  1. Day 1: Fateful Greetings Dalinar Kholin watched the delegation move across the Shattered Plains. The bridges joining the plateaus moved slowly, armored chulls dragging their immense frames with methodical slowness. The bridges were sturdy, capable of supporting a cavalry charge, and his folk walked confidently across it. This peace treaty could be a gift from the Almighty. With the war ended, he could get the fractured political leaders of his people back home, governing as they were meant to. Alethkar could cease pouring years of resources into an endless war, and use her newfound unity to become strong and prosperous. But first, peace had to come. Not everyone would be happy with it. Many of the Highprinces loved the play-act of war that this had become. No real risk to themselves, and a great deal of financial gain from the gemhearts of the plateaus. Some might even violently object. He looked back at his company, walking over the chasms. He hoped no traitors walked among them. -------------------------------------- Eshonai sat in nimbleform, on a rocky mount overlooking the meeting plateau. The Alethi had come armed, of course. That was to be expected. She hummed the Rhythm of Satisfaction, though. After years of war, she had offered a peace token and he had actually come! There might be a way to save her people after all. But she had heard worrying rumors from the scholars - rumors of new and dangerous forms, connected with their gods. Some among them might be desperate enough to assume those forms. She would have to keep a close watch on her own. -------------------------------------- Day 1 has begun! It will end in 48 hours. Remember that there is no Night Cycle - all actions are performed during the Day Turn, along with votes and the lynch. 3. Two men stood at the edge of the world. "Are you contemplating what I'm contemplating Petyr?" "Sure am Cranium. But how will we get three Chulls into one pair of Horneater pants?" "No Petyr. It's time for us to do our thing." "And what thing is that Cranium?" "Why it's the same thing we do every game. Try to take over the world." Petyr and Cranium are joining the fun.

  4. Well I was looking at the coppermind entry on parshendi forms. The artform one is particularly interesting: “ Artform applied for beauty and hue. One yearns for the songs it creates. Most misunderstood by the artist it's true, Come the spren to foundation's fates.” —90th stanza of the Song of Listing[12] “ Artform for colors beyond our ken; For its grand songs we yearn. We must attract creationspren; These songs suffice 'til we learn.” —279th stanza of the Song of Revision[13] This is the only entry with two songs. The traditional Song of Listing, and the Song of Revision, what appears to be the modern iteration of Song of Listing, carried down orally over the centuries. Only somewhere in that transmission, a pretty significant change got made. Originally, the song says that to find artform, you need a spren that artists don't understand. The modern version says you need creationspren, which is probably the spren artists understand most of all. This seems a pretty dramatic change. During the time of the SA books, the parshendi are searching for artform by trying to attract creationspren. But this seems to be incorrect. It seems to me that this is proof that the songs have been tampered with. Something perhaps deliberately obscured the secret of artform from the parshendi. And they may well have tampered with other parts of the song too. It seems an awful lot like Venli was under Odium's influence before she ever took on stormform. We've never really figured out what caused that... But I think it was something in the songs. I'm betting that there's something in the songs that Odium planted there, which is what originally corrupted Venli and made the release of the everstorm possible.

  5. I recently saw a thread in which the morality/honor of the Knights Radiant was discussed. By the time I read it the discussion had moved past these things and it was only tangentially related so I did not comment. Also, the post is in the Oathbringer spoiler thread, so I won't link to it here... The general sense/opinion I got from the brief discussion there was that a Radiant can be immoral but that all Radiants could be considered honorable as they are required to base their actions on a code. I'm not sure I agree with these statements, and I think it's because of differing definitions of honor and morality. I also believe the key term that is missing is ethics. So, I thought I'd share my own interpretation and how I believe they relate to the Knights Radiant and see how they are received. First, morality: In my opinion, morality is based on one's own understanding of what is "right and wrong". That is to say that it is an internal definition unique to every individual, which is shaped heavily by upbringing and culture, so people in similar situations often have very similar definitions of morality. By this definition a person would consider themselves a "moral" person if they do what they think is right. If that person is relatively sane and you are brought up in similar cultures/circumstances, likely you would consider that person moral as well. But if two people are brought up in completely different circumstances or cultures, then what one considers moral the other may consider immoral. I think that questions of morality are often further complicated by implications of a universal right and wrong... but those arguments are for philosophers and religious leaders, and I don't think they need to be discussed in this context. Next, ethics: To the best of my understanding ethics deal with whether something is "right or wrong" based on external and often explicitly defined qualifications. By this definition a decision or action is considered ethical relative to a specific code if it does not violate the rules/guidelines of that code. An ethical code is external and may contradict a persons own sense of morality. Now there somewhat of a chicken/egg scenario here as ethical codes are often expressed as representations of what the people in a society/culture generally deem moral. So the culture's sense of morality shapes their ethics and exposure to those ethics during formative years shapes an individual's internal morality and so on... Finally, honor: This one is more difficult as I believe it usually has a concrete sense/definition within a culture, but how one demonstrates honor can vary wildly from culture to culture. In my opinion honor usually relates to a somewhat nebulous ethical code within a society/culture, this "code of honor"often defines how a person demonstrates respect for themselves and others. Finally, with my own quibbling over definitions done, my thoughts on how these things relate to the Stormlight Archives and the orders of the Knights Radiant My interpretation is this: Each order of the Knights Radiant essentially defines an ethical code which resonates with the nature of the spren of that order. Those ethical codes share a common base in The First Ideal and are further expressed by the other 4 ideals of each order. Presumably, a spren chooses a person because they show signs of instinctively acting according to the ethical code of one of the orders. When a proto-Radiant begins a bond with a spren he/she begins to have their own sense of right and wrong influenced by their interactions with that spren. As that shaping progresses, if the potential Radiant acts morally, and their sense of morality begins to more acutely coincide with the ethical code associated with the order, the ideals become apparent and the proto-Radiant progresses in their bond. So, in my opinion a Full Knight Radiant will be a person who IS moral and whose internal sense of morality completely coincides with the ethical code of their order. If a person begins to act immorally (according to their own sense of morality, not yours or mine) or unethically (according to the code of ethics as defined by the ideals they've sworn) the bond will fail. As for honor, I'm guessing the general Rosharan sense of honor will most closely relate to the ethical code of the Windrunners, and I consider it completely likely that members of certain orders may be seen as dishonorable in many circumstances while still acting according to their own order's ethics. If you managed to suffer through my ramblings, I'd be interested in any other thoughts/opinions... Thanks!

  6. I wouldn't be surprised if they did test infants, since burning can be instinctual and infants are basically bundles of instincts and reflexes. Maybe the hospital has a Seeker in the maternity ward? "Sign here to agree to have your child tested for allomancy. And here for her first vaccines."

  7. The Long Trail. It’s speculated on a bit in the past, so not all these ideas are mine, but I want to bring together what we know, propose the possible history of the Iriali and open it up to comments. For background, the Iriali are a group of people from Iri, on Roshar. Iri was one of the Silver Kingdoms, though part of it split off. Iriali are distinctive for having golden hair, yellow eyes and a yellow tinge to their skin. Ym was Iriali, and talked about the religion of One as well as the Long Trail. One was God, and knew everything but experienced nothing, so split itself apart into different life to experience everything. When all becomes One again, One will absorb these experiences essentially. As for the Long Trail, Roshar is the fourth land the Iriali have been in, and when they get to the seventh, all will become One again. So the relevant speculation is what were the first three lands they were in. Braize was not one While it is far from a reliable way to do it, I’ve tried looking at people with yellow or golden hair in the Cosmere. Yes, I’m aware that golden hair shouldn’t be unusual, Earth humans have it. But it’s a start. The main ones I could find were: Taldain - Kenton has golden blonde hair and a slightly tan, to brown complexion, as a result of his half-Darksider heritage. Kenton's eyes are naturally blue. However, when he uses the full might of his sand mastery powers, his eyes glow with a golden light and his pupils seem to contract or disappear, leaving only the white of his irises (from the Coppermind). Sel - The Patriarch from Elantris, and Ashravan from TheEmperor’s Soul, both have golden hair. Nalthis – This is the obvious one. The Royals’ hair goes yellow when they are happy or excited. Additionally, Lightsong’s niece had golden hair before she died. And when Vasher manifests his divine breath, appearing Returned, he has golden hair. And yes, Returned and Royals’ can change their hair color. But golden seems to be, hmmm, the natural color? The only person I could find in Mistborn 1 that has golden hair was Allriane. I think Nalthis is the strongest connection, especially in light of this WoB So let’s (tentatively) lock in Nalthis. Basic idea would be that the Iriali emigrated there, and were possibly the shipmates of Vo, the first Returned, who established Hellandran. For more possible support for Nalthis, Cuseiach the Protector is in Iri and some of the Iriali worship it by putting down golden petals as an offering. Sound familiar? Tears of Edgli perhaps? Of those stories, Nalthis was the most recent in Cosmere chronology. So which one before that? I feel Sel is stretching the link. But let’s put it as a doorstop for now and go back one step, to Taldain. Kenton, a sandmaster, had golden hair. But significantly, it seems his eyes would glow gold when fully using kinetic investiture. This could make a lot of sense for the descendants of sandmasters to have yellow eyes on Roshar. Eyes seem to be a window to the soul there more than in other places, so perhaps it got to the point where that color became permanent in offspring of sandmasters using investiture. To the connection that I feel makes Taldain the strongest – the tie-in of the religion of One, and Bavadin. We know from plenty of WoBs (I’ll put them in if it becomes important) that Bavadin, holder of the Autonomy Shard, masquerades as various gods and hijacks existing religions. Bavadin is worshipped as both a man and a woman, and in some pantheons is every god in the religion. Sound familiar? “The One, who is both male and female, did so to experience all things”. This could explain why the holder of a Shard of Autonomy masquerades as a religious figure. She knows everything, but her Intent of Autonomy drives her to experience things through the autonomy of individuality. Perhaps One is Autonomy. Given the doubt with Sel, this leaves two options if I’m correct. The three preceding lands were Taldain, Sel and Nalthis, or they were Yolen, Taldain and Nalthis. Of course other options are Threnody (but it’s not a Shardworld),Scadrial (could be? I’ve seen nothing for it but nothing against it), Ashyn (possibly, with the proposed link to the Tranquiline Halls – but again, nothing to go on). Of course Yolen is an obvious option, people could have left en masse to escape fain life. However, if Yolen is, I’d say it rules out the Bavadin = One option, and makes it much more likely that Adonalsium = One. That has some merit for it as well, with Adonalsium splitting into component parts. I prefer the Bavadin idea, but Adonalsium is a sensible possibility. I feel pretty confident about Nalthis, and semi-confident about Taldain. The remaining one is up in the air. Here finally are a couple of WoBs to add to the mix, for linguistic/family tree types. So, happy to hear thoughts on why Nalthis and Taldain make sense, and speculation on whether Sel, Yolen or somewhere else is the remaining one of the three so far. But the moral is I think the Iriali were on Nalthis, I think they were on Taldain, I think that perhaps Bavadin is One. Over to you

  8. I think Moash is a bit naive and got sucked in by Graves' charm. Considering that while Graves was working to kill Elhokar, other Diagramists were working to kill Dalinar, I'd guess that Graves' stated intention of saving Alethkar from an incompetent king and bringing about the rule of integrity and strength through Dalinar is, at best, deliberately misleading, and, more likely, an outright lie. I assume he's actually trying to unite as much of Alethkar under Mr. T as possible, or failing that, splinter the kingdom so Mr. T can pick up as many of the pieces as he can later. That said, I like all of the Diagramists we've seen so far and how they contribute to the narrative. They believe, with fairly good reason in my opinion, that what they're doing is necessary for the survival of mankind. The fact that they might be wrong and consistently do evil things makes them unethical, dishonorable, and loathsome, but many of them actually display evidence of strong moral fiber and high intelligence; some of their moral codes are bizarre, but that doesn't make them invalid. They represent a powerful, and realistic, contrast to the Radiants. Where the Radiants are magically bound by rules and codes, the Diagramists are willing to do whatever they have to in order to ensure victory, which is reminiscent of real-life nations for whom "honor" is much less valuable than "survival." Not every battle can be won through "leading by example," "being honorable," and "staying true to your self." Whether the battle against Odium is one of these times remains to be seen. It's possible the Diagramists are wrong and what they're doing is not only evil, but ultimately counter-productive, but, right or wrong, they make for an interesting faction.

  10. Major Spoilers for the Era1 Mistborn books. If you haven't read them, you have no business reading this stuff. Well, what I'm suggesting is that there is a difference between a Shard and a shard's power. The shard's power is pure investiture. And it has multiple forms. However, the shard itself is that entity flying around doing stuff. We also know that it is possible to take some of the shard's power and separate it from the shard. You want an example? Take a look at Ruin. Preservation was able to lock the Shard in a place where it didn't have access to it's power. And even after it escaped, it was still missing a good portion of it's power (the atium). Another look? Kelsier took up the Shard of Preservation, but he didn't have access to nearly as much power as Vin did. And I think part of that is that he didn't draw the mist into himself. That is one core difference between their two ascensions: Vin had the shard, as well as the power found within the mists, but didn't have access to the investiture that is in Alomancers (the lerasium). Kelsier however didn't draw in the mists, maybe because his lack of a physical body stopped him. Making him much weaker than Ati. Ati also had access to most of his power, except for his Atium. This is why Vin and Ati were balanced. As for an argument saying that Vin ascended because she drew in the Mists, I think that's only partially right. A human who drew in that much investiture would die from it. However, Kelsier released the shard, allowing Vin to take it up at the same time as she took up the mists. Thus when she was done, not only had she ascended (IE taken up the shard that Kelsier had released) but she also had access to much of the Shard's power. What I'm saying is that the Dor is the combined investiture of Devotion and Dominion. What was splintered was the shards themselves. So, Odium killed the vessels, locked the investiture (read: power) of the shard into the CR, then took the shard itself and splinter it. The splinters of the shards eventually rebuilt sentience and became Seons and Skaze. So, if you were to combine the Seons and Skaze, you would ascend. That is what allows you to ascend: The pieces of the shards, not the investiture. Essentially, you would be an even weaker version of ascended Kelsier. However, you would still be a shard, would be able to draw the Dor into yourself, restoring yourself to a full dual shard. Now, If my theory that there is a difference between the Shard and it's power is wrong, then my entire theory falls apart, but I don't tjink I'm wrong. I think there is a real difference between a Shard and it's investiture.

  11. I guess that this is a place to introduce myself, which I'm not very good at. I've been reading Sanderson books for ~4 years now, but only just decided to join here as I've been rereading all the Cosmere novels. I'm 25, a pastor, and enjoy reading, video games, and playing sports. I don't really know what else to say about myself, so instead meet my kitten, Lightsong the Bold! Below pictured reading Arcanum Unbounded, because he's a Sanderson fan, too. Also, if you want to know anything about me, feel free to ask me anything.

  12. Normally, I would agree. However, we have this WoB. There is "one" and "it," which lack plurality. And since he was considering making it a proper chapter, it's more connected to the main story than we'd think.

  13. No. I am almost certain that Taravangian has stated that Nergaoul moves too, and his area of influence should move with him. Line of questioning needs improvement. Try to ascertain their origin point and/or their order of travel(Q28). We know that you can make a weak spike from a Lifeless, but we don't know if you can give them powers. Good question. Additionally, we should ask about Lifeless that were made in "the old way" without using Ichor-Alcohol. Now for a few questions of my own. Hemalurgy... again... but only about the blood(which somehow makes it less morbid) For a species with an open circulatory system, where hemolymph is analogous to blood, would they still fit the "moving blood" requirement for Hemalurgy? From same source as 1: (I know this is mostly flatworms and jellyfish), but would a species with no circulatory system be viable to use Hemalurgic spikes? How about Lifeless made without Ichor-Alcohol? Are they viable to use Hemalurgic Spikes? What actually makes "the old way" different from the Ichor-Alcohol method? How does one actually prepare the body with the alcohol vs how the body is prepared in the old method? Would a Steel Inquisitor turned into a Lifeless after dying retain their powers? (Use generic Allomancer if need be) Would they retain the mental capacity to use those powers, the way Lifeless soldiers retain their muscle memory? Are Lifeless physically able to ingest metals in order to use Allomancy? Could a Steel inquisitor on Nalthis become a Returned, or do the spikes interfere with the Divine Breath? Would adding spikes to a Returned interfere with the Divine Breath in some way? A Nicrosil Compounding Returned could essentially live forever, no? Agelessness is from the 5th Height, but when Returned suppress their Divine Breath, they are not at the 5th Height. Would they grow older while suppressing, or is this another passive effect that they cannot turn off? Has anyone in the Cosmere used Hemalurgy to steal something besides a power?(Koloss/Kandra Spikes don't count) If yes, what did they steal? What is the strangest non-power attribute someone in the Cosmere has stolen with Hemalurgy? What is the strangest non-power attribute that can be stolen with Hemalurgy? (besides writing skill)

  14. I think the most beautiful fictional religion is that of Ym. For those who don't remember it "He believes, long ago, there was only one being which he simply calls One. One knew everything but had experienced nothing. And so One became Many in order to experience all things. As each experience is different, it brings completeness to One. Eventually, all will be gathered back in when the sum of land is attained and they will once again become One. Every person is a different mind of a single being experiencing different lives. As Many, they need ignorance. Each fragment of the One’s mind has its own body with different passions and inclinations. They exist in variety to experience all kinds of thought. That means some people must know and others must not. Just like some people must be rich and others poor. This is why he is interested in collecting other people's experiences."

  17. There are several things that could happen to Odium in order to make the story different from Mistborn Era 1: 1. Odium frees himself, kills Cultivation and leaves Roshar. Rayse has no interest in the humans; he wants to take out Shards. I believe that SA could contain a quick explanation of what a Shard is, and let every reader be aware of the fact that Odiums goal is to kill them all. In order to make this plot cooler, Cultivation could be unwilling to sacrifice herself for Roshar, leading to one of the Radiants having to kill her, ascend, and sacrifice him/herself in order to have Odium leave. 2. Rayse dies, and someone else picks up Odium and leaves with the Shard in order to destroy it/ go as far away as possible before being consumed by the hatred of the Shard. 3. Odium is splintered. Most likely in my opinion, and as pointed out by @hwiles, it would be a conclusion we have not seen before. 4. Hoid does something wierd to Odium which fits his own agenda, and also solves the problems on Roshar.

  18. Honestly, this reminds me of Mistborn Era 1. I mean, you have the prophesies twisted by Ruin to release him from his prison. It would make sense for him to do the same thing to the Listener's songs to make sure that the forms that they actually find are the ones that will lead to war. Artform is a form that would only take away from a warlike people. At the same time, you also have smokeform: Though I feel like it applies to this one too. Most of the Songs of Secret are about the Unmade, and a couple speak of avoiding specific forms, like this one. However, while the Song of History's Stanza on Smokeform is very similar to it's Song of Secrets equivalent, it goes from heavy warning to avoid it all costs to saying that it is powerful, and ought to come again, despite being from an Unmade source. So, Artform, a form that does not lend itself to war is made less likely to be discovered, while Smokeform, a form probably as dangerous as Stormform, if not worse, has it's song altered to seem less evil, and more enticing.

  19. I disagree that Stormlight will be totally self contained. There´s too much characters from another books to believe that and a 10 book serie dealing directly with Odium MUST have a greater impact on the Cosmere storyline.

  23. Honestly, I don't see Odium being the main antagonist of the Cosmere. Currently, I don't see there being any one antagonist. He is in opposition to Hoid and the people of Roshar, but I don't see him being the main enemy of the Cosmere. If I'm not mistaken there's still whatever Harmony is keeping at bay... There are multiple potential antagonists for the Cosmere, and I don't see any one of them being the singular enemy.

  28. “Sometimes I wonder if I am the only real thing in a false world.” The voice echoed across a curious landscape. It was an island of sorts, surrounded by swirling mists. The ground was dark, smoky stone—that was how man perceived it, at least. “And other times I wonder if the world is rigid and true and I am what is changing, ever false, ever contradicting.” The speaker looked up at the sky, which was encompassed in a writhing mass of crimson tendrils pierced only by a too-small dot of light. “Identity has always puzzled me. Scholars throughout the æons have searched for a way to define who oneself is. Yet it is just who I am…” The island was covered in short scrubby plants except for a small area around a blazing green fire. A group of spirits stood in the cleared-out space with a cloaked figure at the center beside the fire. When he spoke next, it was with greater intensity. “…who we are. Is Identity how we were created, or how we choose to create ourselves? Do we bear our own souls, or are we ourselves carried along?” The cloaked man threw a pinch of dust in the fire, which flared up, illuminating the faces of the spirits. He looked into each one’s eyes. “Time flows like a river, and the day of proving approaches quickly. When sunset falls, chaos will be upon us. You will need to be prepared.” He took an ornate wooden box out of his pack. It was clearly aged; the wood was bent and covered in holes which emitted a faint glow. He opened the box, revealing rows of small brightly glowing objects, circular or hexagonal in shape and a couple inches in diameter. Each had a unique and intricate pattern carved into its face. “It is time to decide who you will be. Who you will fight for, and who you will fight against.” Above the hooded man, the sky rippled, tendrils casting faint shadows across the stone. One of the spirits stepped forward, reaching into the box and taking a single glowing piece. The others followed. “Who are you, little ones?” Lightning crashed, illuminating the red sky. “You are what the world needs to you to become.” Rules Ah, yes, right, businessy stuff, that’s my cue. [clears throat] Yes, well, my name is Phil! I’m the voice in your head who’s here to do all the businessy stuff related to this quest. Don’t worry about how I’m talking in your head or whose voice I stole or any of that stuff—I’m just a plot device here to repeatedly infodump you. We cool? So, the rules. Er, about that… well, you see, Mr. Hooded Cloak over there says I’m technically not supposed to tell you anything. But I’ve always been one to—shall we say bend the rules a little bit (excuse the pun). I mean, you guys have to have some kind of groundwork to go off of, right? So, to start out with, the game is divided into Day and Night turns which alternate as always. Day turns are 47 hours long with a 1 hour break afterward, and Night turns are 23 hours long, again with a 1 hour break afterward. If you want to be all technical about things, turns will end at 4 AM UTC and the next turn will begin at 5 AM UTC. You can normally take 2 actions each cycle (Day and Night). You can take both during the Day, both during the Night, or one of each, but no more than 2 actions each cycle, and you can’t use the same action more than once in the same cycle unless otherwise stated. If an ability lets you use more than 2 actions per cycle, there is an absolute maximum of 2 actions in the Day and 2 actions in the Night. Clear as mud, eh? Boom, order of actions. You’re welcome. There might be more stuff not on here because Mr. Hooded Cloak is so uptight about everything. You’ll get a notebook to record stuff in too, it’s only a page though so not much of a notebook. It gets shown to everyone once you die. Mr. Hooded Cloak keeps trying to get me to call it a Will but he’s really kind of a morbid guy. Trust me, you don’t want to get to know that git. Speaking of which, there’s a bunch of random stuff he wanted me to tell you. After you die you’ll return here for a couple cycles before “passing on” (see, morbid guy, right?) during which you’ll be “judged for your actions” and you might potentially change your outlook on life. That one’ll be important if you ever get brought back from the dead. He also told me "tie lynches are random" and “scans aren’t infallible” or something weird like that. And, oddly, he also wanted me to make sure to tell you that Wills aren’t carved in metal. I should also talk to you for a couple secs about greed and the universal language: gold. You can get 2 pieces of gold each cycle, one for posting some discussion related to the game and another for posting at least 200 words of in-character text. Here’s a piece of paper that Mr. Hooded Cloak left me listing a few “universal actions” which any of you guys can take: And that’s about it! Good guys win if they kill the bad guys, bad guys win if there are more of them than the good guys. I’ll let you know later on if I forgot to tell you anything. So, with all of this businessy stuff done, I wish you luck and bid you adieu. Have fun storming the castle! [CoGMs are Elenion and Jondesu. IM is Wilson.] Quick Links:

  29. Stormlight Archive is not supposed to be the end of the main storyline on Cosmere. For this very storyline to progress into the epic finale we all are eager to see, the main antagonist, the Shard of Odium, will have to be realeased from its investiture prision on the Roshar System. So, at one point or another (possibly on its resolution) Odium will be set free. The question is... will the final desolation happens, will be ther a cataclismic event that will destroy the planet and our favorite characters will flee via worldhopping? I would like to hear your toughts about that.

  37. We learn more about other unmade. We only have small amounts of facts on 3 of them, and the names of 6. I theorize there should be 9. We get great revelations about the Scouring of Aimia. One more of the 10 Fools is shown and attributes listed. A truth about the Nexus in Shademar is revealed. 10k hidden items will be placed throughout the story for us to debate and discuss for the next 3 years.

  38. The cognitive realm is never a globe. It is some sort of mapping of a three-dimensional sphere onto a surface in a three-dimensional plane. (that is, essentially, something like a very large blanket- it still has height/depth, but it has a "top" and a "bottom" that seem to be uniform, the bottom being loosely mapped to things in the Physical realm, and, if those of us who believe the sun in the Cognitive Realm is the Spiritual Realm, the top of the cognitive may have some interaction with it somehow) Remember, Brandon has given a WoB that something interesting would happen to a Spren (being native to the Cognitive realm that is two-dimensionally mapped to the Physical) that tried to circumnavigate the world. At some point, it would encounter the "edge" of Shadesmar, (that is, Cognitive Roshar as opposed to the entire CR) and might have difficulty moving any farther in that loop around spherical physical space. (he doesn't actually say the Spren would be stuck, he phrases it as a question, so maybe they teleport from one side of the plane in the CR to the other, who knows)

  39. Don't forget. She'll be riding around on a greatshell that sucks Stormlight out of people/things. I know it's unlikely, but I'm going to keep telling myself that, like Larkin, Lanceryn can still fly. So in my head, Rysn is paralyzed and it doesn't even matter cause she's riding a flying greatshell that feeds on Stormlight. I'll read that for years.

  43. They were completely tangential to the threads themselves. Doesn't start until page 4 of that one. There's some in the last couple pages of the Kaladin and Shallan thread, and another I can't remember. It's definitely worthy of its own thread. Edit: @king of nowhere The way that I see it. We were shown pieces of Gavilar's personality specifically to set up this reaction in us as readers. We see Gavilar through Dalinar's opinion mainly, and hear of his transformation near the end of his life, to set up the idea that as Dalinar has changed, so to did Gavilar. It's being slowly revealed that while yes, Gavilar changed, he was Galvanized towards a course of action that Dalinar and the Radiants we see would never choose. Those who did follow him have tried to continue what he started, and whether through coincidence or direct action, what they wanted is happening. We were handed the interpretation of the Oaths as their commonly interpreted through the Envisigera via Teft. The fact that that same oath can be interpreted in other ways is not brought up, I believe intentionally, so that we won't consider the idea of groups of Radiants that do not align themselves with our heroes. The reveal of Gavilar for what he is means that, at least in my opinion, we can't assume that "Radiant" means "good"

  44. I'm not making a false equivalence. This is a thing that's well-supported by WoBs, FiveLate. I think it's even in the Mistborn annotations, too. Intent is attached to the investiture which composes a Shard's body, which is why Atium tended to be used to violent effect, for instance, as opposed to mere self-preservation. (there was also the fact that it was so expensive you tended to use it in extremis, but that still wouldn't rule out running as a valid option...) I'm not sure why I've been getting so much pushback on this when it was like, one of the first things people started theorising about after AoL came out and we had eyes on Harmony, and it was literally just a small anecdote on why we should assume Brandon is in fact implying that Harmony is doing something with that extra Power that Ruin has in comparison to Preservation. The reason people were so keen to establish that he was doing something with Ruin's extra power was because they were worried it would unbalance his Intent. It may be that there's investiture out there that's not from the Shattering that is neutral of intent, or that has a different Intent to the sixteen shards, but as far as we can tell, every piece that composed the body of Adonalsium has some Intent attached to it. Presumably even the Dor is some mixture of Dominion and Devotion, (presumably, half of each) despite having no Vessel or magical sapience of its own to easily express its Intent through. But it's quite possible that Intent is limited only to the investiture that composes each Shard's body. I make no judgement on naturally-occured investiture that predates/doesn't relate to Adonalsium. But ask yourself this: If you could drain investiture from a Shard's body without its Intent affecting you, why hasn't Odium tried to do it? It's an obvious tactic given his objection to combining with other Shards is that he doesn't want to change his own Intent. Ruin's Intent didn't change when preservation siphoned off his extra power into Atium because he went from being 100% Ruin to being 100% Ruin, just with less investiture overall in the second 100%. Harmony's intent would change if he weren't doing something with that extra Ruin, as he would go from being 50% Preservation and 50% Ruin to some imbalanced number, like 55%/45% or 51%/49%. I'm honestly a little bit surprised that anyone thinks that the ratio of power from one shard to another wouldn't affect the combined Intent of, to borrow a political term, a Shard of Shards. (ie. a Shard composed of multiple Shards mixed together by one Vessel) This can't happen to an uncombined Shard, because if it gives away any of its investiture, there's no ratio to worry about. Endowment is still 100% Endowment when she gives away a Splinter to a new Returned.

  46. Okay, quick question: HOW is that Spider-Man? I just... Don't... Understand... But good job, @Sunbird, for spreading the awesomeness. If the entirety of this world read more Sanderson... It would be a different world. I know only two or three people who have managed to not become obsessed after trying one of his books, out of probably more than twenty. (And one of them wasn't interested enough in Harry Potter to finish the third book, so...) And, uh, you know you're a Sanderfan when you can spend as much time and thought as I did writing something like the above and imagining the repercussions of an entire world filled with sharders.
