  1. Can you add Shai to this? Because she’d love to join them...
  2. It was Kelsen’s fault in the end. Most things were, according to Marene anyway. Kelsen would argue but, well, more often then not his sister was right. This one though... This one was just as much Marene’s fault as it was Kelsen’s. It had been her idea, after all. It had been a perfectly ordinary weekend until then. Ashren, their cousin, had come by and the two boys were going at it with their guitars, playing along to their favorite bands and blasting lyrics at full volume. Never one to be outdone, Marene tried to drown them out with notes high enough to shatter glass. “What are you singing?!” Mrs. Eld had been an opera singer once, and her powerful voice brought a sudden end to the battle of the bands. Unfortunately for the cousins, that meant the harsh metal lyrics were all the more audible. “Put a spike through her heart-“ Kelsen shoved the needle away with a sharp screech! but the damage was already done. He didn’t have to look up to know his mother was glaring. “It’s just words, Ma.” ”Words,” Mrs. Eld snapped, “have power. I’ve raised you to be good Survivorists, and I won’t have that,” she shot the record a disgusted look, “trash in my home.” She snatched the black disc from her son’s hands, snapping the hard plastic in one sharp movement. ”Ma!” Kelsen protested. “That cost a whole months allowance!” Mrs. Eld was unmoved. “Then next time spend it on something worthy.” ”But the music’s great,” Ashren protested, realizing his mistake too late, flinching as his aunt turned her withering glare on her nephew. “And I’m sure my sister will be delighted to hear it.” Ashren winced again. “Why don’t you find some noise with better lyrics?” ”They don’t make ‘em,” Kelsen muttered, looking mournfully at the broken pieces. It had cost him a whole month’s allowance too. He’d known buying it was risky, but the music was amazing! It was sharp, and wild, and nothing at all like the classic arias his parents had had him practicing since before he could remember. This was something entirely new, something for his generation! Not that his parents would understand. All they heard were the words, which were, admittedly, pretty bad, glorifying murder and Ironeyes and Hemalurgy. Kelsen wasn’t too fond of them himself, but the music was worth it. His mother disagreed, leaving him with a stern warning about what would happen if she caught him listening to such ‘trash’ again. “I bet she’d like it if it had Survivorist lyrics,” Kelsen said crossly after his mother left and the door was safely shut, “even if they were about how he killed the nobles or robbed people or was tortured in the Pits.” ”Yeah,” Ashren agreed. “Wish someone’d make some.” ”Why don’t you?” Marene snapped, flicking her long, dark hair back. “Better then wasting more of my practice time.” Marene wanted to be a famous singer, like her mother had been, and that meant a lot of practice. Kelsen had a good voice too, but he would rather play his guitar. “Because-“ Kelsen paused abruptly, objection silenced as his sister’s words penetrated. “Why not?” he said slowly, turning the idea over in his mind. The more he thought about it, the better it seemed. “Why not?” And so The Survivor’s Crew was born. (You are allowed to critique this, because apparently I need to give permission now.)
  3. Lol! You know, when Brandon says ‘in any other story he’d be a villain’ he really wasn’t kidding! I now need to pitch Mistborn to someone with that description of Kell, finishing off with ‘so that’s the hero.’ Completely agree with you about stick. He’s... just a stick. And Shallan is bad at sweet talking.
  4. For some reason this double posted... an hour after I posted the original. No clue how or why. Can somemod delete the extra, please?
  5. I’m not sure where this is supposed to go, so I’m putting it here: Challenge: Write a fanfic set in Era 2, where Kell drags Marsh to a showing of a play based on TFE so they can make fun of it - and remember old friends. Bonus: Dox and Ham are cast as women. Brandon makes a cameo as the playwrite. Era 2 main cast characters are present. Sazed gets dragged into the fun. Challenge 2: Write a modern age Scadrial fanfic involving Survivorist metal band (think Christian Metal) called the Survivor’s Crew. Bonus: Kell is the secret backer funding the whole thing. The Band members dress like crew members. Have actual music for the band. They don’t only do heavy metal. Write lyrics for the songs.
  6. The band is run by a guitarist named Kelsen, and his younger sister Marene, who is a soprano. They play Kell and Vin (used to be Kell and Mare, but that got too weird.) Kelsen’s girlfriend Domique plays the keyboard and has the role of Mare (which works much better.) Their cousin, Ashren, plays Marsh and is the bassist. For Elend they recruited Marene’s friend from band, Renek, who plays drums. Ashren recruited Andryl, a Terris Pathian, for Sazed. He plays rhythm guitar. Kelsen’s best friend Endel is their manager and sound tech. He also plays a theremin and a classic guitar. When he’s onstage he’s Dox. They do have an organist, Vinouex, who Renek met in church. He plays Breeze when he joins them. He brought his flutist, South Scadrian, girlfriend Jenah, to play Alriane. Another of Marene’s band friends, Laine, plays a sax and Ham. Nesier was a blind kid Kelsen met at a church fundraiser. He plays Spook and a viola. He introduced the band to Razen, his counselor at his camp, the band’s oldest member. Razen plays a clarinet, trumpet, and harp (not all at once!) He was recruited to play Clubs, due to his limp and age. Then Jenah brought her little sister, Mart, to play accordion and Beldre. And Andryl discovered his neighbor, Tynsen, plays the glockenspiel, so now she’s Tindwyl. The band members aren’t all onstage at the same time. But they do all play. Except for Andryl, Tynsen, Jenah and Mart all the members are devout Survivorists. The former two are Pathians, and the latter two are from an offshoot Survivor/Sovereign combination faith that was created when Scadrial figured out the two were the same. At an early point Kelsier discovered them and started funding the band. Only Kelsen, Marene, and Endel know their silent backer’s identity. Core band: Kelsen: lead electric guitar, vocalist, Kelsier (Survivorist) Marene: vocalist, lute, Vin (Survivorist) Domique: keyboard, Mare (Survivorist) Ashren: Bassist, Marsh (Survivorist) Renek: Drummer, Elend (Survivorist) Andryl: Rhythm guitar, Sazed (Pathian) Endel: classic guitar, theremin, sound tech, manager, Dox (Survivorist) Additional members: Vinouex: organist, Breeze (Survivorist) Jenah: flutist, Alriane (Survivor-Sovereignist) Laine: saxophonist, Ham (Survivorist) Nesier: viola (and other types of violins), Spook (Survivorist) Razen: clarinetist, trumpeter, harpist, Clubs (Survivorist) Mart: accordionist, Beldre (Survivor-Sovereignist) Tynsen: glockenspiel, Tindwyl (Pathian) Others: Kelsier: (mostly) Silent backer
  7. I know people who went through things like that. They’re quite happy now, with multiple generations of descendants. Well, they were before NYC decided to recreate the ghettos. But still happier than they were during the Holocaust and the fruits of their labor? Their children and grandchildren got to grow up free. Or as my great-grandmother would say, looking at three generations of her descendants, “Hitler didn’t win.” When someone has tried to kill you, living and thriving is the greatest triumph and the sweetest fruit. Spook, Beldre, Ham, Mardra, Breeze and Alriane got to raise their families in peace. They built a better society than they came from. Those were their triumphs and their children and grandchildren their fruits. A life without fear where their descendants could THRIVE. And Marsh and Saze get to watch as the world they fought for thrives. And Kell? Well, I’ve no doubt he’s smiling.
  8. Era 2 was kind of an accident. The originally planned era 2 (now era 3) will probably be darker. I didn’t say I thought their lives were perfect. But I do think they enjoyed the new world, each in their own way. And Marsh would be unhappy even if things were perfect, because that’s just his personality. He’s a pessimist; he’d be miserable if he couldn’t be unhappy. (I know people like this; they don’t make sense if you don’t know them.) I’m glad you like my headcannon! @Use the Falchion But sometimes you get The Clone Wars TV show, Secret History, Mystery of the Emblem or Thracia 776. And the old EU did a better job of keeping the characterizations intact for the original cast. Particularly Zahn’s books.
  9. My headcannon is that Brandon’s script is an in-world movie/play. Kell goes to every version of TFE that he can find/get to. Marsh claims it’s his brother’s ego; Kell claims it’s because it’s funny seeing how much they get wrong. The truth, which neither will admit, is that Kell misses the crew and this is his way of mourning them and keeping them alive. Also, at some point someone comes up with the Scadrian version of Christian heavy metal, and calls a band ‘The Survivor’s Crew.’ Kell is their silent backer. And yes, Marsh gets dragged, protesting, to all the shows, which he enjoys far more than he’d ever admit.
  10. Spook may very well have lived beyond his rulership, and he probably didn’t need to rule as long as he did. I think he enjoyed ruling. Marsh is just one of those people who is happy when unhappy, if that makes sense. He’s really the ‘crotchety old grandpa’ type character, without being an actual grandpa. Those types of characters often are dour, and seemingly always unhappy and never satisfied. But they’re actually much happier than they appear. Marsh is a pessimist. He’s never going to be able to ‘enjoy’ things the way an optimist does. His brain keeps pointing out the flaws. But he definitely seems to be happier than he was, and I think he is enjoying himself to the extent that he allows himself to do so. And every once in a while Kell drops in to annoy Marsh into laughing. And to drag him to the theatre. “Oh, you’re coming. They cast Dox as woman - it’s going to be great!” Personally, I like the info drops. There’s still plenty of room to explore around them. And I especially like them when they agree with me... lol!
  11. Indications are that CS get ‘stuck’ at the age where they died. I theorized a while ago that their souls ‘remember’ that they’re supposed to be dead, and the dead don’t get older. My reasoning may be wrong, but CS like Kell do seem to have a measure of immortality.
  12. Not entirely, actually. Could you expand on it? I have an NVLD, so I don’t always get subtext. To me it seems Spook eventually came into his own as ruler and enjoyed a good life. You don’t rule for 100 odd years without getting some enjoyment from your job. Kelsier is just the type of person who finds something to enjoy in (nearly) all situations. I think he’s been having a lot of fun on ‘new’ Scadrial. Marsh is the exact opposite of his brother. Everything can be perfect and he’d still be overly grim and morose. He’s not a naturally happy person. I think he does enjoy it more than he’ll admit though. He does seem a bit happier in W&W’s time, and I doubt Kell would allow Marsh to make himself completely miserable. Besides, they’ll have movies soon. Do you really think Kell isn’t going to enjoy a theatrical performance of The Final Empire? (He probably goes to all the plays - and drags Marsh along so he has someone he can laugh with about the inaccuracies. Marsh... enjoys these outings far more than he’ll ever admit.)
  13. Spook apparently has a big family, and lives a long time before he steps down, so I think he enjoys it. And I find it hard to believe Kell didn’t enjoy the new world. Marsh likely does too, though his personality means he’d have trouble admitting it.
  14. He obviously wasn’t hiding it from the Southerners, because he had his scars on full display. He also has WAY too much ego to pretend to be someone he hates. The North is... a much bigger question. Kell may have intentionally misled regarding his identity... but then why use the spear imagery at all? (It was a pretty big tip off.) Not to mention, if he’s not covering his arms, he’s not dying his hair. So all someone needs to do is discover the Sovereign was a blond... or had scars on his arms. And that’s if his personality doesn’t give it away first. (How I figured it out.) I honestly think it’s more likely that Kell used a pre-existing myth to his own advantage. He doesn’t seem to have created the myth himself, as he took ten years or so to come back, then spent 60 in the South. He could have had Spook do it though. It’s worth noting that we haven’t seen all the memories in the Coppermind, so Brandon could be allowing us to assume X when it’s really Y. He’s done this before, and I’m suspicious. It’s just... too straight forward? The Temple was probably intended to bring North and South together, as it ultimately did. They were both primed to seek it out. And Kell is probably still wearing the bracers everyone thought they were looking for... if he really is a feruchemist now, he’ll need them.
  15. Kelsier is a psychopath and a megalomaniac. He has committed multiple homicides and atrocities. He’s a thief and a conman, and he has several cultures worshipping him as a deity. He raised a rebellion and took down an empire for revenge - and plan A was to rule it. (He ended up having to go with plan B.) He manipulates a god into making him immortal. He nearly murdered his daughter’s lover. He intentionally allowed thousands of people to die for the sake of a con. He offers immortality to an impressionable youth who looks up to him to convince the boy to study Hemalurgy, all so Kell can return to life. The fact that he’s considered a HERO tells you just how good of a conman he is...
  16. My dream mistcloak is made with silk, organza and tulle. I’ve always assumed the real ones used a mixture of these materials from the descriptions. Those materials will cause the cloak to float around you.
  17. Not for or against any theory, but Kell was willing to kill a member of the rebellion (Bilg) to make a point. Also, Kell would have been angry if he knew Breeze was noble. Although, there’s this: Brandon Sanderson Yeah, I'm going to RAFO that-- Not quite where-- I'll just RAFO it. I'll just RAFO it. Kelsier is not on Roshar, but obviously that's not what you're asking, which is what I thought you were. Of course, there’s this too: ccstat If Kelsier (when Vin knew him) were to join one of the Rosharan secret societies, which one would he choose? Brandon Sanderson He would become part of the Ghostbloods, most likely, and would be in charge of them within a year. And, when asked if Kell was leading the Ghostbloods, Brandon laughed and offered a RAFO card.
  18. Well... Also, Spook, Breeze, Ham, Marsh, Mardra, Beldre, Alriane and Demoux made it.
  19. If he sees Wax pulling a gun, he still has no idea what it does. He’s never seen a weapon like it. He doesn’t see a bullet, because it’s aluminum, so he assumes it’s a blunt weapon. Now, can Wax shoot before Kell pulls the gun from his hand? I think so. (Weirdly, this is a situation where Electrum is better than Atium.) Wax gets ONE shot. After that Kell has pulled/pushed the gun from his hand and escaped. I think Kell gets grazed, not killed. He’s trying to push/pull the weapon, so Wax’s aim is slightly off, and Kell is primed to dodge and instinct has him doing so at the ear-drum bursting noise. Bullets are fast though, so I think he does get hit. He flees because his eardrums just burst, more than due to the bullet itself. Waits for his head to stop ringing, circles back, kills Wax, and takes the gun. To add to this... Wax is using an aluminum bullet, because he knows who he’s facing. He’s not aiming to kill because, well, he KNOWS WHO HE’S FACING. He’s hoping to get home without wrecking the timeline TOO badly...
  20. It would be more likely to a Luke Skywalker - almost there, but pulling back at the last moment.
  21. It was a little more extreme with Dalinar though, and the word Ascend was used in context, so I thought it was a better example.
  22. When asked about Kell leaving Scadrial, we were told that having a body helps. He was not a world hopper at the end of SH. BoM is a little more ambiguous, as he’s had 300 years to figure it out... and he has a body. Brandon has said that we haven’t SEEN Kell off world, and that it would be difficult for him to leave because he’s kind of like a Spren. But the Ghostbloods may have figured out the answer to that problem... and we haven’t SEEN Thaidakar either. Questioner Did Kelsier leave Scadrial when he went to the Ire fortress? Brandon Sanderson I consider him not having left, but being very close to leaving. He couldn't have actually gotten off-planet with the way that he existed at that point. So, no, he did not leave Scadrial. At least the sphere of influence of Scadrial. Questioner So even though he’s tied to Scadrial could he go to the Cognitive Realm of other worlds? Brandon Sanderson He would have trouble getting to another planet, being a Cognitive shadow like he was. Questioner So is there some particular thing that somebody would need to have to be able to move between the realms? Brandon Sanderson A body is helpful. Depends on what their ties are and things like that. Not always, but yeah. Questioner Have we seen Kelsier outside of Mistborn yet, and will we see him outside of Mistborn? Brandon Sanderson No you have not. And RAFO, but realize, he is-- The way Investiture works, you would consider him similar to how you would consider a spren. It's gonna be hard for him to get off-world. Questioner It also means that he can still-- He gets kind of close, he gets really close-- Brandon Sanderson I considered him still-- Questioner Still on this side. Brandon Sanderson Yeah, but he got close to the line. But I would say he did not get off [Scadrial]. Questioner So it's gonna be hard. Brandon Sanderson Yes. The real reason this has a possibility is because the Ghostbloods function a LOT like Kell’s crew. He’s also the one most likely to come up with this from the characters we know. This feels like one of Kell’s gammons, just like the whole Sovereign thing did. The third thing is that we are specifically told that Thaidakar is a title, NOT a name, but it is often used as though it was a name, as in Master Thaidakar. And Kell has two different titles that are used as names: Survivor and the Sovereign. Particularly the former; Lord Survivor is a fairly common epithet. That’s honestly the thing that makes me most suspicious. Other characters use false names, but only on Scadrial have we seen epithets act as names - and only Kell has had that odd combination of title + epithet used regularly. The fact that only one character has used that particular combination regularly, all other character come from his world, and it was SPECIFICALLY pointed out to us - that’s suspicious. The Returned do do something similar (see Warbreaker the Peaceful) and the direct connections between Roshar and Nalthis makes a Returned a more likely culprit. But it IS a very suspicious phrasing.
  23. Well, we’ve seen what happens with Spren bonds... particularly when those Spren are very large concentrations of Investiture... Dalinar did kinda Ascend a little that one time...
  24. Critiques are welcome, btw., so long as they’re constructive.
