  1. In Oathbringer, Navani has a POV scene during the alliance meeting where she keeps repeating the same mantra to herself: "Bring Order from the Chaos" This sounds suspiciously like a Radiant Ideal to me. My first thought was that it sounded like exactly the sort of 2nd Ideal that I would expect Elsecallers to speak, it sounds right up the thematic alley of the Inkspren. On the other hand, I really want Navani to be the Nightmother's Bondsmith, and I fully expect their Ideals to be more unique than average since their three Spren are all very unique. All that to say that while Im very biased, I could still get behind the idea that "I will unite instead of divide. I will bring men together." is the Honor-skewed version, but that the you could express the same abstract with "Bring Order from the Chaos" from a more Cultivating perspective. Thoughts?

  4. Wait, is the Navani-as-Bondsmith theory having her bond the Sibling, or the Nightwatcher? I guess it does make sense that it'd be the sleeping Silbing, being as Navani is a fabrialist (fabriatrician? Fabriafabricant?) currently living in Urithiru. But then, who's going to bond the Nightwatcher? For is it not written, Three shall be the number of Bondsmiths; and the number of Bondsmiths shall be three: four shall there not be, nor either two, unless we then proceed directly to three?

  6. Callor stepped out of the thick woods ringing Fal Dara, his white cloak with the golden sun making a splash against the darkly covered thicket that previously enveloped him. He felt vaguely uncomfortable standing there exposed, in the open between two nexuses of evil. The whitewashed tower, with its shiny exterior that fooled most, but was still full of rot within, was closer than the Dark One’s prison. However, Shayol Ghul seemed to emanate his madness. By means of the Blight spreading surely and slowly over the Blasted Lands and encroaching on the northern kingdoms, the Dark One advanced, and a strong hand was needed to intervene that did not belong to Tar Valon witches. And Callor knew whose hand that would have to be. Smiling at his orders from the Lord Captain Commander, he took to the road fully, prepared for his presence to be announced to the Keep he neared. Let them! Agelmar would be as wet clay in his hands when he saw what the Children could do. A few minutes of warning would change nothing. The Light would shine on and protect those who resisted the Dark One at all times. And Pedron Niall stood for the Light. The guardsman on the walls of Fal Dara Keep blinked. A party had appeared, essentially out of nowhere, on a stretch of clear road empty a second earlier. He frowned, motioning his fellows to hold the gates against the newcomers. Peering closer, he was unsurprised to see an Aes Sedai and a Warder among their number, even if the man looked familiar. The guardsman tried to place him, but the name was slippery on his tongue, and he could not grasp it. Those thoughts were driven from his head by the Aes Sedai, who serenely reached into one of her pouches and showed Agelmar’s sigil, a token of entry. Having little other choice, he let the Warder and his Aes Sedai in, glancing at the others as they passed. Mostly youth, though seemingly an Ogier among them, and an older gleeman. He did not know for what purpose they were there, but the woman had flashed Agelmar’s sign, and as such was to be allowed entry. Curious about the new arrivals, but unable to abandon duty, the guardsman contented himself with watching the north road, and the Blight as it crept slowly closer. Pain. Pain was all Aginor felt, from head to toe. A constant reminder of his failure. A constant reminder that his recklessness had trapped him at the surface of the Wheel for three millennia, while eras came and went. The pain stayed with him for all those millennia, and it did not vanish with his release. Yet despite this pain, Aginor was determined to see that his body would have advantages. He straightened, shrivelled skin screaming in protest from the treatment, and looked towards the Spine of the World. His eyes, at least, were sharp enough to see the mountain range clearly, even as far away as they were, and the dark shapes in that direction coming towards him. Squinting, he made a pretense of studying the mountain ranges. Maybe its formations would be the key to finding what he searched for. Somewhere in there lay the Eye. He just needed to come upon it. Aginor chuckled aloud, loud enough for Balthamel, similarly shrivelled, to raise an inquisitive eyebrow. She did not see what he did. Looking directly at him, moving in his direction with purpose, the shadows materialised: a small contingent of Darkfriends came before him, kneeling. Then Aginor truly smiled. It’s been a month-long drought (or should I say Blight ), but welcome to MR32: The Blight Encroaches! This game, if you didn’t catch it from the RP, is a Wheel of Time game set at the end of The Eye of the World. The Forsaken are trying to destroy, overwhelm, or use the Eye to cut off the fledgling Dragon, al’Thor, from using it against the Great Lord of the Dark. Meanwhile, the Light is frantically defending the Eye against the encroachments of both the Blight and Forsaken, and seek to drive them back and kill them to strike a major blow on behalf of the Light. This game will start at Fal Dara Keep and move back towards the Eye as it continues. My co-GM for this game will be Elandera (@Ookla the Rogue). Our Impartial Moderator is @Alvron. All of the rules for this MR may be found here, in this Google doc. If anyone has any rules questions (and I imagine they do), please do not hesitate to ask. I’ll be saving the first post for a player list and rule clarifications. It is worth noting that the rules are not technically set in stone, as the game balance committee might want me to make tweaks, so until they pass the game, consider this ruleset unfinished. That said, I will try to keep all of you updated on the status of the ruleset until it is confirmed. Actually, I lied about that doc having all the rules. I did not address one set of rules: those pertaining to Ooklas. I am aware that the Ooklas are a wonderful festive way to celebrate Sanderson (having assumed the role of one myself), but they can cause issues regarding identity in SE. I’d hate to have mere confusion about names and identities derail lynch discussion or confuse action orders, and as such am placing the following guidelines for Ookla users: 1. If you changed your name to an Ookla, please place your usual name within your title. 2. If you changed both your name and profile picture, please conclude all your posts with a boldfaced line that states your regular name. Players that only changed their name are not required to do this but are strongly encouraged to, to help out your GMs. (You always have our best interests at heart, right? ) 3. Once the game has begun, do not change your name or profile picture any longer. 4. When voting to lynch on an Ookla, cast your vote in the following format: Regular Name (Ookla Name). For instance: “I vote Fifth Scholar (Ookla the White-Cloaked) for imposing pointless Ookla restrictions.” Also, it might help a lot of people could just generally refer to others by their usual names. 5. Please just call me Fifth. My Ookla name is just for RP. Thank you for cooperating with all of the above, and I’m confident that if everyone tries to adhere to it, we shouldn’t have identity-confusion issues. Signups for this game will close Thursday 6 December 2018, at 10:00 PM EST. (Rollovers in general will be around 10 PM EST.) The countdown site is broken, so do math if you need an exact number. 7. Some guy wandered into the shop, mumbling and then contradicting himself all over the place. He didn’t even wait for his order, which was, like, totally stupid. One does not waste donuts. Kokichi leaned back into their seat as he approached their table, the picture of relaxed elegance— oh, who were they kidding, they looked like a brightly colored hyperactive small bird that’d had an accident at the crayon factory. The stranger stuck out his hand. He was probably important for some reason or another, so Kokichi grabbed it and energetically shook him up and down. "Hey, noticed your, ah, aura. Pretty cool.” They nodded, giving him a thumbs up with their free hand. "I'm-Nate-please-don't-kill-any-innocents-right-now." “Hi Nate-Please-Don’t-Kill-Any-Innocents-Right-Now, I’m Kokichi. This is my super bestie foreva, Lee, and these two are Jade and Nathan. We’ve been awkwardly trying to interrogate each other without admitting that’s what we’re doing for a bit now!” They struck a cocky yet cute pose, charming but deniable if Nate-Please-Don’t-Kill-Any-Innocents-Right-Now was a straight faced bloke without a sense of humor.

  9. (For those who don't know the setting, Fal Dara is in the Borderlands, and is a tough, heavy militarised zone, since it often has to fend off invasions from the Great Blight further north. Don't know if that will help people with character stuff at all. As for my character... Well...) Erm. OK. Hi. I'm Jandren Elnor Riatin, but you can call me Jancey. I'm kind of new here. My father signed me up here - he said a bit of 'military experience' would do me good. He says it's important for some kind of game - he tried to explain it to me, but I never really got it. I'm not... you know, actually expected to use a sword, am I? I... uhhh... kind of don't really like swords all that much. Or bows. Or anything that draws blood, really. You see, I, ummm... I kind of really don't like blood. Or fighting. But especially blood. It's just because when I see blood, I kind of get this strange feeling in my head, like a swarm of bees, and all of the colours in front of my eyes begin to fade out, and I hear this ringing and then I'm on the ground and people are around me asking what happened and I have this sick feeling in my stomach. I'm sure I can still be helpful, though! I can play a little music, though, if you like that. I have a lute. I mean, yeah, three of its strings are broken, and I can only really play two songs, but that's still something, right? OK. I've been saying since I started playing SE more (so, about 2 and a half years ago now) that I should RP more. I groan and mumble about it to myself, and then I ignore that advice the next game, and go back to doing things the regular way. As such, this game, I'm going to do something different. Every single post I make this game, I will be talking in character, for the entirety of the post, until the game is over. That's going to be doubly interesting with Jancey's style of tone, I think - still, that ought to make it all the more entertaining, if nothing else.

  10. Admittedly I'm not a fan of the Wheel of Time. I've tried getting through Jordan's books so I could reach that sweet, sweet Sanderson, only for my motivation to peter out somewhere in the middle (The Path of Daggers, if my memory serves me right). That said, I enjoyed the last WoT game I played a lot, and I've been itching to get back to see how everyone is doing, old friends and new players alike. Though the rules appear to be very different, I'm confident Fifth has designed something great and will run it well. Thus without me reading into this game too deeply, I have decided to throw my name into the ring. Or, rather, Nikel Fain's. Just before the break of dawn a man named Nik breached the southern edge of the woods that circled Fal Dara. His was a long journey - one that transcended two decades and a dozen countries’ borders - that until now was more akin to a wild goose chase than a quest for vengeance. Nonetheless he could sense that, one way or another, it would soon come to an end, and a horrific one at that. He knew it by the eager ache that lingered in the marrow of his bones; by the strange intermingling of hatred, fear and relief that flared with every thundering beat of his heart. Corenne al’Daishar, he thought in the Old Tongue, remembering the last words of the Darkfriend he ran down and tortured near Drell's Crossing. In another life perhaps Nik would have regretted the atrocities he was forced to inflict upon that cursed Kandori, but in this particular life, his heart was long hollowed out by his cold, undying anger. Even thinking of the Darkfriend as the Kandori rather than the name he sobbed while Nik flayed each and every inch of his flesh - along with the names of the Darkfriend's wife and seven kids for whom he swore allegiance to Shai’tan to protect - had no ill effect on his spirit. Just as he no longer cared to count how many men and women (and sometimes even children) he had to kill to get to this moment, he no longer bothered to remember, let alone learn, the names of his victims. Only one name mattered to him. Would ever matter to him. In the distance Nik made out the faint outline of Fal Dara's Keep, no more than a few hour’s worth of walking. There he would find the man who his hands yearned to choke the life from. Who his nails craved to rip and tear into, whose blood his knives thirsted for, whose limbs they lusted to dismember, whose face they dreamed to disfigure. According to the Kandori he would not be alone, either. An entire cell of Darkfriends would be gathering there, to fulfill some nefarious plot for the Dark One. If it came down to it Nik would not hesitate to decimate the lot of them, to burn down the entire city if it was required, in order to get to that man. “Padan Fain,” Nik hissed the name, venom dripping off every syllable, as if speaking it aloud might allow his father to hear it despite the league's between them. “Can you feel it, father!?” he yelled as loud as his rage, and lungs, would allow, though no one was around to hear it. “A bloody battle is brewing, and I promise you- no, promise Sightblinder Himself, that you will not escape it unscathed...” Somewhat cheated since I just edited old RP from LG22, but I think it's still relevant. Nikel Fain is here to find and kill his father. Whoever ends up being Padan, prepare yourself. I'm coming for you.

  11. Nathan wasn't sure what to make of Nate. He was dressed normally enough, and looked normal enough, but most people didn't walk around narrating their own thoughts. Most people didn't order four hundred thousand chocolate-chocolate donuts, either, though it wasn't difficult to picture Jade doing that. Of course, in all his time among Epics, vanillas, and everyone in between, Nathan had never met anyone who'd adopted the moniker Please-Don't-Kill-Any-Innocents-Right-Now. Not that it was a bad addition to a name, especially in a city full of Epics inclined to ignore that request; it just wasn't one he'd ever heard before. Kokichi grabbed his hand and shook it with enough enthusiasm to catch anyone off-guard. “Hi Nate-Please-Don’t-Kill-Any-Innocents-Right-Now, I’m Kokichi. This is my super bestie foreva, Lee, and these two are Jade and Nathan. We’ve been awkwardly trying to interrogate each other without admitting that’s what we’re doing for a bit now!” Jade's forehead hit the table as she let out a small but audible groan, and Nathan couldn't have argued if he'd wanted to. "We've told you we're not Canadian," he said with only a hint of the irritation he felt. "I'm not sure what more you want."

  18. Lee looked the newcomer up and down. Nate, huh, he thought. He couldn’t tell if Nate’s stammer was simply awkwardness or out of terror. The “please-don’t-kill-any-innocents-right-now” suggested the later. “We’ve told you we’re not Canadian,” Nathan said, attempting to center the conversation again. “I’m not sure what more you want.” Beside him, Jade knocked her forehead on the tabletop. Liam could empathize. He glanced around at the assembled group once more then sighed. “Well, if we’re being frank, I don’t entirely know what I want.” A thought crossed his mind. “Actually, there might be one thing. If you happen to possess some indispensable skills and have your evening free, I could use your assistance.” Liam nodded at Nate. “You too, since you’re here.” It was a bit too late now to get anything more out of the couple, so it was time to be blunt. Euphemistically.

  23. I've got this page of "Things you may have missed" in reading Stormlight. It's basically a list of interesting things in each book that are easy to miss/overlook/misunderstand or that weren't revealed clearly in the books alone. The Oathbringer page needs an update, and I could use some help thinking of things that need to be included. Anything come to mind that you think definitely needs to be in there? Note: This does not include connections to other cosmere books. I've got a list of those elsewhere. I'm specifically focusing on Stormlight Archive stuff here. Current list: Dalinar's memories of Evi were taken by Cultivation herself--not by the Nightwatcher. Dalinar summoned Honor's Perpendicularity in chapter 119. Odium confirms (Chapter 122) that Dalinar Ascended in this moment. It is not entirely clear what is implied when Dalinar declared, "I am Unity," or what Odium meant when he said, "WE killed you." Jasnah obtained pictures of the Heralds from Wit, during their time together between the WoR Epilogue and her arrival in Oathbringer. ("I have drawings of their true faces, provided by an unexpected source." Chapter 53 and "Why has Midius been giving away pictures of us?" Chapter 121) Lopin seems to be chasing his spren, Rua, at the end of Chapter 55. This is possibly their first meeting. Humans originally came to Roshar from Ashyn. (WoB) The Cryptic that Wit picks up in the Epilogue was the one who was going to bond Elhokar. (WoB) Urithiru is not a spaceship. [WoB]

  24. I am a primary school teacher (kindy to yr 6) and I have just been informed that I will be taking over as the Opportunity Class (Years 5 & 6) as of 2019. These are the academically gifted students. After discussions with this year's teacher, he informed me that these students thrive on quality literature and he usually uses The Hobbit and LOTR with them. I was thinking of introducing some Sanderson to them. I wondered if there were any other teachers in the 17th Shard and if you have any ideas for teaching lessons from a particular Sanderson novel. Being primary education, it can be any subject. Thanks

  25. I've done some hunting but there's something about the Thrill I don't understand. We know that the Thrill isn't genetic but instead has to do with the location of Nergaoul. That's probably recursive; Alethela was designated to train soldiers, so Nergaoul got to do his thing, so the Alethi liked to fight more. I understand Kaladin is immune to the thrill: but I'm not clear on why. His immunity seems to extend to his squires, none of whom display the affects of the Thrill so far as we can tell. Seems to me that if you were to ask Kaladin "do you feel the Thrill?" he'd be like "what?" Is it a function of Windrunning? Being Radiant doesn't seem to be mutually exclusive from feeling the Thrill and frankly I don't know why it would be. The Unmade's aura effects seem to behave differently (Ashertmarn's temptation is highly localized and intense, Moelach's deathrattles are widespread but inconsistent, and Re-Shephir's presence could be felt by some but not by others). Also, despite the Nergaoul taking over Sadeas' army, Adolin doesn't seem to feel the Thrill at all at Theylan Field, despite having admitted in WoK that he does feel it. He misses like the first half of the battle, sure, but doesn't feel it or seem to notice that its missing. I could keep rambling about weirdness that I keep noticing about the Thrill (Szeth, for example, also doesn't seem to feel it) but the bottom line is there seems to be something I'm missing regarding how it works and who feels it and who doesn't. Also, yes this is my first post. Been lurking for a while though.

  26. Wiping a stream of sweat from her forehead, Lexi leaned against the wall of a long-abandoned bookstore. The thin trails of dust tickling her throat as she took a deep, steadying breath. Well, I think that's the last of them gone. She'd managed to escape the last of the gang that was pursuing her, losing them in a momentary blackout that seemed to block out the sun. She'd almost broked her neck trying to run without being able to see, but she'd been on enough supply runs in the dead of night that she was somewhat accustomed to navigating by touch. She was about to start taking a roundabout route home, not wanting to risk any more people with guns chasing her, when she realized where she was. "Destination Doughnuts?" She muttured, looking at the storefront. Well they seem to have quite a few customers today. Guess they could stand to lose a couple. She scouted out a few nearby back alleys, pulling a small sack out of one of her bags she managed to fund a few of what she was looking for. Their dirty grey bodies twisted in her grip as she tried to place them in the bag without being bitten. After collecting a half dozen, she walked around the back of the doughnut store, using a nearby trash can she got enough of a vertical jump to pull herself over the roof as silently as she could manage. She shimmied carefully towards an open window, and slowly opened it, revealing a checkered tiled floor that was in need of a mopping and a urinal. Men's bathroom? That'll do. She dropped the sack in through the window, loosening the opening enough that they could get out, before throwing herself off the roof and into a roll, darting around a corner to see what happened. She gave it a minute or two before the rats made their way out into the main restaurant.

Themes like Harry Potter, superheroes, and My Little Pony, along with classics like focusing on a color or candy canes. Hence, I've been thinking about a Cosmere or Sanderson themed Christmas tree. What would HAVE to go on this tree? Initial thoughts: -Metal vials -Ornaments of the glyphs for the orders of knights radiants -Feruchemical metalminds

If you happen to possess some indispensable skills and have your evening free, I could use your assistance.” Liam nodded at Nate and added “you too, since you’re here.” Nate did have some skills that, once known, could be considered indispensable. He had run point in all of the Survivors' Epic-killing missions and acted as ambassador in negotiations with the Epics they didn't kill, even before gaining his powers. But... Those last were the problem. "... Can't let that happen," his muttered musings concluded. "Well, I do have some very useful skills, but... I might jeopardize the... Whatever-it-is you intend to do. Oh. And 'Please-Don't-Kill-Any-Innocents-Right-Now' isn't part of my name, I just nervous around other Epics." Nate wasn't really a master of face-reading, but even he realized he had said too much. "... What... Did I say?"

The happiness could set the tone of the next Era, which would have Villains to break the status quo. Just an interesting thematic choice I was wondering about.

  42. In this post I am going to argue that the Ardents are Odium worshippers. Hear me out, it makes more sense than you would believe. It is obvious that Vornism started out as a genuine belief in Honor a few thousand years ago. But nowadays? What kind of ethics would a genuine belief in Honor entail? It would mean journey before destination: it is more important how you fight/live then what you fight/live for. It is not even important that you win in a fight (or in life). Everything that matters is the journey. Now, what the Vorin church teaches is the exact opposite of what a genuine belief in Honor would look like. They don`t even have any set of ethics, actually. It is only important that you do your job as a soldier/ farmer etc. well. It is only important that you win. Subsequently, Alethi culture is all about the game, the victory, the Thrill. This set of ethics is, well, of Odium. I would argue, therefore, that it does not matter that they pay lip service to the Heralds and that their faith started out as worshipping Honor. The Ardents of our time are Odium worshippers. The best example are the “Sons of Honor”. They claim to want to restore Honor. Yet, they only want to possess the power associated with a god and restore the power of the Vorin church. They don`t care about Honor. It is not surprising that the only known son of Honor, Amaram, ends up on Odium`s side. The Ardents will soon join their actual god and lord, almighty Odium, led by Restares, who is probably someone high up in the hierarchy of the church.

  44. Im not a real teacher, but we did discuss something similar recently. @Beaker has apparently used Emperors Soul for "not especially academic 11th graders" successfully. As far as general lessons that you could work with the novels, Emperors Soul has some interesting What-If discussion possibilities. All the settings of Stormlight are amazingly interesting, with the coral-like plants, giant crustaceans, etc. And there are some wonderful resources floating around here that work out the mathematics of things like why the Greatshells are physically impossible even on a planet with lower gravity than earth (you could basically use it to disprove Godzilla ) . I personally enjoy the glyph writing system, and how they use them both as symbolic logo-graphics and also to approximate phonetic spellings. Not sure how well the stormlight novels themselves would translate to primary schoolers though. Reckoners would probably be a really good choice, especially for the age-group. It is a bit more comic books than LOTR fantasy but it is classically awesome Sanderson that is also written for a slightly younger audience. It's basically a What-If scenario where people start getting superpowers (x-men style), but more realistic in the sense that society collapses entirely in the face of a bunch of demigods that the Authorities are entirely unequipped to deal with. For Reasons there arent much in the way of Superheroes stepping up to Defend the Innocent, so the villains sort of carve everything up into territorial City-states. Given the current pop-culture obsession with Superheroes, this is one that offers a huge amount of thought-provoking perspective that you usually dont get in that genre, since it basically starts with the idea that the "Good Guys" arent going to always Win when they try to save the world.
