  1. I know. Sci-fi, along with a lot of other fiction, really has ruined that definition for us.
  2. I think at one point Kaladin looks up at the sky, notices a point of light, and comments that it's Brainerd, otherwise known as Damnation. Could be wrong though.
  3. He uses those definitions because that's what sentience and sapience actually mean.
  4. It's a fair thought. We really lack a lot of information to make a definitive answer. The only thing we can be sure of is that the Oathpact is indirectly binding Odium, but that leaves a lot of ways it could do something.
  5. Thank you. I misunderstood his reason for repeating that you would have a medallion granting allomantic aluminum.
  6. I'm not seeing the connection between becoming less mentally stable and having a bit of the other person in you always with hemalugy. Do you have actual proof of this occurring because the example you've given has been explained as a known product of having holes jammed into your spiritweb as a result of the spike, which is a way, but not the only way of opening yourself to outside influences.
  7. When you say people, do you mean the main characters of Wax and Wayne? Because we don't actually know what the greater population of the Basin does and the main characters are not an accurate representation, unless you have some other reason to believe that people are aware of what Harmony has been doing. Also, I'm not sure why using kandra to communicate with world leaders is an issue. The last point I'm not sure where that's coming from. I can't recall any instance where he has actively moved to hide information. He definitely hasn't been giving out information when needed, since he's trying not to interfere. Once again, do you have any examples of Sazed directly communicating with people outside of Wax, because I can't recall any. Overall though, I agree that he isn't a very good god, in a sense. The definition of a god is fairly vague, though the one I like to use is "someone who embodies the belief of people through worship, generally possessing supernatural powers." Looking at that, that means the criteria for being a god in this case is how people believe him to act, and how closely he follows those beliefs. Now, Harmony is believed by the pathians to allow for the generation of the path with the most choices. I think he's done that pretty well, so in that sense he's a pretty good god. Looking at the other people, while they acknowledge his existence as a god, they seem to hold the same opinion of him, as someone who watches and allows free choice to propagate. Looking at Steris' reaction when Wax told VenDell to "tell Harmony" indicates that the survivorists really just see him as an entity out there, not really doing anything. Since he is essentially doing that, I'm not seeing an issue with his job at being a god. Yes, he's interfered at times, but largely those times, as far as we've seen, were to preserve people's free choice. If Bleeder had been left to tear apart the city, that would've taken away of lot of choices from people. Your argument that people would learn that he wasn't always a god is moot since he's told them that from day zero.
  8. @robardin Can you please explain why the power of aluminum allomancy is needed? There is no need to compound identity, it's a waste product, and there's no other reason to burn aluminum unless you want to waste of bunch of metals and metalminds. The Bands of Mourning granted allomantic powers.
  9. Spiritual identity in the scope of keying investiture to a person has nothing to do with the scope of defining them, as far as we know. It's just a marker, an indicator present in their spiritweb. Removing someone's identity doesn't change who you are as a person. Here's an example if you want one: If you steal someone's feruchemical power through hemalurgy, you gain access to their metalminds because you've stolen a copy of their identity key. That wouldn't change you into being more like them though, I believe. I don't think Bleeder became a slightly better person after she stole that terriswoman's steelrunning powers.
  10. Explain how you're storing aluminum feruchemical power into an aluminummind please. Shouldn't that go into the nicrosilmind of A, without a need for B at all?
  11. Spiritual identity related to encoding investiture is just a mark of the spiritual aspect. It's not related to one's cognitive sense of self. As a mental power, rioting and soothing appear to affect the cognitive, so no reason why they would change the spiritual identity.
  12. I'm just saying that's what he implied. He said that bones aren't that flexible and can't hold their shape and flesh is better, but the breath can't be recovered. Check chapter 46 for the exact quote.
  13. A pile of straw is not from something which was once sentient, nor is it still in a shape which approximates the intact remains of that once-sentient entity. That seems to be the main criteria. The amount of breaths required doesn't matter as you can create lifeless with a single breath. If I recall correctly, Vasher identifies the squirrel as being a lifeless, and since the definitions of type are defined by him, that makes it Type II. Also, Vasher never used human body when he was describing the types of awakened entities. Vivenna was the one to do so. Here are quotes on the matter: I think when Vasher says that Type IIIs have to be in an organic host, he's simplifying it down to what anyone can do. Also, something else he says does imply that awakening skeletons doesn't create lifeless, as the breath can be recovered.
  14. Possible. I don't think a spren would need a physical object to hide themselves normally though since the other nahel bond spren we see can hide their visibility from normal people. I suppose he could be trying to prevent other KR from seeing it, but I feel like there are other methods. In any case, judging by how people react to his mannerisms with the box, it's something he has had for a very long time, unlike the nahel bond which I think is fairly recent, so I doubt that the box is a result of the nahel bond, but he could still be using it in conjuction with the spren.
  15. The visions seem more cognitive than spiritual honestly. It's just the stormfather sticking a bunch of visions into his head. In any case, the point that Yata was making was not that person seeing a glimpse of the spiritual realm has to be consuming investiture, but that there has to be a consumption at some point. That's why the Dalinar argument doesn't work, since even if it is a glimpse into the spiritual realm, the Stormfather could be the one providing investiture, so we can't know if there is a consumption or not. In any case, what you're suggesting at the end with Renarin is exactly what Yata did suggest, that he's just receiving visions resulting from another entity peering into the spiritual realm, so I don't know why you're disagreeing. I was referring to mistborn details. The spoiler tags for First of the Sun are there, though it's usually easier if you actually label what the spoiler is for so people who have read the story know they can read it without fear. Thank you.
  16. Yeah, there's a point where the mechanics of the powers get handwavy. There's no reason why we can't try to break it down into a science as far as we can though since Brandon has intentionally set it up that way. There's no reason why we can't try to see if there is a way to explain the oddities or not. Also, do you have a source for the fact that a skimmer can't walk on water? I don't see a reason why they couldn't if they reduce their mass enough, though maintaining balance would be hard. In any case, most manifestations of investiture will grant additional side effects so that the user can use them to the a fuller capacity. Another example would be atium granting increased reaction time so that you can actually use the information from the foresight.
  17. You're assuming steelrunning has to do with increasing the force of the step and not just increasing the number of steps in a given period of time compared to normal. I think the latter is more likely, since Sazed has described it as an overall slowdown in movement. In addition, as you say, then there wouldn't need to be an increase in physical strength.
  18. I doubt any spren would want to bond Hoid.
  19. Mistborn spoilers Presumably the nahel bond is similar, while at the same time less invasive. Dalinar's example makes no sense. He wasn't looking at the future, he was just getting prerecorded visions. In addition, those visions were being given by a super-powerful investiture entity, so there's definitely a source of power for them to have occurred. The First of the Sun example was better, though please use spoilers on the information you state of external books.
  20. From the Coppermind: This is what I was referring to. Read the whole sentence next time please. Two through four are imprecise the only requirement that we know of is that two requires the body of something which was sentient while three and four require objects which are not the complete body of something which was sentient. We saw an awakened squirrel in Warbreaker and you ca probably create a type three entity from a piece of a once-sentient organism. Organic means that it had to have been part of something alive at one point. Plant matter can be awakened by anyone as well. Organic (presumably this definition):
  21. Yeah. The breath permanently sticking to the lifeless probably has to do with the body beforehand cognitively still seeing itself somewhat as a person, coupled with the remnants of the spiritual the body had in life. This does beg a couple of interesting questions. I wonder if you could make a lifeless out of a corpse which died due to spiritual damage such as hemalurgic theft or sprenblade strike. Also, what if you had the body of a sentient metal organism such as a robot? Lifeless robot maybe?
  22. Better return, but then you're requiring iron and steel as a constant input.
  23. Yes. So my original correction was correct then? Because the fact that it's metal has nothing to do with being a Type 4? Also, I feel like if you awakened a single bone it would be Type III.
  24. No reason why you can't. Hemalurgy can steal a lot more than just enhanced abilities. It's about stealing pieces of the soul, and animals have the same type of soul, just smaller. If human senses are encoded on their soul and can be stolen, no reason why platypus senses aren't and can't.
