This contains references to Shardblades from SA and I don't want to play with spoiler boxes. I'm avoiding spoilers from SA. No idea how would it work.Them being humans might change something. Nonmagical weapons aren't invested. SA WoB: I assume there is a difference between aluminum and an invested object, aluminum isn't invested. Invested object is, and its investiture would resist investiture of another object. As the WoB stated, if a simple cloth was given enough Breaths it would fully block a Shardblade cuts. A simple Awakened strawman is said to resist to some degree. Both of those things are made out of very cuttable material. And look at the WoB you've posted, Brandon had a disagreement on that one with Peter, they didn't canonize it yet: "I've been pushing for one answer, but Peter (whom I trust) is pushing back. We will see what ends up in the books as canon." I think they would act more like a Half-Shard, until they reach a point when they're comparable to Shardblade and would fully resist them no matter how many times they got hit by them. Like Nightblood. It's harder because stone and metal were never alive. Awakening is about mimicking life, it needs Awakened objects to be as close to life and living shapes as possible. Metal and stone were never alive. I understand your concern. Keep in mind, a knife isn't invested. It doesn't have a massive amount of investiture attached to it that strongly resists other investiture. Take 2 pieces of iron, you can put one next to the other with no problem. Magnetize them and suddenly when you turn them towards each other with the same pole, they will repulse each other. That's how investiture might work - a different type of force that resists two items from getting close to each other due to investiture. There are two highly invested souls colliding with each other, preventing the Shardblade from cutting it. A knife isn't invested, there is no collision of souls. I find both options possible. One that highly invested piece of cloth won't be cut by a Shardblade, no matter how sharp it is. The second one that it will be, because it's physically cutting it. We have to wait and see which one will be true. What is that? I hope you don't imagine leather armor as literal pieces of leather and nothing more, like depicted in games or movies. That didn't exist. Brigandine was a "leather" armor, with metal plates riveted into leather which held it in a shape. That's how leather was used in armor. But leather itself isn't armor. It's soft. It can't protect. You can. But wood doesn't move so Awakened wood won't do anything, it won't move. I don't think we know if an aged once alive item would be harder to Awakened, possibly, but it still was alive so maybe that doesn't matter at all? In Warbreaker they use ropes and cloths all the time, and those were not alive for a very long time. I hate it when I just write a long response, paste a WoB in the wrong place, click ctrl+z and the whole response disappears with no way to get it back...

Do Knights Radiant get all 10 Surges??
alder24 replied to in Truth, watcher of tv's topic in Stormlight Archive
Here: That's because of how healing works in Cosmere. It matches your physical body to your spiritual ideal filtered by your cognitive perception. If you can change the way you view yourself, you can change your physical characteristics. Edit: Theoretically, a human can heal into a Singer if some specific circumstances are met. -
Prediction For Stormlight 5 (Spoilers for RoW)
alder24 replied to Jace The Firesworn's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, I think he has already found one RoW ch 114 Interesting idea, but would Stormlight allow Singers to access Regal powers? It might as Venli could power Surgebinding with Voidligth, but she had a Voidspren bound in her too. I think it's just Voidlight, She as an Unmade had a very strong connection to Odium, she the strongest of them all. I think she connected to Roshar itself, rather than Honor (I don't think it would be possible for her), and that's why her imprisonment hurt everyone that belongs to Roshar (as the Sibling said). So you say he will survive the Contest? I don't think Stormfather is able to manifest as a Shardblade, like other spren. He likely already exist in PR and already has a physical form, just like the Sibling and Nightwatcher. He can't really be in two places at once. And what Dalinar did hurt Stormfather very much, which further supports the idea he can't do that. Why not just release her? Nightblood won't work anymore on Szeth, as Szeth has drawn him, form a bond and isn't tempted anymore by Nightblood. And how would that made him conscious? Nightblood already is conscious and sentient. Of course Szeth can just draw Nightblood out and wait for him to consume his soul, but it won't be something like "oh I'm evil now, Nightblood will take control over me"... Oh I like this idea, Adolin as Dalinar's champion and Dalinar stepping in to save him. Well, Dalinar can still die during the Contest, be turned into CS by Odium, as per contract, and still live after his death leading Odium's army into Cosmere. NO! You monster, take those words back! That's brilliant I don't think I was supposed to argue with your ideas guys, sorry, I just couldn't resist. -
Do Knights Radiant get all 10 Surges??
alder24 replied to in Truth, watcher of tv's topic in Stormlight Archive
No, we don't know that. What is your source? The text supports the opposite, as first Surgebinders were the result of spren copying Honorblades and their effects, and every Honorblade gives only 2 Surges, therefore early spren bonds would also grant only two Surges. Ishar bound them to likely make sure none of them would do some crazy stupid things with this potentially unlimited power, like for example destroying their planet. He knows a thing or two about that. The surgebinding diagram opposes this idea, every order is connected only to 2 Surges: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Surgebinding#/media/File:TWoK_Front_Endsheet.jpg That's because this is the nature of healing. General, across the whole Cosmere. Stormlight is easily accessible and usable and it naturally heals people. Not really a Surge of Progression, just the nature of Stormlight and healing. They get pulled over by the bond, the stronger the bond the more spren are able to manifest physically. That works for other spren too - Windspren sometimes manifest themself in CR, Mandras and emotion spren get pulled into PR etc - that's more the nature of spren rather than the Surge of Transportation. Shardblade cuts by converting matter of the object into investiture, it doesn't destroy it. Is every Connection the result of Surge of Adhesion to you? Is every Rosharan connection to their planet the result of Adhesion? It's the other way around, Connections exist naturally, and the Surge of Adhesion allows you to manipulate them, create new ones. And what does it have to do with the Surge of Gravity? That's because of the Connection. Connection again. I see what you're doing and I know what you mean by this. There are connections you can draw between abilities of Radiants and their spren and some Surges. But I don't think that's because of Surges. Those things are just natural, they're a part of the Nahel Bond, of a spren's nature etc. They just exist, like gravity isn't because of the Surge of Gravitation. Surges allow manipulation of certain Cosmere properties, Cosmere laws, but those exist beyond Surges. Connections aren't because of Adhesion, they exist without this Surge. Connections grant powers, they grant knowledge, languages, they tie souls together. Adhesion is just a way of Connection manipulation. But not every Connection is made with the use of Adhesion, not every power granted by Connections is because of the Surge of Adhesion. The same with Transportation - Perpendicularity doesn't use the Surge of Transportation. It just uses the same basic principles defined by the nature of Cosmere but works differently, by a different magic system. It's more the other way around - the Surge of Transportation is Rosharan way of copying naturally existing Perpendicularities. The Surge of Gravity is Rosharan way of copying and manipulation force of Gravity. The Surge of Adhesion is Rosharan way of accessing and manipulating Connections. -
Yes, sentience allows them to choose the intent. Nightblood is different, he also has the Command, which takes over him when drawn out of sheath. As said in the WoB I posted, it depends on the amounts of Breaths in the cloth, SA spoilers: We do know. In Warbreaker an Awakened rope thrown by Vivenna was cut by Denth into two pieces and both of those pieces were still twisting trying to "hold" something, trying to fulfill their command. WHY? Atium is burned only against other Mistborn who have Atium. Vin was above Hazekillers and regular soldiers. That's just wouldn't happen at all. Atium was too precious, especially during WoA. Just read that chapter again, there was no fight, that was a massacre. And Zane knew it would happen, Zane believed that Mistborn are above normal humans, he knew Vin would never burn Atium when fighting against normal people. Vin only started to burn Atium as a reaction to others burning it, with one exception during the first raid on Kredik Shaw. Since then she only burned Atium when others were already burning it.
-
Or intent - Vin did it intentionally, Breeze had never tried and didn't know. SA spoilers: It was said about bronze but it applies to both of them, HoA epigraphs ch 16:
-
This is the table of Metallic Arts, Allomancy and Feruchemy. Those are metals used by them. Malatium is the 11th metal, used by Kel and Vin TFE. Only Electrum didn't appear in WoA, but that's not a spoiler and you will see in HoA why. For the metal which Elend burned, that's a spoiler and this is the reason why it isn't in WoA Ars Arcanum. It will be explained in HoA.

There are two possibilities I see - one is that metal reserves manifest themselves in the same shape they're in your stomach (which is what I believe is happening), the other is that it is just about the amount of metal they have. If the first one is how it works, then Vin would be fooled, as she sensed a "sphere of Atium" as a reserve, not knowing it's empty inside. If the second one is true, she should have realized that it's smaller than it should be, but maybe she was distracted. I believe it's the first option, because there is a WoB (which I can't find now), that if Mistborn swallows a metal ball encased in a sphere made out of another metal, Mistborn won't feel the metal inside of the sphere as a reserve and won't be able to burn that inside metal. But I've found the real explanation instead - she wasn't experienced enough with Atium to see the difference: What Mistborn? Zane likely knew there were no Mistborn left besides them and that Cett certainly has no Mistborn at all - he knew he was safe.

Something like that. I not that sold on the idea of right allomantic pulses, zinc affecting happiness sounds the same, but it can be heard by pulses which person is targeted, and animals might experienced emotions slightly different than humans, just a bit, both of those factors would change the pulse just a bit, fitting it for the animal. But that can't be the case, creating right pulses for a particular species isn't the way to do it, because the WoBs specifically said a certain level of sapiency is required, your method would allow Allomancer to target all animals. SA: Yes, I think that's the reason, On Scadrial people manifests as a mist figure, on Roshar: Plus perception - deep sea creature would never be seen by people on Scadrial, and they wouldn't be subjected to people's perception, while SA:
-
No, I'm not. The WoB said Identity is the problem. It partially prevents them from changing from where steel lines are coming from - they come from the "center of self". Change identity, you're changing your "self", perception matters, you can change where steel lines are coming from.

I don't think Breeze is a savant yet. He is on his way to it, his soul is warping, but he isn't a savant yet, he is just more skillful than others. But I do like the idea of savanthood effects of brass/zinc proposed here.

It's Not Just Renarin - Truthwatchers Could All See the Future
alder24 replied to Longshot97's topic in Stormlight Archive
Tanavest did become more focused on keeping oath rather than on their meaning before his death. Yes, Koravellium Avast was a dragon, if her name wasn't an obvious clue for you I don't think being immortal is a considerable factor when handling a Shard, it's all about their mind, how expanded their mind is, how wise they are. Dragons might have an advantage here too, making them better vessels. Dragons might also have naturally greater Fortune than humans, making them better at predicting the future as Shards.- 75 replies

Welcome to the Shard. Investiture glows for Shards, If Timbre hides herself inside Venli's body or very close to her, inside her pouch with spheres with Stormlight/Voidlight, Odium won't notice her, as Venli's soul glows as bright as Timbre and Stormlight and Voidlight blinds him as well. The closest Timbre was to being discovered is when Dalinar pulled Venli inside his vision, but because Odium wasn't able to quickly break into that vision, and had to attack it until it was fully broken (due to Stormfather's resistance) Dalinar was able to sent Venli away, before Odium took over and was able to notice her. RoW spoilers: Mistborn spoilers:

Well, adding one thing to Treamayne's post, Taln didn't break. On Braize they torture Heralds until on of them breaks allowing Fused and Voidspren to return to Roshar. After Aharietiam, the Last Desolation which you saw at the very beginning of WoK, Heralds abandoned the Oathpact, leaving Taln alone on Braize, because they realized he didn't break even once. Taln was left alone being tortured for 4500 years, but he didn't break. He didn't allow them to return. Odium eventually found a way to go around Taln, that was the Everstorm. This likely sent Taln back to Roshar for unknown reasons.

I talked about it in a previous post, yes, halfway through steel will help and push the bullet towards the muzzle. But that’s half a barrel length through which the bullet suffers through additional declaration, opposing the force of expanding gas. Of course that force shouldn't nullify the force form pressure of the gas, but it isn't efficient design, which I wanted to point out. That sounds logical. I see a potential danger. The amount of zephyr spores used for guns must be very little, Tress got her face wounded by just a few of them in the open space. In many cases a single spore creates a big Aether, so you don't need a lot of spores for guns. And then as we saw when Tress was patching the hole in the hull, a small amount of steel was pushing away Aether expanting in that direction. That's the reason for my concern. If there is a 30 cm long barrel, a few millimeters thick, that's a lot of steel, more than Tress used when patching a hole. Just a few spores might not create sufficient force during ignition to escape that force of steel barrel pushing Aethers into the back of the barrel. And there is a little hole in the back of the barrel for the ignition mechanism, a hole through which all that air would want to escape. And that might explode your gun.

This one: What do you mean? They are very vague, mostly metaphorical, not literal, they're heavily subjected to interpretation. They're either wrong or correct, not in between. Not all Death Rattles predict the future, some are about current events/people, not important, some might refer to the past. That's why Death Rattles are a perfect tool for foreshadowing, they're so vague that they fit multiple different interpretations and you just don't know what they mean. I find it really pointless to discuss whether Death Rattles still predict the future or they can be wrong.

SA spoilers: Yes, I think every living creature has a human-like cognitive aspect, but maybe they aren't equal to adult human aspect.

Yes, that's possible.

Keep in mind you don't need to store extreme amounts of mental speed Sazed was storing. You can adjust the amount of stored attributes depending on your needs and situation. That's why it's hard to say what activity can be used for storing. Watching some chill movie or taking a stroll, just store a bit, watching some stupid movie that makes me want to scream "that's not how it works" - store a lot here. Sitting and relaxing, or while traveling as a passenger, when shopping, when making and eating food, or when waiting for something or being bored, laying in bed and watching stuff on your phone (a lot of watching on this list), when doing some mindless, repetitive work. Even normally, when you have some troublesome thoughts while doing some work, just store a bit of mental speed, your brain will have a harder time dividing attention between working and thinking, forcing you to focus on the task at hand, pushing away your thoughts. Like with processors in computers - the more processors you have, the more computing power you have, you can do more tasks at the same time. When you start to take away some processors, your time needed to do all tasks extends. But some of those tasks are not needed, useless, you can stop them and focus on doing meaningful tasks within the same time while having only half the amount of processors. Yes, when storing zinc your time to process information from eyes, ears etc, increases. But you don't need to store that much for it to be a problem, like Sazed was doing in WoA. It really depends on what you're doing. You can store like 20% of your mental speed, acting more or less like when you're tired, still able to do many tasks with almost the same efficiency as normally.

You will think slower. But when you have more information to process through, more thoughts on your mind, thinking slower would make you "filter" thoughts, and you might be able to focus just on the important one (still slower). Just like when you're very tired, you're thinking just less, about fewer stuff. It won't be as direct as I described it.

As far as I know, there are two effects here that works together - heat and air compression. It's like a spaceship entering the atmosphere with enormous speeds - it compresses the air in front of it, heating it up and friction carries that heat into the spaceship. If you get rid of heat, by for example storing it in a Brassmind, you still have air compressed in front of you, resisting you harder and harder the faster you go. At some point every step would just feel like running into a concrete wall. But friction would eliminate that issue as well, as you can basically get rid of air drag fully.
-
Yes, there are many moments in your daily life when you just don't need to think that much, you can store a little, not to the level of mud-speed. You have problems with overthinking simple problems - store it. Sometimes when you're having intrusive thoughts, just store zinc and silence them. Something annoys you - store zinc and you'll think about it less. Plus storing zinc would help you relax and preserve energy. There are still benefits to storing zinc.

You have a point, it will keep you focused at the task longer, and make you more inventive to complete that task. However all your attributes are still the same as in normal humans. It's useful if you know about an incoming fight and can prepare for it. That's not because of determination, that's an adrenaline rush. Can determination provide you with adrenaline? No idea, but I doubt it can achieve as good effects as the Thrill. However one can make an argument that F-electrum involves manipulating adrenaline, in that case it would become quite useful, because adrenaline affects your whole body not just your mind. After all, storing determination causes depression. Yeah, no, I'm getting punched in the face, I'm on the floor losing my consciousness, no matter the amount of determination I have. Steel, pewter, gold would directly prevent me from getting hit or sustaining injuries, even iron would do that. Determination won't help when you lack physique, nor will it stop your bones from breaking. Determination can help you build physique and that's what it's good for, but that's a time consuming process.
