly, I kinda want to contest the whole "F-iron subtle change in gravity" thing, because the keyword there is subtle. The Earth's mass is 597,219,000,000,000,000,000,000 kilograms. (give or take a "0" ;P). Human mass varies widely but averages to about 70. The earth's gravitational acceleration is 9.8 m/s^2. A human's gravitational acceleration is 0.000000000000000000000114 m/s^2. Go ahead and multiply that by 100 like Wax did. Now assume an Iron Compounder-let's be generous and give them a factor of a million. A iron compounder's gravitational force is 0.000000000000001 m/s^2 for an object touching their skin. Try giving them a factor of a hundred million, which is utterly insane but sure. You now have a 7 BILLION kilogram human that STILL has an almost imperceptible gravitational pull. The compounder is going to crack stone and sink into the planet's crust and fall into the mantle, and it still won't even slightly nudge a bullet. EDIT: This is why when I think of an iron-compounder, I'm thinking of kinetic weapons. The sheer blunt force these people could potentially unleash has massive destructive potential, but is also incredibly dangerous to the people themselves. However, ettmetal fabrials built around the abilities of Iron Compounders could accomplish wonderful things.

  29. Hey Quinn, nice name update! I feel bad hitting Flyingbooks when they're blue busy, so I'm willing to switch to Connie, even though I think both are elims. Out of Illwei and Connie, Mat's money was on the latter. Now here comes the moral dilemma. The rules say no using outside information about a person to judge their gameplay. But Connie has repeatedly stated in games that they don't lie in SE. So I feel okay using that meta to speculate that when they said "I'm definitely evil" they were telling the truth, full stop. Come, join me Striker! Take the low hanging fruit! Connie Flyingbooks

  33. Unpopular opinions; 1. The story has become glacially slow (politics in OB,and then fabrial science in this one) nothing much happened in the book (or the time skip seemingly) 2. Cosmere is talking up to much of the story now 3. Navani - being so naive to the point wasnt believable 4. The view of the world is becoming smaller and smaller each book, 5. They left herdaz fight alone, cos assumed they would lose even though kept holding out, meaning with support they might not of lost atal 6. Navani bonding the sibling, thought this was a terrible idea, leaves Adolin the only radiant worthy of all the kholins the only one who actually isn't even though stormlight archive is now the kholin chronicles 7. The nodes - 90s video game stuff 8. Wit - is in the story too much plus i don't overly like him like everyone else seemingly does 9. Not enough pov/radiants - sure we see there is more, but no interations, no stonewards etc 10. Rlain - finally gets to bond a spren but wait its a corrupted one (figures)

  34. My understanding (please correct me where I’m mistaken) is that deadeyes, in the Cognitive Realm, are drawn towards the Physical Realm location of the human who has bonded them, but they can be elsewhere, and they are limited to walking speed in following. Captain Ico comments “they’ll walk right off the deck and into the ocean, looking for the human who holds their corpse.” When a shardblade is summoned by its holder, the spren disappears from the CR (RoW ch. 75). My assumption is that when a shardblade is dismissed the spren returns to the CR in the corresponding analogue of that PR location. Thus Testament would have been at the Davar home when Shallan left to find Jasnah. Once Shallan boarded a vehicle moving faster than a walking deadeye, Testament was left behind. She tried to follow, and ended up on an island, probably close to the Shattered Plains. There she was found and cared for by her old friend, the inkspren shopkeeper, on the shores of the bead ocean nearest to Urithiru (RoW ch. 29).

  35. There's this: And yes, I think other people could use Elantrian made devices. The light Aon as well as the maker of the object providing the necessary Intent to make a magitech function provide good support to that supposition.

  41. I'm going to do some wild theorizing here, so hold on: First, spren exist mostly in the Cognitive realm. When they bond a Radiant, the spren is pulled into the physical realm. This mechanism is clearly still working. Second, when a Radiant dies, the spren either returns to the Cognitive realm or bonds a new Radiant. We saw this with the one Honorspren in WoR. Third, when an oath is broken, the spren's body materializes as a Shardblade. At least part of the Cognitive aspect returns to the Cognitive realm as a deadeye. We see this with both Maya and Testament. Fourth, this separation of physical and Cognitive did not occur prior to the Recreance. The spren expected pain, but not death. Fifth, this is roughly the same time at which Cuseicash the Protector began to appear. This megaspren appears at the same time every day, and looks toward the Origin. It drains something from each person who views it. Sixth, this is similar to the Shaod, where the Elantrians were trapped midway through transformation. Seventh, this all began at approximately the same time as BAM was captured. Eighth, Honor's tone was silenced that day. Based on this, we can draw a few conclusions: 1. Whatever happened has blocked the ability of a spren to fully transition back to the Cognitive realm when oaths are broken. 2. This is related to the capture of BAM. In order to do this, Melishi had to understand BAM to a very large degree. 3. At roughly the same time, Cusiecash began appearing and displaying a series of faces. This spren faces the Origin, which is connected to the highstorms and by extension to Honor. 4. Therefore, we can conclude that the capture of BAM somehow damaged the Connection of all spren to Honor's tone. 5. My theory out of all this is as follows: Melishi swapped BAM's Connection to Odium for Honor, and used that to imprison her. When doing so, though, Melishi unknowingly damaged the conduit that Connected the spren to Honor, prohibiting their return to the Cognitive Realm. The part of the spren that was not able to return formed Cusiecash, where they display the faces of their Radiants. These spren are trying to draw out Investiture to rebuild the Connection to Honor. The Recreance occurred because this severing also removed Honor's restrictions on Surgebinding.
