The laughter stops abruptly, and voice speaks from the cloud of smoke and debris in the aftermath of the explosion. A voice that causes everyone present to freeze in horror. "I guess you don't understand." Subversion steps from the smoke, completely unharmed and glowing with pure Narrative power. Not mere borrowed power as before, but her own. "I must thank you, however. Without all of your so easily subverted expectations, I would never have been able to prove myself worthy."

Rym spun.

His eyes widened as he saw Subversion reappear.

"No..."

He snapped into focus, slamming forward at extreme speeds and aiming for Subversion's core with the tip of his sword.

Subversion easily dodged, and suddenly Rym could not move, the air around him becoming harder than steel. "I thank you for finishing that fool off, Rym. It would've taken far longer without your sword. He might have managed to break out of my illusion."

Rue stands up as well, trying to pretend she knew what was going on. She took a swig from her bottle of root and pulled out a sword, ready to fight once more.

Rym hovered there, frozen in his block of air.

What was it for...I'm not a warrior...

Neither am I, yet I seem to manage, a voice replied.

Rym perked up slightly.

No one blames you for acting without all of the information. Don't blame yourself.

Lets retreat, consider our options, then act again when we know everything.

Rym, mentally, agreed. Then he vanished.

Bookwyrm stepped forward and summoned his Narrationblade. He waited.

Bookwyrm stepped forward and summoned his Narrationblade. He waited.

"Bookwyrm, I am thankful to you for making such a naïve avatar. He did quite a good job, and I do hope he manages to get over the crushing guilt that his actions will cause. You'll probably need to help him with that."

Subversion smiled, turning to face those remaining from the vengeance party. "That goes to all of you, as well. I truly look forward to future confrontations, but for the moment I must depart. Before I do, know this. It is solely thanks to your blind determination to exact vengeance upon me for the murder of Valiant that I, Subversion have become the heir to Nameless, the great Narrator brought low by his own avatar. It is thanks to your actions that I have been raised to this station, and your actions that have caused the true death of the one you were sworn to avenge. Until next time, farewell."

With that, Subversion vanished, breaking through all attempts to prevent her departure. She left behind two things: The failed vengeance party, and a lonesome corpse.

Platypus steps forward next to Bookwyrm, Narrationblade in hand. No one had seen it clearly before, and it is dark blue, purple, and black swirled together with light blue, white, and red spots on it.

"The fake Subversion was Valiant, wasn't it?" He asks Bookwyrm. "Because if so, I did care about him. Tell him that if you can."

After speaking, he turned and was gone.

dang it Nameless. Subversion is so cocky, I didn't want her to win. Valiant was much better.

Bookwyrm stood there solemnly for a moment. His Narrationblade vanished into a glittering shifting constellation which faded like embers in the wind.

He looked around the empty room, then crouched down to the corpse. He turned it over to see who it actually was.

"I thought he already died? Oh well." Everyone paused, looking around. "Oh my god. We SUCK. Subversion wasn't even a full Narrator, and have some of TLT's most powerful on our side. WHAT is wrong with us?"

"Information," Bookwyrm said, standing up. "We didn't have the full picture. No matter how much power you have, if you don't have the right knowledge, it's all useless."

Then he vanished.

"Oh, sorry. I should probably explain that part." Subversion reappeared, the ever-fickle Sword of Plot held in her hand. "He was still alive. I killed his body, but his Narrationblade, and most of his power, survived. Eventually, his mind healed, and he broke free of me, mostly. I could still influence him, and of course cast illusions over him, prevent his words from reaching you, twist the words you said to him. Anyways, farewell."

With that, she disappeared (for real this time)

Good. It's my sword now. Unless Plot comes back to life and takes it by force. Wait. What are we going to do with Rue? We never actually did anything to her. I'm sure she'll be fine, drinking root in that clearing with the cottage.

Throughout this whole conversation, Rue has been doing a victory dance around the remnants of the cottage, occasionally stopping to open a new bottle of root. Others joined her. Soon, there were hundreds of people in silly hats and shoes dancing around the cottage drinking root. And so the root cult was reborn.

Unintelligible yawned, finally waking up from his Root-induced coma. He glanced at his calendar, and promptly fell out of his bed.

Unintelligible appeared next to the vengeance party. "Hey guys. Sorry I wasn't able to help you out with Subversion. Were you successful?"
