Hello, another one of Bip's new players here! You can call me Quill. I'll be playing as Conepine, a brown cat with very fluffy ears, tail, and chest, that may or may not resemble pinecones, as well as bright orange eyes. He's... just a pinecone cat. He decided he would have some fun and explore this stone Twolegplace, but it turns out that it is very much not abandoned, so now he's just trying to lowkey lurk through the hallways. At least he found this shiny stink stick. He doesn't like it very much, but he figured he would take it with him on the off chance it ends up being useful. The shiny stink stick may or may not just be a gun. Conepine is having a very, very strange birthday.

Kas you're not getting out of this that easily. :P

If someone else does sign up (which I think is likely, I think there was one more person from LU who was interested in playing), then we'll just figure out what role to add. :P

Also, sorry not sorry for the double post, but we realized the Postman rules said they get a PM each cycle, when it should be each turn. This error has been fixed in the rules doc and will be fixed in the main post with the rules as well.

Sign ups are now closed!! We'll get PMs sent out as soon as possible and the first day will go up soon (hopefully...)

Mipha crept through the castle halls. At each corner, she peeked around, searching for hidden assassins. Never before had she felt so unsafe in the formidable fortress of Hyrule Castle, but after the events of the evening, she could not shake the feeling of unease.

She had been ordered by King Rhoam to return to her guest chambers at once and disguise herself. She wasn’t sure how she would accomplish such a task--being a Zora, she stuck out like a sore fin--but she would do her best. She owed it to her own kingdom to keep herself safe in this trying time.

How well could a trained Yiga impersonate one of her fellow champions? Or herself, for that matter? She feared being captured, locked in a dark cupboard and an evil stranger taking her likeness to trick her friends. The thought was horrific.

Could they impersonate her so well that Ruta, her Divine Beast, would recognize the imposter as Mipha herself? What a horrible thought, the idea of the Yiga taking control of the Divine Beasts. She would be sure to write letters to the other champions warning them of this possibility. Though unlikely, they could take no chances. The Yiga were cunning, and dangerous, and the threat of the doom of Hyrule hung all too near.

Mipha turned another corner, momentarily forgetting to check for Yiga assassins. She paused for a moment. Something felt off, something smelled wrong.

Blood.

Mipha dashed forward, following the scent of the blood as it wafted into the grand hallway. She could feel the sickly stench around her, coppery, thick, overwhelming her senses. This was Hylian blood, permeating the walls of the castle, tainting them. Poisoning them. There was so much of the stench, how had she not noticed it before? Someone had been slain.

Mipha rounded a corner to see a body, limbs spread in awkward, broken angles. She could hardly make out features through the mess of blood and bruises, but they looked like a young woman. Her throat had been slashed, her hair cut in jagged ways, as if she’d tried desperately to free herself from someone who had hold of her. Her eyes stared up at the ceiling, unseeingly, and she had fallen in such a way that it seemed she had reached up to the sky, pleading.

Mipha looked up.

Decorating the ceiling was the cold stare of the Goddess Hylia, watching as the blood pooled from the young woman’s neck, staining the carpet even redder.

Mipha sounded the alarm.

Goddesses help them all.

LG78: The Legend of Zelda: The False Heroes has begun! GM PMs should all be sent out, so let us know if anything went wrong. If any Postman PMs are opened, make sure to include myself, @Biplet, and @Elandera, our amazing IM.

There will be a removal during this Day turn. There is no vote minimum (though no one is removed if no one votes), and tied votes result in a random tied player getting removed.

In addition, Beedle's Shop is now open for all players! Each player can submit one item request this turn, and this does not take up their one action per turn. Item requests will be approved or denied in the next Night turn.

Player List:

Spoiler
  1. @Matrim's Dice - Jaralph, needing to brush up on his Hyrule Historia
  2. @Kasimir - Kazs, no relation to the Rito minstrel, beleaguered bard who probably is in the wrong line of work, and connoisseur of bad rhymes. The absolute worst.
  3. @The Unknown Order - Gavrill, seriously bewildered because he is having a firemoss hallucination.
  4. @Ashbringer - Faleast and AraRaash, who will certainly find a way to keep each other busy while stuck in a strange dimension.
  5. @Azmine_king
  6. @Archer - Linkov, an elf with a sword who shouts "I'M LINKOV"
  7. @Dannex - DaaNex, a kandra

Excited for this game! I wrote the following like a week ago and then revised some things yesterday so this should be up to date in some way :P

  • Zelda/Link, DON'T CLAIM. Link especially, ever. Zelda... there's a whole lot of ways you could think about this. I'm just going to give the simple advice of really, really think about if you want to claim, the only reason you ever should is if you scan an elim, but think- if there is a reasonable chance that elim could get exed in the future, imo it's not worth a claim but that's for you to judge and I don't want to suggest not claiming if you scan an elim because that doesn't make much sense :P. Just... think about it real hard if you want to. But Link never should, ever.
  • Kohga's kill will probably be saved for if Zelda/Link do claim. I doubt they'll use it beforehand.
  • All the name specific roles very likely only have one person with them, for obvious reasons. Postman/Sheikah/Knight could all have multiple people and probably do. There's nothing in the rules that say it's role madness so I'm assuming there's a few vanillas as well.
  • It's dangerous to try to guess which roles the elims have, but I'm going to anyway :P I think Beedle is definitely village. Mipha, Daruk, and Revali also are likely village (Daruk most likely of the three, Revali least likely of the three). Rhoam and Urbosa are the two unique roles I think are most likely to be Yiga, though with Kohga's Kill as a mechanic Urbosa could be village just because of that. Really what I've discovered as I'm writing this is that there's no clear evil one of these which I guess is the point :P And really GMing trolling is a thing that very much exists so I guess this whole paragraph is irrelevant, but hey :P.
  • It makes a lot of sense for the Yiga to have a Knight imo. I'd also not be entirely shocked if they have a Postman. They likely have 5 people, so maybe Kohga/Knight/Postman/Rhoam/vanilla? Switching out one of those roles for a vanilla maybe? Idk. Another irrelevant paragraph tbh. I don't think they have a Sheikah though cause scanning Zelda/Link is really OP.
  • Link, I wouldn't be too kill happy? Though with your ban if you hit a villager it actually could be better than a normal CS idk. Do whatever you want, I just don't want you to hit Zelda :P.
  • Not much I have to say about Beedle's shop tbh. It's items, yay :P Any more suggestions and things just turns into a huge IKYK for Beedle and I don't want to do that to them.

Hyped to play! So many new players, that's cool, excited to play with Steel as well. And I'm glad I'm village this game, rolling elim that many times in a row was exhausting :P.

Also, none of my RPs ever will have claims, soft or otherwise. It's all for flavor, always.

YeetAroundABush

Jaralph never thought he'd put aside the chair for another project before it was completed. It wasn't his style. When he put his mind to something, he was famously stubborn, and in his eye the chair was one of the most important things he could craft.

But the Yiga, as usual, changed everything.

Jaralph was firstly a carpenter- that would always be his one true love- but he dabbled in the occasional metalwork when he had the time. Or when in dire circumstances. He deemed the moment worth of a diversion from delicately carving the beautiful piece of furniture, and that alone should have told anyone paying attention how much the castle had been shook. Jaralph didn't simply stray from his chosen project for anything short of a life-threatening situation, which this definitely was.

Twenty-six people in the castle. How many were traitors? How many would survive?

Would the former of the two be larger than the latter?

Bang. Jaralph hammered at the blade he was shaping, pounding his frustration into the white-hot metal. He curved it carefully, then dunked it in a bucket of water to allow it to blow off its steam. Jaralph blew off his steam as well.

He stared at the blade still softly glowing in the water. In all his years serving at Hyrule Castle, he never before had cause to hold a weapon. But now with nowhere to run, he had no choice.

Backstory RP:

“Oh kindly sword elf,” the people of Hyrule implored, “please help us. We have many lengths of chain that are impractically short.”

“I AM LINKOV!” he replied.

“You’re right, we can link the chains together to make them longer! Thanks, Russian Robin Hood!”

And so, a hero’s journey began.

***

During the week, I tried to think like the GMs and attempted some distribution role analysis. Then four people signed up yesterday and threw both myself and I suspect the GMs off a little. (Hiiiii, new people!) Most of this will still hold true, but I’m still trying to decide how many vanillas we can reasonably have. I initially assumed  that there is one of every name role and multiple of the generic ones, as well as vanillas, who are empowered by items.

Beedle

Biplet, are items distributed after Beedle dies? Does Beedle have neutral alignment?

Barring that, the role is certainly village, as an e!Beedle would funnel items solely to their teammates and create a serious power imbalance. V!Beedle should mostly give items to villagers, using reads to better manage the distribution as the game progresses. The elims get items from those they kill, but will be disadvantaged by an insightful Beedle, so I expect they have a strong team to compensate. The elims should kill a Beedle that isn’t granting their item requests, so claiming should be a last resort.

Zelda and Link

They should both request a Tireless Frog today so Beedle knows who they are. If three people request one, the third is an elim poser. To protect their identities, none of us should roleclaim. I expect any elim in danger of being exed will claim to be a confirmed good role, either to survive or help their team discover valuable information in the event of a counter-claim. We therefore cannot rely on mechanical analysis alone; everyone please do your part to be village read so we can gauge the likelihood of an eleventh hour claim being true without relying on counter-claims.

Master Kohga, Mipha, Urbosa, Daruk

Kohga’s superkiller role seems designed to prevent a confirmed good role claiming and being protected throughout the entire game. The wincon of only needing to kill one confirmed good (plus parity) also seems designed to circumnavigate the Mipha bodyguard finding a confirmed good and Kohga having already used his kill/being killed potentially making an unwinnable situation for the elims. To balance a v!Mipha, I’d guess the elims either have Daruk (Thug) and/or Urbosa (roleblocker). Daruk would be of more use.

Sheikah

And of course, being able to see roles would help too. Given we have scanner Zelda already, there’s a good chance they GMs sought balance by giving the evil team Sheikah. Village scanner Zelda and Revali vs evil Sheikah seems balanced.

Revali and King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule

Being able to see who people target seems fairly weak for either team, so my gut says it’s village. The King’s role is also weak, but it replicates the Mighty Bananas, which v!Beedle hands out, so I’m guessing it’s evil.

Knights and Postmen

As previously stated, there’s probably multiples of these. The Knights can redirect kills, or scans from Zelda, so they’re a good elim asset. The Postmen can either catch unwary villagers off guard or be a great counter to the elim doc. Their goal should be to get a confirmed good into a PM so they buddy can counter-claim in thread instead of them if it comes to it.

So in a twenty-six-person game, we could be looking at: V!Zelda, Link, Beedle, Mipha, Urbosa, Revali, Postman, Postman, Knight, +11 vs E!Kohga, Sheikah, King, Daruk, Knight, +1. With a village alignment scanner, who can create a towncore between their scans and the confirmed good roles late in the game, this seems pretty balanced. Still not sure about the amount of vanilla though. Maybe there's some more postmen/knights thrown in there?

Those who have played the video game may have some additional insight into the alignment of roles based on the alignments and personalities of the roles’ namesakes. If there’s someone infamous for being traitorous, that might be a clue. But it’s impersonation flavour, so that might be a dead end.

No, if Beedle dies, the shop closes.

There are no neutral alignments.

It's dangerous to try to guess which roles the elims have, but I'm going to anyway

Zelda's worth more than an elim since she's one of two people who the elims need to kill compared to the 5-6 people the village needs to kill. Claiming is for if they're guaranteed to be exed otherwise in the hopes of at least using up Kohga's kill. The Knight redirect would not save them from that, and presumably the hearty durian doesn't either. One thing that could happen is a village postman opening a PM with Zelda, which would permit her to scan them and then have the opportunity to get PMs opened between Zelda and anyone else scanned as village. That should be helpful even though the likelihood of an elim postman means that a PM with someone claiming to be Zelda can't be automatically trusted.

There's no real reason most of those named roles couldn't be elims. Beedle probably is village since it would take a while for him to be caught even if no villagers ever got any items. Rhoam and Revali are more likely on five person elim teams, the others are plausible with 5 or 6.

36 minutes ago, Archer said:

That would make the game over really quickly if Beedle's an elim, maybe even restart the game quickly, although chances are he's village. Link and Zelda being guaranteed to get any items they request would be helpful, especially if Tireless Frogs let them alignment scan/kill twice in a single night, which I wouldn't think they would but I forgot to  ask about.

The Yiga being here presented a problem. Or perhaps an opportunity. The Hylians would be more likely to accept her despite an admittedly suspicious lack of background information if they successfully stopped a contingent of Yiga assassins from killing the Princess. Until that happened, those same lack of personal details were making the Hylians distrustful, enough that a Sheikeh had come to interview her personally in what appeared to be a training room. Impa was now number two on their ‘do not cross’ list, rating below Link only because she seemed inclined to give her a chance.

After quickly realising that obfuscating would not be helpful, Kele found that they didn’t know plausible answers to simple questions like ‘where are you from’ and ‘what have you been doing all your life’? Her reply that they were an orphan raised by non-Sheikah parents in a small northern town seemed to amuse her interviewer. Lips curled up, Impa asked for a demonstration of her archery abilities. Kele drew an arrow and briefly contemplated turning the bow on Impa, but asides from the fact that this would ensure their death at the hands of the castle guards, Impa’s continued smirk convinced her that she would be the one to kill them if she pursued that course of action.

Hands still shaking a little at the prospect of having to fight her, their first shot barely hit the target at a range of less than 25 meters. Embarrassed, she correctly her aim and hit the outside of the bullseye on the second shot. Encouraged by a slight nod, Kele drew back their bow for a third shot too sharply and the string snapped. She winced, less in pain than in the anticipation of what was about to happen to them. To her surprise, Impa merely laughed and pulled a dark metallic bow off the wall and handed it to her. Their eyes widened as they experimentally pulled back on an arrow and found that this new weapon had a much higher draw weight than even her old duplex bow, even if it was only designed to fire one arrow at a time. On a hunch, they aimed at a target 40 meters away, uncomfortably far for the precision assassination work she’d engaged in while wielding a duplex bow. The arrow slammed into the inner ring without significantly slowing. Excitedly, they pulled another arrow and sent it into the exact center of the bullseye. The duplex bow never could have made such a shot, or at least it would have taken hundreds of tries. Grinning openly now, an unfamiliar expression on week old features she was starting to think of as hers, Kele put a third arrow into the boundary between the bullseye and the inner circle. They turned to see Impa nodding in approval. Then she pulled out her own bow and put three arrows into the bullseye within the span of a few seconds, forming a tight triangle around Kele’s perfect shot. They almost dropped her bow in shock, staring at the target and then at Impa, who made another amused smile before saying “If the Princess approves of you, we can see about getting you some extra practice with that bow, little ‘Sheikeh’. My lady could use all the trained archers she can find these days.” Kele followed her out the door still clutching their precious new bow to her chest, too wrapped up in fantasies of shooting people more accurately from further away to pay full attention to the warning note in Impa’s voice.

Nott was annoyed. Nott was angry. Nott was scared. Nott was alot of things, but a man with a death wish wasn't one of them. He wrung his hands together, glancing around with narrowed eyes. He would have to tread carefully from now on. Nowhere was safe, and nobody was trustworthy.

There are a thousand ways this could go, He thought. But so help me none will end in my demise.

After all, he was a Yigah. And Yigahs never went down without a fight.

Kazs strummed his ukulele and wondered why everyone was so verbose. Far too many letters for his taste, thank you very much, and all this whispering and hiding beneath mysterious hoods and sticking heads around corners wasn't much better. He was surprised the champions had hidden themselves so well, but especially the princess and the champion that guarded her—then again, Kazs had no desire to see either of them bleeding out on the end of a Yiga knife. If you couldn't even trust the princess or the champion who wielded the Master Sword, who else could you trust, in this bloody palace?

Enough people were throwing out theories about who could be Yiga. Kazs wasn't about to throw his hat into the ring, though he wondered at the insistence that Beedle was on their side. The Princess was, that was for certain. As was her champion, the one they named Link. But Beedle? Revali? The other champions? Kazs did not know. He thought to himself that the issue was almost usually that you could never tell prima facie who the Yiga had replaced; in truth, the real question was how the scales would be balanced to accommodate such a shift.

Zelda seeing
Link the swordsman
Kohga hidden

The perilous threat

Grace, by Mipha
Calling new dawn
Daruk the rock
And Hylia I'm stuck

This was more attention and energy that Kazs wanted to give his little bit of doggerel, when Yiga assassins were out to kill them. As far as Kazs was concerned, initial guesses were decent enough but what they really needed was to be able to gather more data to make sense of what the forces arrayed against them were.

Just for old times' sake, Kazs thought to himself. If Zoel [= @DrakeMarshall] wasn't Ezlo in disguise, Kazs would eat that hat and sing for his supper.

Linebeck strolled dramatically into town. He might not have his boat now, but that wouldn't stop him from being the hero yet again!
I'll just say this at the start so I don't have to mention it later. Starting sunday, I'll be in Hawaii so, uh, I have no clue how much time I'll have. But until then I should be very active.
Thanks for the role analysis and advice. I still haven't bothered giving the rules a proper read through, so that helps me use less brain cells.
Man this is gonna be fun. I've missed playing. I have no idea what the meta regarding first day votes is nowadays, but I'll vote on Stick. Share a thought or something, I don't know, and I'll take off my vote.

“Hey! Listen! I saw Faleast change shape! Maybe he’s a Yiga.”

I agree that Beedle is probably village, but I think you could also build an elim team specifically around him being evil as well. Striker doesn’t have a huge reputation for being a troll GM (yet), but I guess my stance would be more on the side of role safety than not. I’d rather not lose the game before it has really started.

I see no new posts in the thread tonight
Not a new vote to be seen
A whole realm of isolation
And it looks like I'm the bard

The few longposts I scan then give up, try to hide
Couldn't read the rules, Hylia knows I've tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the anchor you've always had to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can't read the rules anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and close that tab
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the votes rage on
The rules never bothered me anyway :P

Huh. I was sure the balance was that they were neutral. I guess them being NKable is enough to deter a claim

Updated plan: we hedge out bets. Only Zelda requests a Frog, while Link avoids signalling their identity. Either we get double scans throughout the game, or we lose a key player but at least the game isn't over. I'd rather tackle this head on than waffle and eventually decide to trust them anyway. Either it'll be a bad idea now and we'll know sooner rather than later that the item pipeline will be dry, or it'll be a bad idea later when Beedle claims and we all go yeah, they're probably fine. Probably. I suspect we'll all trust them at exlo if it comes to it and we have to play balance of probability, so why not trust them now and make the most of it?

Also, Mat mentioned Sheikah isn't actually a name but a generic role, so there's probably multiples of them. Good catch
