Inktober: Radiant Assassins
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Kingsdaughter613's topic in Sanderson Fan Works
Not a picture yet, but I’ve decided Shay is Thaylen and Edward is Iri. Haytham is half-Alethi and half-Iri. Connor is half-Horneater, 1/4 Alethi and 1/4 Iri. For some reason Haytham did not inherit much (any?) of his father’s blond hair. Maria is Vedan, Arno is Alethi. Altaïr is Shin. Lucy and Desmond live in the distant future, so don’t necessarily match any current race. I haven’t decided on the other Assassin/Templar races yet.- 9 replies

If you needed to impersonate a statue, storing all your speed is a great cheat.
-
Yes. I think between Stormlight 5 and 6. It has to be written before Era 3 Mistborn.
-
What I get out of all this: Brandon confuses DC and Marvel? Oh, the horror... (Watchers are Marvel.) Also:
-
Did they? Endowment may well be playing a VERY long game... She certainly seems to think she has things well in hand...

No, it’s not. Tolkien said so. Also, Cano didn’t slaughter the dwarves for it, which is a pretty good indication. HOME can be read in any order. Thankfully. Morgoth’s Ring is one of my favorites, after the Lays. Lay of Leithian. Which is the story of Beren and Luthien. Yes, it’s confusing. It means Release from Bondage, supposedly. Fingolfin fights Morgoth 1on1, and permanently wounded him, which I thought pretty awesome. And you really feel Elrond, Elros and Earendil did nothing? What about Aragorn? (I refuse to even TRY counting the greats, but he counts!) Also, Fingon did rescue Maedhros. And Galadriel did plenty! Telperion was the tree. Phanaikeluth translates to mirror (essentially) which is pretty accurate! Round world is that the world was always round, and the flat world is a myth. Why do you think Feanor did not kill Amrod? (Aside from not having read the Shibboleth?)
-
HOME is Histories of Middle Earth. There are thirteen of them. Getting ahold of Morgoth’s Ring was a pain, and I still don’t have all of them. That dude is Maglor, lol. I meant elven singer from the Lay of Leithian. That’s why I named those three. Dairon is said to be the best of the three... but he may also have written the lay... You don’t have a favorite Arafinweon or Nolofinweon? Glorfindel is a Noldorin lord who has golden-blond hair, something only Indis’ descendants were said to had. Hence the ‘he’s Lalwen or Findis’’ opinion. Gildor names himself Gildor Inglorion in LotR. Inglor was Finrod. He’s not Finrod’s kid. So who is he? Gil Galad has two state’s fathers: Findecano (Fingon) and Artaresto (Orodreth.) The latter is generally held to be more accurate and Chris admitted he made a mistake in the published Silm. However, Tolkien also considered the possibility that Gil Galad was a grandson of Feanor... Do you think Feanor killed Amrod? Do you prefer round world or flat world cosmology? Favorite name for the moon? The sun? Yes;Round (I know, I’m weird); Phanaikeluth; Atharaigas (the Valarin names are the most accurate.)

I think it’s because everyone on Scadrial is born with a bond. They’re all splinters of Preservation, as Preservation’s investiture is what grants Sentience. Because of this, Scadrians may not follow the normal rules. If the bond with Preservation is strong enough, they can become Alomancers. I have no clue about Feruchemy, but it may not need a bond, as it’s fueled somewhat by the pre-existing one with Preservation (although the power is a manifestation of both Scadrian shards.) The power is also entirely end-neutral. Hemalurgy grants power by creating a bond between the recipient and the torn fragment of another’s soul. It’s most evident in the Kandra, who achieve sentience this way. The initial tearing of the Spirit Web may also create a temporary bond just prior, but I’m not so certain. More likely, is the intent to destroy creates a temporary bond with Ruin.

Lol! There’s just so. Much. Stuff. Like, every time I think I’m getting somewhere... nope, there’s five more essays I haven’t seen or an interview I never heard of, or a random letter sent to a recently deceased colleague that’s JUST been discovered... Well, he wanted to write a mythology, and so he did. Which HOME book is your favorite? Also, which child of Finwe? Which Feanarion? Nolofinweon? Arafinweon? Grand-Finweon in general? Who do you think is Gil Galad’s father? How do you explain Gildor? Do you think Glorfindel is one of Finwe’s grandkids (via the girls?) Who is the best singer, Dairon, Macalaure, or Tinfang Gellion? My answers: Lays of Beleriand; Nolo; Macalaure; Findecano or Itarille; Finderatto. Elrond and Elros (great-great-great grand-Finweons) and their dad Earendil, also Glorfindel (see below); Artaresto; Finderato adopted him; yes, through Lalwen; Macalaure, but Dairon is the better bard. Cano overpowers his instrument. Tinfang is the best musician. Dairon blends both aspects best. I don’t meet enough fellow Tolkien fans.

When was that ruling group established?

And why is there a picture of one on the Odium card in the Stormlight Archive game? But only the special shiny card? -
Again: Vin and Elend wanted to go Beyond. Kell is still around and causing trouble. Saze lied (badly) about being unable to bring him back because... Kelsier. An astonishing amount can be explained by ‘because Kelsier.’ Or as Brandon put it: “I know I said he wouldn't come back, but . . . well, he's Kelsier. He doesn't listen to what I say. He just does what he wants.” So it was Spook, Breeze, Ham, Beldre, Alriane, Mardra, Ten Soon, Marsh and Kelsier... and Sazed, of course.

Noldorin version of Morgoth. Morgoth is S(Th)indarin. I’ve also seen it spelled Moringotho. (Possibly a thorn issue.) Also Morikotto. Either Tolkien couldn’t decide on a translation, or Feanor came up with multiple variants. Melkore (two dots over the e) is an older variant. Also: Bauglir. And Belegur and Belegurth. The latter two are related but the first is not, despite the seeming similarities... Oh, and Melkor should be spelled Melcor due to Tolkien deciding to eliminate the K near the end. All Cs are hard. Did I mention we Tolkien fans are crazy? And that Tolkien’s characters have lots of names?

Lol! Aren’t we all? Especially people who read as much of HOME as they can get ahold of... I love the Shard so much, but true Tolkien fans can make us look like wimps. Learning two dialects of a functional con-Lang? Why not? 13 books of HOME, the Silm, the letters, the Children of Hurin? Sure! Oh and LotR and the Hobbit? Please, that’s the bare minimum for entry. You only watched the movies.... Begone foul spawn of Moringotto! Be banished to the Void beside your dark master and his servant Sauron! (Or Thauron. Or Gorthaur, but that’s usually tagged onto the former. Used to be Mairon, but that was before. Also called himself Annatar for a bit. Yes, every Tolkien character has, like, ten names. Yes, of course I know them all offhand. I am a fan...)

Day 8: Dramatic and First Civilization The Tranquiline Apple (Ie. The Apple of Eden) showing the Rosharan system. Weirdly, most of the people seeking one of these has no clue what an Apple is... in this ‘verse. I think Altaïr may have been Shin. The Apple is made of copper. And it may be older than Ashyn... I always found the scenes where the Apple activated to be pretty dramatic.- 9 replies

Day 7: Crystal and Redemption (yes, I know I’m late) Kassandra offers Deimos, bonded to Yelig-Nar, a chance at Redemption in the form of a perfect gemstone. He does not accept. You can’t see Kass’ broken fabrial spear because it’s behind her back. Kass is a Dustbringer in this ‘verse. I’m changing when Kass and Alex live: the siblings now live during the first Desolation.- 9 replies

A-aluminum is a purifier. It’s use won’t be a big deal until the Cosmere really starts overlapping.

Just for Fun: Mistborn Disney Playlist
Kingsdaughter613 replied to MasterGhandalf's topic in Mistborn
Yes, but the song is really more reminiscent of the mobs of the early 1790s France. I think the right music might be the orchestral suite from execution scene in Hunchback of Notre Dame. Also, better than Through Heaven’s Eyes, the song where Dmitri teaches ‘Anna’ to play the role of Anastasia. (Can’t remember the name) Vin should sing Moana’s song throughout WoA. For HoA: Once Upon a December when Vin and Elend are at the ball. The nostalgic elements of that song are perfect. Bald Mountain from Fantasia for the fight between Vin and Ruin (or Duel of the Fates from SW) followed by the song that follows it in Fantasia (I don’t recall the name) as Saze ascends.- 10 replies

Disappointment in Era 2 - Spoilers for Mistborn Era 2
Kingsdaughter613 replied to E-Harmony's topic in Mistborn
You deserve an upvote, but I’m all out... You put my feelings into words for me. Mistborn is home. -
Jasnah would call them very powerful pieces of investiture made sentient via bonding with a mortal mind. Or a very unusual type of Spren.

Seeing as Kell is either Fullborn or can fake it really well, plus 300+ years of experience, that’s likely to a curbstomp battle if it happened. I think Kell loses the first time he faces a gun. He just... has no idea what it is. He can’t take a precautions. And TFE Kell doesn’t know aluminum can’t be pushed - and it doesn’t have Atium shadows either. Not to mention, he’s burning tin so the sound completely destroys his ear drums. Pewter enhanced reflexes may allow Kell to survive the first shot relatively intact at which point the situation changes drastically. NOW he knows that 1: this is a projectile weapon and 2: it shoots something fast and un-pushable and 3: this isn’t something he’s facing without more information. He gets out of there FAST. Wax gets knifed in the back later that night, and Saze is promptly set to reverse engineering the strange weapon. Two weeks later, when Kell can hear again, he hires a blacksmith. The Rebellion is considerably more successful with guns.

It’s fun for me. Much easier than trying to learn Noldorin Quenya, with and without the Feanorion variant, and I occasionally do that too. (Quenya grammar is HARD!) The Rosharan names were the easiest, because I always pronounced them correctly.
-
Aona is Ay - Oh- nah. No one gets that right because the Aonic pronunciations (double vowels) are unique. Once you get used to it it’s pretty easy though. I always pronounced Jasnah with a Y, and Kharbranth and Kholinar with the Kh, but that’s because I know enough Hebrew to recognize a Semitic inspired con-language when I see it. Amusingly enough, I’m not sure Brandon can pronounce it correctly. A lot of English speakers can’t. I pronounce Kaladin as Kah-lah-din, like Aladdin, same as you. Again, this is due to Alethi being a Semitic language, so I pronounce it accordingly. I actually pronounce Szeth as closer to Tzeth, using the Tz sound. I had to teach myself to do the French pronunciations for Scadrians. THEN I had to train myself to think of the names that way. Now I can’t stop doing it. Kell’s was the hardest, as it’s an unusual sound combination in French. (Denier being one of the few words that uses it.) Also, you need to swallow the L. Fortunately, I had some RL French speakers to help. The double consonant sounds from Nalthis are a bit tricky, but okay once you get used to it.

So who is Restares or what's up with him
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Zelly's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ah. Your comment makes more sense now. Mine was a correction to the OP, who mistook the old fool for Restares.
