Increasing The Strength Of Your Breaths
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Trusk'our's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I wonder about the base question though. What would mixing Investiture of different Intents look like for Shards who are not invested in the Roshar system? I know Vasher can power his need for investiture with Stormlight, but he can't Awaken with it. I have kind of assumed that the mixing Navani does is because those Shards are invested in the Roshar system overall. Breaths don't require any Connection, but I wonder if there is a way to take unkeyed Investiture to Awaken in some way? Man it would certainly make research so much easier for Awakening if you could unkey Stormlight and fuel your research with it instead of Breaths- 2 replies

He worked with Skaze in the 10th-anniversary edition scene! You're positing the burning of Roshar as the trolly problem, so... there are differing answers to that question depending on your moral philosophy. Hoid certainly takes a Utilitarian approach to issues, but that doesn't make his choices "good" per se. Taravangian made similar Utilitarian choices and most people see him as a Villain. He also worked with the protagonists of the SA to a point while doing what he thought he needs/ed to do to save the most people possible. Hoid's relationships are not all cordial with protagonists. He is openly hostile with Kelsier, and Vin wouldn't meet him in WoA. Other Cosmere groups and Shards are openly hunting him or hostile to him. One of the Shards that we mostly attribute positive goals/attributes, Endowment/Edgli, openly dislikes him. He abandoned Sigzil to the bridge crews... etc. etc. If we judge people based on the damage wrought through, or lack thereof, in their relationships, there are very few Cosmere-wide that we see where he leaves them better than he found them. Shallan is a (the most) notable exception. But I think in her, he sees something of himself as a young lightweaver in training, and that colors his interactions/responses to her. His cheering of Kaladin I've always seen as self-serving because Odium wanted Kaladin, therefore Hoid opposed it the best ways he knew how. I don't think he's capital E, evil at all, but I've never assumed or read him as a "good guy". An anti-hero is the best way to describe him, but only in the sense that he is a protagonist of the overall Cosmere arc rather than an antagonist. There are many Cosmere-wide who see him as a villain. It's only our glances into his alliances or contacts with our beloved protagonists that we think positive thoughts of him at all IMO.

Is the Shaod a mechanical device?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to EmeraldPaladin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Until he reveals concretely otherwise, I've always assumed the Shaod to be a magical algorithm of sorts. It looks at some set of inputs "levels of Connection to Devotion + Connection to the Geopolitical area of Arelon" So in a way it'd be a "magical construction" as the original quote talked about, but I've never thought of it as a physical device or anything This is reinforced to me how he describes his conception of Sel'ish magics as programming languages: -
Does Anyone Ship Jasnahoid (Jasnah & Wit)?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to SymphonianBookworm's topic in Stormlight Archive
I like it even though I think it's doomed. I said in another thread on this that I like it because it gives both of them someone on par with the other intellectually to engage with. That alone is stimulating in many respects and would be refreshing for Jasnah/Hoid after "all this time" relatively for each. I do think it's doomed. I don't think we're supposed to think it will last either as others have said. -
Opinions on Jasnahoid?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Wandering Shade's topic in Stormlight Archive
I like it personally as I think it's nice for Hoid and Jasnah to have a partner I do think that they will break it off eventually because of their overall conflicting goals related to Roshar, but it's nice to give her someone who doesn't feel threatened by her, is on her level, and can stand toe-to-toe with her intellectually as well as magically, and also gives a lot of outlets of information passage about the Cosmere -

Where are missing Shardblades?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to alder24's topic in Stormlight Archive
I've long thought there is a huge cache of them in Shinovar with the Honor Blades I can't wait to see how they play into the final confrontations in SA5 and beyond -
#6th book ever signed?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Hopefinder's topic in General Brandon Discussion
honestly, when you first started talking I thought it was more than that. I would have even considered $1500 for a legit #6 Sanderson signed copy great find! I'm happy for you and your library! so glad that Dragonsteel and Peter have given you peace of mind! -
Odd detail in the Eila Stele
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Kvothe the Bloodless's topic in Stormlight Archive
This was my first association when I read RoW back to the Eila Stele's text When Venli talks to the stones and they remember and have long memories. Plus remember that the Singers were present on Roshar before Honor/Cultivation ever arrived, so I think animism is 100% what they were doing before the Shard's various arrivals and usurpation of their worship -

[Discusion] Row spoilers
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to The Wandering Wizard's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is possibly tangential to the discussion, but I'm wondering if Dalinar or another Bondsmith got to the Cognitive near Sel and opened a Perpendicularity, would that help the power pass back to the Spiritual Realm rather than being trapped in the Cognitive? -
#6th book ever signed?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Hopefinder's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I'm always skeevy about 3rd party sellers of "rare items" with no traced provenance myself. It does look like his writing, but ... again I'd be wary personally. dunno, sometimes team Sanderson trolls the boards so one of them might pop in to give you more peace of mind or whatnot, but I wouldn't spend a lot on it myself. I've also been told I have trust issues -

Does Division work on humans?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to AidenTollis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Breaking bonds is endothermic, so colder, not hotter. Though I guess in a fire situation once you add the energy to start the combustion of the fuel, the fire itself provides the energy for further combustion. So with Division, you provide the initial energy through investiture and it can start a form of combustion...? Either way, using it on living beings is going to be savage. I'm picturing the old Firestarter movie- 17 replies

Navani and Zahel [Navani levels up theory]
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to ReinyxGrey's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, you and I agree fundamentally on Endowment's future though I haven't responded to your last post in that thread yet. So, I have to disagree that Endowment is coming to Roshar. Theoretically, Vasher did not return in order to heal someone. He might have another purpose in his Return. That doesn't preclude him from healing someone as well though. -
Navani and Zahel [Navani levels up theory]
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to ReinyxGrey's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So, while I agree that he's an Easter Egg in a way... at the same time he's critical to the Stormlight Archive. He trained Adolin in the sword and taught him to care for his blade, both of which have had huge consequences for the plot. He brought Nightblood to Roshar, which... has had huge consequences for the plot. He helped train Renarin to a degree and has advised and trained Kaladin at key moments that are plot-critical. He won't be a "main character", but he is critical to the entire Stormlight Archive. Also - Brandon specifically wrote/wanted to get Vasher's and Nightblood's story out there with Warbreaker so we know WHO they were/are, before we met them in the SA. That isn't a coincidence, it's the plan. I think he has a core part to play in SA5 even if he's not going to be POV/main-character, and I'm betting that it will be a culmination of his story and the full culmination of his initial Returned name, Warbreaker the Peaceful. Some way he's going to redeem something that goes horribly awry in SA5 with his breath. That's what I'm banking on anyway... EDIT: there is also this WoB from the RoW release party I just found: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/448-row-release-party/#e14425 -
I agree that something is up with Cusicesh and in the end, it will have to do with BAM in some way. Not sure I agree about the "dull-form" idea since there isn't anything like that for the Thrill when it gets trapped by Dalinar. But, there is something there. I was theorizing this morning myself that perhaps the gem that BAM is trapped inside is at the bottom of that bay and the connections that were severed when she was trapped have come together here and melded together. We know whatever was done created a "wound", so I'm thinking that the Radiant spren's cognitive aspects as well as the cognitive parts of the Parshendi who were connected to BAM when she was trapped are all drawn here like a gravity well of cognitive Connections. Or something. I think it will be key in SA5... Can't wait.

Endowment on Ashyn (Back Half)
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to KaladinWorldsinger's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's some Sauron thinking there. I don't think the Shard's think like that. Especially one that has held their Shard since the beginning. Endowment's Intent has likely overtaken Edgli, so her goals will be Endowing, improving, empowering. None of those things deal with Nightblood or what Nightblood does or can do which is now they opposite of her thing. You may in the end be proved right, it just doesn't feel like something that makes sense to me. -
Shard blades are about to become scarier. (SP #4)
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Rg2045's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I assume BAM's release will be responsible for spren no longer being Dead Eye period, broken oaths or not. And it seems that Sigzil's Oaths aren't quite as broken in that preview as he and his spren seem to think based on his ability to call Aux as a blade
