(Cosmere Spoilers) Thoughts on BoM re-read
Spoolofwhool replied to Steelheart's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Why are you referring to a person's sDNA being keyed to something when the original idea was about something being keyed to someone's sDNA? In any case, stormlight keys easily. When you're using shardplate the stormlight in the shardplate is keyed to you, which prevents other people, like surgebinders, from easily taking it away.- 32 replies

Jasnah and the Cosmere *WoR spoilers*
Spoolofwhool replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes. I see no reason to think that she could've gone to Scadrial in the timensional afforded, taking into account time dilation and distance. I always just interpreted her description of having a bandolier as a sort of satchel to carry things. -
Urithiru is Soulcast & What's Up With Holy Crem
Spoolofwhool replied to ArborealEtymologist's topic in Stormlight Archive
Crem is fairly likely to not be from shards since it existed before shards were on Roshar. Even if you're still extrapolating that crem is some physical manifestation of waste from spren, that makes no sense as then there would be the spontaneous appearance of crem indoors, which has never been observed. -
cosmere Shard Combination Attack Against Odium
Spoolofwhool replied to Zennix's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My opinion is, and I believe it has been implied to be, that they can leave the system after becoming invested. The only issue is that they wouldn't be able to access the investiture invested into the world once a sufficient distance away, so would be marginally weaker if they did go to another system. Additionally, the power invested into the world is still accessible by the shard as it's all still connected spiritually. -
Exactly. In fact, looking at Kaladin's pose on the cover of WoR, it's even more flashy and impractical than Jasnah's.

stormlight archive Should All Parshmen Be Killed?
Spoolofwhool replied to Zennix's topic in Stormlight Archive
Because it would have required interfacing with the common people, something which wouldn't have worked. Note an important difference between how the Diagram works and the unacceptable plans that Taravangian made when he was extremely intelligent: The latter made plans which required the consent of the general populace, something which would've never worked as they would've never accepted his arguments. However the former, the Diagram, planned details which circumvented the population acceptance, and simply just forced events which manipulated the population into a specific set of actions using Szeth, and presumably other subterfuges. The important thing is that the general people are not consciously aware that someone is manipulating or forcing them towards a specific end goal. An edict to murder the parshmen would never have worked, and falls outside of unknown manipulation by being out in the open. The only way that the Diagram would've dictated the elimination of the parshmen would've been if it had called for a bunch of assassins to go around secretly killing all the parshman, and that would've been suspicious, and highly ineffective. Therefore, while the Diagram could warn of the parshmen becoming voidbringers, it couldn't prevent it from happening, short of preventing the Everstorm, as there would've been no way to convince everyone that the parshmen were a danger.- 29 replies

First of all, WoT has nothing to do with Cosmere. Secondly, I believe it has been directly confirmed that merging pieces of a shard back into a shard is possible. We've essentially seen this happen with Ruin and Preservation merging into Harmony.
-
While it's a shame that a lot of the awesome background is cut out, the thunderclast and the soldiers, the amount of space and prominence that Jasnah takes on the cover looks to be about equal to the amount of space and prominence that Kaladin takes on the cover of Words of Radiance, so I disagree with the argument that the cover is poorly choosing its object of prominence. While there is still the point that the overall spread of Words of Radiance has less prominent elements than the Oathbreaker full cover, keeping the format of a single character in prominence isn't something to criticize. Also, Kaladin's pose is just as much a "look how cool I am" as Jasnah's, (and is pretty good looking, though more rugged face) and in fact is less utilitarian than her's, so in my opinion, the argument is breaking down into character gender over artistic design.

Maybe, but I don't think so. Ten looks to be a pretty deep number on Roshar and possibly the Greater Roshar System. I really doubt sixteen will appear much or in any significant way because ten has already been indicated to be extremely significant in all levels. I don't think that sixteen being important in the Cosmere means that it will appear everywhere.

We have seen sixteen mentioned already in a death rattle. Whether or not it appears within the scope of the societal or magical levels of Roshar, I'm more doubtful. Whatever is causing the number ten, it appears to be more dominant than the general number sixteen in the Cosmere.

As I explained, both empty references indicate a strong chances that something Brandon said is missing. Add that reference, and "He was born as one" and "It is his race" make sense as part of the answer. Entirely possible, but I would still chalk up a good amount to the WoB being inaccurate, which is why I wouldn't say it is anywhere near confirmed that dragons are naturally immortal, especially considering that the something with confirmed wording, the letter, indicates more strongly otherwise. Possible as well, but still tenacious as an explanation. Honestly, I'm not seeing enough evidence to assume that dragons are naturally immortal, and more evidence that indicates that they aren't and Frost just achieved immortality by some other means. I'm curious though as to why you're pushing the "dragons are naturally immortal" line so hard though when the best evidence for it being true is a grammatically flawed statement that is more than likely missing a statement. Edit: Link to the post which convinced me that WoB is flawed. The person who convinced also provided a transcript of the WoB which indicates that something is in fact missing.

Good that you brought up that WoB. However, I'll point out, as was pointed out to me, that it isn't reliable on saying that he was born as an immortal, and doesn't actually appear to be saying that at all. Break down what it's talking about. "He's just functionally immortal": This is an adjective being used to describe Frost's state of being. "He was born as one": This is a statement indicating that Frost was born as some afore-mentioned noun. Put the two together and it becomes apparent that the second statement shouldn't be describing the first, and that there should be some other statement in-between. A missing statement is further indicated by the last statement, "It is a race." Obviously, "functionally immortal" is not a race. Therefore, there was probably something else Brandon said in the middle, regarding his race, that the person who paraphrased and submitted the WoB left out. This indicates nothing about him being naturally immortal. Fair point on the letter, but then this just further supports that Frost gained functional immortality somehow.

It's the letter which is believed to have been written by Hoid, and sent to Frost. By the wording, "essentially immortal" is a state the recipient reached, indicated that they didn't start in that state.

Actually, the letter indicates the contrary; the recipient was indicated to have achieved functional immortality somehow, meaning that they aren't naturally immortal. Unless of course the recipient isn't a dragon, which is entirely possible. Edit: It's been later confirmed that dragons are naturally unaging, so whatever "essentially immortal" that Hoid is referring to is something else about Frost.

I found the WoB that Nightblood isn't reducing the amount of investiture in the Cosmere and that it's remaining in the system: It was in my bookmarks. https://www.reddit.com/r/brandonsanderson/comments/3wtis8/new_wob_finite_amount_of_investiture/ Looks like I was smarter than I thought when I found that WoB. You need to read down to find the exact WoB, but I would read the whole thread.

Surgebinding - Magic Without Focus
Spoolofwhool replied to cometaryorbit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My opinion is that Honor created the Honorblades as a hack of the magic, bypassing the normal mechanics for granting surgebinding. When the sprens began to bond and form surgebinders, they were imitating the result, not the process. They attempted, and succeeded at, bonding to humans in such a way that it granted them the ability hold stormlight, and to use that stormlight to empower themselves, in addition to binding a pair of surges to their will. How the Honorblades surgebind is non-relevant, that they do is what the spren imitated.- 29 replies

Surgebinding - Magic Without Focus
Spoolofwhool replied to cometaryorbit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Based on the description of the mechanics surrounding the filter, I feel very strongly that it's describing the focus, as the mechanisms surrounding foci has been described very similarly. Note that how the power goes through the focus is how the Cosmere mechanics are manipulated in a manifestation of investiture.- 29 replies

Surgebinding - Magic Without Focus
Spoolofwhool replied to cometaryorbit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We have a WoB recently that states that surgebinding is performed by drawing the investiture through a filter made from Honor and Cultivation's power, which seems to be a description of a focus in action. From what we know of a system comprised of the surgebinder, the spren they are bonded to is formed from Honor and Cultivation's power, making it likely in my opinion that spren are the foci on Roshar. It also lines up with what we know of fabrials, as they hold spren as well in the gems, which is where the stormlight is changed to produce effects.- 29 replies
