The Lord Ruler was so powerful.... so why wasn't he?
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Knight of Iron's topic in Mistborn
I think TLR himself was never really the real enemy of the book though. The enemy was the empire itself and the system it enforced. THAT was what Kelsier’s death was for - to free the Skaa from their society’s shackles. To give them a reason to rise up. Killing TLR was just the icing on the cake that was destroying the empire. And if you view the empire as the enemy, its power is quite evident. -
I mean, we do have Shallan. And we’ve been in Jasnah and Renarin’s heads, and we’ll get more of them in the back five. That’s what I meant, and you expressed it better than I could. The culture would be there, but not like ours is. I wonder if it wouldn’t be something like Lesbian and gay couples tag-teaming, so the women could act as scribes and the men as protectors? It would very much be based around the culture, which we don’t see nearly enough of.

I use her as a gender neutral pronoun to combat the usage of he as gender neutral, lol. I picked it up from Honor Harrington. I’ll fix it. I agree that it does impact, but I think the extent varies for people. I mean, absolutely no one thinks I’m anything but straight unless I tell them, and we haven’t really been in Drehy’s head to see how he feels. He’s also married, so he may not feel like looking at other men. And Roshar lacks the kind of subculture we have here, as LGBTQ+ is accepted, at least in the Vorin kingdoms. I don’t think Rlain should come off as anything but ace unless he’s in mateform. That’s just how Singers/Listeners are. They’re a different species. Renarin has read very gay to a lot of people though and Jasnah definitely read ace. And Shallan reads quite bi, so I definitely think there is some showing of variation, which is nice. I don’t think other people’s feelings are invalid; I’m trying to understand their experiences because mine are so different.

I... grew up in the Orthodox Jewish community. I didn’t even know homosexuality existed until my late teens. I think that’s part of what I don’t get; how could I grow up not even knowing what being gay was and still know and accept myself, while people who grow up in environments more open to LGBTQ+ struggle to acknowledge and accept themselves?

Exactly. That’s his experience. It isn’t mine, which I described. Comatose claimed that all queer people act in a particular manner and that the discovery of their sexuality alters behaviors and was unhappy with some character not expressing those traits. This is what I was disagreeing with. SOME queer people express specific behaviors that are associated with being queer. Others read completely straight. For SOME people the realization alters their self perception and behaviors greatly. For others it doesn’t. For some individuals their sexuality is the most important element of their self; for others it’s a minor consideration. I really don’t get how people ‘discover’ their sexuality. Don’t you just know? This constantly confuses me. How do you not know? And I mean this honestly; I just don’t get how you don’t know. Not knowing the label I get, but not recognizing what stimuli your body reacts to?

The Lord Ruler was so powerful.... so why wasn't he?
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Knight of Iron's topic in Mistborn
I have a sneaking suspicion that Brandon is saving the show for Era 3. -
I think Kell’s end goal is to see Scadrial go beyond surviving to thriving, by becoming the dominant force in the Cosmere. I think he does want Saze to take up at least one more Shard to allow Harmony more freedom of action. The rest he wants Shattered, so they can’t harm Scadrial. I don’t think either Hoid or Kell views the other as an enemy at present. Kelsier is intrigued by Hoid and Hoid sees Kell as an annoyance. This will likely change as they continue to interfere in the plans of the other.

Or that’s just your experience. My sexuality is not an important part of my identity at all and I’ve never understood all the fuss about it. Or why it’s so hard for people to figure out who their attracted to; isn’t it obvious? And no, I’m not straight. My faith, my family and my community are far more important to who I am. Realizing there was a label for it didn’t change anything about me at all. Why should it? And if you want to talk about rep: find me ONE homosexual/heteromantic or heterosexual/homoromantic character anywhere please. Apparently we’re either super rare or super ignored or both.

Dabbid has brain damage. The book was very clear on this. That is a TBI, not a mental disorder.

One of the important plot elements is that Rashek has grown complacent and lazy. If he was the kind of man who would act, then the characters would never have had a chance. I also suspect Brandon wants to keep the Fullborn going full out thing for Era 3. And I further suspect that Fullborn are so badly overpowered that they have to limit how much of their powers they use on a regular basis. -
I don’t see how a person being privileged has anything to do with not wanting to debate you... That’s a problem with the person, not their origins. And Elend is awesome.

Things Hoid is not allowed to do in the Cosmere
Kingsdaughter613 replied to jamesbondsmith's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Following up on 38: 39: Hoid is NEVER allowed to be within a mile of Kelsier (or vice versa) without a suitable intermediary. Only Sazed counts as suitable, as nothing short of a Shard can contain either of them, and Saze is the best of the Shards. Also the only one on Scadrial. 40: Related to the above, Hoid is not allowed to trick random people into unwittingly declaring war on Scadrial to mess with Kelsier. 41: Similarly, he may not trick random people into unwittingly declaring war on whatever group Warbreaker (under whatever name he is currently using) has joined. 42: Nor may he trick random people into causing trouble for Wan ShaiLu. 43: He is also not allowed to attend the ‘Hoid is an Asshole’ club annual gatherings, even if he agrees with the premise. (To start with Kelsier will be there, violating rule 39.) -
Takeaways from the livestream

He actually admitted this earlier, when he specifically asked that we NOT refer to Thaidakar by his real name, implying that we should know it. And then his team deleted every question asking ‘is Thaidakar Kelsier?’ -
Personally, I liked when they figured out how to disConnect Spren from Roshar and went off to Scadrial so Hoid could slap Thaidakar around again.

Badger1289 If Investiture can’t be moved beyond a certain point away from its world/solar system, how in the Cosmere did three Awakeners end up on Roshar? Brandon Sanderson Investiture from different systems acts in different ways. Certain people have managed, for example, to get some kinds of Investiture to leave their home world through the use of a kind of magical pipeline. Breaths attach to the identity of the individual, and are fully given away--freely, which removes some of this Connection. It's a nature of Endowment that the gift is given without strings attached, so to speak. But while it's a renewable resource, it's a difficult one. Roshar is extra "sticky" so to speak with Investiture. It's part of the nature of Honor, Cultivation, and oaths. So getting it off is a problem, though collecting it is not.

Was this ever in question? Although I wonder if Saze got an exception...

Worth noting that in-world his being gay is the one thing he isn’t going to be an outcast for. They don’t consider it ‘unusual’ there. Actually, Renarin/Rlain will receive more in-world flack for being a mixed species couple than anything else. Which may be the point: the thing that would come up most in our world isn’t even considered worthy of mention by the other characters.

That’s questionable, actually. Under some circumstances, sure. The GBs are trying to stay under the radar here though. Kell only made as much noise as he did in TFE because he was trying to instigate a house war and was trying to make a name for himself in preparation for his real plan. There’s no reason for that here. He knows how to kill quietly; he actually does more of that than out and out battles in Mistborn. There’s a reason no one blames him for the suspicious deaths around Luthadel. Kelsier is a guile hero first; yes, he can do the wholesale slaughter thing, but he’ll be an unseen knife in the dark more often. When we see Iyatil try to kill Amaram later she does so quietly. The GBs aren’t likely to do such a noisy killing; they’re far more likely to send someone into the war camps to slice Amaram’s throat in the dark. They don’t want people looking too closely into their deeds; having one of their members destroy a small army is an excellent way to ensure notice. It just doesn’t make much sense for them to do so. Also worth noting that Pattern did not recognize this statement as a lie. And that Kelsier doesn’t lie directly to his team. He lies by omission, but rarely directly. And Mraize doesn’t lie to Shallan directly either. I agree that Helaran was likely not a Skybreaker. But I don’t think Mraize was lying; I think he was mistaken.

Only if you consider Shallan to have died too. Neither Veil nor Shallan ‘survived’ that event as they were. Instead they integrated, becoming a new, different whole. Veil is only as dead as Shallan.
