  1. Lift: Shallan: Sigzil: Sazed: (Mistborn Era 1 Spoilers) In Cosmere discussion, you do not need to spoiler tag older material - all Preview material and any new releases need to be tagged (and prefereably in the correct Spoiler Zone for new releases). In a specific section (such as the Stormlight Archive Forum) then this would need a spoiler tag - except the Mistborn Forum. Each series Forum must tag and cover all spoilers outside of that section's stories. Spoiler Policy: Hope that helps
  2. Please see this table (WaT Spoilers at link, so set the Coppermind Time Machine before hand, if needed) on the Coppermind, but not all of them have System/Planet symbology yet. It can be manually found by going to the Cosmere page, Planets section. In theory (depending on tolerance) the non-Canon Aether of Night symbol could be used for Dhatri (the eventual Aether homeworld story). Hope that helps
  3. I'm happy that he tries. I'm happy he researches. I don't like that he should feel he needs to make this kind of post, but I am certainly happy he makes these posts anyway.
  4. Maybe consider defining your terms to ensure all sides understand the context of the comment? To me, "Womanizer" has a distinct connotation of casual relations, often with a negative end. Wiktionary defines it as: By my understanding, Adolin would more accurately be called a "lech" (though, that is also a slang term) since, from what we know of his relationships, it was more of a "wandering eye" or lack of attentiveness rather than a desire for a carnal relationship devoid of friendship or romance (which is indicative of "womanizer" - e.g. (very old refernece) Richard Kline's performance as Larry on Three's Company would be a "typical womanizer"). I'm not sure thay any participant in the discussion was implying that Adolin was just persuing a physical relationship with the women he "courted" - everybody was just using different terms to describe the same behaviour, then disagreeing on those terms themselves rather than the behaviour being described. Just one opinion.
  5. Welcome to the Shard. A solid method of recommendation - discussed here. Also, consider checking out non-Sanderson recommendations here, and if your other favorites are not already listed, feel free to add your recommendations as well (please see first post of theat thread).
  6. I don't suppose you have a Nexus account? Seems this would be easier on a forum where [card][/card] tags functioned. But is also an enchantment using an activated ability to become a creature - not a creature using it to trigger Transform. I'm not saying it is not workable, but I am saying that it works better as the templates like NeoGawa Saga -> Creature DFCs. (a la Fall of Lord Konda). However, my primary point was that I don't understand what you are trying to represent with this mechanic. . . Why you chose to use it in this way? Exploitative? Yes. But when exploit is, mechanically, "sacrifice a creature"? I'm not sure that flavor fits. Not that it cannot work, but maybe a different mechanic or new keyword would fit better? My comments were just meant to be a dicsussion item. So, Surveil couldn't be seen to have any synergy because nothing GY oriented was in the test cards. Notably, "Loot" is not a keyword in Magic - it's a fan term for "discard a card, draw a card" (which, more recently is sometimes "draw a card then discard a card"). Scavenge is a usable keyword - and, like Kicker, it can be adjusted for variations on the mechanic. Right now, Scavenge's definition is restricted to GY (CR 702.97): Which means if you manipulate to have Scavenge as a battlefield mechanic, you can open up the way it interacts in the game. But there are also other ways to work on those ideas. Concur that any given set should not have noth Scry and Surveil - but I think the discussion of which fits the flavor of TFE is worth considering. Scry and implications for Allomancy and Feruchemy, to me, fits the flavor far better than Surveil's mechanic (but that is just one opinion). If that has truly been decided, then this thread does not seem to relate that point. Last I thought was we were brainstorming ways to represent things so we can discuss the merits and flaws of the different options. Maybe consider updating the first post with hard decisions that are final, so we know what to brainstorm, and what to brainstorm-around. It does, in part. I'll continue to create ideas when asked for, and review individual cards when requested and I'll stay out of the larger set picture unless requested otherwise.
  7. You can change the user name without making a new account (many do it twice every Ookla Season). Just go to Account Settings and click "Change" (see below).
  8. Keep in mind, we have WoB Guidance on many Legendary colors. Fair warning: Filters off - initial reactions only for discussion. Nobody is served by holding back. 9. Didn't say I agreed with them.
  10. Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful forum info and tips. Please see this post for all verified non-canon, deleted, etc. Also, please see this post for information on the various White Sand versions. If you have already joined the Sanderson Newsletter, the link to download the Prose White Sand should have been in your first welcome email message (see picture at that post). If the link is missing, then please use the Contact Page let Dragonsteel know the link was not received.
  11. Copy all. I agree they all expressed that opinion. It is, however, opinion. When a Cultivation PoV says she fled (or a WoB) I'll beleive it, until then - unreliable narrator exists and it is an opinion, not a fact. I'm sorry.
  12. I should have time to review your last two posts this weekend (sorry i have not yet been able to do so). Meanwhile, here are a few samples i discussed above (very rough). Like I said, rough examples of ideas for discussion. Amass template edited into an artifact token for charge counters (flake counters? metal counters?) and an Ability word version of Flare where spending those counters creates <effect>.
  13. Iyatil was born in Shadesmar. Many people are, since there is a thriving community that lives at Silverlight (which is in Shadesmar). WoBs
  14. What makes you think Cultivation "ran away" other than that being Taravangian's assessment of the situation? From the outside, it looks far more likely (to me) that she orchestrated all of this just to escape Roshar herself - which she told Tanavast she wanted to do very early in their time together there:
  15. Though, we don't even know if TOdium's Godmetal was Raysium either. The WoB said it could change, but didn't have to change.
  16. Just keep in mind that Reputation points don't actually mean anything - they are Easter Eggs for people that have read much of Sanderson's works. The Sharder FAQ has a section on Reputation (a. k. a. Reactions) and the current list can be found here. There are many reasons why Sharders award Rep (and some never or rarely do so, while others are often reaching the daily limit); but, generally speaking, quality over quantity is more likely to earn rep - while obvious rep farming (like posting in 20+ games in a row, or double posting to a thread against site policy) will actually decrease your likelihood of earning Rep. In the end, though, Rep will only mean what you decide for it to mean - there is nothing inherent or implied to a reputaiton level other than "here's a cool new title reference because you reached <X> threshold."
  17. Most stories like this (Contact, Project: Hail Mary, etc. - even parts of Enderverse) do not have a Romance arc at all - they are more about people trying to understand something that is so different. Usually in an attempt to understand motives or achieve a method of communication. Good stories, but the "can a human have a romantic relationship" question usuallly never comes up, because that is not what the story is about. Minor Spoilers: Hope that helps
  18. Keep in mind that the Oaths are not in lock-step. Kaladin's Fifth oath was essentially the same as Teft's Third oath (because protecting himself was a hurdle Teft needed sooner and already recognized, while it was very hard for, and virtually unrecognized by, Kaladin until this book).
  19. Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have not read (whichever list is shorter) so that we can avoid spoilers (if necessary - or know they are not necessary). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful Forum info and tips. Neither - draw. Vin cannot kill or defeat Hoid. Hoid cannot fight back or hurt Vin.
  20. Singers and Humans can reproduce. Horneaters and Herdazians are both descendants of Singer heritage. I'm sorry if these things bother you, but they are, and will be part of the Cosmere - because species differentiation in the Cosmere - and even genetics - is not the same as it is for us. Having Intent and Investiture as a basic component of Reality (in the Matter-Energy-Investiture cycle) makes it different. That's also why Adolin's hair is Golden-Blonde with locks of "Alethi" Black (showing shared Ririan and Alethi heritage) rather than one gene being dominant and mostly or completely supressing the recessive gene. It's okay for you to not like it, it's okay for others to be fine with it. If it really bothers you, then I would suggest maybe asking yourself if this series is for you, or if this would bother you enough to eliminate some or all of the Cosmere from further reading - because I doubt this is going away. It is fundamental to the Cosmere for reasons that have not yet been fully explained. Thank you for your time and consideration. Edit: Also please remember that you can use (or edit) Support and Discuss tags in your topic title to indicate if you want to commiserate with like-minded Sharders, or accept friendly debate from opposing viewpoints (hostile arguing should be avoided or it will be reported, so lets all remain civil please - great job so far). Summary from that link:
  21. If I had to guess (and my personal take at the time of reading) was because of Chapter 109. My first take was like yours - why was this off-screen. but then we get to: Showing Taln's fight would both display things he is trying to keep back for Taln's flashback book, and spoil that reveal in Ch 109. Do I like it? No. Can I understand why he made the decision he did? Yes. It's in-line with a similar cut-aways in one of his earliest books (Minor Spoilers) Edit: I think it would be awesome if this scene is one of Taln's flashback chapters when we get there - to both have this fight, and from Taln's PoV: The haze of dementia - barely understanding the world around him. The change to sharp focus due to Abidi-the-generic-villain's stupidity. The crushing storm of the Bearer of Agonies Unleashed Yeah, I can look forward to that.
  22. We also know that Edgli is likely non-human, and does not understand humans - part of her reason for the way Nalthis works is to learn to understand humans better (just not Hoid). WoB Already referenced:
  23. Thank you everybody. Interesting to note that the most common interpretation seems to be that "denial" is regarding the vessel pre-shattering. That was not in my top three interpretations at all - mostly be cause the phrase "I was so long denied" in the context of this situation implies (to me) centuries or millennia of "denial" rather than years or decades that it would be if it was a mortal reference (why, after 10,000 years, would a decade or three of her former mortal life be described as "so long denied" - and if she had been denied Investiture when that time frame would not have been the centuries most Ageless experience). I understand why many of you came to that conclusion - but that conclusion still does not make sense to me in-context. (Doesn't mean it's wrong though - hence "discuss") Mostly I had interpreted this as something to do with why Awakening is such a "new" art (relatively speaking) - but as many of you pointed out - Awakening might not be new - just Returned. Another thought - what if Edgli did not create Nalthis - what if she found it, uninhabited? We know there was at least some level of human diaspora through the Cosmere from Yolen (not all humans started there, but many did). What if she wandered for a long time - found the planet she wanted to make hers. Then led migrants to find and settle there? Would that account for the large time gap between the Shattering and recorded history on Nalthis? Good discussion all, thank you.
  24. Have you also found and read some of his essays? Examples: Sanderson's Laws (link is the thrid "law" but that essay contains the links to Sanderson's First and Second Laws) as @Quantus mentioned Form and the Fantastic - Sanderson's essay analyzing his own first book (Elantris) from a college literary perspective I think you have to decide if your story needs that (not all do), and even some of Sanderson's stories are "squishy" - like Cytoverse (we learn a lot of what the magic does, but why can Spensa use it? Because she can (genetics - ish, descended from Jason, maybe - why can Jason? who knows). If you do need a why or how, then finding the framework within which you develope (even if that whole framework is not shown/explained in book 1) then make it internally consistant and decide when to reveal what information. For example: Hope that helps.
