  2. I haven't seen this posted elsewhere so I hope I'm not breaking any rules by doing so. The sample chapters of RoW are up on IBooks and while obviously textually we get nothing new we do get three very cool new illustrations we haven't seen before. The first is from Shallan's Sketchbook and is called The Atrium. The second is from Navani's Notebook and is called The Fourth Bridge. The third is also from Navani's Notebook and is called The Arnist Method. These are at least to me really cool visualisations but I'm sure to those with the time and the willingness to do so the latter two will also be an opportunity to translate some more of the Alethi woman's speech - would be particularly awesome to know what the notes to the third say I imagine.

  3. I recently met someone who I’m convinced is the irl Jake Peralta. This dude is in his 30s and used to be in the military, here are some quotes from him: ”CHEEZE-ITS OH MY GOSH CAN I HAVE SOME” *completely serious* “Groot is from Millennials of the Galaxy, right?” *about neighbor’s cat* “Her name is Skittles but I call her Lady Skittles cause she’s old.” This dude is amazing

  4. I would just like to take a moment to remember the greatest game show host of all time: Alex Trebek. Jeopardy was my childhood. I learned so much random--but good--stuff on that show. It was a fun activity that I would do with my family, and brought us closer together. So I'd like to thank Mr. Trebek for that. Rest in peace Alex.

  5. Sigzil is mentioned, along with Kaladin and Teft, as having said the traditional "I legit hate this person" form of the Third Oath, and I wonder who exactly aroused his ire. "Storm it, I gave them the Voidbringer Attack Evacuation Forms, not a single one of them is in formation, they're not even fully packed-- serve them right if I just left them there for the Fused... *sigh* No, I must rescue even those who didn't bother to read Section 32(b)..." *icy glyphs* THESE WORDS ARE ACCEPTED.

  7. Phew! Finally done. As far as I have seen, there are next to zero memes about Skyward, so I made some! I also may or may not have been waiting to use this template for nearly a month, which I realized today fits perfectly with Skyward . (Minor Spoilers for Skyward) edit: I should probably mention that the lego M-bot was made by @Zath. Hope you don't mind me borrowing it!

  8. Beware, Wax & Wayne (particularly Bands of Mourning) spoilers below. As I reread the passage where Rysn interacts with the mural/Dawnshard, I couldn't shake the sense that we'd read about something similar before. Near the beginning of Bands of Mourning, we learn that a kandra named ReLuur had been searching for the mythical bands and returned to Elendel with a number of pictures documenting his search. Among the images were the following: A mural depicting a room with a central dais. On the dais is a pedestal, and set upon the pedestal was a pair of bracers made of delicate, curling metal, shaped in spirals (a depiction of what they thought were the Bands of Mourning) A picture of a large metal plate set into a wall and inscribed with a strange script. Neither Wax nor any of the kandra present recognize the script Another shot of the strange language A picture of a statue that resembled the Lord Ruler, bearing a long spear Another shot of the mural, more detailed, which depicted bracers with many different metals twining together Another image, of a different mural, depicting a man standing atop a peak, hands raised above him and a glowing spear hovering there, just beyond his touch. A corpse slumped at his feet. The face of the man in the mosaic had eyes upturned and lips parted as if in awe at what he held. He wore the bracers on his arms. We learn toward the end of the book that the pictures were taken at the Sovereign's Temple. Wax sees the same murals and the statue. (There's no mention in the later scene of whether the metal plate is also present, but it seems a fairly safe assumption). What's more we learn some new information about the pedestal in the temple - specifically that it features, prominently, the colors red and gold. The temple also features a number of booby traps and decoys. We learn that the real Bands of Mourning are not the bracers but a spearhead hidden in the statute's spear. And it is at least heavily implied that the mural depicting a person is likely Kelsier, and not the Lord Ruler. So if you're playing Dawnshard connections bingo we've got: fancy murals located in hard-to-reach places featuring the colors red and gold; protected by decoys and booby traps; featuring strange languages not recognized by our main characters; hidden powerful magic objects; and murals that are associated with characters who have heard commands in their minds (CHANGE for Rysn, and SURVIVE for Kelsier) Could be nothing. But it's Brandon so it could also be something. Is this perhaps evidence that our old pal Kel has maybe been involved with a Dawnshard at some point as well? Lastly, not sure how this fits in, if at all, but there was another prominent shout-out to the red/gold color scheme back in Alloy of Law. Here's the scene in the epilogue when Miles is executed: Anyway, just wanted to put this out there because it seems like a significant number of similarities.

  11. Hello fellow beings of the shard! I have been told that I should put these things on a forum, so I shall. this is a place where I ask ridiculous questions I asked to newcomers of the shard to the general public, because everyone should get a chance to answer them. since this is my the first time, I shall put two. 1. If you were to put a nunchuck wielding nun anywhere in the cosmere and have it gain something from that planet’s magic system, which planet would you put it on? 2. Which of Brando Sando’s books do you think would be more interesting if it had a house containing a little girl that fell and crushed a witch in it?

  14. An interesting connection that occurred to me, that I haven't seen discussion about in the wake of Dawnshard: I think we might now have all the puzzle pieces to put together the origins of Soulcasters (the fabrial-like devices). They are ancient tools that modern artifabrians have been unable to replicate. We know based on Jasnah's hypothesizing that the ancient humans did not have long lost knowledge: Shardblades, Shardplate, Soulcasters were not created by humans but received via some other, magical means. We've known there is some tenuous connection between Soulcasters and Akinah based on the Kaza interlude from Oathbringer: the Liaforan Soulcaster thinks about a rumor amongst Soulcasters that links them to the abandoned city. She believes there might be some knowledge or power there to cure her of the effects that prolonged use of a Soulcaster has on an individual. In Dawnshard, Nikli tells Rysn that the Soulcasters are kept “out of reverence, as they were offerings to the Ancient Guardians long ago.” So, again we have a connection between Soulcasters and Akinah (via the larkin, which are linked to the island as evidenced by their needing to return and bond the specific mandra variant that exists there). Now, this might be the source of the rumor that drives Kaza to seek out Akinah (I don't think it is, but can't be sure)--but either way, it opens up another question: why do the Sleepless view Soulcasters as offerings to the larkin (I don't imagine the larkin can use them, except for maybe eating the stormlight within the gemstones). I don't have a good answer to this, but it further strengthens the link between Soulcasters and Akinah/the Ancient Guardians. And this is central to my theory: because now we know that the secret hidden on Akinah, the thing the Ancient Guardians were protecting, is one of the Dawnshards; specifically, the one that encapuslated “The will of a god to remake things, to demand they be better.” And what is it that Soulcasters do? Well--pretty much that, if only at a smaller scale! So here's my theory: this Dawnshard of Change was used to create the Soulcasters. Someone (or some divinity) wielded the Dawnshard to imbue the power of Change into these devices, enabling individuals to use the power of transformation without requiring the Nahel bond or Honorblade. Tinfoil hat theory extension: I'm thinking Honor was the one who used the Dawnshard to create the Soulcasters. Based on a comment from Brandon on the Dawnshard megathread: "Soulcasting via a fabrial is way, way less dangerous than Radiant soulcasting--which is in turn far less dangerous than unbound soulcasting (meaning without oaths.)" It seems like the degree of "oaths" or perhaps bonds on the usage of Soulcasting makes it less dangerous. The Honorblades that grant the Soulcasting ability require no oaths to use, and so have great power; Radiant Soulcasters are bound by their oaths, rendering their ability safer; but the Soulcasters are much more limited in their application, often only able to perform one type of Soulcasting. So, it makes sense to me that Honor had some role in creating the Soulcasters, making them safer to use.

  17. So, funny story. I was going on a hike with my family when we passed a rope swing that went over a river. My sister, being the adventurer she is wanted to go swing on it. My mom, (For whatever reason) let her do it. So, my sister gets on the swing and basically long story short she fell in the water. This isn't the worst that that would have ever happened but... When she came up out of the water her glasses were missing. Fortunately the water was only about waist deep. Unfortunately it's fall, and rope swings are typically hung from trees. It took us like an hour in really cold water to find it. But personally I think we finished at just the right time because just as we found it, a big red pickup truck came around the corner. It had a custom license plate (The Duck) and it had a custom hood ornament (A big white dusk flexing) and when it honked it's horn it... quacked. It was one of the best things I have ever seen.

Does his curse to not be able to physically harm people also extend to animals, and therefore he cannot eat them? the most alarming and depressing part of this is this fact we have known for a while, quote: I know someone brought this up on the Reddit q and a already, but I needed to get this off my chest

When she started feeling sick later on, she decided to send her odd tasting food in for testing. 31. So nice of you! Thanks to encouragement from you all (amazing people) I had the guts to tell the director (like the boss of my boss). I basically told him that this is an insufferable environment and if he values my work he will make it right so I can continue. I got a promotion, I got a pay rise and then my boss and the other boss talked to my coworker (and they yelled at him and told him he would get fired) and he honestly apologized that he always worked only with dudes and it never actually occurred to him that this may be an issue. But what is more important, he is honesty behaving without a problem ever since and he is genuinely nice to me but not in a creepy way. Also, they stressed to me that promotion and money are not to shut me up but to show me they really, really value my work. TL TR: Douche got a wake-up call and I have peace and quiet and more money. But I literally could not have done this without you. I don't say it as empty "thanks" but only because of your support I had the courage to talk about it with higher management. So thank you! I mean it....

  32. Assuming a stride equals between 2.1 and 2.5 feet, the steps would be between 21 and 25 feet tall. The Heralds have, roughly, the same proportions as an average human would. Depending on the particulars of the stairs, they may have a smooth vertical surface or a detailed surface capable of providing handholds. Either way, no human being is going to be able to crawl up such a staircase. If we instead interpret the viewpoint of this poem to be that of a small creature, with comparatively small strides, things begin to make much more sense. From the perspective of a creature with a stride of 1 inch, we can envision a scenario in which the Heralds could actually walk up the steps that were, after all, crafted for them. Dysian hordelings are usually about the size of a finger, and can be as large as a fist. Crawling. There is a forthcoming novella named Dawnshard that is set in Aimia. Dysian Aimians, also known as Sleepless, are a sapient non-human race found on Roshar that once lived in the Silver Kingdom of Aimia. Hordelings fit within the perfect size-range to provide plausibility to an otherwise strange statement, they are a sentient life-form capable of carrying out the actions described in the poem, and they originate from the one place on Roshar that is specifically tied to Dawnshards. The Poem of Ista is written about a Dysian Aimian, from the perspective of a Dysian Aimian.

  33. If it is not too much trouble I would like help making this. There are a large number of missable details that I think should be noted down. I will try to keep this limited to directly stated facts and things we can deduce directly. Some of it will probably turn out to be wrong in some way but this is still not a place for theories. The Fused. Dalinar claims that their are nine types of fused and although we do not know how he knows this it is confirmed by Leshwi. Each order is called a brand in their own language. Kaladin currently believes he has fought seven of the nine orders. Unlike the radiants each fused uses one surge. None of the fused seem to have any kind of body taboo and although at least some have some hygienic rituals they do not appear to care for sex when choosing a body. Venli also notes that the fused each have their own history/mythology and are irritated that the modern singers don't know them. The fused have a complex hierarchy with the nine at the top. Other fused are permitted to speak but not to vote, there are around a hundred of these, and some other fused are granted special privileges. Fused Orders Shanay-im, Those Ones of Heveans are the order we currently know most about. They are often seen as analogous to the Windrunners. Venli translates their name as Those Ones of The Heavens. A friend of mine who knows some ancient Hebrew says that im is usually a suffix and it plurals a word and Shanay sounds a bit like the word for sky or heaven. Venli notes that the Shanay-im are among the most stable fused although Moash has met several mad ones. The Shanay-im use the surge of gravitation with great skill although Kaladin notes they must be more frugal with their light then the Windrunners and can't change speed as quickly. Fannahn-im, the Altered Ones are another order of fused. They use the surge of transformation or soulcasting. They are builders responsible for creating the new palace at Kholinar. Nex-im, Those Ones of Husks are a very small group of fused. The surge they use transportation. Their name seems in reference to the fact that as they translocate they leave behind shells of themselves that quickly disintegrate. Lezian is the only one Venli has seen in over a year. Mavset-im,Those Ones of Masks are the order of fused that is often compared to the Lightweavers. We saw one of them during OB attempting to steal Honor's Drop but they are secretive and rarely spotted. Shetel-im, The Flowing Ones manipulate abrasion. One was scene at the battle of Theylen fields. Makay-im, or Those Ones of Depths are the fused that manipulate cohesion. We might call them a stoneward parallel although this is not a particularly accurate comparison. They are interesting as they phase through stone in order to move falling through it slightly and then using "buoyancy" to push themselves in a given direction. The last Fused brand we know include one type that manipulates progression. One was seen during OB at the battle of Theylan Fields and M**** saw one making a saw. Individual fused Leshwi is a fused from the order of the shanay-im. According to Venli she is respected because of her prowess as a fighter and her maintaining a rational mind. Venli also notes that Leshwi maintains a status that is just barley important. Enough to have her opinions considered but not enough that she is deemed essential. Leshwi admits to being impressed by Windrunners(both radiant and spren) and Kaladin in particular. She prefers to defend innocents and when hearing the spren have forgiven the singers for their transgression changes sides. Lezian the Pursuer is a fused from the order of nex-im. According to legend he was the first fused to be killed by a human and after being reborn went to kill only the man who killed him. He has done this every desolation and from it the tradition has been formed that any fused who is killed by a human in battle may claim that human as a quarry. Leshwi finds this unprofessional and foolish as his missions often undermine careful plans. He is also prideful and refuses to acknowledge his own mistakes or failings even going so far as to lie about important events in a manner that could be detrimental to the war effort. Kaladin is the first human to kill him twice and in doing so breaks the legend. Raboniel, Lady of Wishes/Pain is a fused of the Fannahn-im. She was one of the nine before deciding the government was too hampering to her projects. Leshwi relates that she chose her current name Lady of Wishes after deciding that she did not like her old one. She was apparently responsible for bio-warfare in the past that killed many people on both sides. Her interests include Urithiru and the connection between Radiants, their oaths, their spren, and their Surges. The suppression fabrail was made based on knowledge she obtained from Urithiru in prior desolations. She believes that her "natural talents" and "gifts of Odium" will allow her to corrupt and use the Sibling itself and is proven correct. However despite Leshwi's worries Raboniel was not fighting for anything but rather against the desolation. She just wanted things to end one way or the other so that both peoples would no longer have to suffer. Jeshishin is a shanay-im of around the same rank as Leshwi. He speaks at the council. Zandiel is a fused most likely of the shanay-im. Leshwi uses him to provide sketches of the fourth bridge. El is a mysterious and high ranking fused who does not have a title. It has been mentioned it was given to another. He may have predicted Rayse's fall to Taravangian and is glad to serve a new master. He is also responsible for transmitting Raboniel's anti-honor light to the other fused. The Singers Singer Forms. There is apparently some difference between forms of power and regular forms. The rules for distinguishing are not yet known although they are important to singer society. Envoyform allows a singer to understand most languages and even things like expressions or tones. Envoyform is made by a singer bonding an unknown type of voidspren. The form is tall and has a great deal of distinctive carapace that acts more as ornamentation then armor. This is described as a form of power held by those called regals. Stormform allowed the listeners to summon the everstorm. It is made possible by bonding a stormspren, a verity of voidspren. It is a common combat form used by singers for its ability to create lightning. It is implied by Ulim that these are also forms of power. Artform is granted by a singer bonding a creationspren. This form may grant an artistic aptitude. Warform is made with a painspren and grants aggression, strength, and carapace armor. Mateform is made with an unknown spren. It grants sexual attraction and the ability to bear children. Eshonai noted that most couples who want a child will adopt this form and then sequester themselves. The spren needed for this form are lifespren. Workform grants endurance. Eshonai preferred this form as did those who wished to do heavy labor. The spren bonded is gravityspren. Dullform is what happens when a spren that does not grant a real form is bonded. It is virtually indistinguishable from a parshemen and impedes the mind. Nimbleform is used for non intensive labor. The singers used this for their scholars and other work not requiring endurance. Other Singer Things The fused know how to build towers that Venli believes should fall over. Rlain showed the Alethi how to use stormlight to grow food in an inhospitable environment by beating a drum to a rhythm that attracts lifespren with infused gemstones nearby. The Tones Their are three pure tones, one for each of the three rosharan shards. Each one is produced by a shard and is picked up by that shard's investature(although the transmuting medium is unclear). Each of the three tones has an anti tone. An anti tone combined with a tone will produce total destruction. This allows a fused or spren to be killed permanently for the first time in rosharan history. Mixing tones allows you to combine investiture. Towerlight is produced by the combination of Honor and Cultivation's tone. Warlight is made through a combination of Honor and Odium's. Another light I will call Wildlight could be made with Cultivation and Odium's and a final one I call Rosharlight could theoretically be made with all three. There are many many more tones which could correspond to different types of spren. One of these is used for Rlain's enhanced growth with stormlight trick. Fabrails and Urithiru Fabrails are a fairly new field and the amount of secrecy practiced by different groups of people who study them make me suspect a lot of what is known about them. A study of Urithiru was started still more recently so it too is poorly understood. Surge Fabrails Although WoBs confirm that every surge can be made into a fabrail only three have been seen on screen. The soulcasters or Transformation fabrails are easily the most common with modern Vorins even using them at funerals. In the cognitive realm they look like sleeping radiant spren. The Progression fabrails have only ever been seen in Dalinar's visions where they were used by radiants to provide regrowth. The final fabrail was an Adhesion fabrail used by Nale to revive Szeth. Apparently these Fabrails are created by trapping a sapiant spren in the real world. For example manifesting an inkspren will create a soulcaster. Regular Fabrails Most fabrails are made by trapping a spren in a gemstone and then touching that gem to metal. Although most sharders agree that any of the allomantic metals would work and Brandon has confirmed that godmetals would as well not all of the metals and their effects are known. Trapping a spren is generally the most difficult part of the process. Although the gemstone type is important you also need to have something the spren is attracted to. For example making a fire to trap a flamespren. The gemstone is then placed near the bait. Experiments indicate 70% infusion is ideal. To finish trapping the spren you have to rapidly drain the gemstone. Apparently different methods of doing this are the most closely guarded secrets of each guild. Larkin are the easiest and probably original method but they are nearly extinct. The Arnist Method in which even larger dun gemstones are placed nearby and exert a force(like vacuum) which pulls the stormlight out of the gemstone trapping the spren inside. Another method involves using tones to push stormlight from one gemstone into another. Once you have trapped a spren you can use it. The primary method is to attach it to a metal cage. The type of metal determines what effect the fabrail will have. Zinc and Brass control "expression strength" with zinc increasing and brass decreasing this. Bronze is used for warning fabrails, Pewter for augmenters, Tin for diminishers, and Iron for attractors. Steel and Iron also "change polarity" although we do not yet know what this means. Warning fabrails alert one to objects or entities nearby. For example Rysn was able to detect approaching Shin with one. Augmenters increase some attribute while diminishers decrease it. Navani's painrail is an example. Attractors pull some type of object to a source. For example the ghoostbloods have a fabrail that draws smoke from across the room. Conjoiners are created from dividing a trapped spren in two. Spanreeds are an example. Flamespran are traditionally used for this purpose as they divide easily. It is unknown how to make their inverse. Logicspren fabrails are interesting as they work not be having a spren express an attribute but by exploiting the fact that when draining logicspren gemstone at a controlled rate they pulse at regular intervals. This is used to make clocks. Other Fabrails Void Fabrails are not yet understood and we only know of two. The fused call the first a suppressor and it prevents radiants from surgbinding or summoning blades. How it works is unknown although it seems to be based on a similar fabrail in Urithiru that prevents voidbinding. It is theorized that a powerful enough radiant can break through this field. The second is the spears of the Shanay-im which drain stormlight from a radiant once they wound them. These are not effectively fabrails at all as no spren is involved. These spears are made from two metals. One that blocks investiture and another that conducts it. The blocking metal is aluminum and the conducting metal is Raysium. Navani theorizes that the fused can pull investiture from a radiant by the same vacuum mechanic used in water pumps. Urithiru Still working on this one help appreciated Urithiru is located in a basically impassible group of mountains and is only truly accessible via tunnel or oathgate. It is a highly defensible location both due to its location and its architecture. The tower city had never fallen to invasion in its several thousand years. Notable features of this tower include the oathgates(which offer travel to the 10 capitals of the silver kingdoms as well as the cognitive realm), specialized fabrails to aid in living(such as heating, pressurization and water pumps), and most notably a suppression fabrail that prevents the fused from surgebinding. It has become clear recently that the tower can regular its temperature and pressure as well as detect oncoming storms. The Tower has many doors designed to only be accessible to radiants that function by infusing spesific gemstones inside the walls. The sibling can see and hear through veins of strata that line the walls.

  34. I just woke up with a random idea this morning and I figured I'd see if anyone else was thinking along the same lines. The sleepless want to make sure that Rysn doesn't bond a spren, in theory because Investiure could allow her to use her the dawnshard's power, which potentially could be world breaking. What would happen if Zahel or Hoid (or anyone else) gave her breaths? As we have previously seen with Vasher's dueling, this can be done against someone's will and quite easily. It seems to me like Rysn just became a world shattering weapon that could be unlocked by someone with easily transferable Investiture and a bit of knowledge. Hoid terrifies me now, as a person who states he'd burn the world to get what he wanted, and has previous knowledge of the power involved and a potential way to trigger it.

  36. Actually there are 17 16. 15 of them write the books and the 16th lives his life. The splinters of brandon take turns writing the different scense in his books. I have them numbered based on what I think that they write. He is Brandon's passion. He writes all the love scenes He is Brandon's inner gardener. He writes all scenes of character growth He is Brandon's sense of right and wrong. Passion thought he was annoying and killed him. He is Brandon's inner drive. He keeps all the other aspects of Brandon motivated. He is Brandon's inner arson. He writes all the world destroying and dustbringer scenes. He feels like he did not get a lot to write so he joined with the next brandon splinter He is Brandon's protector. He tries to make sure all the characters don't die. He merged with the above Brandon splinter. He is Brandon's giver. He writes the scenes where character's receive their powers. He is Brandon's overlord. He writes the scenes with the corrupt rulers. He is Brandon's inner manager. He makes sure all the books stay separate. He is Brandon's feelings of affection for others and writes the scenes with family and close friends. This last splinter does not write but runs Brandon's personal life and insults everyone around him. Yes, I know I don't know what all of the Brandon splinters are, but this is what I know for certain. Here are now the speculations: There might be one that rights all the scenes with Kelsier There might be one that makes sure all the other splinter's aren't idiots and keeps the books in context. There might be one that comes up with all the magic systems. There might be one that makes sure that all the other splinters are careful and don't get themselves killed. There might be another splinter that Brandon's passion has killed There also might be a splinter that writes all the scenes with the world hoppers. These are my personal speculations of Brandon's splinters. Tell me what you think. Edit: Storming Ninja's trying to Ruin Perserve Harmonize my great meme

  39. I am an absolute idiot. I spent an hour editing a pdf for a class and when I closed it I pushed "revert changes" instead of "save changes"

  41. I must make sure all paperwork is filled even for those who have no regard for proper procedure! Working in HSEQ I do start to see where my own Oaths would go, and I do get behind Sigzil completely on this..!

  42. My guess: One Dawnshard is contained inside a certain "robot spren" that likes to destroy evil and the other three are not.

  43. This is a fun idea. I have trouble removing things from context because I like to lay setup for a while before delivering a punchline, but here are some (I think) funny moments that work pretty well without setup. If you like my jokes I will go digging for more, and potentially find motivation to write some new ones.

  44. Q10fanatic So, the third ideal of the Windrunners. Is it about protecting those you hate or is it more broadly about going against your instincts/wants in order to protect others better? Brandon Sanderson For most people, it's going to go along the hatred lines--but it extends all the way to what you're implying. Mostly, I think of it as, "I'll get rid of my caveats about those I'll protect." You're likely to see the more extreme examples as I write out the oaths for others, particularly in-scene, as I don't want it to feel too repetitive. But you can assume that for most of the original members of Bridge Four (who are slowly hitting this ideal) that it had to do with agreeing to protect a group that they in some way dislike. (So long as it's right to do so, as defined by themselves and their spren, of course.) Dawnshard Annotations Reddit Q&A (Nov. 6, 2020)

  45. I replied on this on my review, because some were asking about this being very inconsistent with Daniel Greene. I... definitely think there is a Sanderlanche. I respect Daniel a bunch, but I don't quite understand how he can say that there isn't one. That's all I'll say right now

  46. Ok so people are getting the book weeks before the release I'm now considering the possibility of becoming an Youtuber dedicated to books. I will work hard for the next 3 years to become sufessful and get many subscribers. After that I will finally get a copy of SA5 for myself 20 days before anyone else and shut down my channel right after that
