Long Game 19: Twinborn City

I had a thought... later on in the game we won't necessarily be able to trust these earlier scans....The spiked are able to forcefully convert players by targeting them with a charged spike, and if I was a spiked trying to convert someone, ild likely spike someone who has been already scanned and who is known to be in contact with the scanner, or they could spike the scanner themselves...

just a thought I had. So I would recommend that key players get rescanned later on occasionally just to make sure.

This led to a great deal of paranoia last game, so I'm gonna try and nip it in the bud now. No player can be converted until a One Metal Spike item has been charged, and we WILL be able to tell that has happened from the writeup (unless Phatt is doing things differently). It is currently impossible for a player to have been converted.

Remember that the Spiked need to know what your power is, and have the appropriate spike, or the item is destroyed upon use. It's very hard for them to get their hands on a charged spike.

Well, I said I'd do it, so here it is. It's actually not much though. For the most part, players just said "no, I'm not in a PM."

1. Elodin - Well, he seems to have been scanned already, so...

2. Clanky - Scanned already.

3. Wonko - Suggested the plan.

4. SilverDragon - Has said he's not in any PM's, but wants to start some now. Also, while he's putting together a list of who should be scanned, he hasn't put himself on there. I'm not condemning him because of that, but in my experience players tend to want to be confirmed good as fast as possible IF possible.

5. Mark - Has asked multiple times to be scanned. I believe he's most likely village because of that actually.

6. Arraenae - Was apprehensive about the plan to begin with, but has since seen the light and has volunteered to be scanned.

7. DeathClutch - Was in a PM with Mailliw, so I don't think he can be scanned.

8. Aman - Didn't mention the plan when it was first put forward. But later said he didn't have any PM's, and so is open to scanning.

9. Burnt - Says she really, really, really wants PM's, so please hurry up and scan her or she'll start PM'ing.

10. STINK - Said he has no PM's.

11. Araris - I don't think he mentioned the plan early on, but has since stated that he doubts he'll ever PM, so he'll always be open for a scan.

12. yafeshan - Said he had no PM's, but seemed kinda hesitant of the plan, voicing concerns about whether there even was a Feru Tin player. But that's justifiable I suppose.

13. Danosaur - Has been inactive, but his one post so far was to tell us he wasn't in any PM's.

14. Lopen - In a PM with Wonko, sorry.

So, yeah, I don't think much of those reactions. I think yafeshan's reactions were probably the most suspicious to me(mostly gut on this one), and I think Marks reactions and posts about wanting to be scanned were genuine and he's probably village(correct me if I'm wrong Mark ;)). Other than that, meh, no great feelings about any other one player, but not really any bad feelings either.

I have been scanned and confirmed good.

Probably not the most ideal time to reveal this sort of thing. If I were an eliminator you'd likely be my #1 choice for a target right now. But out of curiosity, were you confirmed by the Windwhisper or another scanning role?

I belive i had very legit concerns about it. I do not have any problem with the idea of this plan. I mentioned that this forced silence between villagers gives more time to eliminators. Here we are on 3rd night. 2 villagers are already killed and 1 lucky kill for the good guys. 2 days and no one was lynched because people can no be sure who to vote. It takes very long time to organize with this method. I know it is effective but it gives far too many advantages to eliminators too.

Almost everyone declared no-pm since start so I assume eliminatirs are quite fine with this plan. Because time is what they need most.

If voicing these concerns are reason for suspicion, so be it. Truth always have a punishment.

I wish I had the ability to speed up process for the plan

I actually disagree. I think that a longer game is usually a good thing for the Village. I'm sure if they could, the Eliminators would be having us lynch players left and right. The lynch is best used as a method for investigating motives -- it kills more Villagers than Eliminators, but we usually learn things from that. In a Role Madness game, though, we have better options than the lynch available to us for checking players' identities.

The fact that the Eliminators are complying with the plan doesn't mean they approve of it. There's no way for them to fight it without throwing at least one of their few remaining players to the wolves.

The other thing to keep in mind is that group confirmation happens exponentially. A Windwhisper can only scan 1-2 players a turn, true, but the moment they hit someone else with a scanning role, the group starts growing much faster.

We're in no hurry. Thanks to Mailliw's blood frenzy, we started this game ahead. I can't imagine that there are more than three Eliminators left -- as others have remarked, there are probably only two. Instead of panicking and tossing nooses around, let's take advantage of the extra time we've bought with our early luck.

I guess I am somewhat bloodthirsty this game. I would also like to note that by saying what I did about my PM intentions, it would be very easy for me to be an eliminator that is just gonna sit back and possibly never get scanned. I don't think operation Windwhisperer is a perfect plan, and I am pretty sure that it will only be able to find a single Spiked, but I won't say why because then it definitely will have that limitation.

Also, because of the slowness of seeking roles, we need the lynch discussion and results so that when we find an eliminator, we can try and draw out who their partner(s) might be before their alignment is revealed.

But I seriously don't get why everyone is sad/mad about PM silence. I mean, a lot of games don't have Uber Tin, and some don't have any sort of PMing at all. I have never found an eliminator through my own PMs in all the games I have played (which is quite a few, although that might be from lack of trying). Additionally, this PM silence should somewhat enfore PM Safety, which I am a proponent of, because in my last game as an eliminator our team struggled a lot not knowing who had kill roles in the village, so our own kill ability was less effective.

The reason why I am sad about not being able to pm is because one of the things I have really wanted to do relies heavily on pm, and before anyone can ask, No, am no going to reveal my plan.

Oh, dear. I didn't think of it until you mentioned it, Araris, but I think I just realized the limitation you're talking about. I've also thought of a way around it, but I'm not certain that way is the right choice. I'll inform Clanky and Elodin, and they can pass the concerns along to the Windwhisperer. I'll leave the final decision up to them. Even if we only hit one Eliminator, though, the Operation will have been valuable in that it will have brought together a team of confirmed Villagers, which, as you may recall, is how we won the last game.

I agree that those among us with no useful abilities should be sleeping, rather than spending all their time searching. However, I'll argue that this isn't the case for many players. There is simply so much power at play in this game that the Lynch becomes almost marginalized in its significance. It's still our single best killing option, but as an information-gathering tool, it is less critical than it is in other games. I'm not saying that it's useless, but there are much better options.

I'm well aware that it can be frustrating to those of us kept out of the loop, and I wholeheartedly encourage a decision on who, if anyone, is simply not going to be scanned. There's no way that we can expect a single Windwhisperer to work their way through so many players in a reasonable time, and even if we could, that would make for a pretty boring game for the rest of us. I'd propose Mark, who I suspect least of the scannable, and Danosaur, whose inactivity would make scanning him a wasted action. I'd put Ms. Spaghetti on this list as well, except that I have been, shall we say, 'burnt' by such a decision in the past.  :P

Above arguments aside, I do think we should begin lynching in earnest tomorrow. I'm sure many of you are forgoing sleep in order to use your powers; I respect and encourage that. On the other hand, I think searching for items should be a slightly lower priority. If last game is any indicator, the majority of items found are going to be spikes of one form or another. These are great for the Spiked and the kandra, but less so for the Village. And recall that last game, we were told when and where higher-value items appeared; here, we're searching blind. I know you all yearn for those lerasium alloys, but the fact is you'd be better serving the Village by participating in the Lynch.

Um... So I was going to end this by telling everyone that it's 'Windwhisper', not 'Windwhisperer'. When I pulled out Bands of Mourning to get a reference, though, I found that the Ars Arcanum there said 'Windwhisperer'. This confused me, because I could have sworn that I had read otherwise in Alloy of Law. I don't have a physical copy of that lying around at the moment, but I pulled up the ebook -- and sure enough, it called it a 'Windwhisperer'.

So where had I heard 'Windwhisper'? Had it all been in my head? I looked to the Internet, and found that the Coppermind is mixed on the subject. The page on Feruchemy calls it a 'Windwhisper', but the page on tin says 'Windwhisperer'. Wikipedia says 'Windwhisper', and references this table, which I regrettably do not own -- could someone consult it for me? The spell-check in this very text editor is allowing 'Windwhisper', but marking 'Windwhisperer' as misspelled. Of course, this same spell-check fails to recognize both 'kandra' and 'lerasium', so it can hardly be considered a valid data point.

Ultimately, I'm going to bow to printed media, and accept that a tin ferring is called a 'Windwhisperer'. I don't like how that feels to say, but it isn't really my decision. I both came up with and named the scanning plan, though, so I'm gonna declare that that is my decision. And I like 'Windwhisper'. Deal with it.

I would like if someone could figure out where 'Windwhisper' came from, though -- its presence on the Coppermind and Wikipedia tell me that I didn't make it up. Maybe Brandon mentioned that it was called that before the Alloy of Law release, then changed it in the final print?

tl;dr:

A tin ferring is called a Windwhisperer.

The plan relying on them is called Operation Windwhisper.

ArSel is wondering why I want to be able to have a private conversation with people.

Seriously, I don't get his issue with private conversations. Kae might be fine with all this group discussion stuff, but I'm not Kae. Private conversations feel, well, more private than shouting out all your secrets to the city.

This is the first time that I've ever been barred from having a private conversation from someone in my own city. Yeah, some people have died, but just because they're dead doesn't mean the rest of us are too. We still have lives! So if I want to get some metals from Kwon or pet Star Thief's cat or hang out with Jala, I shouldn't be barred from speaking.

This is the first game I've been in that I've had limited private communication. Other games, I was evil or dead and had docs to entertain myself in. This game I don't, and I'm feeling very deprived. So, windwhisper(er), would you mind scanning me?

Star Thief sat dejected in the corner. "But SHINES!" she complained

Kwon looked at Star Thief with that equal mix of fondness and frustration that any parent is all too familiar with.

"If you'll promise to stop running yourself ragged every night," he grumbled goodnaturedly, "I may find the time to make you a few odds and ends on my forge. I worry about you, girl."

A thought occurred to him.

"Do you even have a place to stay the night?"

A thought occurred to him.

"Do you even have a place to stay the night?"

Star Thief sat up at the mention of possible shines. "You would actually gove me shines, for free?" She asked, in awe. "I will go to bed to night if you want, if it means I will get shines."

The next question caught her off guard though. "A place to sleep, of course I do," she responded indignantly. "I sleep above the foundry just two blocks over. It's really nice and warm, with lots of space for all of my shines."

Kwon grimaced. The girl was living on a rooftop!

"I'm sure it is. Why don't you come home with me for the night, instead, though? I've got an extra room since... since Mal left us. I'll fix you up a meal, and you can sleep in his old bed."

Star Thief eyes the man suspiciously. No one could possibly want to give her a nice warm meal with out some anterior motive. She stood there for a moment trying to figure out what he would want, and then it dawned on her.

"You want to steel my shines don't you!" She accused, pointing her finger at Kown.

Laurelin sat in bed, reading, as the last bit of sin went out of the sky. A few pages more, and there was the shiver. She smiled as her hair turned silver, but kept reading. Tilion was probably still awake, and her door creaked as badly as his. Didn’t want him seeing her slipping off to who-knows-where, probably to murder someone again.

Only when the last light of day was long-gone did she move, and even then it wasn’t to the door. Instead, she went to the window, and stepped out into the silver mist, with a grin. Maybe she was going to get executed for murder. But if she found the murderer herself, perhaps she could survive the end of the week.

Perhaps.

But it was a hope, and finding a murderer sounded like a good deal of fun. So she set off smiling, determined to find a way to save her life, and hopefully save as well the life of the precious golden seed that hung on a necklace beneath her dress.

High above the quaint little village, three minds floated and looked down on the humans. A little tug here, a bit of a push there... All to find the best suited to rule, and serve their nameless gods. As the night moved slowly into morning, they exchanged thoughts silently.

Kipper, you do realize that Kynedath was storing chromium, right? And since the Spiked have left it up to us to decide their kill...

$%#@ “twice as likely to draw random attacks.” I HAVE TO DO THE KILL AGAIN. #$%@

Indeed. Well, at least I didn’t start on how he died. I would have been irritated to have to redo that. At least Saya’s probably not going to die?

#@%$&@&$@

Okay I got the kill. You ready for this?

...Oh dear. Um, Merel, maybe?

Saya.

No. Seriously?

...

Fine.

No, it’s actually Kynedath. :P

Kipper....

Hmm? :)

Kipper.

Yes? :P

I’m going to kill you for that.

You can try. :P

No, I’m serious. You are dying for that remark. Elbereth snatched up a spike from the ground with a thought.

Someone did want a spike charged, after all. She slung the spike directly into Kipper’s mind, before he could give more than a vague expression of shock.

Phattemer*, who hadn’t been paying attention to their banter, since he had important trolling business to be about, had the time to be properly shocked before Elbereth Spiked him, too. After all, two spikes were wanted. And she could handle everything by herself.

A very faint voice drifted to her. Control freak... She stabbed Kipper’s corpse again in annoyance, then returned the spikes to the ground.

Then she left the two slowly regenerating minds with a giggle and a mental wave, and started influencing minds.

Late at night, a metalsmith worked in his forge. Kwon pounded and pounded on his new creation, turning it sharper and sharper. After all, if the enemy had Spikes, why couldn’t they?

The steel spike glittered in his hand, and he stared at it.

“How am I supposed to use this thing, anyway? Just stab someone and see what happens? That seems... not very intelligent.” He sat down beside the forge, laying the spike down beside him in realization. This was the difference, the reason the village hadn’t made spikes before. It had no idea what to do with them.

Someone else, however did. There was a scrape as the steel spike was lifted, and Kwon looked up. “Hello?”

“You may not know how to use a Spike...” a voice said softly, and thrust the spike into Kwon’s heart. “But I certainly do.”

El giggled, continuing on. If Kwon couldn’t even figure out how to use a spike, he should die. Besides, she’d been wanting to kill him for a while now.

Eren Jaeger stumbled down the street, trying to hide the fact that he was very close to falling over and not getting back up. Eventually, he reached his destination, and sunk happily into a chair.

So he was completely unprepared when he felt a burning sensation in his chest. What... That wasn’t the alcohol, was it? He’d never had this reaction before.

He managed to crank his neck down and look at his side. With a start, he realized blood was pouring out. What?

Then he realized. His spike! Someone had stolen his rusting** spike!

He tried to stop up the blood, but it was no use. He was dead in minutes.

El giggled again, but then frowned as she felt her name being called. Phatt had returned, apparently, and he sounded both proud and annoyed. That was fine, though. She was satisfied enough with the night’s work. The rest could wait for another day.

Wonko was killed! He was a Villager Nicrosil/Tin Twinborn!

Deathclutch was killed! He was a Spiked Gold Compounder!

Phattemer was killed! He was an NPC(technically) Fullborn! too bad it wasn’t a real spike...

Kipper was killed! He was an NPC with Duralumin/Nicrosil!

yes, we wrote this without Kipper

Aw, poor Wonko. I think he accomplished what he was trying to do though. And we also just caught another Spiked! Wow. Excellent work anonymous player who killed/stabbed/un-stabbed(?) DeathClutch.

And that's another Compounder Spiked! Huh, that's interesting. Nicrosil Compounder and Gold Compounder. Not sure what that says about balance stuff...because these rules are going way over my head.  :P Still, we must be doing something right, since we've( cough cough *Mailliw and Anon*) got 2 Spiked already!

Posted

So Wonko was the Windwhisperer then? I take it means he died the same turn I was scanned. This is two times in a row now. Sigh. Alright so Clanky, who all did he confirm? I know he got you but who else? Wait, we can PM now right? Send me a PM and I'll tell you what metal I am now a Savant in.

Posted

So, we have no more windwhisperers? Can I now start a PM, then?

Wow. I didn't know I'd just get people to trust me by being insistent.

Anyways, anyone know any other windwhisperers who can continue the plan, or do we abandon the plan?

Posted

Well, actually, there IS another Windwhisperer. We're trying to figure about something though, so I'll get back with you on that. Just so you guys know, since I figure someone will ask eventually, I asked Wonko if he was a Tin Feru guy on Night 1, because he suggested the plan and I didn't think he'd think about it unless he actually had that abilitiy, and so he told me that yeah, he was a Windwhisperer. I also know who he's scanned, and we've been working together since last Cycle. I'll give more details soon I think, but I'd like to confer with my buddies before I do.
