There were 3 new Death Rattles spoken in WaT. One about the Night of Sorrows, another one about Sigzil, and the last one I’m not so sure about. It’s from ch 83, Szeth’s flashback 9.5 years ago The only thing I can think of that fits this Death Rattle is Kaladin swearing the 5th Ideal. "Climbing the wall of grief" is fighting against dark thoughts and depression given by Ishar, "my darkened twin" is Szeth, "the captive" is maybe Ishar who took them all captive or because he himself is a captive of Odium's power he took? "The light he climbs towards and loves" is the light Kaladin got after swearing the 5th Ideal and the light in his mind that overcame his depression. This is the only interpretation I can come up with right now. Do you have any other ideas?

Yes. He wanted to do it, but reforging the Oathpact protected them all from being reabsorbed. As long as the Oathpact stands unbroken, Retribution can't absorb spren, Heralds and Honorblades.
-
Yes, a few pieces left Honor, one certainly created Kal's Honorsprear, others possibly invested Kaladin and Syl (no confirmation). Honor did not have a Shardpool, his perpendicularity was unstable, random and in motion. Jasnah used it in WoR to return to PR. All Stormlight was reabsorbed by Retribution immediately after his Ascension. It's gone, taken from every gemstone and every person and animal holding it.

Because when Shallan finally spoke to Kelsier, it's been months on Roshar since Retribution formed, while years had passed on Scadrial. Shallan was the one who informed Kelsier about Iyatil and Mraize's death (because nobody else knew about it, certainly not Felt) and on Scadrial the events of TLM just played out (the crisis mentioned by Kel). WaT ch 147: The timeline did not change. Whole of Mistborn Era 2 happened directly after Retribution's birth, but on Roshar just a few months had passed in that time due to time dilation. Shallan was the only person on Roshar who knew that MRaize and Iyatil were dead and she was the only one who could pass this information to Kelsier, which she did. Others, like Felt, would have suspected that they got stuck in the Spiritual Realm instead.

There was only one person with blue skin in Renarin's vision. We know from the end that Syl and Nale's spren are there, that's 12. The Wind is not with them, but she might be able to visit their vision, which is in SR and she was able to talk to Dalinar when he was in visions of the past. WaT ch 30: WaT Postlude: Kaladin is not bonded to the Wind, but is still bonded to Syl. Whatever happened to Syl will probably influence their bond. I'm not sure if Syl is capable of forming a Bondsmith bond yet, she might just replace Stormfather in small capacity and maybe grow larger in the future. We don't really know what happened to Syl so everything is possible. No, the quote doesn't say ancient Bondsmith were bonded with Old Magic spren, it says they were bonded directly to the powers of creation. Heralds were slowly developing skills like this before Aharietiam. WaT ch 120:
-
The WoB itself confirms it, we also have Rysn in Dawnshard epilogue experiencing those effects, Riino in OB (who as an Elantrian sensed Kaladin watching him from the window) confusing Kaladin Bond with Heightenings and The Sunlit Man stating any investiture gives Heightenings just like that, among other enhancements given by investiture. OB ch 97: TSM ch 24:
-
That's Stormlight healing. Scholars don't have any of this, Divine Breaths don't heal.
-
That would do it. Even better, create a vacuum around Scholars which would kill them almost instantly.

Did Brandon retcon Mraizes vacation history?
alder24 replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Mraize said that he traveled through Shadesmar so technically speaking he visited other planets - just not in the Physical Realm. WaT ch 134:- 1 reply

Nightblood is not your average Shardblade, he's more invested than the God Kind, more than even Unmades or Nightwatcher. It's a special weapon that can't be made again, because Endowment was involved in his creation. Five Scholars can't create more weapons like him. And of course, nobody wants to create another Nightblood (except Shashara, who's dead). Yes you can, but a perpendicularity is not an ideal source of investiture for that and that was my point. Every type of investiture grants effects comparable to Heightenings. Just holding a ton of Stormlight would provide them with perfect pitch, color recognition, life sense etc and that's without mentioning their own innate investiture which is way greater than a Divine Breath. Giving Heralds Breaths wouldn't cause any sensual ecstasy because they already have investiture that gives them this. This means that they can easily dodge any strike a Scholar throws at them, including the use of Awakened objects like ropes. No new Nightblood! That kind of Shardplate can be easily dealt with Honorblades and Surges. Just lash a giant rock into it and it would crack open like an egg, use Cohesion to melt the ground and bury it alive, Progression to bind it with thousands vines, Soulcasting to trap it in a box of rock, aluminum, or flammable oil etc. Shardplates aren't really that powerful in the world of Surges - storming Kaladin killed a Shardbearer without Surges and later significantly cracked a plate by lashing himself into it. From Coppermind:
-
Kel authorized the use of Dor for all Ghostbloods. TLM ch 40:
-
Taln would crush all Five Scholars with Nightblood at once, even without his Honorblade. I have no doubt about it. Heralds were shown to have inhuman speed, reaction time and strength, Taln caught a dart midair, Nale caught an arrow, Ishar bested several Windrunners and Dalinar without even breaking a sweat. They are masters of fighting, the best Cosmere has to offer. They fought armies of Regals and Fused - invested individual wielding Surges - for centuries, Lifeless are nothing in comparison . As much as I love Five Scholars and Awakening, this is not a competition, this is execution. Any Herald would win against one of the Five if you gave them their Honorblade. The only way for Scholars to win is if you gave them an element of surprise and taking Honorblades away from Heralds. I wouldn't work as well on them as it worked on Denth because Heralds already are one of the most invested people in Cosmere - they are way more invested than Returned. If they have their Honorblades, it means they have access to Stormlight directly from Honor and because Honorblade require much more Stormlight than Radiant Surgebinding, they would be filled to brim with investiture and giving them Breaths would be like adding a drop of water to an already full glass. RoW ch 15: IF... RoW ch 111: Not to mention that Ishar, as a Bondsmith, can take away what makes Nightblood Nightblood. That's not how it works. Nightblood's Command is unchangeable and Heralds, because they are highly invested, would be immune to Nightblood's mind control trick. Even a God King with all his Breaths wouldn't be able to break Nightblood's Command. Shardplate can't be Awakened because it's already considered as Awakened. So do Heralds. Nothing because they wouldn't be able to even see. While Lifeless see with their eyes, Phantoms don't have any eyes, they would see via Steelsight. Aluminum blocks it so they would be essentially blind. Heralds fought repeatedly against Magnified Ones, who can grow steel-like carapace at will. They would know how to deal with Kalad's Phantoms. And this is getting unfair - if you allow Scholars to raise an army of Lifeless, why not allow Heralds to raise their own army as they commonly did every Desolation? Just using Honorblade, Heralds would cut through such an army like through butter, with Surges they would devastate such an army in a single minute. No. It's a Bondsmith skill. But Heralds in their prime drew power directly from Honor - they didn't need perpendicularity, Stormlight or spheres (WoB somewhere above). Nobody knows how to do it yet and it would still require a ridiculous amount of Stormlight to reach 10th Heightening. Just a note, Dalinar's perpendicularity is not enough to create a god metal - Shardplate and Shardblade are god metals. Creating weapons like that would be asking for way too much investiture than a perpendicularity can provide. Impossible in short. Soul-cutting weapons require sentience and that needs a ton of investiture.

I think that makes the most sense. I would give you a rep if I still had one today... The strange people are most definitely Sleepless, as in Day 3 epigraphs we had Sleepless writing about travelling to the 4th moon and during Venli's journey she saw a purple Cremling, which most likely was a Sleepless too. They know about Odium's perpendicularity and the broken moon and it's probably because they know it's related to Dawnshards. WaT ch 41 epigraphs: WaT ch 70:
-
So what's the deal with that cremling that Hoid saves instead of Gav?
alder24 replied to Ukuled's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If that Hordeling was from the one Sleepless working with Ghostbloods, Hoid would probably not save it. Another purple Hordeling was seen by Venli in chasms, on her way to Narak and I bet they belong to the same Sleepless. From Rysn's interlude we know there were two Sleepless guards hiding in vents of Urithiru and from Lift's PoVs we know there were a lot of Hordlings in there as well, so I believe that they all belong to those Sleepless guarding Rysn, maybe Nikli. I don't think that was another faction. From SA synopsis and from Arclo's words in Edgedancer we know that Sleepless carefully observe most important Radiants like Dalinar and Navani. It would make sense that, when the contest of champions approaches and they know from their future sight abilities that something pivotal will happen soon, they would observe Dalinar all the time. Nikli was not surprised that Hoid was impersonating Dalinar, he was surprised that Hoid is a Dawnshard again. Nikli came out of vents like an impostor when Hoid started talking with Rysn and he wanted to warn her not to listen to him. -
One mention of "Unite them" in WaT which pick my attention was in ch 99: That makes me think that Unity IS just Dalinar, but including the Dalinar he would become - the Vessel of Honor (even if that lasted for just 5 minutes). We know from the WoB that Odium and the Stormfather saw something different during the Unity moment in OB and I think they saw Honor in Dalinar. As for who the "we" was, from all we got in WaT it seems there were no "we." At best he meant it as the Vessel and the power. Unless everything that happened with Mishram was all planned together with Odium and she was working for Odium to make Honor break his promise to her, which I find unlikely judging from Mishram's reaction to all of this. There were no signs of Cultivation's involvement in Honor's death so that theory is out of the window now.
-
Keep in mind that despite what Ishar claimed, Ishar was the primary reason for Herald's madness. By holding the power of Odium, Ishar corrupted Heralds through their bond. Battar greed was caused by it, just like Nale's condition and when Kaladin swore the 5th Ideal, he cleansed Ishar and the rest of the Heralds. They are still insane with their individual problems, but most of their madness should be gone now. If Battar after all of this was still wanting to work for Odium, she would have refused to join the new Oathpact and thus doom them, which would serve Taravangian the most. She joined it, which I think strongly suggests that she genuinely wanted to help fight against Retribution. WaT ch 140: Yeah, I think this will happen. It looks like Odium made at least a promise to Dova, if not a binding deal. If that was an Oath, then Battar will have to carefully balance on the edge of the knife, otherwise she will be put fully in the hand of Tara and he will be able to destroy her, breaking the Oathpact. That was Jezrien, because he's dead. Battar was not working with Odium back then. The one that's not there is Nale's. The Oathpact Connects every Herald with each other, that means every Herald is Connected to 9 other Heralds - Nale can't be Connected to himself. The broken one is Jezrien, the strong one is Taln, the rest are Connecting him to other Heralds, including Battar.
-
He's not bound by them, he chose to be because Honor desperately wants to honor their Oaths, even if they were broken. To keep Honor part of him under control and prevent him from abandoning him, Taravangian chose to keep his side of the deal, allowing Azir and the Shattered Plains to remain independent. WaT ch 145: Yes, unless Dalinar breaks the terms, which would release Odium from Roshar. Dalinar didn't just break the Oath regarding the contest, he break all Oaths Honor/Tanavast ever made with Odium, including the one which bind him in the first place. RoW ch 112: WaT ch 143: I suspect Honor doesn't mind Retribution leaving the system because that was the deal between Honor and Odium, which now are one, while he does mind keeping their word to Azir and Shattered Plains because despite being released from that deal, Honor wasn't a part of it, humans were and they "mostly" kept their side of the promise.
-
Aluminum is a commonly found element in meteorites and asteroids, it's no surprise it falls from the sky. Yanagawn said that all aluminum he owns as the emperor came from meteorites. The 4th moon crashed on Roshar way before Honor arrived there. During Honor's first clash with Odium over the Shattered Plains the pieces of the 4th moon were already buried in the ground. Honor also said that the pieces of the moon were made out of "something greater than aluminum" - that's either duralumin or a god metal.
-
Probably not, although Dalinar may claim this - that's one explanation of what was going on. Brandon will never confirm or deny if the Beyond and the God Beyond exist in Cosmere, because this is too fundamental to the beliefs of many characters in Cosmere and the answer would invalidate their beliefs. Nohadon and Dalinar are strongly Connected for some reason and there is a remnant of Nohadon's Spirit Web in the Spiritual Realm, so one explanation is that Dalinar created a vision of Nohadon and it was just like all other of his visions. I understand why. The visions Dalinar experienced with Nohadon were very weird and special, there was something going on with this. But I agree, he's probably dead as Rayse and Tanavast said and it's just some SR shenanigans due to Dalinar's idealization of Nohadon. However, I wouldn't be surprised if he's still alive, but as a normal person, not a Shard.
-
My only guess is Time. The Wind said in ch 86 that Time is her cousin - this could be metaphorical, or literal. And I agree, rather than the 4th moon being of some hidden Shard, I think it represents either a dead Old Magic spren, or Adonalsium himself. Do we know that there were 4 moons before the Shattering? What if there was just one moon and during the Shattering it was shattered as well into 4 pieces, one of which fell on Roshar? Rosharan moons are very small, comparable to Phobos, which is around 11 km in radius - that's not a lot of space for water. However, Phobos is way too small to even have liquid water on the surface, because it needs an atmosphere and for that you need more mass. Without atmosphere, water would evaporate, ice too because it's too close to the sun.

Can Heralds uses surges without the blades?
alder24 replied to Sythrin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Looks like not. In ch 142 Ishar said that he has no powers and no Surges, when Kaladin asked him if he could do something to stop Nightblood. What part specifically? Microkinesis allows the manipulation of forces that bind Axon together (think fusion/fission). Nale wasn't doing anything like that and Cohesion is the closest cousin to Microkinesis on Roshar (said in RoW Ars Arcanum). Nale's inhuman strength and speed came from being a Herald, not Surges - it's comparable to Returned inhuman speed. -
Perception shouldn't matter here, time dilation is the same for PR and CR. It's mainly because Selish CR is filled with a deadly plasma storm, but there is time dilation there. How big it is we don't know, it might have partially caused problems in getting in and out of Sel and there is one WoB that suggests time dilation affected Kaise from Sel who was on Scadrial during TLM. Whether this happened because of the Dor on Sel, or due to some other things related to common methods used by Worldhoppers to slow down aging is unknown.

Shards changing -- concerns for the Cosmere
alder24 replied to logicless.bt's topic in Cosmere Discussion
From many WoBs we know that Shardic intent can be changed. Rayse tried to do it claiming to be Passion, not Odium and this did have an effect on his Shard. Ati did the same with Ruin, he successfully channeled its intent to become embodiment of entropy, not just mindless destruction. The Vessel filters Shardic intent and provides an interpretation to it. Honor is a very specific case. The power was left alone for so long that it started to develop sapience and self-awareness - its own mind. The power started to manifest its own Vessel. Even though Taravangian holds Honor, this new mind is still there. It can learn, change and provide a different interpretation of Honor. But WoBs are clear, the change is limited. There is a framework that binds the intent and you can't force the Shard to be about something that isn't within the borders of this framework. -
Euridrius is the name of Reason's Vessel. Nohadon was said to be dead by both Rayse in OB and Tanavast in this book. I think it's just the God Beyond. He faded into the Beyond, which was said directly in the book. The Beyond is a place that not even Shards can reach.
-
No idea, I think it was meant to represent either Adonalsium, or a 4th Old Magic spren which got killed before Honor arrived at Roshar. I doubt it's representing another Shard. It wasn't in Shinovar, Odium's Shardpool was below the Shattered Plains and that was the pool used by both Mishram and later Ishar. Shins have Honorblades, they can use Elsecalling to move between CR and PR and switch the blades. Stormlight RPG will feature a story explaining how they got Taln's blade. Stiffened fabric doesn't have to be armor, it can be a weapon - a thrown rope with a spike at its end can be stiffened and it would be like a spear, banners or sheet becoming walls and stuff like this. We will see more of it in the future books, but I see a potential for some fun things. No idea. We will have to wait for Jasnah's book, which I think is the 10th one. Yes. That was Kal and Syl, but no, Syl isn't physical. They aren't in any place, their minds are locked in the Spiritual Realm probably, away from Braize - it's a vision. Syl and Nale's spren are there together and Nale's spren took this journey to Braize many times before. We don't know, but it's probably similar to how Heralds manifest their own body out of investiture every time they return. He failed to recreate this, it seems spren need to cooperate with him and they all rejected him. The Everstorm spreaded all across Roshar. It makes them all depend on him and his light for survival and to get his light, they need to pray to him. He wants them to worship only him. They will probably struggle, but I think Retribution will grant them his light - there is no reason not to do it. The lack of crem and nutrients carried by Highstorm might be a problem, but I bet in the end they will adapt and survive. Surges were involved (not Rosharan ones), but we don't know which one. Division is a solid candidate. Dawnshard was also involved. It's not the same as atmospheric ignition speculated by scientists (as that's fusion of nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere that would wipe out everything on Earth in a single moment), but similar to it, probably inspired by it. Hemalurgy was used to restore his sight, but instead of metals, crystal was used, which is new. Because of this, he can see investiture through his spikes, just like inquisitors could see traces of metal everywhere with their metal-spiked eyes. Yes. I think the mechanism might be a little bit different now, I think that as long as all 10 Heralds are alive and keep their Oath, spren can't be incorporated into Retribution - even if Heralds choose to return to Roshar. We don't know fully how this will work, we have to see, but because the purpose of the Oathpact is different now, it can work slightly differently. The opposite. Unbound blades and plates can be summoned without Stormlight (but only those that are with Adolin and Maya), but those bonded to Shardbearers, while they can be summoned, they can't be repaired and bonded in the old way without Stormlight. Unbound are something new, a new way of using Deadeye. To Ascend to Honor, one needed to understand it. Dalinar had to relive Tanavast life in order to understand what Honor's power wanted and how it felt. We don't know. We know she can create Oathgates, but she requires a big amount of investiture at both ends and there is some cost associated with using her. A price that Taravangian will have to pay in the future. Yeah, we didn't really have any time to explore what it does. I think Radiants will stop leaking light (as each Ideal makes them leak less and less light) and they will use their light even more efficiently, but it doesn't look like either Szeth or Kaladin got something extra out of it. And certainly spren don't merge with their knights and don't become physical like some theories suggested. I don't think so. It seems to me that Honorblades are't a part of the Oathpact directly (Heralds are), they are more like a gift that comes with it, granting Surges Heralds used to have before becoming Heralds. But we will see. I believe so and into Kaladin himself - Heralds hold parts of Honor. If they leave their Oathpact. As long as they don't break their Oath, like they did during Aharietiam, he can't do anything to them. Returning to Roshar doesn't count as breaking the Oath.
