  1. Night Two: Striking Sparks The Frebarind Finisher was, evidently, not yet finished. “Lamentations!” Faleast cried out, in the streets. “Dreadful lamentations! Two bodies discovered—” “—Praise the Ja!” Eiwlil interjected, punctuating each syllable with a vigorous shake of her head. “—likely victims of the Frebarind Finisher!” “Praise the Ja!” “Death stalks the streets of Frebarind!” “Praise the Ja!” “A hundred boxings to the one who can put an end to the scourge of the Frebarind Finisher!” “Praise the Ja!” “Dreadful, woeful, tragic lamentations!” “Praise the Ja!” Except, Landis thought, the outlook was at once both more dire and hopeful than expected. One of their own, though thankfully not a member of the Synod, had proven to be Spiked. He remembered Stick: peculiarly, both the President and the Treasurer of the Tathingdwen Tautological Society of Tautology were named Stick. No doubt President Stick would be grieved to hear of Treasurer Stick’s passing. Even worse to know that Treasurer Stick had become an informant for the Steel Inquisition, spying on the other Feruchemists. They have so many eyes among us, he thought to himself, dismayed. Worms in the rotten core of an apple. Last night, when the death was reported. He’d willed the other members of the Synod to listen. To understand what this meant. To act. If the Steel Inquisition had suborned a full Feruchemist, they could suborn anyone at all. No one was beyond suspicion. “It doesn’t matter,” another in the Synod had said. Landis knew who the man was, although he wore a mask. Most of the Synod did, these days. They believed the enemy could not see them, could not work out their identities at the meetings. As though they did not all know who their fellow Synod members were, even. “Can we even be truly sure that Stick was working for the Steel Inquisition?” “Those puncture wounds didn’t kill,” said another, who had elected to wear a headband instead of a mask. Landis wasn’t sure why. “They were inflicted before death, and there was very little bleeding around them. She was an agent of the Inquisition.” “But then where are the spikes?” asked a third, apparently confident enough in the anonymity provided by a domino mask. “Spikes do not disappear on their own.” “The answer,” said Landis, having had enough, “Is fairly obvious, isn’t it?” He looked at them, at the men and women of the Synod, hidden beneath their masks and that lone headband, and the others who stood among them, playing their games, burying their heads in the sand, and felt tired and frustrated and irritated. Hadn’t they lost enough? Hadn’t they all lost enough of their number? Ias and Hazen and Pashan and Radur, and the person they’d sent to check up on him had reported that Vardenwith had been killed. Did they know? Landis wondered. It wasn’t the first time he’d considered the Synod had to be compromised, and no doubt Vardenwith was killed for the seat he was filling in. Radur’s seat. “An accomplice,” said Raven. She nodded to him, as she strode into the meeting-place. “Inadeus was killed by a swift toxin of unknown provenance.” “What does that mean?” demanded one of the masked Synod members present. “It means an assassin,” snapped Landis. “It means the Steel Ministry,” Raven said. Calmly. Evenly. “It means that whoever killed Inadeus, that assassin procured a poison that is rare and proscribed enough that I can’t recognise it, which means that person has access and connections.” The room erupted. “But does that mean Steel Inquisition?” one of the Synod asked, who wore no mask. Confident, no doubt, in all gathered there. “How much of poisons do you know, Raven?” “Enough,” Raven replied. “Enough,” Landis said, in the same heartbeat, an echo of hers. “Which of us has an enemy—any enemy—that would pay for our deaths with an assassin, and one who knows and has access to rare poisons?” Silence. “The Steel Inquisition,” said the one wearing the domino mask. “The Steel Inquisition,” Landis agreed, grimly. “Stick was suborned. Stick was working for the Steel Inquisition. But there is another.” “You seem to know much of what transpired with the Frebarind Synod,” Olaf said. “And with Landis.” Kais shrugged. “One does not journey at the speed of thought. It took me time to travel down to Frebarind, time from when the letters were dispatched, and news of Hazen’s death. And then I had to investigate intensively, to assess the situation on the ground, and to understand what had happened in the days following Hazen’s death, and Landis’s leadership of the Synod. I did not arrive in Frebarind until several days after Inadeus’s death.” “A full Feruchemist suborned…” Olaf said, letting his voice trail off. The thought was horrendous, but Olaf knew as well as any House Lord that loyalty could be bought. Any man could be bought, in the end. The real question was one of price. Kais’s mention of the Synod and their interest in rare metals had brought him here. The Jerzy wine deal was interesting—an opportunity to diversify House Ffnord’s portfolio—but it was the suggestion of the Synod and the hint of knowledge, that the Feruchemists knew more about metals than even Allomancers, that had lured him all the way out to the Terris Dominance, and the Sign of Fire. Every man had his price. This was Olaf’s. “I suspect the spikes are capable of subverting a person’s will,” Kais said. “But I don’t think we can really know for sure. In any case, it seemed the Steel Inquisition was offering Stick a bounty on Feruchemical spikes brought back to their agents. And the Tathingdwen Tautological Society of Tautology had been in the red for some time…” “Ah. That explains it. You followed the boxings.” “As one does.” Olaf wondered, idly, if the bounty on Feruchemical spikes was still active. But he abandoned the thought; the prospect of metallurgical knowledge for the moment was sufficient draw, and while everyone knew the standard proportions for Allomantic metals, still, metallurgists always hoarded their secrets, seeking alloys of interest. And if the Synod had access to metals or alloys he hadn’t yet heard of… No, Olaf thought, the bounty wasn’t particularly enticing. He smiled toothily. “Well, what happened to the spikes?” The noblewoman at the next table over was nursing her drink. She’d been there the whole time since they’d come in, and something about her stuck out to Olaf. Probably nothing. And yet… “The Synod wasn’t able to establish this,” Kais answered. “But it takes a certain sort of person to recognise the spikes for what they are—to infiltrate Frebarind, the Steel Inquisition, we’d later discover, utilised spikes that were less conventional and therefore less recognisable than those employed by the Inquisitors. And of course, this meant they were easier to conceal. And it takes a certain sort of person to recognise the spikes and harvest them, all the same…” Frebarind didn’t know. That fact leaped out at Landis as he watched the crowd gather in the marketplace, Eiwlil shaking her head vigorously as she exhorted the masses to praise the Ja, and as Faleast did his own preaching, crying lamentations and the news of the day. As far as Frebarind knew, the Frebarind Finisher was just a single killer. And last night, the Finisher had struck again, claiming the lives of both Stick and Vardenwith. Unless someone corrected them. Unless someone told them the truth. He was under no illusions as to how they would react. They would be afraid. The Frebarind Finisher had showed that no one was safe; not full Feruchemists. Not the head of the Synod-in-Frebarind himself. No one at all was safe. But that was the point, Landis thought. Sometimes, you had to be cruel to be kind. “A moment,” he said, laying a hand on Faleast’s shoulder. The town crier glanced at him with a sly smile. Many members of the Synod had privately commented they’d found Faleast…unsettling. Not for the first time, Landis could see why. There was something about Faleast’s eyes, something that wasn’t quite right. “Lamentations,” Faleast said, as if it was a greeting, as though he took some secretive joy in the word. “What is it that you need, Landis?” “The Frebarind Finisher is dead,” Landis stated. “And how do you know this?” “Puncture wounds,” Landis said. “But she didn’t die from them.” Faleast’s mind worked quickly, Landis would give him that. “Spikes? Torture?” “Spikes.” “Lamentation,” said Faleast. Landis had the impression the man said the word the way a skaa would have sworn by the Lord Ruler’s name. “And you want them to know this.” “I want them to know they are not safe.” “Lamentations! Dreadful lamentations!” Faleast was shouting the news in the marketplace, punctuated by Eiwlil’s preaching. “Stick was the Frebarind Finisher!” “I knew that,” Izzy Dedyet declared, proudly, as a crowd stopped and milled about, listening to Faleast. “I put out the kill contract myself.” “I…” Jeral said. Izzy’s smile was just a little too bright, reminding him of a sword. His knuckles tightened about the hilt of his cane-sword. It wasn’t the golden-hilted cane-sword though. It was just a regular cane-sword, a gentleman’s fashionable gentlething, that Jeral had taken to carrying through the streets to feel a little safer. Safety, security, and peace. Frebarind had none of that right now. “...I can actually believe that.” “Praise the Ja!” Eiwlil intoned, shaking her head warningly. “The Ja has struck down the Frebarind Finisher! Praise the Ja! If Izzy lies, the Ja will strike her down too! Praise the Ja! Or whoever did the actual deed will silence her for good. Praise the Ja!” “Izzy says she’s reformed,” Steel muttered, after a long, mostly-mumbled diatribe on stab-happy Izzy Dedyet, with the air of a man reliving long-buried trauma. “I’d sooner believe that the Lord Ruler himself has turned Jaist.” “Well,” Izzy said, advancing on Faleast. “Where’s my hundred boxings?” “Claim it from the watch,” Faleast informed her. “I plan to.” “Right,” said Jeral, after a pause. “So I guess we know that Izzy isn’t the Frebarind Finisher. That’s great.” “The Frebarind Finisher ist dead, then!” X exclaimed, nodding approvingly. Her dogs milled about on their leashes. “This ist very good. Ve need to kill even more people!” “What,” said Steel, flatly. “Actually, about that…” Faleast coughed. “Lamentations! Joyful lamentations!” he raised his volume back to an all-out shout, meant to carry across the market square. “Frebarind Finisher had accomplice! No one in Frebarind is safe until this phantom menace is stopped!” “I say we go to Artwyn’s store and ransack it,” Stann said, loudly. “Artwyn dropped by my place for a chat last night, and he said he’d made it to someone else’s home too.” Stann was paging idly through an immaculately-maintained flipbook, as though in boredom. “Old man like him, where’s he get the energy to run about so quickly? I bet you anything he’s lying.” “Lying doesn’t make someone the accomplice of the Frebarind Finisher,” Jeral said, sensibly. Though he certainly thought there was a decently-sized chance that the accomplice of the Frebarind Finisher would lie. “Well, yes,” Stann admitted. “But it’s bloody unnatural.” Artwyn scowled at the clerk. “I exercise,” he snapped. “I use a personal planner to schedule my day, and I hydrate.” “Unnatural isn’t the problem,” Steel interjected. “Evil is. Izzy’s unnatural but that doesn’t mean Izzy works with the Frebarind Finisher. If anything, I’m pretty sure we all agree that getting someone to stab Stick means that Izzy’s got her heart in the right place. …If she has one.” That last bit was said very, very quietly. “Look,” Stann said. “I don’t have much time today to stand around the marketplace and start yelling to and fro until we decide to take matters in our own hands, save ourselves, and go find the Frebarind Finisher—well, the Frebarind Finisher’s accomplice. What about we skip the argument and get to the bit where we show up to ransack Artwyn’s shop with torches and pitchforks?” Sparky was awake and peering out the window when the crowd arrived, though without torches, and in one case, armed with a plain-hilted cane-sword. “I still think this is a mistake,” Jeral grumbled. “We should be looking at someone more suspicious, like Eran. Giving out cookies like that is suspicious.” “Mmmfffm,” said Steel, brushing crumbs off his fingers. “I think,” said Stann, “We should be applying pressure to Artwyn. What are we even doing here?” Eran smiled beatifically, a basket of freshly-baked cookies tucked under an arm. “You don’t think Stick was too quick to distance herself from Sparky?” “Lord Ruler,” Sparky muttered, unable to look away. They felt their knees go weak. It wasn’t torches and pitchforks but having a mob at their door made their heart sink to the pit of their stomach. Stick hadn’t even stood a chance. If they tried, they could make a break for it. They had a back door. “This is the end, isn’t it?” Sparky said aloud, scrubbing furiously at their eyes with the back of their hand. They thought about the others, left alone, left to fend for themselves in this cruel world. Run away, the spikes whispered. Save yourself. But Sparky was rooted to the spot with horror, with fear, with anxiety, and with regret for those they would be leaving behind. “So this is how it ends…” they whispered. “Sparky!” Artwyn called out. He thwacked the door briskly with his staff. “Sparky, we know you’re in there! Come on out now, make it easier on yourself.” Jeral gripped the hilt of his cane-sword, alert, ready for anything. He wondered if the agents of the Steel Inquisition were among them, laughing. “Praise the Ja!” Eiwlil was screaming, shaking her head aggressively at the door as Artwyn thwacked it. He resolved to keep a closer eye on her; Eiwlil was too bloodthirsty for Jeral’s tastes. There was no response. Artwyn, his patience evidently at an end, smashed the door in at the hinges. “He’s too strong for an old man!” Stann complained, as the mob entered Vedel manor. “Lord Ruler, Stann,” Steel said, exasperated. “We need to find Sparky immediately.” “They’re running, or maybe they’re hiding like a rat!” X shouted, and let her hounds loose. “Ve vill find them, won’t ve, my lovelies? Ve vill!” Eventually, they found the room overlooking the porch. “Don’t move,” Sparky said. They levelled the tip of their sword at Jeral, who was in the lead. The hounds were baying now, and the sword in Sparky’s hand trembled. “Come on,” Jeral said, and now he let go of his cane-sword. “Sparky, we can talk about this, I’m sure it’s all a misunderstanding—” “It isn’t a misunderstanding!” Sparky snapped. “You killed Stick and now you’re here to brutally murder me too just because I listened to a great story, a very good story from that Inquisitor and he told me I was doing the right thing and maybe it would matter, and I would matter, and I would make a difference, and I regret everything, not the killing, no, you all had to be stopped, but that you’ve found me and it’s going to end like this and I’m going to leave them all alone. I never really had a chance, did I? I wasn’t going to live!” Jeral blinked at the unexpected diatribe. “Er,” he said, intelligently. “I knew it! You’ve come for me, to hunt me down like an animal!” Sparky’s eyes were wild. “Well, I’m not going to go down without a fight, I’m not helpless, I’m going to make Stick proud!” Sparky lunged. Almost without thought, working on reflex, Jeral drew and turned. He felt the hot sting as Sparky’s sword slashed past him. He heard the hiss of the sword-stroke turn into the meatier sound of sword meeting flesh, watched as Sparky crumpled to the floor, a scarlet line opening from left ear to right collarbone. “It mattered…” Sparky wheezed, and then Sparky was dead. “Please tell me they were spiked,” Jeral said, aloud, as the other inhabitants of Frebarind gaped behind him. “Because if not, I’ve just killed a kid, and I think I’m about to be sick.” JNV / Sparky was struck down with a cane-sword! They were a Spiked Sentry! Vote Count: Night Two has begun! It will end in a little over 23 hours, on Sunday 5 June 2022 at 10:00 PM EDT (-4:00 UTC). Get those actions in! 4. When I stop and visualize @Returned's comment on Wax's sense of linear paths away from himself, this gets even more obvious IRL terms. Wax essentially has had a limited form of laser sights for himself, if not his gun, in an era that has analog sights. He can literally line up the metal of the bullet in his gun with a metal object and make adjustments from there. The Steelsight lines pointing to metal surrounding a target gives him angular data he can mentally divide and compare to the angle of the metal bullet in his gun when not using Aluminum rounds, or the barrel of his gun when not using an Aluminum gun. That means he will never be more inaccurate than the 2 or 3 pieces of metal closest to his target. If he misses, the bullet now near his target gives him even more targeting data, if close enough to sense. Of course guns don't follow straight line firing and he has to adjust for gravity and distance, but if he's using known objects such as an enemy's pistol to get a general sense of the amount of metal he is using to aim, the width of the Steel line may give him ranging data in addition to regular depth perception. What about how Steel lines point away from your center of gravity? Wax makes the third button down on his shirts out of steel (if I remember right), so presumably that's his center of gravity. For me, that's about in line with the middle of my shoulders, meaning that if I held my arm with a gun directly away from my body, it could be in line with my center of gravity with only minor adjustment. In fact at least the shots where Wax Pushes on the bullet as it leaves the gun, his aiming must mostly be in line with the Steel line from his center of gravity, so we know Wax does this. Of course, we never see Wax actually thinking about all this and it's only as good as your ability to accurately process and utilize the information when moving your gun arm, but that's the kind of targeting information a Coinshot gunman could have. I'm a terrible shot, but give me a month or two with Steelsight and I could get way better than most I think. Then you add in what Returned and Tremayne have said about manipulating the shot itself, bracing himself, and using Ranette firearms, then his accuracy gets more plausible to me. Maybe this post seems similar to my first, but I wasn't thinking about the environmental data Wax has or that all of his new info is in straight lines that he can literally use to line up his shots. If Ranette uses Ironsight to test the accuracy of her weapons, she also has an advantage most gunsmiths don't have. She may even be adapting the guns to someone that can see metal lines. One last new thought as an IRL comparison. To Wax, unless Aluminum is in use, everyone is effectively using tracer rounds that he can track with his eyes closed. In BoM he was instinctively tagging enemies firing Aluminum while fighting a small army. Wax's abilities specifically give him an advantage in gunfights, separate from standard target shooting.

  5. That is one of the most common ways to shorthand the fact that someone is willing to talk about their feelings, reguardless of the context. You could easily use it to describe Vin and Kelsier without it feeling out of place. You mean where he says that Moash has less respect for him than the others? How the rest of Brisge Four sees him as an immortal and to Moash he's just some dude? The only person who's opinion about the cosmere matters is Brandon.

  6. These sound fun! Here's a few cheap and simple ideas. Skybreaker challenge colored flour/chalk sack war. Pancake bar with 10 9 different kinds of pancakes or toppings if you (or whomever is cooking) want a simpler food Depending on who you're hosting for, temporary Bridge 4 tattoos could be fun. It can be as simple as making a Bridge 4 glyph stencil and then filling it in with a washable marker or face paint. Just make sure you're using something nontoxic and won't drip into someone's eyes if someone wants one on their forehead. Hijack a fire hydrant and simulate a Highstorm

  8. Writing is giving me a new appretiation for Brandon. I had to push myself to get 30,15 words today, and that was hard. Also my finger hurts like crap because of it. Yet Brandon wrote 19,000 words in a day to finish RoW and at one point wrote 29,000 in a day. Words cannot express how much I respect that man right now.

  11. The corollary here is that he could also be nudging his shots to hit correctly. Given W -> B -> T, if that is a direct straight path from his center-mass the bullet would have no change in trajectory; but if there is, for example, a 1 degree shift in his center mass down, then the bullet trajectory should shift 1 degree up. So his bullet pushes may not just be to push them faster, but to compensate any target shifts with minor changes to bullet trajectory.

  12. I think after I read Emperor's Soul, it made me wonder more and more what it was like for Brandon to finish The Wheel of Time. Shai delving into Ashravan's past, figuring out why he did what he did, reading his personal notes, then trying to recreate Ashravan as best she could and then tweaking things here and there to make her work into a better whole... that seems pretty similar to what Brandon did by looking through Robert Jordan's notes and trying to recreate an entire cast and world to match how people remembered The Wheel of Time. He probably took character sketches or snippets to Jordan's associates to see if what he wrote was familiar to the original work. For me, that added layer made Emperor's Soul a remarkable book. It's also ironically a commentary for the writer attempting to create realistic characters, but we probably don't think about that because Shai and Gaotona feel real. There's so many layers to how you can look at the book, and even down to the way that Shai perceives the world and considers the ramifications of everything happening outside of her little room to genuine wisdom in how you treat people or think of people, all of those make it an amazing book in my opinion.

  15. Hi everyone! I have accepted the inevitable and realized I have no choice but to dive as deep as I can into The Cosmere. I am new to this, having only read the first Mistborn trilogy and just finished Elantris a few moments ago. I can't get enough! I did not realize that all of this was set in some shared universe, and am now trying to learn as much as I can without spoiling as much as I can. Looking forward to some fun conversations and topics on these books! Now, I think I saw Warbreaker on my shelf somewhere...

Ill be honest Id prefer to vote for steeldancer I had that whole post and sorry Steeldancer that you couldnt understand it if you point to specific bits I can try to say it better but like seeing Elanderas reason for their vote on me just seems... weird? Like they say it was a poke vote trying to get me to do something but then they also say it was removed after no response then they also say there was no reason for the vote on Matrim after and... there kinda was? Like you have to infer it a bit but it came idrectly after a really weird vote by Matrim and was followed by Matrim acknowedgeing the vote as a chide for the bad vote so... Elandera for life and limb and a suspicion and raised eyebrows and stuff like I just dont get it and if you have time id appreciate a bit more thorough questioning Can anyone actally say whats been suspicious about me that hasnt been Stick doing weird stuff? Cause Sticks been doing weird stuff in relation to a lot of people and I dont appreciate being singled out like this Id love to actually do a post of substance but I really have to go Im being called away fro family game night and Im like legally not allowed to miss that so see you on the other side I guess bye

  20. After a two-year hiatus, we’re back with another round of Coppermind Objectives! We know that The Lost Metal isn’t too far off, and we’ll be releasing a series of Mistborn objectives when the release gets closer to prepare for that. But for now, there are plenty of other pages that need work, including Cytoverse, Stormlight Archive, and even the Reckoners. There are tons of ways to help, so we hope you’ll join in! We’ll happily accept any assistance we can get, so don’t be shy. If you're new to editing the Coppermind, don't worry; we'll help you out with guides and plenty of assistance. You don't need experience or expertise, just the will to help out! We'll also give you Coppermind awards, because there’s nothing more fun than fake internet points. Without further ado, here are our objectives for June and July. If you find something you'd like to help with, claim it here, and let us know if you have any questions! If nothing in the list below catches your eye, there are leftover objectives from previous months up for grabs in the claim spreadsheet. If you sign up for something, please say hi on Discord so that we can offer support and touch base with you! Larger Projects Let's start with some larger projects. These objectives will definitely require some research and a good bit of writing. Anyone is welcome to take them - we just don't want you to feel like you've bitten off more than you can chew. 1. Superiority First up is the Superiority, the giant multi-species nation that governs most of the known universe in the Cytoverse books. This page already has all the information from Skyward and Starsight on it, but needs to be updated with Cytonic and the three Skyward Flight novellas. 2. Detritus The Detritus page barely has any information on it right now, despite all we know about both the planet and its platforms. The page needs info from all the Cytoverse books, including the novellas. If you’re confused about how to organize the information on such a broad topic, we’ll be happy to help! 3. Shallan’s Rhythm of War History Despite being one of the main characters in the Stormlight Archive, Shallan’s History section is very lacking when it comes to info from Rhythm of War. It only has a few short paragraphs, but her actions in the book need to be explained in greater detail. This job is straightforward, but will require a good deal of reading and research. 4. Earth (Reckoners) Reckoners isn’t Brandon’s most popular series, but it still needs plenty of work! There is plenty of information to be unpacked about the world itself, but right now there’s not much on the page besides a list of the different Fractured States. This one will require a good deal of research, but it badly needs some work. 5. Morriumur Morriumur is part of the main crew in Starsight, yet their page is quite lacking. They don’t have a history section or a relationship section at all. They have an Appearance and Personality section and an Attributes and Abilities section, but even those need more filling out. This page needs a bunch of info, but it also has the advantage of Morriumur only appearing in one book so far. 6. Vapor Similar to Morrimur, Vapor is an important character who only appears in Starsight, but needs lots of info. She only has about a paragraph in her history section, and not much else. She’ll need all the various sections filled out with info from Starsight. 7. Trackt The Trackts are a fairly important element in White Sand, serving as the law enforcement in Lossand. Their page barely has any information as of now, but there’s a fair bit to be unpacked from the books. This would include their organization and how they operate, as well as their notable activities. Smaller Tasks These are objectives that won’t take as much heavy research and writing, and won’t take as long to do. Many of these may take some more careful digging, which can be made a lot easier if you have the ebook for the relevant book. 1. Rock’s Relationships Rock is a popular character from the Stormlight Archive, and most of his page is pretty well filled out. However, he doesn’t have a Relationships section, despite having a full family, and close bonds with various members of Bridge Four. This project will require a decent amount of research, but should be fun to do and not take super long. 2. Shu-Korath Shu-Korath is one of the major religions on Sel in Elantris, and already has a decent amount of information on its page. However, it only has one citation on the entire page. The page could use a bit more filling out, particularly about their beliefs, and it needs citations for the whole page. 3. Teshav Khal Brightlady Teshav Khal is the wife of General Khal, and the scribe for both him and Dalinar. She appears several times in Oathbringer, and has a few appearances in Rhythm of War, where she accompanies Dalinar to Emul. Her history section just needs updating from both books, and should be fairly straightforward. If you have Oathbringer or Rhythm of War in ebook form, using the search function will make the job a lot easier. (And if you don’t, many of our staff have the ebooks, and would be happy to help) 4. Stoff Stoff is a Vice Admiral in the DDF, and an important character in Evershore. He currently only has one sentence on his page, despite there being quite a bit to cover about him. He’ll need an Appearance and Personality section and a History section, though likely not Relationships or Attributes and Abilities sections. He only appears in Evershore, which is only a novella, so his page won’t take super long to complete. 5. Peg Peg, a pirate in Cytonic, is an important character for most of the book. She has her early history on her page already, but will need the rest of it filled out, as well as the other usual sections. 6. Rinakin Rinakin doesn’t do a whole lot for most of ReDawn, but is still a fairly important character to the story. He already has well written Appearance and Personality and Attributes and Abilities sections, but is lacking both History and Relationships sections (though the latter will likely just need to include Alanik). This one will be pretty short, and again, having the ebook will likely make the job much easier. 7. Nedd Strong’s History Nedd is one of the original members of Skyward Flight, and still quite active. His other sections are quite good, but his History section needs updating with info from all three Skyward Flight novellas. 8. Arturo Mendez’s History Like Nedd, Arturo is one of the original members of Skyward Flight, and is still quite active. His other sections are fully filled out, but his History section needs updating with info from all three Skyward Flight novellas. 9. Matthew Cobb Last but not least, we have Admiral Cobb, another Cytoverse character. His other sections are fairly good, but his History section needs updating with info from Starsight, as well as all three novellas. Four books is a lot, but he doesn’t do a lot of active things in those books like he does in Skyward, so it shouldn’t be too big of a task. What’s in it for me? We want to motivate people to help, so we will be giving out Coppermind awards for the users in the coming months with the most edits, and we'll also give out awards if you contributed to one of these items. They'll be on your user page for all to see. How do I start? The most important thing is to be bold! Content is hard to write, but we can always format your stuff if it doesn't quite match conventions. MediaWiki notation may appear scary at first, but the best way to learn is through experience. If you're interested, we have lots of guides to help, which you can find here: Help:Contents. It does very much help to have ebooks so you can find instances of a specific word or person (this is extremely helpful for minor characters). If you have physical books, ask us and we can help you pin down chapters so you don't need to reread the whole text. We can also direct you towards some good articles to use as a go-by. Come join us on the dedicated Coppermind Discord, or chat in the #coppermind channel on the 17th Shard Discord. We are really happy to help!

  21. So pitting a shardbearer against a cannon is an entirely different scenario than pitting one against guns. Sure, the shot might not actually break the blade if blocked by it, but conservation of momentum is still going to kick in, even if the shardbearer tries to brace. For a non-surgebinder, this would without a doubt kill them. Now, with a surgebinder there will be a lot of factors, but I think a cannon is going to do a substantial amount of damage. Yes, they can probably regenerate it with stormlight, but it would take a lot because the amount of internal injuries would be immense and, unless they took the hit just right, they probably wouldn't be in a condition to breathe in more stormlight until they've had a chance to heal a bit (like how Kal couldn't breathe in more light when the Pursuer kept severing his spine.)

  24. This has been mostly debunked But mostly the timeline doesn't add up: the False Desolation occurred around the same time as the Recreance--about 2,000 years prior to the present day Hoid's story tells us “Those are the events we focus upon, the ones men know the best. To speak only of them, however, is to ignore the history of three hundred years that led up to them" so Vo and the foudning of halandren was 300 years before the Manywar (Warbreaker Ch 32) The Manywar was a global conflict on Nalthis that involved the nations of Hanald (the original name of Hallandren), Kuth, Huth, Pahn Kahl, Tedradel, and Gys.[2] It occurred about three hundred years before the Pahn Kahl rebellion (Coppermind excerpt) “Five kings,” she said. “In three hundred years?” (Warbreaker Ch 32) Siri mentioning how long it has been since Idris split from Hallendren at the end of the Manywar So, if it has only been 600 years since Vo, the First Returned and Vasher returned sometime between that and the Manywar (300 yrs ago); then Vasher could not have visited Roshar before the Recreance (2000 yrs ago).

Also, did anything important happen? I've got 82 notifications and I lack the willpower to go through them all.

It is nice to have supportive friends here and in person. My family is so homophobic and that makes it so that I can't tell them that I am pan and all that jazz. Also just thought that you guys should know, I really don't care what pronouns that you use for me. School ended a week ago. Unfortunately so did my seasonal depression and PTSD. I have anxiety and when I can't stay in the loop with my friends (I am almost 16 and my parents still wont get me a phone) it gets worse. You guys do help a lot and it is great to talk with you. I will be on here even less then I was during the school year and just want you guys to know that you are all great and supportive people. So that is all that is up with me.

  27. My guess? His Steelsight been giving him far, far more information on the trajectory and accuracy of his shooting for decades. Unlike people who have to fire a gun and then go down range to see where they hit on the target, he can feel the bullet as it travels and know exactly where it lands in relation to where he thought he was aiming. This additional sensory feedback with likely hundreds if not thousands of hours of practice lets him make ridiculously precise shots, even though he couldn't shoot worth beans in the SoS prologue. We also know he experiments with these kinds of things, practicing getting shot while wearing padding to try to deflect bullets with Steel, and seeing if he could outdraw someone in a standoff while using practice blanks, etc. He's likely been adapting, learning, and refining his technique the whole time. Wax also gets sensory feedback on his targets' positions if they happen to be wearing metal, based on money in wallets, buckles, guns, buttons, ammo, etc.. With the trick shot of hitting a bullet from a speed bubble, he could directly sense his target if he so chose. He is supernaturally good, but I think it's more to do with his supernatural senses than anything else.

  28. Speak for yourself, this is my dream. Like there is absolutely no way you can convince me that there's never been anything romantic between them, at least just feelings for eachother. I mean have you seen the way the talk about eachother??? "Mostly unchained" yeah okay gayboy. I mean seriously, "someone's mind controlled but there feelings for their love interest are strong enough to break through" is a trope about as old as mind-control tropes themselves. (And yes what moash has going on isn't "technically" mind control but it's close enough for these purposes). And then there's lines like "Kaladin had opened his heart to this man" and a distinct separation drawn between his relationship with Moash and his relationship with the rest of bridge four. And then of course there's teft's "storm you moash at least kaladin loves me". Like they're dynamic makes sooooo much sense when you look at it as romantic. (tbh, brandon is way better at writing romances when he's trying to write friendships than he is when he's trying to write actual romances imo.) Now, they've both done a whole lot to hurt eachother and I think it's entirely possible that there's too much between them for them to ever have any kind of healthy relationship in the future even if moash does get a redemption arc (which he better), but in my heart of hearts i just want them to kiss and make up. Thank you for coming to my ted talk. (And remember, it's pride month so you're legally not allowed to disagree with me about this, i don't make the rules)

  29. Something I think is lacking from this discussion is that, as Duxredux pointed out, hard-vs-soft magic is a narrative tool. I'm reminded of how when Jim Butcher was asked which he preferred, he said something along the lines of, "all magic is hard, its just depends on whose head your in. If you follow a character who doesn't know how the magic works, it will seem soft. But to the author all magic systems are hard because the author knows exactly what the magic can or can't do." Where this enters into our discussion here is that, in general, those of us who discuss magic mechanics here in the forums are closer to the author perspective. We are learning the fundamentals of how investiture works and are able to piece things together from multiple invested arts by comparing and contrasting the different manifestations of investiture. This does not mean that Whimsy can't have invested arts that seem random and soft. It just means that it will be a "bounded randomness." To the people of Whimsy's world, they might believe there is no reason whatsoever to the magic, but we as the fans will probably see some of the underlying principles of investiture, even if there's no way the people in-world could know about it. All of Sanderson's magic seems very hard to us when in-world its a lot softer.

  34. Here are some ideas for which I can provide recipes and/or links - though most can also be easily searched on Wikipedia or cooking sites Women's food Kabuli Palau A version of Rice Pilaf named after Kabul Afghanistan. Basmati rice (preferably Afghan Rice) is soaked for an hour, then rinsed to remove excess starch before cooking in stock. Then, what sets this apart, raisins are rehydrated in stock, then cooked with carrot and almond slivers in oil and sugar/honey. The rice is put into a dish and topped with the carrot mix and finished in the oven. Qorma Can use any preferred meat, but mutton/lamb is how I learned the dish. It's a type of curry where the meat is seared on high heat, then you add the vegetables, fruit (raisins or dates if desired),a minimum of liquid and yogurt and braise to desired doneness. Mild Tom Kha Gai Thai coconut curry soup. Gai means chicken, and you can make with other proteins (e.g. Shimp is Tom Kha Goong) but the soup is primarily galangal (which you may approximate with ginger), lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk. Pumpkin Cookies Moist, slightly sweet pumpkin cookies, with or without additions (nuts, chips, etc.), make a good desert option Men's Food Katsu Curry A Japanese curry that can be made as spicy as you want; typified by a fried cutlet (usually pork or chicken) in a curry sauce (with or without vegetables) and topped as desired (diced hard-boiled egg, or fried garlic are common). Served with rice. Spiced Wings/Nuggets Bone in or boneless; either way you start with a brine that has a citrus with garlic and whatever chili you want (based on desired heat level). After brineing, rinse and cook in the oven until cooked through (can be done a day or two before). On the day of the party you season and deep fry the wings crispy if bone-in - or - bread and fry the nuggets (boneless) (this two-stage cooking lets you fry at a higher temperature to get crispy outsides without worrying about being raw in the center). The boneless version could also be used to make a Chouta if combined with pita/flatbread and a curry sauce. Chili Any version of chili should work, but I suggest layering the spice. First, whatever your hottest chili will be (habanero, serrano, etc) is used in the meat marinade and in the soaking stock for the beans. The second spiciest chili (serrano, jalapeno, etc.) is used to make the chili base (caramelized onion sauteed with garlic, chili, bell pepper, tomato - then pureed smooth). The weakest chili is used in the final product - this should let the heat build the more that is eaten without being so hot as to blow out the palette on the first bite. Mole Brownies Traditional brownie recipe, but the milk is steeped with chilis (type depending on how spicy you want it), and the flour is seasoned with cinnamon, clove (and other mole spices, if desired). Can be baked as cupcakes (or a muffin-top pan) to make individual servings.

  38. I’ve finished The Stormlight Archive twice (only twice, I know…), and my opinion of Moash has changed drastically during my reread. At first, I completely and utterly hated him without regret. Then, on my reread, I was able to appreciate the depth of his character. I find myself half wanting him dead, and half wanting him to get the best redemption arc ever. I’m pretty sure on other bases (like tumblr or reddit) there’s a really strong This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules Moash group which I don’t like the idea of, mostly because they don’t appreciate the dimensions of his character, at least from what I’ve seen. I’ll put my full opinion of Moash below, but I’m asking you guys what you think about Moash, and what you want to see happening to him in the next few books vs. what might actually happen etc. Also, my sister said she believes Moash “did what he had to do” but upon further questioning doesn’t give me any answers, so if someone could please explain what you think she might mean? Okay, my opinion, all over the place, and based off several points i saw on reddit/tumblr + my own beliefs (so some of these arent my own): (TL;DR - i have a love-hate relationship. i can understand why he did what he did, but i still hate him for it. i want him to drop dead and iw ant to see a sick redemption arc.still figuring out my position.) People ask why we hate Moash so much when Dalinar did so much worse, and I definitely agree, but one of the reasons might be because Moash doesn’t take responsibility for his actions whilst Dalinar does (ft. epic Oathbringer you cannot have my pain) its not about fairness or jstuice for him most of the time, its revenge. hes eager to take advantange, but not to take responsibility. he takes the path of cowardice and refuses to be held accountable for his choices. (but then, can we htae him for being human?) he feels bad, but a bad that leads to “I wish I could have done it without feeling pain” rather than “I wish I didnt do it” (yes, yes we can) also he doesnt fight against oppression, he fights against lighteyed oppression, and thinks that fused oppression is better HE KILLED TEFT </3 I’m open to the idea of a redemption arc, I don’t like him at all but understand the reasoning behind his choices. I’m willing to give him a chance. About Elhokar…I don’t know how I feel about him still. Elhokar had potential and Brandon was trying to make us feel that, and I kidna WAS feeling that. But I do understand that Elhokar was Moash’s Amaram, almost. His black cloak on the hill RoW scene was pretty cool I gotta admit it SUICIDE BAITING KALADIN. I can’t seem to get past this. As someone who’s been struggling with getting help for my depression and suicidal thoughts for years, I felt this on a different level. NOT OKAY, MOASH! But my lovely sister (who compares my depression to Kaladin’s then invalidates both of ours) believes she understands why he did that, and in his own way he was genuinely trying to make Kaladin feel better. maybe he was. (he wasnt) HE LITERALLY TRIES TO KILL KAL, WHO SAVED HIS LIFE he’s a nuanced character and i can appreciate that he chooses to stay with bridge 4 then betrays them betrays many oaths and promises he makes, constantly lies (but who didnt?) in case you forgot, teft went from “im broken” to “im loved” as he died Hes completely aware and happy that odium took away his emotions and whenever hte bond weakens he panics and tries to get it back immediately instead of going “omg no emotions made me do terrible stuff” I hope odium throws him off and leaves him blind, alone, and with a mountain of guilt. Once again I will support a redemption arc if he feels the pain of what hes done i dont reeeallyyy appreciate how brandon (maybe unconsciously) framed the victim of racism, being a poc myself i can understand a few of the things moash felt (kinda) (ig) so i can feel some, SOME level of sympathy for moash. moash, not vyre id want more from brandon around the racism thing tho. lots of potential that moash had before he went into this downward arc. i feel like hes being framed as ur typical villain and slowly losing hsi humanity so i dont really like that but yeah I might add more later.

  39. I think part of what really turned Moash into a full villain is that he continued on his vengeance after the larger external threat of Odium became obvious, and indeed turned to Odium to achieve that vengeance, and also after it became irrelevant. His original intent against Elhokar was arguably justified, depending on your political/moral philosophy about when it's justified to revolt against a bad government/monarch... at that time, also, Odium wasn't known to anybody except Dalinar as a current threat. But now that threat is obvious, and anyway Elhokar is dead and Jasnah is beginning to put through major reforms, including abolishing slavery, with an eye to weakening/balancing the power of the Alethi monarchy. I think there's a parallel to the Fused pursuing their war after it's lost its initial purpose- now they're basically parasites enslaving and even stealing the bodies of the singers, not fighting for their freedom in any real sense.

The comment that he talks to cremlings, is perfect enough to show his gentle nature as you say, but out of the way enough to require a pause to think about it.
