  1. Well, they study Nicrosil and Aluminum out of the public eye. In addition, they are trying to reestablish a Full Feruchemist.
  2. Earrings and piercings are much more practical than implanting metal objects inside you. And correction: Wayne could put metals inside himself to have metal minds inside his body. He just couldn't burn them, but with a good study of anatomy he could choose the least harmful places and keep them there. Remember when Sazed was attacked by Marsh? He who chose to withdraw them even against Vin's advice.

  4. From what we understand, Ruin could have recovered his Investiture in the form of Atium but after everything was burnt he would have to wait for the Pits to return to producing Atium to regain their power. But this is probably due to the nature of the Preservation prison.
  5. Correction: All abilities. We still don't know what that means exactly.
  6. Well, it Ascended as you read in SH. And he had 12 years of experiments with F-Aluminum, F-Nicrosil and Hemalurgy.
  7. Remembering that unsealed metalminds are made only of Nicrosil. Medallions have the relevant metal just for convenience, and probably also to help you know what power is stored.
  8. He deserves better friends.
  9. Perhaps a Misting can only burn its Atium alloy. So only an Augur and a Mistborn could burn Malatium.
  10. A new question is: can everyone burn Atium alloys? Because that will probably make Kelsier think that more Atium alloys are available.
  11. Atium and Lerasium do not need symmetry. It is not because they are both god metal that they need to have similar rules. They are of different Shards, were created for different reasons, have different properties (Atium is Mental and Temporal, Lerasium Enhancemnt and Physical) and exist in different quantities. Still, if this was the first book and the series book did not yet exist, I would prefer that everyone could burn Atium (not even just all the Mistings), perhaps even that the main power was different. But there are exceptions in all magical systems and this Atium quirk already exists and is part of the story (and even defines part of the story). So fixing it for the movie seems pretty unnecessary.
  12. I wouldn’t bother at all if Harmony made that change (he has control over Ruin, and could have changed humanity to be 50/50 Preservation and Ruin, which would be a good justification) but this change at the beginning of the adaptation already distorts events a lot. Even with the best moment of the trilogy for me, Elend discovering the deposit of Atium thinking he is totally useless at that moment but realizing the Seers at the last minute and in charge against the Koloss army. If everyone burns Atium it already loses much of the dramacity. In addition to being an obvious breach of one of the laws of Alomancy. One metal or all, just except Lerasium (because it is the origin of Alomancy and because humans have more Preservation than Ruin and Lerasium has different qualities than Atium).
  13. My problems with this is that, alternate universe or not, it seems to be polishing the wrong edges. Among all Mistborn's books, TFE has the least structural or plot problems. I consider Sanderson a genius, but I really care about so many differences. The idea of changing genders is the one that sounds less problematic to me, my only annoyance is that he plans to focus even less on the Crew (which already sounds weird, they already have a much smaller role than they should), so what is the point ? Shalan being more developed is a good thing, but kinship with Elend sounds forced. Isn't Straff and Zane enough now, will we have another member of Elend's family as the villain? Furthermore, it was the absence and a more palpable villain in the first book that made it so oppressive. The moment that TLR first appears, the tension is so great that you take your breath away. Even with my concerns these changes to the script are largely acceptable, but Atium usable by all Allomancer sounds really horrible to me. And it is what most disappoints me, because it is a change of tone that really changes a good part of the core of the series. Atium did not follow the pattern for other god metals were a quirck, but every magic system has strange peculiarities (even when it arose from an mistake or early development). Honestly, something good can still come out (Sanderson very rarely disappoints). But I've already lost a lot of the joy in knowing that Sanderson himself is writing, Sanderson as the author could maintain the identity of the work more than anyone, but the result of that seems more cinematic but less Mistborn.
  14. “Of course I am,” Wax said. “This is my second marriage. I’m an old hand at the practice by now.” Wayne grinned. “Oh, is that how it works? ’Cuz in my experience, marryin’ is the one thing people seem to get worse at the more they do it. Well, that and bein’ alive.” - He grinned, then winked at her as the waiter finally stepped over. “You wanted—” the waiter began. “Liquor,” Wayne said. “Would you care to be a little more specific, sir?” “Lots of liquor.” - “Wax,” he complained, pointing, “the immortal bloke is being creepy again.” - “He can’t understand you, Wayne,” Marasi said, marching past. “He’s swapped metalminds to keep himself warm.” Wayne stopped in place as they all hiked onward. “Well, when he gets his brain back, someone tell him I’m a god, all right?” - - I couldn't choose one.
  15. Brandon Sanderson The Lord Ruler died because he had filled his bracers with a large amount of youthfulness, and had to keep drawing it out to stay young--as his soul knew how hold it was, and his body kept trying to 'bounce back' to its perceived age. Compounding is how he gained enough extra youthfulness to pull this off. Phantine Actually, I have a question about the 'bouncing-back'. Is the 'bounce back force' actually what's stored in a metalmind? For instance, when storing atium a feruchemist ruins his body to make himself old, and then his metalmind 'catches' the force the soul puts out as it tries to restore his true, younger age? So you create metalminds by seesawing a ruining and a preserving impulse together. Brandon Sanderson The bounce back is caused by the relationship between the three realms of the cosmere. What you're saying isn't terribly far off, but at the same time, ignores some underpinning fundamentals of how it all works. In the cosmere, your soul is basically an idealized version of yourself--and is a constant force pushing your body to match it. Your perceptions are the filter through which this happens, however, and many of the magics can facilitate in interesting ways. General Reddit 2016 (Jan. 2, 2016) and Doom-Slayer So how do the exact mechanics of Feruchemy in relation to Compounding work? This confusion is primarily around how [the Lord Ruler] gets his near infinite age. Okay. So first off, I understand the concept of how they work. Feruchemy is net zero, Allomancy is net positive, combine them and you end with a net positive Feruchemy ability. So how Feruchemy normally works... you take say weight, store half your normal weight and then you can access it whenever you want. So you (originally X weight) are taking A weight, storing it, and then you are at (X-A) weight, with access to A. So we have a metalmind that store magnitude with the efficiency of how its received based on how quickly or slowly it is drawn upon. All the metalminds except atium seem to act this way. Atium seems to work as storing magnitude/time rather than just magnitude. The way I understand it is that say a 30 year old person becomes 50 years old for 1 day, this would give access to 20 years difference for a 1 day period. The Lord Ruler then exploits this by gaining access to say 20 years difference over 10 days (magnification by Compounding) which he then slowly feeds into himself to lower his age. Why this difference? I'm assuming its to maintain a neutral "body age" because with just magnitude a person could permanently make themselves younger by Compounding. With just magnitude of "20 years of youth" being stored, if the Lord Ruler magnified it, he could turn it into "200 years of youth" and then he would never need the constant stream off youth (and wouldn't have died without the bracelets) Hope this makes sense. Brandon Sanderson All right, so there are a few things you have to understand about cosmere magics to grok all of this. First, is that magics can be hacked together. You'll see more of this in the future of the cosmere, but an early one is the hack here--where you're essentially powering Feruchemy with Allomancy. (A little more complex than that, but it seems like you get the idea.) The piece you're missing is the nature of a person's Spiritual aspect. This is similar to a Platonic idea--the idea that there's a perfect version of everyone somewhere. It's a mix of their connections to places, people, and times with raw Investiture. The soul, you might say. (Note that over time, a person's perception of themselves shapes their Cognitive aspect as well, and the Cognitive aspect can interfere with the Spiritual aspect trying to make the Physical aspect repair itself.) Healing in the cosmere often works by aligning your Physical self with your Spiritual self--making the Physical regrow. More powerful forms of Investiture can repair the soul as well. However, your age is part of your Connection to places, people, and times. Your soul "knows" things, like where you were born, what Investiture you are aligned with, and--yes--how old you are. When you're healing yourself, you're restoring yourself to a perfect state--when you're done, everything is good. When you're changing your age, however, you are transforming yourself to something unnatural. Against what your soul understands to be true. So the Spiritual aspect will push for a restoration to the way you should be. With this Compounding hack, you're not changing connection; it's a purely Physical Realm change. This dichotomy cannot remain for long. And the greater the disparity, the more pressure the spirit will exert. Ten or twenty years won't matter much. A thousand will matter a lot. So the only way to use Compounding to change your age is to store up all this extra youth in a metalmind, then be constantly tapping it to counteract the soul's attempt to restore you to how you should be. Yes, all of this means there are FAR more efficient means of counteracting aging than the one used by the Lord Ruler. It's a hack, and not meant to be terribly efficient. Eventually, he wouldn't have been able to maintain himself this way at all. Changing Connection (or even involving ones Cognitive Aspect a little more) would have been far more efficient, though actively more difficult. Though this is the point where I ping [Peter Ahlstrom] and get him to double-check all this. Once in a while, my fingers still type the wrong term in places. (See silvereye vs tineye.) 16. Lightweaving. Transmute matter, in addition to creating/controlling energy. Endless applications.
  17. I have always assumed that they reproduce sexually, and have genders. In this case, your sex (male or female) as Mistwaith which (usually) defines your gender as Kandra. Although Kandras is much more flexible on this issue.

I agree. That is why I get irritated by this "Moash did nothing wrong" philosophy. All the characters have had serious flaws in the course of the books, in some cases really terrible things that would make them the villains of another works. I don't think Moash is the worst person in the world, my biggest anger at him was for betraying the person who saved his life (which puts him in the same group as Amaram and Sadeas). I think he can redeem himself, but for that he will have to stop being stupid and accept the consequences of his mistakes. In fact, I really hope that in RoW we will see the characters having to deal with the consequences of their choices so far. Kaladin confessing about conspiring against Elhokar, Dalinar having to rebuild the trust his children had in him after confessing how Evi died, Adolin facing the fact that he murdered Sadeas, and Renarin having to deal with the lies and his corruption. As we are going to have Moash's arc in this book I would then like to see him having to deal with the fact that he is this selfish coward, and making new choices. I just hope that if he decides to redeem himself he survives, i hate when characters die without having to deal with their own mistakes. Life before death, Radiant.

The issue here is not just about "Ends Justify the Means". Adolin killed Sadeas because he knew Sadeas would escape politically like a hero in public, while in private he would remain a traitor to the throne. Altogether Sadeas put three people that Adolin cares at risk, and was confirming to Adolin that he would do it again. Dalinar continued to give Sadeas a chance, even though he didn't deserve it., all based on a friendship that no longer existed. Any other High Prince would have already been executed for crimes like those that Sadeas committed, and Adolin realized this short-sightedness of his father and decided to act and make the best decision for the kingdom. Adolin still tries to argue with him that he had another way of solving things. "Why?" Adolin asked, stepping up to him. "Why are you like this, Sadeas?" “Because,” Sadeas said with a sigh, “it has to happen. You can’t have an army with two generals, son. Your father and I, we’re two old whitespines who both want a kingdom. It’s him or me. We’ve been pointed that way since Gavilar died. ” "It doesn’t have to be that way." “It does. Your father will never trust me again, Adolin, and you know it. ” Sadeas’s face darkened. “I will take this from him. This city, these discoveries. It’s just a setback. ” Adolin stood for a moment, staring Sadeas in the eyes, and then something finally snapped. That’s it. Moash never gave Elhokar a chance, he didn't even let Kaladin argue with him about Roshane. He didn't even plan to hear Elhokar's side of the story. And this moment where he speaks: "I'm sorry, Kal," Moash said, stepping forward. "I should have made it quick at the start." it was after Graves saying to him: "He has seen too much," Graves said to Moash. “If he lives this day, he’ll betray us. You know my words are true, Moash. Kill him. ” And shortly thereafter he summoned the Shardblade. If he only planned to incapacitate Kaladin he would not need a super weapon against an already severely injured and powerless man armed with a knife. Could he have repented? It can. Could he have given up? Yes. But it does not change the fact that he has shown himself willing to kill Kaladin for a petty revenge. So I accept that you defend Moash's actions, or that he is redeemable, and that what Adolin did was wrong. But not to compare Adolin and Moash. Moash betrayed Kaladin, the Bridge Four and the Kingdom, and after that he went on to even worse crimes.

Sadeas* tried to kill Dalinar through sabotage, and it almost killed Kaladin and Shallan if you forgot. It was no longer about war games.

Sadeas tried to kill Dalinar more than once, and suggested betrayal even to the throne itself. Sadeas was being so stingy that he would ignore the threat to the world just out of a desire for power for himself, and would continue to undermine Dalinar even after discovering he was right (who already had enormous difficulties in getting help from other kingdoms in the fight against the Voidbringers). Comparing him to the person who was willing to kill his own friend in exchange for revenge, just to keep his position and status safe afterwards, is just senseless. Storm Moash.
  22. I really hope that Shallan and Kaladin will solve this chull in the room about Helaran. Although Shallan's DID plot is very interesting to me, I would like her to make progress on this (since it will probably be a requirement for her to further improve her ability as Lightweaving and Soulcasting). I want Adolin to make progress on his journey as a Radiant, I particularly don't mind him becoming a powered character. Preferably helping Maya. I really want Dalinar to make progress in his Bondsmith skills, especially with Perpendicularity. I hope that Renarin will have a greater role from now on. Its secrets make it very justified that it has been tenous so far, but there are no more excuses. Fabrials. Fabrials everywhere. Preferably also Surges Fabriais. That was more of a wish list than a prediction, but there it is.
  23. And that’s exactly why it shouldn’t happen, it’s too cliche. Kaladin is already such a different protagonist precisely because he has had a family for most of his life, and even his departure and distance was necessary for his character construction as he was at that time. His father returning just to die is just a very tedious genre convention.
  24. I would really like Lirin to become a Radiant, preferably a Windrunner. But I just hope he doesn't die.
  25. I see Atium returning in The Lost Metal, but not in a continuous way as it was with the Pits. Perhaps some hidden reserve that has escaped the end of the world. The god metal that will be produced continuously for the time being will probably only be Harmonium. But I doubt that we will see Lerasium, after all the plan is that in Era 3 the Mitborns are just legend things. But probably the science of Era 3 will allow Atium and Lerasium to be available again, probably through the distillation of the Mists.
