  1. Guys, I need some good reasons for me not to leave the shard.

      Eluvianii

Since I was summoned here, my two cents would be that you do what you feel you have to, but only if you're convinced it's what you should do or want to do.

I've seen people leave because the Shard was becoming sort of an addiction for them, so they didn't want to leave but they made the choice for their own wellbeing. I've seen people leave because they aren't allowed in the Shard, and while I would have some things to say about that, I understand people can't exactly argue back to their parents on this sort of thing if they are underage. And of course, I've seen tons of people leave without a word, logging in less and less often as time goes on, probably becoming disinterested with time.

So I understand there are good reasons to leave, however, since you're asking for reasons to stay, am I right to think you want to be convinced? It's hard to choose the right thing to say without knowing your circumstances, and of course, I won't pry, so I'll make do with a few general questions.

Do you still have fun here? Do you have friends you value talking to here? Can you be in the Shard without it affecting your responsibilities irl?

Because if the answer to all of these is yes, then I think that's plenty of reason to stay.

If that is not the case, then can it change? If you're not having fun, is it a transitional thing that can right itself with time? If it's affecting your responsibilities, do you think yourself capable of measuring your time here so this becomes a healthy hobby? If that's the case, again, I think it's plenty of reason to at least give it a shot.

Your choice is yours to make, and whatever you choose we'll respect it, but if you actually want to stay, then I think you should make an effort to make it possible. I've seen very few people join the Shard and stay in the long run. It would be sad to lose another.

  2. Well, today is my Shardiversary. It's hard to believe that it's been a year, but at the same time it's hard to believe it's only been a year. It's been an adventure, for sure!

Recently, I've found myself increasingly reflective as I prepare to graduate high school and depart from my home. It's a melancholy time, but it's also filled with hope. And the memories I've made on the Shard, and the friends, connections, stories, jokes, adventures...they've changed me. I'm a different person than I was before. This year has been really tough for me, but having people here to give me advice and guide me through it, and honestly just having an outlet for the pain has really made a difference in my life. This is a special community, one that I'll always remember.

I think the people here are what makes this place so unique.

@The Wandering Wizard, the wonderful Wiz! You were one of the first people to help me feel like I belonged, and you've been a true friend to me, an amazing source of laughter and fun. Thank you for everything. @Robin Sedai, your sharing of Calvin and Hobbes and other comics when I first joined is one of my favorite memories on the Shard. I admire your voice of reason whenever things get a little unhinged.

@CalanoCorvus, you always bring optimism to conversations and give great advice. You and @DoomslugLuna are adorable. @SymphonianBookworm our conversations here will always make me smile. I know you haven't been as active recently (I miss you!), but I know you're going to do great things! #Phantom #Jasnahoid

@Telrao, come backkkkkkkk soon! I miss having someone to nerd out about jazz with. Your muffins and cats are iconic here on the shard. And your playlists are fantastic. Thank you for the wonderful art. @The Bookwyrm, your passion for space and astronomy really shines through. You're thoughtful and insightful, and our conversations keep me thinking for a long time after we're done. I'm looking forward to seeing where you'll end up!@Kajsa :), thank you for being a wonderful human being. You care about us, and you're just amazing. Your art is also out of this world! @That1Cellist, you are worth more than you could ever comprehend. You deserve the world. Thank you for sharing your love of cello with the world. @The Halcyon Girl, you are an amazing person. We miss you on the Shard. I'm so glad you commissioned that throne from me.

@InfiniteInsanity, you are kind and you have wonderful ideas to cheer people up. Your mission was such a sweet idea. When you're on sugar, now I know to runnnnn @The Aspiring Archivist, I'm glad I know you. Thank you for putting up with me and for being there for anyone who needs it. You have a nice voice, too. @Ranryu, your energy, and sense of humor make the world a better place. Best of luck to you with your piano and compositional career! @TheGreatSnail, aren't filters funny?? In all seriousness, those SU replys were fun. That was where it was at! @Wittles of Shinovar, WITTLESS Skittles, I admire the way you bring a positive attitude towards problems. It's not easy the way that life works out, but you're an amazing helping hand. @The Last Fæ, you often have something very interesting to share. I like the way that you think. @Potato's Wit, you're really funny. The things you share make me laugh a lot

@Morningtide, you're always so nice. I still can't believe there's an Idaho Potato Museum! @S. Stormy, diggin' the new branding. I love how you're always up for shenanigans and helping everyone here have a good time. @Cinnamon, you're down-to-earth and friendly, EVEN THOUGH you live life upside-down. That makes it even more special. @Thaidakar the Ghostblood, you're funny! And you always have quality things to share. @Sequence, you're always full of good vibes. It's always so interesting when you share the coolest info on planes and the like.

@Cruciatus_heart, Elfffffff! Your interest in a certain type of brooding slightly insane sociopath is very funny to me. You have excellent taste in media. Congrats on everything you've accomplished this year! @TheAlpha929, you're very chill, and just fun to be around. @Eluvianii, you have chill pfps and you have cool answers on the forum games.

Kasimir, Archer, Aman, Stick, Illwei-- you guys are all really cool. I'm happy to have gotten to play with all of you this year.

@Cash67 I never can remember if you're young but really wise for your age, or older but still really wise for your age. You are Perry the Platypus incarnate in the best way possible. SPEAKING OF PLATYPI, @Being of Cacophony, you are ALSO a pretty cool platypus. I like checking out TLT and seeing your chaos there. Cacophony is also a really fun word. @Edema Ruh, you'll remain an Aes Sedai in my mind for a very long time. Also, spontaneity is the best! And you're great at that. @Lotus Blossom, I'm so happy Symph got you to join the shard! You're a cool person

  3. I'm upset, flabbergasted, and quite annoyed.

So, if you guys didn't know, WIRED did a profile on Brandon Sanderson. Last year, Brandon invited the reporter into his home, showed him the company, his lifestyle, and how he writes, and was extremely open with him. The article is ruthless and in my opinion unnecessarily cruel to Sanderson. It mocks his religion, his community, the way he dresses, his family, his writing, people at conventions, and even the way his son eats...like storming what! It makes me pretty upset.

Anyway DONT look up the article cause it gives the article more clicks/revenue—if you want a good summary check out Daniel Greene's Video

    Spoiler

I mean, I get it if you don't like a person or their writing, but writing a condescending and elitist 4000 word essay about it seems unnecessary.

    1. Eluvianii

      Eluvianii

In a way, I thought it was funny. The author had nothing to talk about (I mean, he did, but apparently he didn't think Brandon was interesting so he said he didn't) and said so plainly.

So he proceeded to make things up.

I find it funny because it's clear this writer is incabaple of making an article that doesn't revolve around controversy of some kind. I wouldn't be surprised if his entire career is interviewing people and then proceeding to insult them over the smallest things.

He found nothing to insult about Brandon. He said so in the first few paragraphs, that the man was so normal and earnest he found him "lame".

So the fact that he explicitly says he has nothing to write, and then proceeds to write a 4000-word fantasy making Brandon up to be this evil, egomaniac genius. The fact that he even felt the need to drag his friends, family, and beliefs along with him. That's a gigantic contradiction right there.

Dude literally confessed at the beginning of the article that it was all made up and, at least that particular detail, is extremely funny to me.

  5. You know those days when you leave the house at 5 am and don't get back until 7:30 pm? If that time was spent at a library, on a hike, or doing things that generally don't involve huge crowds of people, it'd probably be fine. Going from overcrowded classrooms to overcrowded orchestra rooms to overcrowded assembly halls is draining, though. Is there a way for me to just not do this anymore? There's a point where I just want to wash my hands and walk away.

In other words, these little blue fairy penguins say hi. (they may or may not be plotting to eat you)

Next free day you have you should spend it in your room. Just reading or any other relaxing thing. Draining days are draining but recharging is the best feeling ever.

  6. Today the time was supposed to change (because daylight savings and stuff). Except a law was just approved so that we don't do that anymore. Except the official site my phone gets the time from apparently wasn't informed, so it changed itself anyway.

To fix this I had to change my timezone to the one we're supposed to be synchronized with. But since my phone detects that my location and timezone are different, now two different times appear on my lock screen.

    It's been a confusing day.

    1. Eluvianii

In Mexico at least. It was pretty impopular ever since I can remember and it was apparently proven that we were barely saving anything at all. It was little more than a way to mess up people's sleep schedule twice a year so it was chopped.

  7. 500th post SU!

To celebrate, I shall be doing book/book character vibe-checks. Reply and I'll do my best to match you with a book, fictional character, or both! (and they might be books or characters I do not know well, but whose vibes fit you well.)

  8. I went out today with a friend, and we're not exactly known to empty our pockets on a meal or anything, but I still took some money with me. The plan was not to spend much, if any, but just in case if emergency or something.

So anyway, here's my new copy of Les Misérables.

It is! I feel like publishers might be trying to get people to read more classics. They usually have much more drab covers, with like just a picture of the author in sepia tones and such. These new covers I'm seeing recently are so colorful and pretty.

  10. Happy early Birthday Eluvianii!

Here's a trick I found out. If you place a sleep toad and then a blast toad right after it and next to a sleeping monster, it will blast the monster with the 2x slap wake up and then put it back to sleep.

  13. Hello everyone! Sorry for the absence (and thank you to anyone who noticed.) We're moving to another city, so the last week has been hectic. I'll probably be less active for the next few weeks.

Also, did anything important happen? I've got 82 notifications

  14. Aparently C++ isn't that hard to learn at all.

    1. Eluvianii

      Eluvianii

Yeah see, the syntax is easy to learn as it's just a few different words for each language. But then they all have their own quirks in terms of memory usage, libraries, etc. And from what I hear C++ is the king in that regard. It gets complex by the sheer amount of options it gives you. Though that also means it's really efficient.

Not that I've stepped into that dark realm.

  17. Something really weird happened today…

I was talking to someone about Sanderson, and this person started telling me about an amazing fan site called 17thshard. I decided to just sit back and listen. Then they started telling me about some amazing theories they had read… some of which sounded really familiar to me. Then they started talking about how there was a meme page.

THEY SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED SOMEONE NAMED CHINKOLN.

They literally talked about memes that an otter named Chinkoln had made.

So I guess I have a fan base now

Does anyone else here play an instrument? I play the cello and ukulele and it's super awesome, but funnily enough i've only actually been nervous before online performances where you submit a recorded video before the recital and they play it, never in person ones. It's one of my super powers :P
