  1. I'd like to see a source for this, becasue all I remember is a WoB that is wasn't a guarantee. Some lived longer, some burnt out
  2. Given how much others seem to rely on their Shardplate, and the fact that it feels basically built for everything but precision, I made an internal hammer and scalpel comparison, where Plate made you the hammer by default. I realize now that I went a bit too far in that inner analogy. Good catch on that quote though, I guess most of my memory of Adolin in battle was the Tower, where strategy became a little less relevant.
  3. Having more breath on you when you die increases the pseudo-sentience of a Lifeless made from you. The example being Clod of course, which is why I believe it was in the Annotations, but I'll have to check tomorrow Edit: the point being that breath does affect you in some way, so I do see it as holding you back from the Beyond
  4. I have to agree with Maxal on this one. Dalinar's combat technique (which appears to have somewhat rubbed off on Adolin) is basically an Iron Man quote from the Avengers movie: "I have a plan. Attack." He became the stuff of legends by leaping into the fray and never holding back. Even catching the Chasmfiend claw seemed unplanned, and more like his combat instincts kicked in to give him the last second save. It's not that he can't strategize, but that his mind and body have gotten so used to acting on impulse and being "in the moment" that planning on the fly would only slow him down.
  5. Not a Radiant at all? Or specifically not a Lightweaver, like Rob Lucci said earlier? This is more me wanting my crackpot Willshaper theory to be right than anything else, but I am a bit curious.
  6. Take a day off to look though all 130some odd pages 156 pages of topics in Stormlight Archive Subforum like I did. It's not the same type of obsession, but...
  7. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to learn that Kelsier killed somebody to get a spike. Assuming that the spiritweb remains largely intact after revival, is it possible that the body used to house Kelsier used to be a Nicrosil Ferring? Kelsier might assume that would anger Harmony less than if he actually killed someone for that purpose, and given his enhanced knowledge from a certain event in Secret History, he may know if such an idea would work.
  8. Exact Investiture Conversions between magic systems are something Brandon does not want to set in stone for a while. There is a very similar example to this in regards to Aons and modifiers, which also somewhat explains why he doesn't want to do this. He does not really have the time to go through all the possible applications of something like this because of how much work he normally has to get done. And he would have to fact-check a significant portion of his personal wiki to make sure he doesn't approve of something that will later turn out to be broken/overpowered. For example, he has been semi-commital about Lightweavers being able to make a "Death Star esque" laser via manipulation of light waves. They can technically do it, but the only specifics about Stormlight(the kind of specifics you are asking about) was that the cost was in essence: not remotely feasible. The amount of math involved to accurately deal with even a simple question like yours is a lot more than you would first think.
  9. I'm only adding this becasue it's what we did at first, but perhaps Vorin mythos considers the Unmade as anti-Heralds.
  10. Remember the "Oathbinding" discussion in that other thread last week? This is yet another variant of that idea. Granted, I've heard an explanation that doesn't involve Ishar at all: When Nohadon made the in-world Way of Kings, it was used to bind them to the codes of Honor written within the book. ie: the Spren used the book as a blueprint for the KR Ideals, just as the Flamespren corresponded to the measurements in the Ardents Interlude. Discussions about that topic died out a while back, but just like speculation on the Bondsmith wiki page, it was never really decided one way or the other. A supporting factor for this idea was Nohadon's usage of "Surgebinders" rather than "Radiants" in Dalinar's flashback chapter. But like I said, this is a relic of older discussion, page 127 of the SA forum in this case(late December of 2013.) Well.. Preservation moved Atium and Malatium into the External Temporal metals category of the table for his sign of 16 thing. Harmony is said to have moved it back to normal, paving the way for Cadmium/Bendalloy to , but that's still under citation needed.
  11. I'm imagining they mean something like what happened with Preservation, they wanted/needed to do something that required a newer vessel's freedom. Either that or Odium sees new potential in Kelsier, but that's several discussions about how "molded" people get by the Intent away from being a proper idea
  12. Bear in mind that this kinda deals with one of the more RAFO laws of the Cosmere. Which means it's all speculation Becoming a Shardholder stops the spiritual aging process. Attaining the Fifth Heightening does the same. Given Sazed's scholarly nature and the sheer amount of power he holds, I can see Sazed trying some tinkering to help with Marsh's spiritual clock once Trell is taken care of and the Atium cost becomes excessive. Its not a guaranteed solution, but if Sazed reaches a point where he considers Marsh an indispensable asset to have around, he may want a solution. Mayhaps more Atium(Ruin) to keep Marsh going and slowing the Spiritual clock with the power of Preservation to keep himself in Harmony?
  13. So there is. It doesn't have the awakening tag on it, so I completely missed it
  14. Best we've gotten is Brandon saying "anyone can awaken if they get the breath" but it's in the context of someone arguing the difference between a magic and a science. I believe that it means you can do it, but it's still up for debate in most circles. Just seems anticlimactic if giving breath to someone from offworld made it semi-useless.
  15. Well that's up for all kind of debates. The last time this discussion happened, Argel brought up this: which would technically make it canon. On the other hand, things in the Books overwrite things in the MAG, which weakens the canonocity. Inkthinker said that it was run past Brandon, which makes it seem largely canon, but... and it just keeps going.
  16. I have not found an explanation for why, but I have found evidence that Aluminum stealing powers is right. Marsh has an Aluminum Spike(its in the spoiler tag).
  17. I was responding more to the recent post, so I misread the did they exist before the splintering question. my bad Endowment and Odium are both on the record as creating Splinters, and neither are currently killed off, so that should end this argument with favorable terms on your end. Shards can create Splinters, but getting Splintered will create them.
  18. This is a pretty neat loophole if it actually works. Have an upvote. If we are going the "Blessing of Kelsier" route (gah, that name...) Kandra are essentially immortal as well, so double protection
  19. There aren't enough Seons/Skaze to perform a function that is done by Splinters... That more or less says that they are splinters in it's own right, just less of them. Also this
  20. It's only really a spoiler in that it's a Mistborn thing in the Stormlight forum. As they said, habits.
  21. I always took it as Shadesmar was "Cognitive Realm" in whatever language was prevalent on Roshar at the time of discovery. They mean the same thing, and since no other planets seem to have a name for the CR, it stuck with people like Khriss. "Window" is Ventana in Spanish, "Cognitive Realm" is Shadesmar in Dawnchant, or something like that
  22. They have actual names, but are usually referred to by the name of the Shard(portion of Adonalsium's power) that they hold. The person holding Preservation was names Leras, but he never had a reason to tell anybody that, so nobody knew that. it's a minor nitpick that doesn't affect much, but people have mentioned one of the 16 without us realizing until we connect the names. As a general understanding, you have it mostly right though. I will say that some of the other 16 know what is going on too, they just aren't doing too much about it. Its not just Hoid and Khriss(White Sands) who know, but they seem to know the most. Adonalsium got Shattered into 16 pieces. The 16 get Splintered into lots of smaller pieces, so I think that's the main difference. Splinters are just smaller pieces of godly power. This is where it may start to go over heads a bit. Basically the reason that the 16 are named after emotions/qualities is because the power itself has that mindset, independent of who is holding it. So from earlier, "Leras holding Preservation" can literally be said as holding the power of Preservation. The power itself wants to preserve, and Leras can't use it to destroy because it wont let him. So Odium doesn't pick up the other powers because he likes breaking things and doesn't want to be held back by something that isn't the power of hatred. Not that we know of, but we only know 10 of them so far. I don't think that there would be one, but who knows...?
  23. My biggest gripe with this might come down to how I interpret their motivations, but so be it. (post note: the formatting might be painful) The reason you give for why they would go with an Oathbinding is also the main reason why they would not do such a thing. Voidspren represent Odium being in control of them, and as you mentioned, they want none of that. Being bound by Ishar's Oathbinding is just as bad, since they would be robbed of the free will to bond Spren. Without a bond, Parshmen are "barely of intelligence,[22]" which is a loss in its own right, but the Listener Songs are an oral history. Parshmen rarely speak, and would likely lack the ability to remember all of the songs, one of which had at least 280 stanzas. I couldn't even remember all of that with normal mental capacity. They mention Desolations in their songs, implying that they've been under his control before, but have escaped/survived so.. Odium's control might eventually destroy them. Never bonding again will destroy their way of life. Being able to hold different forms gives Parshendi a level of individualism that we as Humans cannot possess. Humanity seeks to escape conformity at every turn, and the same should hold true for any sentient species. Even something as simple as a name makes you unique, and that starts you down that road. On the other hand, the Rhythms give the Parshendi a level of connection we cannot possess. They also help fit the speaker/thinkers state of mind or mood. Dullform and Parshmen have no rhythms, which is a somewhat similar loss to losing the Forms, despite the difference between the statements I gave them. While you could refute these reasons for why they wouldn't all become Parshmen because we know they did commit to that course, consider this: Their decision put the potential loss of their entire way of life as a better alternative than allowing others to control them again. Them having just made a decision like that, I don't think they would've allowed anyone any measure of influence over them. On a sidenote, not all of them became Parshmen. Tribes of Dullform existed in animosity for a long time, giving rise to the "Assassin in White" tradition before unifying and moving the the Plains. Meaning that not all of them were bound by this theoretical oath idea.
  24. Fair enough, I misinterpreted the italicized sentence.
  25. I kinda like this idea, but there are some problems. The chief of which is making an oath that involves doing something dishonorable (which can happen very easily) What then? Edit; I don't see Ishar being involved with Szeth being made Truthless, since he was "perceived as betraying his people in a fundamental way" Good clarification, except that he still couldn't logically have done this. All Parshmen are is Parshendi without a Spren bonded to them. Even Odium cannot always force the Parshmen to bond his Voidspren. If they have the ability to potentially resist a Shard, they can resist a singular Herald. The problem with that is that the Heralds disappeared. People don't know that they still walk the earth, and the few who do won't/haven't made that common knowledge. Then there's the part where a Herald should be able to resist another Herald and all that, etc... Scratch that line entirely, Ishar doesn't have his Honorblade, so he cannot use his Oathbinding ability as it's what you think to be a combination of the Bondsmith Surges. They very well may have come up with it on their own, but it's something people have theorized about for a while on here, having power over bonds. It's been in the theory section of the Bondsmith coppermind page for ages. Granted, the Stoneward page has an idea that Tension can give them powers like a Lurcher from Mistborn so...
