She could have been in the middle, at the far edge, or near the very start, and she would have seen no difference. But she could hear more shouting as pieces raged in battle. From the distant space to her right, she could still hear the fervent shouting of whatever the piece to her right was. Except now he was shouting about… time travel? “They’ve sent enemy forces to parley with Time himself! They hope to assassinate our King retroactively with the greatest of their warriors.” Alice didn’t know pieces could time travel. Where could she get such power? Or, did she really want such power? Surely, it would be kinder to whatever force controlled causality to leave it be. Surely. “Excuse me!” she yelled towards her right. “You are not excused!” the piece yelled back. “You have a duty to your Kingdom to fight and die in glorious battle! No deserting!” “That’s not what I… Never mind, I was just wondering about the time travel?” “Ah yes, a strange and wondrous ability! Fear not, we’ve sent our own forces to negotiate with Time. Soon, we will be immune to the atemporal attacks of our foes and have an atemporal force of our own. We will call them… The Travelling Extratemporal Attacking Party!” Alice frowned. “Won’t that be quite confusing?” “Life is confusing! Better to be alive than to be retroactively dead twenty years ago! Who cares how many alternate timelines die in your place?” Alice didn’t really agree, per se, but she couldn’t find a good way to argue against it. Perhaps if she had been one of the entities in charge of carving Fate into being, she would have had something more to say about it. As it was, she peered through the fog and took one step forward.
