  1. Ambition may just be the drive to act. Do Cultivation taking it up could make her be active than passive as a force. It would probably make Odium more dangerous.
  2. From Secret History. This moment is awesome for a lot of reasons, but being able to con an ancient force of destruction and entity? That’s pretty awesome. Particularly the reaction: He cons THREE different gods (more if we count the Elantrians) at various points in the novella, but this was best by far.
  3. I only knew the last because of Star Wars. Turns out that’s the source of Revan’s name, which I always thought was cool.
  4. Dominion seems to be about land, actually. So Odium plus Dominion might be Conquest. Or possibly Revanche, which has a more vengeful element to it. (The things you learn from Star Wars...)
  5. I don’t see them as opposites, so much as compliments. Ruin’s ‘opposite’ in the quadrant would be Endowment, as opposed to Preservation. But Ruin and Endowment aren’t true opposites, while Ruin and Preservation are. The Push/Pull I see as more active vs. more passive. Potential vs Kinetic, maybe? So Cultivation encourages people to become better, while Ruin is actively attempting to destroy. Internal/External has to with the intent. Ruin and Cultivation are external forces, while everything is naturally ‘endowed’ with certain attributes. Even in Allomancy, Push and Pull aren’t always opposites. Tin and Pewter aren’t, for example. And others can do the same things in opposing ways, like Brass and Zinc. I think, because Scadrial was created by its Shards post-Shattering, the magic systems of Scadrial reflect the new nature of the Cosmere. The other worlds already existed, so they merely adapted to the changes, while Scadrial was created entirely from them.
  6. I think it may have been something like “I will protect even those who hurt me most.” Because he truly doesn’t hate his cousin, but the Lopen has hurt him deeply. So hate doesn’t really make sense, but hurt does.
  7. Theory: The four Allomantic quadrants correlate to the Dawnshard quadrants, and the Shardic groupings. I mean: four groups of four for a total of sixteen? Where else have we seen that? Do the Shard groups have internal and external Shards? Pushing and pulling? If Cultivation, Endowment and Ruin are three parts of the ‘Change’ group, then there’s a very good argument for it. E internal; R & C external. R pulling; E & C pushing. I think this group would probably match the physical quadrant. The other likely possible threesome is Honor, Devotion and Dominion. H & De would be internal; Do would be external. H would be pulling and De would be pushing. I’m not sure whether Do would be pulling or pushing. They’d correspond to the Spiritual/ Enhancement quadrant. This grouping would have a Dawnshard about bonds. Unity? I think Ambition and Autonomy are together. If Odium is telling the truth about being ‘Passion’ then it goes here too. Assuming they form a three parts of four: Am & O are internal; Au is external. Am is pulling and O & Au are pushing. This group would probably correlate to the Cognitive/Mental group. This Dawnshard probably has something to do with drive or will. Preservation would be the only known member of the fourth group (unless Odium is actually ‘Void’). P would be external pushing, and the quadrant would correlate to the Temporal/Hybrid group. This Dawnshard probably has something to do with existence/survival. (Possibly irrelevant, because of two feruchemical metals being swapped, but the Hybrid grouping of Feruchemy includes elements necessary for survival - air, food, health, and the will to survive.) If I’m right about all this, then: Change: Cultivation, Endowment, Ruin. Missing: Internal Pulling Shardic intent. Unify?: Honor, Devotion, Dominion. Missing: External Shardic intent; push/pull status unknown. Act?: Ambition, Autonomy, Odium? Missing: External Pulling Shardic intent. Survive?: Preservation. Missing: Internal pushing and pulling and External pulling. Note: I see Pulling as more active and Pushing as more passive. So Ruin ‘pulls’ things toward destruction, while Cultivation ‘pushes’ them to accomplish. I also think ‘pushing’ Shards may be better at seeing the future, but that that is further varied by intent. Thoughts?
  8. Well, seeing as the Allomantic quadrants probably do have some correlation to the Dawnshard splits... this wouldn’t surprise me at all.
  9. Seeing as the Dawnshard appear to have been about creation, destroy is likely part of change. Hoid probably held the Dawnshard Preservation is associated with. I think this Dawnshard is associated with the Temporal category of the Allomantic quadrants. Worth noting that the Hybrid category of Feruchemy includes all elements needed for survival (air, nutrition, health, and determination (Ie. the will to live)) though we don’t know if that was intentional, since something got swapped there at some point. (I forgot what.)
  10. Maybe like this? Or this one: It’s shattering - not shattered.
  11. She was also kind of distracted earlier. She only notices once she begins to relax.
  12. The Borgias weren’t any worse than most other Popes of the time. Possibly better; Rodrigo instituted quite a few reforms. Part of the reason he gets such a bad rep is because Rodrigo helped the Spanish Jewish refugees and was possibly born Jewish himself. His successor, a rabid anti-Semite, didn’t like that very much. Oh, and the maybe was born Jewish thing was the ‘proof’ that Rodrigo was evil. And considered one of the worst things about him. Maybe when discussing ‘evil’ people we should excise examples that were painted as such due to anti-Semitism? Edited to add: I’m not saying he was a good person. He wasn’t. But he was no worse than many of the Popes preceding him. He also seems to have died sincerely repentant. He was painted as evil by the following Popes because: A: Julius 2 was an anti-Semite, thought Rodrigo was Jewish and didn’t like that Rodrigo helped the Jews. B: As Alexander V, Rodrigo tried to institute some significant reforms in the Church and subsequent Popes didn’t like that. C: So subsequent Popes could draw attention away from their own excesses by using the Borjas as a convenient scapegoat. D: Rodrigo was honest, and admitted his kids were his, instead of claiming they were his ‘niece’ and ‘nephew’ as other Popes did.
  13. I had a theory where Kaladin is rushing to save his family, only to find the whole place caving in. He has to choose between trying to save someone he can’t help or saving those he can. After the battle he learns that Lirin became a Stoneward and used Cohesion to protect everyone. (Also, since Stonewards are usually infantry, I love the idea of one being a pacifist.) So his family was safe all along, but Kal - and we - had no way of knowing it.
  14. I found out about the coin one here on the Shard, actually. The coin one was held by Shire post mint, and they sell the coins. I don’t know if these are also available on Brandon’s store.
  15. I can definitely see that. The thing is, Odium is consistently associated with the void. And when people give him their pain, they stop feeling. I think we need to know more about Odium before we can classify him, honestly.
  16. Can someone tell me where to find it? I saw it mentioned, but don’t know where it is?
  17. I agree that Honor and Dominion and Devotion are a group. All involve bonds: Devotion is the bonds of people; Dominion is the bond with Land; and Honor is the bonds of the self. Their Dawnshard would be about bonds. Unity? Preservation does not fit in this group. Endowment, Cultivation, and Ruin all seem to be a group and would be tied to Rysn’s Dawnshard. They’re all change, and I think you’ve got the types right. But I don’t think Ambition goes with them. I hypothesize that Ambition and Autonomy are in a group, and their Dawnshard may be about will. Ambition is the Will to grow. Autonomy is the Will to be free. Will? I further hypothesize that Preservation and Odium are in a group. Both have shown elements of the unchanging void. Odium is the unchanging self. Those who bond to him, who give him their pain, become void and are unable to grow. Preservation is the world frozen. It is the void where time does not move. I suspect both are connected to the idea of eternity. Nothing changes in the void.
  18. I only backed ten dollars, which is the same as what the ebook would have cost me. Less, because no NYS taxes. LOL! So next time one of these things happen, you’ll know to check the tiers. This is the second kickstarter I joined. The other was for my boxings (which are awesome, btw.) The Final Empire The Basin I didn’t do the highest tier here either. I went high enough to get the coins I wanted (12 TFE and 12 Era 2) + the leather bag. The next I’ll join will probably be for the Wax and Wayne books. I can let you know about it when it happens, if you’d like.
  19. Need I say more? Going to read now...
  20. A fellow synesthete! I ‘see’ certain emotions and sensations as colors. I can ‘hear’ some of them too. Hear is really the wrong word though. It’s more ‘I feel sonic vibrations’? (Or maybe I’m a human who can attune to the Rhythms?) Kind of wish I could turn the sound? off now though; I’m stressed, so I keep feeling a rapid beat, like someone has their bass turned up too high. Other perceptions tend to vary; certain musical pieces cause me to ‘feel’ different sensations and I can ‘hear’ some visual stimuli. I also ‘feel’ temperature changes when I experience strong emotions. Only the first two are consistent though. It also seems like my synesthesia has gotten weaker as I got older. But that may just be my perception, or I’ve gotten better at ignoring it.
  21. He’d never agree to it.
  22. General Brandon, maybe? Vin’s biggest fear is being abandoned, so make her feel alone? Kell is the tricky one; he’s a neurological psychopath and doesn’t fear very much. The only time we’ve really seen him afraid is when he’s about to lose someone he loves. Which means the only way to beat Kell is to find someone he loves and endanger them. Ouch. Kell is probably the most dangerous as an Epic. He’s already a psychopath, and then you give him a double dose of psychopathy... odds are he kills the people he loves so they can’t be used against him. And then just leaves his empathy off, leaving him with no weaknesses. Elend fears becoming like his father. So he’d be a powerless Epic, lol. Every time he starts hitting the Epic mindset, his fear kicks in and he loses his powers. Spook fears being inadequate and useless. So you’d have to make him feel weak. I’m not sure what Marsh fears most. Nor Saze.
  23. Ah, got it! Thanks for the clarification!
  24. I thought it was the 80s time period that was the second trilogy?
