  1. So, I've got a pretty boring job at a call center, so over the last couple months I've sketched out characters for all two hundred fifty six twinborn combinations. They're not all great and most of them were written before the Bands of Mourning was released so the enhancement feruchemy abilities are a little off, but I had a ton of fun with this and I thought I would share it. 2. The Set is a well defined organization with members that nearly all worship the 'god' Trell. Most of the members we have met in the Set have been native Scadrialans. For the plot of the Wax and Wayne trilogy to feel complete, Sequence and the Set obviously need to be dealt with in The Lost Metal, but I don't think the Set will be completely destroyed--only the part of the organization based out of Scadrial. The Set will continue their machinations in the background, and will be important during the Era 2 Mistborn trilogy. So far, the focus on the Set has been through Suit and Sequence, who appear at the end of Bands to be little more than middle managers. They commanded the actions of Miles, the Marksman, Irich (who called his rank 'Array'), Kelesina, and Templeton Fig. This level seems to be the lowest that actually know much about the Set. They commanded some people (Miles' robbers, Templeton Fig's grave robbing, etc.), but that's the end of the chain. All of the above people are from Scadrial. Above Suit and Sequence are 'the Series', who are a group of people who seem to care about technological advancements (Page 400): The naming scheme of the organization also proves their scientific focus: Set, Sequence, Array, and Series are all mathematical terms (though I'm not sure how Suit fits). This Series seems to be a council, very high ranking within the Set. Suit speaks to one at the end of Bands, and calls it a "Faceless Immortal." I believe they are all "Faceless Immortals"--but not kandra. The Series are not from Scadrial. At the very least they don't have any affinity for the planet, as shown by the "Faceless Immortal" that speaks to Suit (page 434): We know the Set worships Trell, and that the spike is from a Shard we know (Link). It stands to reason that the spike and the "Faceless Immortals" are from the same shardworld. Harmony hasn't said anything about the material from the spike, so it's probably not of Harmony, or something he would understand (Scadrial). From what I can see, Trell is acting entirely through agents. He isn't invested in Scadrial, so he is having people below him do what he wants to be done. This means he has to have a sizable group of people cosmerically aware enough to do his bidding. Secret History Spoilers: So, these beings can take the form of others, and are not from Scadrial. They also have "softly glowing red eyes." I believe they are a group of Svrakiss from Sel. Coppermind: I think this is close enough to a "Faceless Immortal," at least relating to the changing of forms. It at least matches Suit's understanding of the creature he spoke with. Also, someone asked back at the Salt Lake City Comic Con 2014 about Svrakiss: Clearly Svrakiss, or something equivalent, had some influence on Miles--and possibly the Set as a whole. I think introducing the Svrakiss is the reason Sanderson wants to have Elantris 2/3 written before Era 2 Mistborn (State of the Sanderson 2014): The Set worships Trell; believe him to be a god. I think Trell is related to Dominion; Trellium is Dominion's god metal. Trell himself would be someone who holds a sizable amount of Dominions power (not sure how; maybe there exists a particularly large splinter, or found a way to combine Skaze and hold their power). This person with some of Dominion's power commands the Series, and uses them to do his bidding around the Cosmere, including on Scadrial. Summary: Trell is related to Dominion; the higher ranking members of the Set are Svrakiss from Sel.

  3. Hidden by the darkness of the early morning, a single iron-hulled boat steadily made its way into one of the more sheltered beaches of Amaji. The island, known as the Mother to those who still kept the old ways, was a three week voyage from the Eelakin Isles. Fourth of the Rain had made a similar journey many times in his life, but never before had it felt this long. Out of habit, he pulled some parchment out of his trouser pocket and, for the hundredth time in the last few weeks, stared blankly at the seal of the Northern Interests Trading Company. The parchment symbolised a great many things. The betrayal of his family, traditions of his people and his faith. The loss of his livelihood and Aviar. But what could not be overlooked was that it meant a way to survive in a changing world. Rain had chosen Patji, the Father, when he was of age and skill to leave Sori and make his living as a trapper. Whilst there he had witnessed the expansion of the trading company and their strengthening foothold in the Pantheon. As the greed of the traders grew, fortifications were moved further and further into the dense forest of the Father and local trappers who found themselves in the way of progress were shown neither kindness or mercy. Safe houses, if found, would be destroyed. Aviar were seized, and killed if they proved too loyal. The trappers themselves were given the option of employment within the company, or safe passage to leave the island – and with their shielding aviar taken, it was little wonder that very few saw fit to brave the sea’s depths unprotected. Placing the parchment safe back in his pocket, Rain turned his gaze to the other members of their party. Some were former trappers of Patji like himself; others, experienced scouts from the trading company, who had been around long enough to spot a deathant pod or avoid cutaway vines. All were capable of living isolated on the islands. The forests of the many islands in the Pantheon were deadly to the unknowledgeable or unwary, and even the most skilled trappers would find a swift death with one misstep. Even knowing this, Rain could not drag his mind away from the task they had been set, and mourned with the knowledge that the Mother would be soaked with faithful blood before the week was out. As iron hull met the soft sand of the Mother’s shore, Rain paused briefly, half-heartedly asking for the Father’s forgiveness in this blasphemy, before promptly leaping the boats rail and made haste towards the safety of the tree line. Around him the others were doing the same. None wanted to be on ground level longer than absolutely necessary for fear of predators hunting by night. Against his better judgment, Rain turned at the edge of the tree line and watched as his one way off the island gradually faded back into the shadows. There would be no leaving this place until his job was done. ----- Third of the Dawn crouched by the corpse. Only chunks of flesh remained, and there were scores - tooth marks - on the exposed bone. Tuskrun, probably; the marks were smaller than she assumed a nightmaw would make, and they didn't come out during the day anyway. The notebook Dawn held named the trapper as Second of the Sun. Tuskrun were not too difficult to avoid, suggesting the corpse was inexperienced; a reminder of the island's dangers. The notebook said otherwise. Sun had been trapping Amaji for several decades; he would not have made such a mistake. That meant she was late. Dawn had heard the silence of the jungle abruptly disturbed by voices. The sound had startled Jay, sending him fluttering off her shoulder - his wings were clipped, thankfully, else she could well have lost him. After collecting her Aviar, Dawn had hidden - a wise decision, as it turned out, because the brush in the direction of the voices had come alive shortly after. Sun may have encountered a young trapper - one who did not respect the jungle's silence, and called out at their meeting - and then been brought down when the sound drew predators. Dawn doubted that. Even young trappers seemed to avoid speaking. No; more likely the traders had arrived, and had begun their work. Dawn stood slowly, leaning against her staff rather than placing a hand on the ground. She regarded the corpse for another moment. "We need to find the other trappers." Jay chirruped in response as she moved away. She didn't know how to hide her trail, as the trappers seemed to do without thought. And for the moment, that served her needs nicely. ------------- And the game begins. PMs are on their way. EDIT: All PMs have been sent. Player list:

  4. Hey, all. Brandon here. With the release of this book, there have been some minor updates to continuity that I think some of you will find relevant. The big one has to do with Hoid's visit to Terris in The Well of Ascension. For those unfamiliar with the backstory, this little behind-the-scenes action has been a source of some consistent problems. The outline, and original draft, of Well had Vin and Elend traveling up to Terris, then into the mountains, to find the Well itself. This was a huge momentum killer in the story. Having your cityscape-focused book suddenly turn into a traveling quest fantasy for a few chapters felt very out of place, and required too much strange time-jumping to make it work. In revisions, I set about finding a way to repair this, and to overlap the Well of Ascension discovery with Vin's return to Luthadel. The end result worked much better, but I was forced to cut Hoid's cameo. (In the form of footsteps in the snow and frost leading to the Well, hinting that someone had been there just before her.) I knew where Hoid was, and added in the cameo of him with the Terris people—with the plan still being that he visited the Well sometime during the days after Vin's return to the city. Well, in working on Secret History, I found that this had a problem with it. Hoid had to already know where the Well is, because after the destruction of the Pits, he'd need to use the Well to return to Scadrial after leaving in the middle of book one to attend to certain other events. If you've read the story, you know this is how I proceeded. Official continuity is that Hoid went up to Terris after visiting the Well, as he had things to do there. He did not go looking for the Well. This doesn't change continuity for any of the books, though it does render one of the annotations for Well obsolete. Otherwise, I'm quite pleased about this novella. I wasn't certain how it would go, writing something using threads I'd left dangling ten years ago. (You should thank the beta readers, who are all Sharders I believe, for their continuity help. They made me aware pf several things I needed to make much more clear from the original draft, so that canon would be more crisp.) I know there has been a lot of discussion regarding which times when someone appears to hear Kelsier's voice were actually Kelsier. The story offers the official canon for this as well. It's nice to finally be able to give the answers to some longtime fan questions, such as what spooked Vin during her inspection of Hoid and what was up with Preservation and the Mist Spirit. It's entirely possible that, despite our efforts, we slipped up and made some continuity error here or there. If so, I'm terribly sorry! This one has been particularly challenging to do. Thanks, as always, for reading.

  5. So, have we seen a long, narrow bunkerlike building that Kelsier would have seen but Wax would not have? My first thought was the Lord Ruler's hut, but Wax saw that in Shadows of Self. My second thought was something in Secret History, but Similarly, nothing in the Eleventh Metal seemed to fit. So, how about the guard hut at the Pits of Hathsin that Sazed visits in HoA? Kelsier would probably have seen it when he was entering the Pits, and when he left. That building was never described very thoroughly, but it seems like it might fit. So, if that's the case, it could mean one of two things. One (1), mining communities everywhere put particular constraints on architecture, so this could mean that Kelsier recognized the architecture of a mining town, and the Southerners already had a significant metal industry before he arrived (What were they using it for)? It would make sense that mining communities could survive the longest, since they could make use of a bit of geothermal heat. The second option (2), of course, is that it WAS the guard building at the Pits of Hathsin: Harmony moved the Pits to the South Pole, and the Southerners will have a monopoly on Atium when it re-emerges. But I'm definitely not convinced that I've identified the right building. Anybody else have any ideas on what the building might be?

  6. Autumn Glass, who was not an Epic, had never quite grown accustomed to Epics fighting over and around her. She picked herself up, plucking a few pages of her scattered notes off the floor. Her fingers trembled; she couldn't help it. Everything had happened so fast and she still wasn't entirely certain what had taken place. She stood to her feet, casting a glance about to try and piece it together. The room was quiet now, filled with the sound of Jack breathing, in and out, trying to calm himself; and Autumn's, as she wondered if her palm would pass through the floor. She'd held Jack's power for only an instant, but it had been enough to save her from... …from the cookie? Yes. The cookie. It lay on the floor a short distance away, shattered into four disgusting banana-flavored pieces. That the whole fight had started over a loathsome dessert would have seemed laughable, had Autumn not been the one to refuse Crush's insistence that she take a banana cookie from the plate Lee slid under the door. Making a face had been a mistake. "I am so, so sick of all this banana hate!" Crush had screamed, leaping to his feet. "I don't care what anyone says! They're a fantastic fruit! Fantastic! Delicious, nutritious, well-textured, and so high in potassium that they should be soaring through the sky like jumbo jets!" "Okay, it's all right, just—" "Not to mention that they've been a key food crop throughout the history of sub-Saharan Africa! I swear, if you just took one bite, you'd understand! Autumn, please!" She'd been ready to choke down a bite of the horrible cookie when Jack slammed his hands against the table, getting to his feet, growling a threat. At some point, the threats had escalated into shouts, and the thrown cookie had passed through her head as Jack gifted her some of his power, and the next thing she knew, her notes were scattered across the floor and the banana cookie was—mercifully—inedible. Drawing a breath, Autumn grabbed her radio, which had become a beacon for excited chatter from the guards. Jack had Crush up against the wall, glaring into his sunglasses. "It's all right," she said, tucking a lock of loosened red hair behind her ear. "Jack has the situation under control." "What the hell happened in there?" She exhaled, partly in relief and partly in frustration. "The banana cookies happened, Tim. Tell Lee to stop sending them to my interviews."

  7. Please note: This post does NOT mean that Brandon is sticking around to answer questions. Sharders' questions are just too good, and he risks giving too much away if he answers. So he's avoiding that for now.

  9. On my first reading I was under the impression that Shardplate was like Space Marine power armour, 8ft (250cm) of stabby stompy. How the heck did Kaladin get Helaran then? On further reading and wiki perusing I found that it was smaller than I originally thought. Since Shardbearers wear their clothes under their Plate and require special megahorses, I felt that they still needed to be heroically oversized compared to a normal Alethi. Some thoughts I had while sketching this: - Shardplate weighs ~250kg. You can still walk around with half busted Plate but you will feel the weight of a 15kg gauntlet when your elbow section shatters. Shardbearer training probably involves lots of squatz. - Helmets differ the most between suits of Plate and add several inches to your height. There must be empty space inside if you can get hit in the face several times and not die. Also Adolin's helm has little cat ears. - The Havah is a dress with a strip on the bottom that touches the ground and eventually gets dirty, but is meant to be replaced. I drew it as a separate petticoat underneath. You can't sew, cut seams, and resew on good silk because it ends up leaving little fraying pinholes on the fabric. - Adolin is shorter than Kaladin outside of Plate, since Kaladin is repeatedly described as being taller than everyone he meets except Rock. But whatever their height happens to be, Shallan is still a perfect little spoon size for either.

  10. Have I told y'all about my lovely friend who goes by the Internet alias of kuribuchu? Well, she crochets! Storming fantastic, I might add. And she crochet me a little something for my birthday... You guessed it! A soonie pup! Bow down to this amazing piece of art! The legs move, and its completely posable, like in the ad in the book! Sadly she isn't making anymore due to the amount of time, but she's currently working on an etsy shop to sell crochet patterns. I'll post the link here once its done!

  11. First of the Star walked through the dark jungle, the faint light of the moon filtering through the mesh of canopy overhead. Star kept a sharp eye out for, well anything. Nothing was safe here in the jungle, though that was kind of the point. Star had come to the island to test herself, to prove to her parents that she was strong enough to do what she wanted. Looking back on her decision to come here, Star realized her mistake. This wasn't some place you came to prove yourself, it was a hell that you were lucky to survive. Memory Even though it was a terrible place, Star loved it here. In the tight embrace of the thick canopy overhead, she felt as if she could be herself. Someone who her parents had tried really hard to squash, and almost succeeded. For years her parents had tried to crush her rebellious, free lived spirit, trying to make Star into the perfect obedient daughter. When Star wanted to be out in the deep blue see, splashing around with her three older brothers, she was instead inside, learning how to make bread or weave. Boring, monotonous work that her mother assured her that was vital. Hope Star spent then years like that, ever since she was eight, trying to live up to her parents expectations. On the night of her prearranged wedding day, Star decided she had had enough. She had carefully snuck out of the small hut she hand her family shared and had grabbed a small boat. Not thinking about what she was doing, she gently pushed the small craft out into the inky black ocean and set sail for anywhere but home. Luck A small prick from the sharp point of a tinny black thorn on a vine brought Star back to the presnet. Right, focus, she though, one mistep and it won't matter that I escaped that life because I'll be dead. YEAH!!!!!!! My first real RP post!! it is indeed cause for much celebration and festivities! Don't expect this much RP, this is special one time event because it is Saturday and I like to procrastinate things I'm guessing this is to draw me into the conversation right? Green everyone Yellow also black color purple white C1 lynches can be both good and bad, so I really don't have an opinion on them so if it is your wish, go ahead and lynch someone, just please don't lynch me, I wan't to live!!!!!! Now for random word time: Anguish, color, future, fat, dishonest, hover, architect, mind, python, light, ivy, bent, mouse, pot, flower, table, music, lair, lay, lie, carry, touch, finger Oh, forgot I needed to say all of those twice: Anguish, color, future, fat, dishonest, hover, architect, mind, python, light, ivy, bent, mouse, pot, flower, table, music, lair, lay, lie, carry, touch, finger

  12. The situation wasn’t nearly as bad as Noon had thought. From what she’d overheard, she’d imagined that the trappers had witnessed Sal and Pepe attack Sun, wearing the uniform of the Northern Interests Trading Company, with an army of traders behind them and ready to colonize Amaji. But that wasn’t what the trappers had actually been talking about. According to them, what had actually happened was that Sun had died. Noon didn’t understand why they sounded so worried. A trapper was dead. So what? The islands of the Pantheon were dangerous places, even to those who called them home. Whoever had discovered Sun’s body must have overreacted. Noon gradually drifted away from the gathering and climbed a tree overlooking the gathering. Once she was high enough not to be seen, she sat down on a limb to listen to the conversation below. Noon blinked and her cover personality dispersed. This was a prime opportunity for NeLaar to gather some information about trappers and how they interacted with each other, which was something that NeLaar needed to learn, fast. She closed her eyes and listened, thankful for her Blessing of Awareness that allowed her to have such keen hearing. “I bet I could make your Aviar loyal to me,” a male voice boasted. His voice had overtones of covetous greed in it, mixed in with longing. “As if you could, Avis,” a female voice scoffed. Unlike Avis, her voice bordered along the lines of wariness. “If you tried, you’d find all your Aviar missing.” “I could make your Avair loyal,” Avis repeated. “But I wouldn’t waste my time on your Aviar, Gylfie. No, I want Sal’s bird. The one that lets him fly.” The trappers let out appreciative sighs and NeLaar took a mental note that the trappers coveted each other’s Aviar. “Do you know where he got it?” another voice asked. “No,” Gylfie said. “But I’d certainly like to know where he got an Aviar like that. None of the birds here are have Talents remotely near what his has.” So Sal’s Aviar wasn’t common, and all the trappers wanted an Aviar that let them fly. That was another thing to add to NeLaar’s pitifully small knowledge of Aviar: they were birds, they had powers, and they were only found on the Pantheon. Another voice started talking and NeLaar continued eavesdropping. This was going to be a very helpful meeting for both her and her knowledge of First of the Sun. You hating on my home planet? How many eyes do you have? Phatt, there's a big hole in your logic. In LG15b, you voted for Shallan D1. In LG16, you voted for Stink D1. Now in MR11, you're abstaining. Care to explain this sudden change of behavior?

  13. Saludan Leiken was, literally and figuratively, walking on cloud nine. Investiture leaked out from the soles of his bare feet, intermingling with the coalescence of water vapor that traversed the atmosphere and strengthening its Connection with other molecules of its kind. Once Khriss had explained the scientific process involved in what he did, but as with all of her attempts at instructing him he hardly listened. He did, however, remember that if not for the fact that his body was mostly made of water itself than he would be unable to stride upon the skies, as he often dared and adored to do. It was a Thrill in its own right, a Thrill uncorrupted by the Unmade, even on Roshar. The Thrill of Absolute Freedom. The Thrill of Adventure. It was that sense of exploration, of wandering where few men could; of seeing the world - or worlds, as he now understood - from an alien perspective, that gave his life purpose. If not for the burning desire to discover every inch of Roshar that he stoked as a youth, he would have never run away from Alethkar, never witnessed the fall of Jah Keved, never met or befriended the Lost Heir before he was truly Lost, never been gifted his Birthright or sworn himself to Nereim… never become a Radiant; a Worldhopper; a Hero. Though some of his kin hated him for abandoning his homeworld in its time of need, he, and a few others, understood what he did now was much more noble. Any man could take up arms and fight for his own realm. But to leave and put his life at risk for total strangers? Now that… that was what a real hero would do, in his honest opinion, regardless of ulterior motives. Sure, he didn’t have much love for his planet. Even before he knew of Odium he could taste the taint he left upon the land. It pervaded each of his senses, threatening to suffocate the happiness right out of him. Though it was nowhere near as dreary as Scadrial was in its anteverdant days, it was enough to drive him away for good. If he could have chosen any world to call his home it would have been Nalthis. Ever since he first laid his eyes on it he knew it would hold his heart forever. Everything about it, from its vibrant colors to its creative twist on Investiture, seemed more suited to him than any other. If not for his vows he would have remained there forever, but sadly it was not large enough to entertain his attention for long, though he did resolve to return when he was ready to retire. He found Khriss again on Threnody, homeworld of her assistant, Nazh. They did not stay there for long, fortunately. Though the other man was fond of it Sal could hardly say the same. It’s overabundance of Cognitive Shadows was disheartening at best, especially what with their tendency to act unnecessarily violent towards anyone who dares break some ridiculous rule or other. They split up then, Sal tasked with his own mission that involved something Khriss called a Temporal Irregularity. A true mystery, she claimed. Something unlike anything she had witnessed before. He didn’t even hesitate before jumping in. Almost wish he did, for the next thing he knew, he was on some island in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a wide variety of deadly - albeit pretty - beasts that lusted to taste his flesh. After nearly having been eaten for the third time he had no choice but to take the high ground, or in his case low clouds. Besides the strange, magical birds that occasionally ventured up here he never ran into one of those monsters again. Sal did, however, run into another kind of monster eventually. Humans; and the native kind at that. Some of them seemed amiable enough, but having met as many people as he had it was easy for himto recognize the avarice in some of their eyes. Greed was a powerful sin, it was. Especially when Investiture was involved, not that they really understood what that was, let alone that it was what the the thing there were yearning for. Occasionally he would stop by their little encampment. More often than not they would watch him walk the clouds, jealous of his power. To make it easier for them to understand, he asked Nereim to show herself in the form of a bird unlike one they’ve ever seen, one capable of gifting him the power to walk on water. God Beyond, how they thirst for her. If only they knew she could never be theirs. Eventually he knew he'd have to join them if he wanted to truly understand this planet. Sal could only see so much of Patji from up above, what with the thick canopies blocking most of my view of the island beneath. Sighing, he whistled for Nereim, and the Aviar she herself attracted, to return to his side so that he may begin descending again. After disappearing for a couple days he was sure they were eager to hear about the things he'd seen, and honestly, he'd be lying if he weren’t a bit curious to listen to whatever they had to offer in return. EDITED BECAUSE I TOOK A BREAK HALFWAY AND COMPLETELY SWITCHED FROM THIRD PERSON TO FIRST, LOL

  14. The jungle was quiet, as always. Quiet, not silent. It was an important distinction to make, for in that space between quiet and silence lay the path to survival. Second of the Noon sat on a tree branch high above the ground, with one hand on the tree trunk for support. From here, she saw a flashes of bright colors juxtaposed against a vista of verdant greens, rivers winding their way through the understory of the forest, blue skies punctuated with soft, pastel clouds of white. Noon ignored it. As her mentor had said, looks were deceiving. Instead, she closed her eyes and listened. Aviar cooed in the distance. Water splashed in a creek. Ferns below her rustled in the wind. Wait. There was no wind, so how could the ferns be rustling? Noon frowned and listened harder. "Sal must have done it," a voice said. It was so loud and discordant against the soft music of the jungle that Noon winced. "Pepe is guilty," another voice said. Again, to Noon's ears, trained to pick up the slightest of sounds, the volume was deafening. She winced again. The voices were familiar to her -- the people speaking must be trappers. So why were they talking so loudly? Didn't they know the dangers of predators? A third person sighed. "Look, we all need to speak up if we want to find the traders. Sun was obviously murdered by them, and we can't let them get away with it. Remember what happened in Patji?" Noon froze. Patji -- the traders had colonized the Father. Killed him. And it sounded like the traders had set their sights on colonizing the Mother. Oh, no... Noon blinked, and her trapper persona faded away. Harmony had given a mission: to observe this shardworld and its native inhabitants. From what she'd heard, First of the Sun was now in a revolution, the scale of which hadn't been seen since mechanical allomancy reached the northern continent of Scadrial. But in Scadrial, people were already used to allomancy and had been quick to fill the holes not taken by machines. In First of the Sun... NeLaar climbed down out of the tree she was on. Noon had every right to be worried about the traders, so naturally she'd want to help get rid of them. And while Noon met with her fellow trappers, NeLaar could gather some more information about the planet she was living on. ----- Elkanah, do you have any thoughts on what's going on? Traitor and trader sound very similar. Would anybody mind if Noon refers to the traders as traitors? It has such a nice thematic ring to it... EDIT: Greened out Elk's name.

  15. Ok, so I'm just gonna post this before reading any of the posts here in order to get my unaltered reaction. Wow. That book was awesome! So what's going on with Hoid? He used to be Wax's coachman, right? Why didn't Wax recognize him outside that party? And why did Hoid give Wax that weird coppermind coin of Kelsier? Since we know from WOB that Kelsier is still mucking around, is it possible that they're working together? And Connection stores Connection to a place... I guess that means you can't tap a bunch of it to make people like you or something like that.. And it seems that Connection is probably how Hoid and other worldhoppers can speak other languages. Funny that it still brings the accent along. I guess people will be rereading books with that in mind. Actually, Hoid never seems to have an accent as far as I can remember, so maybe he's doing something else. So why is it hard to create a medallion with more than 2 powers? How did they do it in the first place? Hemalurgy? Is that why it's so difficult? Too many spikes? And as the preview chapters hinted at, yes it is possible to crate metalminds with no identity, giving others access to new powers. Cool. I'm glad Wax and Steris fell for each other. It was foreshadowed in SoS nicely. I knew Telsin would be working for the Set! I saw that coming. And wow, Wayne's reaction to Wax's death...! Speaking of which. Wow. And the Set has a weird fondness for mathematical terms. Odd. So what's with that lady at the party? The Ars Arcanum writer or someone working for the writer, I assume. And then there's the informant at the same party. He seems a little too aware of some things that are going on.... And what are those guys with red eyes who apparently want to destroy the planet now that the Scadrians discovered...things? Flight? The Bands? And the ending! Kelsier is the one who helped the Southerners, not TLR! Wow, did not see that one coming! Gives me the chills! But how...? I knew he was still mucking around, but he has his body back and is spiked in one eye? And Feruchemy? From the timeline in the book it sounds like he went down there after Harmony's Ascension...

  18. Hi!! So as you may have realized from the topic folder (I think thats what its called I really don't know), I kinda need some introduction. I actually have been on this website before, but I only got it for looking at theories and spoilers. (I 'accidentally' spoiled the end of the Rithmatist for myself. I know, disgusting.) So gradually while exploring this website, I've stumbled upon more and more social events and games. I really have no clue what they are, but they sound SUPER fun, especially considering none of my friends have read Brandon Sanderson. So questions- What are PMs? Private Messages I think, but I really can't find that anywhere. How do you join a Sanderson Elimination game? I've read through some of them and they seem super complex and fun. I couldn't find when the next one was, or if I should join a beginner round before a different one. I've heard rumors of a movie/video game for mist born, which got me super exited, but are those really happening? If I make really bad and frequent Brandon Sanderson puns, will I be praised or shunned? How do you make a spoiler tag? Or quote something? Is there a forum/article about the technicalities of this beautiful website, cause that would be infinitely helpful. Does Brandon Sanderson ever come on these forums? That would be so cool!!! Thats about it, but I bet as soon as I upload this I'm gonna find something else I need help with, so be warned... Thanks!

  22. I think it's important to remember the Cosmere mechanics that allomancy/feruchemy uses for this problem. When using Scadrian magic, you pump Investiture through your DNA that acts a Catalyst to shape the magic; it's the same as drawing an Aon but using your genes instead if a drawing. So when you tap a metalmind you have the right flavour of Investiture, but you still need the DNA that includes the Catalyst in your Spritweb in order to direct it. Since Nicrosil metalminds can give people the ability to use magic, they must include a copy of that Spritweb Catalyst. So it just needs to be stuck onto your soul for you to have the ability. Obviously in Hemalurgy you need a big ol' spike to staple other people's souls onto yours. I would guess that is because you get something akin to organ rejection; since its someone else's soul it tries to reject it. If Nicrosil metalminds just have the Spritweb Catalyst, then they won't have any of the personal bits that cause that, meaning a spike is not necessary and skin contact suffices.

  23. Well, considering that Bands of Mourning I think The Lost Metal will give us more Cosmere tidbits. I doubt, however, that it will be anything like Secret History. I agree that Elantris 2 is the most likely candidate. I very much doubt that we'll get much out of Oathbringer. I think that Stormlight is going to be the last great epic series that can stand alone (albeit with a whole lot of Cosmere references). My guess is that, even in the back 5, most Cosmere info will be directly related to the Stormlight plot, even though there will be implications for the overarching Cosmere story. Now, Brandon has really opened up Pandora/s Box/let the cat out of the bag/whatever other metaphor you like, so he's going to have to keep delivering more like Secret History. I bet you anything that the next novella, after the Stormlight one, is full of Cosmere connections.

  27. Another possibility for ettmetal is uranium, which, in its metal form is quite exothermic chemically with water. It would make sense for it to be a power source and be able to be in a bomb capable of destroying a city. Being the last natural element on the periodic table, that could make it the "final metal" referenced by Miles.

  28. Day Five: Missing in Action The night was uneventful as everyone kept a weary eye on their neighbors. Mistrust and paranoia was rampant enough that even the slightest movement caused all eyes to lock onto the perpetrator. Several people left the group at one stage or another, either for food or to use the necessary and each time they could feel eyes following them as they left and again when they returned. As the rays of the sun began to shine through the windows everyone breathed a sigh of relief. No one had been attacked. Or so they thought. A quick head count at breakfast showed that someone had gone missing. Of Citona Vinid, there was no sign. Citona Vinid (Shallan) had died. Her body is missing. She had 4 items. Day Five has started so get lynching. PMs are being sent out as fast as possible. Player List:

  29. I am reminded of the scene in the first book when Kel goes to destroy The Pits of Hathsin. Before he does that though, he saves a single man from the pits. This man bore the scars that one gets after spending a long time searching for Atium geodes. This is the only individual that we know of with those scars that could have still been alive after Harmony ascended. Secret Histories talked a lot about "connection", and how it plays a big role in investiture, and applying ones soul/spirit. Maybe the events that the man went through in The Pits gave him a connection to Kel. As that's exactly where Kel snapped and awakened his Allomantic abilities, his link to investiture.

  31. Ok nice reasoning Orlion. After book Elantris Ok I just was looking through ars ancarnums and I found something out! The metallic symbol on part 5 "IRE" is a metallic variant on the aon "ire" found in the Elantris ars ancarnum and means time/age (Diren). None of the other metallic symbols from the headers match any aons though...

  32. My first theory, yeah! Less more of consistent theory, more of pointing out things we don't know which are important for better understanding of TMA. What's in blue is what I'd like to get WoBed about. Or see WoBed. First (Question/Theory): Double godmetal alloys We have: 16 base metals lerasium + 16 alloys with base metals atium + 16 alloys with base metals If we assume that harmonium is not atium-lerasium alloy, then another question arises: Are there lerasium alloys which make atium (and atium alloys) Mistings? Seers are a thing, but we don't know if they can be created by lerasium alloy. Assuming it's possible, now everything goes weird, since there should be also lerasium alloys of atium alloys, to make atium alloys Mistings (like malatium Mistings and so on). But the number of lerasium alloys now goes up to 33 (16 base + atium + 16 atium alloys). So now also atium should have alloys with lerasium alloys, and also lerasium itself (lets wave it away with lerasium alloy of atium being 70% lerasium and 30% atium (allomantically making a Seer) and atium alloy of lerasium being 70% atium and 30% lerasium). So now atium also has 33 alloys. We don't want to explode our heads, so no lerasium alloys of atium alloys of lerasium-something alloys and vice versa. We need WoB on existence of atium-alloys Mistings and if lerasium alloy of atium creates a Seer and also if there are lerasium alloys of atium alloys. Second (Statement): Atium not universally burnable I want to deal a blow to the theory that atium can be burned by anybody/any Allomancer. TLR has been experimenting for 1000 years and Yomen confirmed existence of system of finding Seers (which implies that if there was an overlap of Mistings and atium Mistings, somebody would notice this), so there would be no need to spike Mistborns for allomantic atium. Hell, Ruin would also know that. I am not sure about atium alloys, maybe Mistings can burn god-alloys of their metal? So Coinshots can burn atium-steel maybe? Very unlikely, but can't rule that out. Third (Theory): On Atium and its alloys It fits too well with malatium and gold and electrum. But this could be linked to the 'switching' Preservation did with cadmium and bendalloy. I am not sure I agree with this whole "atium being of Ruin makes perfect killing machines of Allomancers". Because it does nothing like this to Feruchemists and it's almost useless to them. I'd rather say it's connected with temporal effects - allomantically lets you look into the future, feruchemically store age, Hemalurgically... well, I go with it being supermetal in its own system, so there is an exception. What atium alloys do Hemalurgically? I have two theories: It lets you steal what the not-alloyed metal steals, but better. Remember, lerasium alloys take its application (lets you burn everything) and split it to match the metal its alloyed with. So atium-steel steals what steel steals, but better. Second theory is connected with something I have seen around here. It states that allomantically atium switches one of the traits of given metal (external -> internal, Pushing->Pulling etc). Like it does with gold. So Hemalurgically it would steal what not-alloyed metal can steal, but the charge gets changed. So atium-steel could steal allomantic tin from a Thug. Or allomantic iron from a Coinshot. I like the first one more. Fourth (Question/Theory): On Feruchemy and harmonium What god metals and their alloys do in Feruchemy? (apart from atium, obviously. Or maybe there is some misconception about feruchemical atium and storing age is just part of its traits. Extremely unlikely) I assume that harmonium is it's own metal and not lerasium-atium alloy. More like a nuclear fusion of atium and lerasium. With god metals being jokers in their respective systems, I propose harmonium being a perfect, universal metalmind. Also creates a Feruchemist. It's alloys could be a perfect container, working like not-alloyed container. So harmonium-steel is perfect container for speed. No idea about allomantic and hemalurgical harmonium. But things get weird again with alloys - there are probably alloys with base metals, but we encounter the same problem as in First:double godmetal alloys - harmonium alloys of god metals and god metals' alloys. I'm leaning more and more towards no double godmetal alloys. I guess I will go with 'no-triple-godmetal-alloys' rule. Also, it's really hard to figure out what any given metal does in Feruchemy, since Feruchemy doesn't obey the classification of external/internal Pushing/Pulling. Fifth (Theory) : Number of metals 16 base lerasium: pure + 16 alloys + atium alloy + 16 base atium alloys + harmonium alloy + 16 base harmonium alloys atium: pure + 16 alloys + lerasium alloy + 16 base lerasium alloys + harmonium alloy + 16 base harmonium alloys harmonium: pure + 16 alloys + atium alloy + 16 base atium alloys + lerasium alloy + 16 base lerasium alloys = 67 metals. = 169 metals. Godmetals have way more alloys than sixteen. Also, is it confirmed that Mistborn can burn all the metals? Sixth (Question/Theory) : Godmetals I'd really like to know what is the bronze pulse of lerasium and atium and their alloys. Would help a lot. Maybe lerasium and atium belong in a bigger system? Like, what if all Shards were on Scadrial? Then we would get a Shardmetal system. With 16 godmetals, then maybe they would be properly categorized? Also, we would get something like tanavastium and its alloys... 17*16 godmetals and their alloys + base 16. 288 metals. (Pure wildguessing) If I'm right and we can have alloys with more than one god metal in it, then the number of all combinations skyrockets. Too lazy to count them, but with only 16 base, one god metal alloys and two god metal alloys we're reaching 4128 possible metals and the more god metals, the worse it gets (exponentionally, or even faster). It's all assuming that there is a difference between (one_god_metal)-(second_god_metal) alloy and (second_god_metal)-(one_god_metal). If they are the same, the number drops a little but the order of magnitude remains unchanged. Also, I suspect lerasium lets you store Allomancy and its alloys respective metal Allomancy. Summary: There it goes. Questions are what are really questions we need to ask oursleves, Theory is what I invented and Statement is what I very strongly believe with some backing from the books. Your thoughts? Anybody wants a cookie?

I, personally would be in favour of this. It can prevent other awkward work-arounds. Very tangential SoS spoilers: It also means that we might be able to spoiler some of the older books major twists as well. Warbreaker Spoilers: So, are spoiler tags on the Coppermind a viable option? Is there any reason not to have them, seeing as they're already Wikimedia software?

  38. Decided to finally get an account and post here. This (the 16 current Shardholders killed Adonalsium) was, in my opinion, the greatest revelation in the two books that just came out. It puts a lot of things into perspective. Some quick thoughts: 1. God-killing, of course, is not necessarily an evil act by itself. Khriss mentions a multitude of motives, and we know that there are individuals among the Shardholders who were decent/honorable etc.... 2. Whatever were the underlying reasons for doing what they did, the Shattering hardly stabilized the situation. 3. Ym's belief system may need some additional in-depth study. I am now certain that this was a decent-sized hint as to various motivations. 4. It seems that whatever the end-game is for Cosmere in its current form, survival of any Shards may not be necessary or even desirable. I kind of like the idea that Hoid's plan involves making sure that all Shards are down at the end, and their powers are scattered around Cosmere. 5. I too am very interested in whatever transpired between Hoid and the 16 Shardholders. Was any of this in Dragonsteel Prime? 6. Finally, we learned that you cannot take a Shard without establishing some sort of Connection to it. So, how did this play out at the Shattering? Did Adonalsium Shatter into these specific Intents because the 16 had Connections specifically to them?

  40. I was actually concerned about that one. First i thought it will be sort of random behind-the-curtain kind of scenes with maor infordumps disguised as a story. And i was wrong. The story was surprisingly cohesive and balanced, going from known to unknown and back in good rhythm, keeping the pace. In fact the only part that left me somewhat confused was with the IRE for i couldn't quite place them out of hand in the general cosmere space/time. Also, i was worried about Kelsier. Bringing a character back from the dead almost always ends up badly, especially when it was his very death that ump started a chain of events leading to the major convergency in the whole trilogy. Well, I was wrong again (got to get used to that). It was obvious that Brandon thought this through and carefully avoided all the usual traps that comes with resurrection. He was back but not quite back, he was Kelsier yet not exactly the same as we last saw him prior to his death. Actually his image was lamost perfectly lined up to what i pictured the man Kelsier used to be for most of his life, before Mare and the Pits, before his Awakening and his grandest plan. Daring, resourceful, loving the game and ready to take any chance yet capable of being smart about it, overly confident and single-minded (even ruthless in his methods), eceptionally strong will. All came out logical considering his state of being, deprived of his Allomancy, of his physical body even, but at the same time it wasn't full regression since he had to witness the consequences his actions triggered and deal with the bigger picture, one he never knew existed. And to discover a much bigger game as well Loved reading it all.

  41. I went into this book 100% convinced that the Sovereign was Marsh and I am still not entirely convinced that he isn't, having finished. Having only one spiked eye is too big of a coincidence for it not to be Marsh. If anyone remembers, it was a minor detail at the end of HoA, but Vin pulled out one of Marsh's eye spikes. She was actually reaching down for the other one when she popped and Ascended. Marsh spends the entire fight with Elend with a hole in his head. Elend comments that he's able to see right through it. We know that Inquisitors can live while missing spikes, as long as it's not the lynchpin, and I think it's likely that the Sovereign is Marsh after he decided to tap gold and heal his eye, rather than sticking the spike back in. Now, as of Secret History, I think it's safe to say Kelsier is also somehow involved in the process. Seeing as Kelsier was able to talk to Spook via an earring, I'd guess that Marsh's spikes are enough to let Kell talk with him and or possibly control him. Maybe they share the body occasionally, with Marsh handing the reins over. Surely Kelsier does not actually possess his own brother against his will. Surely not. Not after what Marsh went through with Ruin. If Kell did anything of the sort, I would never forgive him. Now, worth noting that Marasi does see Marsh's face in AoL and she says that he has two spikes through his head. It's possible that he's made a fake spike, in the same way that Wayne did for the costume, or—Harmony forbid—he might have put it back in. I'd surely hope not though.

  43. I'm all about Spook still being alive, but the timing is off. I think that it makes more sense that eye-spike man is Kelsier. He has the scars, and there's no mention of Spook having an eye-spike at any point in his rule. If my understanding of the timeline is correct, the visit to the south would have been right in the middle of Spook's rule, and I feel it would have been hard to hide a giant spike in his face.

  44. This had so much information in it, it was incredible. What makes a person able to attune/ascend with a Shard, so much about the Cognitive Realm on Scadrial, and even a hint at how Elantrians keep their power when away from the city (if I was reading that right about the "glowing" liquid the "ancients" drank to restore their silvery glow). Kel impersonating Ruin to haunt them was also really funny. Also, Adonalsium was (if we believe Nazh and Khriss) intentionally killed by the 16, but they all had various reasons for killing him/it, which I don't think had ever been confirmed before, right? Basically, in one story, Kelsier learned as much or more as a lot of people have over many years of puzzling this stuff out. Which is just so appropriate for him. Also he punched two gods.
