What do the first two Ideals do?
Spoolofwhool replied to Mason Wheeler's topic in Stormlight Archive
The KR orders don't progress through their ideals at the same rate. So what one order gets at the second ideal, another might get at a later one. For instance, Lightweavers get the shardblade really early on like Edgedancers. Also, even if they don't grant new abilities, a higher ideal will grant greater control over surgebinding and stormlight efficiency. -
Yeah. Shinovar has dirt and is basically the most Earthlike part of Roshar. I wonder what's going to happen though when the rest of the continent wears away. Also makes me wonder how it formed in the first place. Mistborn spoilers.

Why? Mistborn spoilers

I wish we could get a recording of Brandon reading this. Amazing work.

That's not what it said. It says she influences it. That could mean she's invested in it, or maybe that she can control the concentration of it in highstorm water, or something else.
-
Here. I think this breaks the theory.
-
The highstorms are invested by both Honor and Cultivation. This has been fairly strongly implied.

Hmm. Good points. Exact points I had come up to myself before. I'm not actually sure why I argued that. Coming up with an imaginative way to burn ettmetal is something I would normally do. Anyhow. I don't think ettmetal in a solid capsule idea is the best since vacuum issues. Drinking it in oil and burning quickly seems like the best way.
-
I'm pretty sure there's a difference between inside of you for the sake of burning metals and inside of you for the sake of soul interference to start having effect. Nobody seems to notice the metal being burnable the moment it's in the mouth; they only seem to notice it once swallowed.

Yes. Blood is largely water.
-
Using hemalurgy with a Lifeless is tricky as you would need to use blood in them to interface with the hemalurgic spikes.

These are some really interesting points, and I'll have to respond to them in detail later. However, for now I'll point out that the evidence being provided to argue that the numbers belong to the shards seems to be a set of massive stretches when compared to the arguments that the numbers belong to the planets, since we have direct cases of associating the numbers with the planets. Re: Cultivation: Roshar had life, sapient life, before the shards arrived, by all accounts, and possibly human life as well, so you're point that three planets with life indicate Cultivation is three doesn't really work since the life is independent of her presence.

Dawnsingers=Honorblades? (WoR and Edgedancer spoilers)
Spoolofwhool replied to Markus's topic in Stormlight Archive
Brandon likes to use the term sapient for what it means, the mental capacity to affect judgment, and sentience for what it means, simple self-awareness and reaction to stimuli.- 8 replies

I don't know what you're trying to say here. That's approaching Cultivation from a really limited viewpoint. It's more accurately the natural growth and enhancement of concepts and objects, the opposite of Ruin's desire to bring about the natural end to things. Also, What are you considering to be life? One of the planets is home to cognitive entities, which I don't consider to be alive. He's been there for several millennia at least, which means he would've naturally begun investing into it. Shards naturally start investing into worlds (at least), if they remain around it for too long. I don't know what you're saying here. Please elaborate.
-
Spren is the Rosharan term for splinters.
-
It depends on the investiture. Not all investiture changes your spiritual age. I don't think allomancy does.
-
All shards can see into the future as they're powerful spiritual entities. However, some are better than others at it, such as Preservation being better than Ruin.

It makes people more effective at killing other people.

Yes, I know you can burn piercings and metals in other parts of the body. I'm just referring exclusively to the case of swallowing the metal before burning it, since that's what's being discussed, in which case it appears it does need to be in the stomach. I don't think the mouth is cognitively considered inside of you enough for you to burn metals in their and the throat feels on the edge as well. You did spark the idea though that maybe a plated ettmetal piercing could be burned without danger. Still unknown if you need to touch the metal directly to burn it.

Yes. I know what you're talking about. -

He could probably compound them if he has the appropriate allomantic power. -
For 9. The woman is just symbolic, something Isaac added on his own accord. It doesn't have a deep Cosmere meaning.

I think the metal has to be in your stomach to be burnt and there's a lot of fluid between your mouth and there for it to react with.

Splinters are pieces of investiture which gain sentience, and which have never been living entities. Additionally, it doesn't look like Harmony actually did anything to help Wax come back other than ensure that he didn't go Beyond before Marasi arrived with the Bands of Mourning, and maybe provide a slight connection back to the body.

Creating the Southern Scadrians' Medallions
Spoolofwhool replied to Argent's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I see what you mean. However, at the same time, it's not the first time he's done that. I'd say that the inquisitors operated on a similar principle. In any case though, the books have stated that there is probably something missing from the main character, and therefore our, knowledge. As you quoted from the book earlier, VenDell says, "somehow manipulate identity and investiture," which seems to be an admittance that not everything is known. There is an acknowledgment that some process is needed, which has not been determined yet by the kandra and the Terris.
