Brightness Random she/her Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 All my "name" experiences... When you realize that your friend who does everything perfect has a symmetrical name: Hannah. When you think "Hoid" is a completely normal name. When you're introduced to someone named "Chris", but you automatically assume it's spelled "Khriss". (After all, aren't we all talking about worldhoppers?) When you think Merrin would be an acceptable name for a boy. When you start explaining to your friend, completely out of the blue, how to tell which country a Rosharin is from based only on their name. Also, when you're sitting on the couch and you suddenly start repeating "Urithiru" to yourself to see if you can hear how symmetrical it is. Then, when your sister comes and asks what you're doing, you somehow get into this "argument": "Urithiru," "Well, you're a thiru too!" "No, Urithiru." "Yes, and you're a thiru." "Urithiru. It's a city, I'm trying to hear how symmetrical-" "You're a thiru." "Urithiru." "You're still a thiru." "Urithiru!" (And on and on for about five minutes.) 11

I always pronounced it oo-ree-th-eer-oo. Totes symmetrical. Though I guess Rosharans use the letter h for any other letter, so it would be pronounced oo-ree-tt-eer-oo...then again the th sound could be its own letter...so yeah

Sometimes I wish for a pronunciation guide after the Ars Arcanum, but then I realize that it might add another 50 or so pages on top of Words of Radiance, and that book is heavy enough already! 3
Blaze1616 he/him Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 I was just going off of the audiobook. Sometimes I wish for a pronunciation guide after the Ars Arcanum, but then I realize that it might add another 50 or so pages on top of Words of Radiance, and that book is heavy enough already! I've yet to use an audiobook. I'm too afraid pronunciations will throw me off. My friends have always criticized me for my pronunciations. Example: The name Eliwood. Most people's pronunciation: EL-ih-wood. A short "I" sound. My pronunciation: EL-iy-wood: A long "I" sound. So when it comes to fantasy names, I just don't even risk it. Particularly once I found out how Elantris pronunciations worked.
Guest Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) And have you heard how Brandon sometimes says Vin? Vahn. And sometimes Kelsier is pronounced Kell-see-ay. Edited February 20, 2015 by Snoopy
Blaze1616 he/him Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 And have you heard how Brandon sometimes says Vin? Vahn. That's because the Scadrian language sounds like French.
king of nowhere Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) When someone on the weather blog that you follow as obsessively as the 17th Shard states "I am a Snowbro" over and over to reassure himself of an upcoming storm, and your response is to post the entire deleted interlude for the stick from Words of Radiance. the next time they forecast rain, you should post "the everstorm comes" EDIT: About the pronunciation issue, someone in the know may upload a youtube video in which they pronounce all the names. lookingglass she/her Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 When you get overly excited that a friend knows who Brandon Sanderson is, but disappointment that they only know him from finishing Wheel of Time and then seriously consider de-friending them when they say he could've done a better job :S 1
Fatebreaker he/him Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) You know you're a member of 17th Shard when you're reading Way of Kings and Jasnah takes Shallan out for a philosophy lesson, heading into a Dark Alley, and you suddenly think "DON'T ACCEPT THE COOKIES, SHALLAN!!" ...Then tell yourself to be quiet, so you can continue the story. When you dream of the day the Dark Alley will become Cannon. Edited February 21, 2015 by Fatebreaker 1
Delightful Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 When you look at that and know it's misspelled. When this makes you concerned. Which bit was misspelled?
Frosted Flakes Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When you knowingly exceed your mobile data limit to continue browsing 17th Shard because you'll never be satisfied until you know how everything in the Cosmere works. 2
Brightness Random she/her Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When your wifi is named "Edgedancer". 2
Kobold King he/him Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When your wifi is named "Edgedancer". When you're so immersed in the fandom, you think of the member named "Edgedancer" before the order of the Knights Radiant. 5
Delightful Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When you're so immersed in the fandom, you think of the member named "Edgedancer" before the order of the Knights Radiant. Ditto.
Claincy he/him Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When you misquote 'We are no longer the Knights Who Say Ni. We are now the Knights Who Say Numuhukumai'aialunamor'. When this makes you concerned. Which bit was misspelled? It's Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor. You missed the kiak You were really close though. (To be honest, I could tell that it wasn't quite right and I had a feeling there should be a k, but I had to look it up to know more ) 1
Paragrin she/her Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 What Claincy said... Except I didn't have to look it up. 2
neuxue Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 when you've baked an excess amount of cookies and your first thought it 'that's fine, I'll just take them to the Dark Alley and pull a Jasnah' 1

(To be honest, I could tell that it wasn't quite right and I had a feeling there should be a k, but I had to look it up to know more ) I am ashame. (Does the word ashame work anyway? Like, alight? Abroad? Ashame? Seems like it should) 2
Crystin Radiant Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When you tell your brother "I am offend." and he replies "I am ashame." and you realize he doesn't know where that came from because he refuses to read WoK and WoR 4
+Slowswift Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When this is your reaction to seeing someone else reading a Sanderson book: 10
Left he/him Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When you've done the above many a'time 1
Jeremy he/him Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 When your wifi is named "Edgedancer". That's awesome. 2
Brightness Random she/her Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 (edited) You know you're new to the 17th Shard when you develop a fear of posting, just out of worry that it will finally topple your post to upvote ratio. EDIT: ...and so it continues.... Edited February 23, 2015 by Brightness Random 10
Ashiok Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Holy geez! You almost have a 1:1 ratio. That's awesome.
