@Bliev I don't see a distinction between what Cultivation does or what any other Shard is doing. shes not special in this. all the Shards are planning ahead. its a stretch to call it cultivating. what Ruin and Perservation did to Vin, Harmony did to Wax or what Odium did to Dalinar (even though it failed) is the same. growth is something inherent to all beings in the cosmere. we know this now. its one of the fundamental laws. its not Cultivation-induced. shes playing the same game as any other Shard is.

Leechers would be more efficient I'd say. I was convinced that Mistborn would win because of this and I still am, but its becoming increasingly hard to convince myself... Radiants are downright broken. especially the Shardblades. they are way too powerful, lethal and versatile.

I don't think this is relevant. we know of no restriction to the Nightwatchers boons and curses. alternating "capacity" is also not something one can attribute to growth or cultivating. same goes for forgetting memory. for that one could make a case that Dalinar grew. its still more of a sideeffect than directly because of the boon/curse. there is nothing special about Cultivations manipulation of Dalinar or anyone else. its the same thing as Preservation did. as Odium tried and so on. its what Shards do. they use their foresight for their plans. according to @Bliev quote what Lift asks is a complete wildcard. anything goes. its impossible to not be yourself. unless you want to argue semantics.

its easy to explain. the overarching story of the cosmere and the workings of the magic system are the most interesting part - to me. overall I like Brandons characters. the only series where I dislike major parts of the plot and characters is SA. the book 4 arcs were not good overall in my opinion. not compared to the previous books. Mistborn for example. I love the characters. I love the story. as a whole. the 2nd book was not good though. the rest? brilliant. I care about how the fabrials work. I care about how the magic works. I care about how the bond works. I care about how the magic can be twisted. what I don't care for is Kaladins constant inner struggle that doesn't seem to get anywhere. its tiresome. it was okay the first time, but constant back and forth is killing this. same goes for Shallan. for Shallan especially... when the "big" reveal came I thought to myself "this was it? this was storming it? glad I skimmed through her chapters then." don't get me wrong. Brandon is a great author. that doesn't mean one has to like everything he writes.

Zahel airs his dirty laundry. [discuss]
trav replied to CogitoErgoArclo's topic in Cosmere Discussion
there is a quote from a WOB in this thread. Nalthis magic feeds on any Investiture. I suppose he is able to suck it in like he would from previously awakened objects. my question rather is if he can store it like he could Breath.- 19 replies

What I don't like in this book is..... how predictable it was!
trav replied to Bloodless's topic in Stormlight Archive
as the OP outlined. its not about Kaladins aptitude or w/e. its also about the rest aligning so he succeeds. especially the Fused fighting him 1v1 was irritating to read. for me, it takes away the suspense. once I know a character will always make it (and yeah, I get that Kaladin ultimately will not fail. there can still be suspense) I lose interest in that character. it probably did not help that I never cared for Teft. that hit me like a wet noodle. thats on me though, obviously. -
taravangian development: is it a good or bad thing?
trav replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
@king of nowhere what makes me doubt that so much is Taravagnians thought about Dalinar and that he can beat him. he seems more excited about the prospect of winning and proving himself than seeing his claimed altruistic goals come true. I don't think Taravangnian was wrong. I actually think he was right. the problem is that, ableit for a short time, he is now holding Odium and is influenced by its intent. Ts moral code works for a true neutral. for someone who is really selfless. which he claimed that he was. trying to save as many as he could and ignoring the cost. the moment he picked up Odium he stopped being that imo. the scales were tipped in the wrong direction. that is exactly what has happened in the Mistborn series and it worked out good. -
taravangian development: is it a good or bad thing?
trav replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
that was my first thought to. it should. Sazed, afaik, is still a Feruchemist for example. wether thats a good thing or bad thing remains to be seen. smart day T is completely void of empathy. pair that with pure hatred... smart day T would be Odium on steroids. he knows this. so... kill Renarin. problem solved. Dalinar said that he can not know Taravagnians heart and therefor can not answer him. I suppose we now get to see his real heart and I doubt its going to be like he said it is. -
^ although I came to think of something. Atium could be ironpulled and steelpushed while Aluminium resists. so it behaves differently to a god metal in at least 1 way.
-
you are arguing semantics here. your definition of heavily invested may differ from mine. Vin could only push the invested metals away from TLR because she had access to strong Allomancy at that moment. given enough power (for example a 4th ideal Radiant) one can affect "heavily" invested items. I still highly doubt that Jasnah could affect TLRs metal minds like Vin did, for example. if Aluminium is a god metal it would be even more invested than TLRs metal minds. maybe its a bit naive as it fits way too well, idk. sounds almost too easy to figure out. especially with the WOB that describes another god metal works in the almost exact way, except that we don't yet have confirmation on the part that Aluminium can not be created by soulcasting.
-
Shardblades are god metal. so are the Honorblades. since Aluminium interacts with Shard and Honorblades like they were regular swords I always assume its another god metal. or the god metal. its impossible to be pulled or pushed with Allomancy. like heavily invested items. its also pretty odd that it can be allomantically burned while it resists every other form of investiture base actions. god metals can be burned. I doubt it can be created by soulcasting (by conventional means) if it resists getting soulcasted from. it would make aquisition of Aluminium way too easy. apparently this applies to other god metals aswell. it can not be created by soulcasting and it heavily resists getting soulcast from. additionally Adonalsium has the god metal name pattern. I'd be surprise if Aluminium did not turn out to be Adonals (-iums) god metal. or at least a Shards god metal.

sorry no. Moash is the most realistic character in the book. he never did anything wrong and fought the good fight when no one else would. a self sacrificing gleeming ray of hope for the ultimate good to prevail. 10/Moash would have switched sides too. not his fault the god of hatred is backing the legitimate owners of Roshar.

[RoW and Mistborn Secret History spoilers] What Hoid needs to do
trav replied to Ixthos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
@Seloun not something Hoid could consider. he knew Rayse. he doesn't know T. not like that. because he knew Rayse and Rayse would not have thought of that. or because he himself did not think of it. before it was 2 "guys" set in their ways facing off. now there is suddenly someone with a new perspective on things. I totally agree on the fortune part. hes going somewhere and then starts a play to pass his time until the real event happens. I disagree on coming prepared as it was said that he does not know why he needs to be somewhere. this one is brilliant. its not something specific to Odium. wether Rayse or T. its fall back honey pot memory for the eventuality that any Shard would sometimes attempt this. what I am saying is that he was not prepared for Odium specifically, but for any Shard. -
A very significant dead body [RoW spoilers]
trav replied to Mason Wheeler's topic in Stormlight Archive
this would be the most obvious thing. it was mentioned that there are ways to get information post mortem. in this case I doubt its possible since Nightblood was responsible for the death. -
I think thats part of her plan to. the situation right now gives Dalinar access to more power I would say, without the intent interfering. "His remnants, your soul, my will."
-
it was always my idea that SA is not Honor vs Odium, but Cultivation vs Odium. she is the one who set all the plans into motion and outwitted Odium. so far she has shown the best foresight in my opinion. maybe even so far as to replace Vessels. only for the Rosharan system though.
-
@Oltux72 pretty sure this will be the case. as it was with Mistborn Era 1 and 2. I have similar feeling about Navani and the Sibling. its one of the big gripes I have with the series. every Kholin is special and does something amazing. Adolin could have been the one ray of hope, but nah. hes about to do the impossible and give Maya a second life. Navani bonding the Sibling... ugh.
-
Shardblades can be sort of bonded too. is it even confirmed that Radiants would hear screams from blades they bonded?

Skybreakers can be a little valid, as a treat.
trav replied to Could Be Fire's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'll comment on this and leave it at that. Morality, by definition, is selective. moral can change on a daily basis. or even in a moments notice. one can consider it amoral to kill an innocent bystander and also consider it moral to kill someone who is trying to kill others. the Law on the other hand may forbid any for of killing. its more consistent and not subject to personal opinion. take religion. people convert from one religion to another and their moral code changes. sometimes drastically. moral is arbitrary. a good example is one of the death rattles. wether or not the person holding the child is able to kill it or not only depends on what he perceives as right. not what is really right. a Skybreaker who is following the Law can not make a personal choice here. the child is innocent, so it may not be killed. wether this is the best course of action or not. its consistent.- 48 replies

my problem with RoW Shallan is that its tiresome to read. I want a chapter about an established character and not reading about her 2 imaginary friends. Shallan hiding away inside is also very frustrating to read. Brandon tried something different with her, but for me it simply doesn't work. its not an appealing read and I catch myself skimming through her chapters. unfortunately.

What makes the sharp part of Shardblades cut souls, but not the blunt part?
trav replied to Tanavast_the_lesser's question in Cosmere Q&A
the problem with this is that Shardblades are not really getting past the skin. its left untouched. the blade just passes through. theres no actual cutting so the shape of the Shard should not matter, but it does. Shades are also able to pass through people. and Shades are "blunt" I would say. all I can think of is Intent. -

this is long after the events with Elhokar. its Kaladins way to make his actions agreeable with his morality. he is doing this so he does not have to outright admit to himself that he is not actually the good guy in this. and this is still only his perception. his personal moral dilemma. I meant it as his personal recreance. he would break his oaths. like he almost did. why is that frustrating? its exactly how anyone enforcing the law should act. everyones equal before it. a clear set of rules that no one can bend. which they shouldn't. feelings are not a good basis for judgement. especially strong and temporary ones. they are not completely immutable in this. thats what their ideals are about. its a process of learning. like you said, tested convictions. tried and true. that depends. if Kaladin finds out that Elhokars actions between the assassination attemp and his later demise lead to more suffering he may regret his choices. the Skybreakers are made up of people with their own moral code. there is still a human component in their order. they do not follow rules blindly. and the rules they follow are, like you said, tested time and time again. I like the idea of being consistent. that this is the biggest rule of the order. consistency. something Kaladin was lacking. put a Skybreaker in Kaladins stead for the Elhokar situation and Moash is dead at the first act of treason.- 48 replies

Contest of Champions Predictions [RoW Spoilers]

make the fight last forever -
one of the forces is infinite, can not be shielded against and only attracts. it pulls everything from everywhere together. making everything that ever existed one again. eventually. Gravity sound much like a force that unites.
