  1. What you're really missing here is the fact that the different orders oaths mean different things, even journey before destination. We have WoB that some orders would be very happy with what Adolin did to Sadeas, but the Skybreakers in particular would hate it because he broke a law. The destination is the same, vengeance, and the journey is the same, breaking a law (when it was right). It stands to reason that even though Dalinar's destination is vengeance, the way with civil war is in no way an acceptable journey for a bondsmith - that's going against his oaths, and though they were taken at the end of the book, he wouldn't have been able to take them in the first place. To me, causing a civil war and dividing Alethkar is far, far more breaking Dalinar's concept of journey before destination than letting a murderer go free. He can't just break laws and social norms, even to achieve a right purpose, because that will divide and go against his oaths.
  2. I think her mother's friend was a girl, though I could be wrong. It's also possible this is Helaran, as Kaladin killed him with a spearhead, not a shardblade or anything...
  3. IIRC we have WoB he is the most powerful non-shard in the Cosmere. It's kind of mind-boggling once you realize he beats out titans such as Susebron, the Heralds, Marsh, perhaps the recipient of the letter (provided the recipient doesn't hold a shard), etc.
  4. I have to agree. WoK and WoR are very focused on honor and the concept of honor, which I find quite refreshing. It's an important topic today, as society's values slowly become less important, and the issue is rarely brought up. Do you do anything you can to succeed? Do you step on people and ruin lives if they stand in your way? How bad does something be to be acceptable "for the greater good"? Is what Amaram did OK? Is what Mr. T does OK? Would you kill an innocent to save 10? How about Wit's story to Kaladin in WoK (Just...anything about that)? It's a great thought experiment, especially for the timeliness (which Hoid discusses), and the novelty of it, and it's all presented in an entertaining and gentle format, so it brings the reader to think about the subject, without cramming it down their throats. The (maybe) subtle invitation to think about it makes it more appealing to think on than something that blatantly asks you to think on it. Ok, so I got a little meandering there towards the end, but I just love this subject, bravo Mr. Sanderson, bravo.
  5. Quick correction - The Skybreakers uphold the law at all costs, and would not be happy with Adolin, here's some WoB: Q: Are there radiant orders that would take someone like Adolin even after what he does at the end of Words of Radiant? A: I am not going to say whether or not Adolin will become a Knights Radiant, but yes, there are several orders that would be very happy with what he did. Q: Like the Skybreakers or Dustbringers? A: The Skybreakers would probably not want him because he broke a law, but there are other orders that would think he completely did the right thing and be very happy with him. From the WoR WoB compilation thread we have.
  6. Well, I'm not sure we've seen other Rosharian sports, and I doubt they'd have similar sports to ours, considering how different the worlds are. Another thing is that every person with shardplate is very high-profile, sure to be trained in combat, so chances are dueling or politics will be their favorite 'sports', and even if they do dislike those things there's a very low chance any other shardbearer would want to play a sport other than that, and if they did it would cause all sorts of gossip. Of course, this may just be down to Brandon not writing on sports much; I can recall that he did one scene in Warbreaker with Lightsong, don't think he touched on them in any of the mistborn books, I don't think there's anything more than a passing reference, if even that, in TES, and then I don't think he did in Elantris, but I'm not very familiar with Elantris, so I could be wrong. There's bits about it in Steelheart, but there's no actual playing of the sport. I don't think there's anything in The Rithmatist, unless you count the Melee as a sport. There's TWoK and WoR, of course, but as you said there's only dueling in those. Long story short, Brandon has three-four non-dueling sport scenes/plotpoints/mentions I can think of off of the top of my head in all his books, he just doesn't write them much. Back to Shardplate, if, after the desolations, they figure out how to forge shardplate (if they can at all), chances are it will start becoming more available for others. Dalinar mentions something similar to this in TWoK, when he is digging the latrine, and wonders why there isn't and shardplate for workers; it's very possible that if shardplate starts becoming more and more available to people, we'll see other sports with it. That post turned out a lot longer than I expected it to be, lol.
  7. I got you lightflame (WARNING ENORMOUS, HUGE, WOR SPOILERS FOLLOW, LIKE, HUGE HUGE CRAZY SPOILERS)
  8. I'm satisfied with that; question is, what's the mechanism by which plate repairs itself? We know that Shallan could transfer light between gemstones, but had to chose to do so. Does the plate act much in the same way the thing Darkness used on Lift does, and sucks stormlight from the nearest available source, maybe even one that has to be touching? Hmmm....This smells of something I need to ask at a Q/A...
  9. Actually, Shardplate as it currently exists can't be used effectively for Windrunners. We also have WoB (I can't remember where from) that all orders of Radiants had access to plate, but not all used it.
  10. Perhaps he doesn't want to heal his scars; maybe he's somewhat like Kelsier and they're almost a badge of pride, so the Stormlight leaves them untouched... Pride, plus the mental picture of everyone bowing to the incredibly Lighteyed Knight Radiant, only to realize he has slave brands is hilarious.
  11. Perhaps Feruchemical Lerasium lets anyone store up periods of Allomantic/Feruchemical power. Slight tangent, what would Hemalurgic Lerasium do (that's kind of odd, considering that's Preservation and Ruin together), and do we know what would happen if someone tried to burn a Hemalurgic spice?
  12. How about Axies Stormblessed, Aimian Radiant? Or, alternatively, Axies Stormblessed, Knight Aimian, or Axies Stormblessed, Radiant Aimian, or Axies Stormblessed, Aimian Knight? .... Yeah, it just sounds dumb once you start adding a title, except for maybe Aimian Radiant/Radiant Aimian.
  13. I think the two biggest contenders for me are Kaladin speaking his ideal and Szeth obtaining nightblood. I think my favorite small detail was Kaladin seeing a captivityspren, which Axes is beginning to think are mythological.
  14. I have a list of sentences as reactions from when I read them. Full book spoilers, obviously, and warning for excessive caps and boldness.
  15. Yeah, great observation. When the sun approaches the horizon, the Night of Sorrows comes. Makes sense, and it could totally work with Shadesmar's sun, given we know almost nothing about it.
  16. Of course there are! Axies is searching all the ice cream parlors on Roshar for them! Shallan has Strawberry (for obvious reasons), Jasnah Vanilla because she doesn't like anything else, Kaladin has Rocky Road because it reminds him of Rock's stew, Dalinar gets Cookies and Cream (For his past and present), Adolin has chocolate because it's what the girls at the next table over have, and Renarin has a scoop of everything because he wants to try them all. Of course! The best part is when Hoid goes and gets Harmony to resurrect Vin, Elend, and Kelsier, grabs them, goes and gets Vasher, Susebron, and Vivienna off of Nathilis (ignoring Sel because region-based magic), then takes them all to Roshar and they invent umbrellas and make millions of broams, living in style for the rest of their lives.
  17. My perfect meeting here is that Kaladin avoids Amaram for a while, and Amaram isn't sure who Kaladin is; he;s familiar, but Amaram just can't put his finger on who he is. After a meeting or something, Amaram confronts Kaladin about Kaladin glaring daggers at Amaram (and I'm sure the prospect of Kaladin glaring daggers is very unsettling to Amaram, considering how Kaladin won his shards), and demands to know who Kaladin is. Kaladin asks if he doesn't remember who he is. He talks about the shards Amaram won, and Amaram here is having a horrifying moment of revelation, when to top it all off, Dalinar (who had forgotten something at the meeting) is walking down the hallway, and hears the conversation. He listens for a bit, and grows increasingly surprised, culminating at the point where Kaladin talks about how Amaram stole his shards from him, and Dalinar just has to go around the corner. Kaladin's back is to him, and Amaram sees Dalinar, and is pretty shaken up. Kaladin notices, turns, and sees Dalinar. Dalinar, of course, is very cross with Amaram. Then, bad things happen to Amaram, and Shallan, Jasnah, Kaladin, and the Kholin family go and get ice cream, and are all happy, but the everstorm comes, but it turns out it's a really, really low key storm, and it's called the night of sorrows because Renarin spilled his ice cream. Then, everyone lives their lives unaffected, the end. Ok, so maybe not that last part about the ice cream, but you get the point.
  18. No, the disease is too contagious. All the researchers who were researching the disease got infected and didn't have any time to develop a vaccine. The government is currently looking for a scientist who doesn't like reading, as people who don't like reading seem to be immune to book-related hype disease. When the government finds this scientist, then true vaccine development will begin.
  19. That's a different case of Hype Disease. It does gets worse with each time you get it, though.
  20. Stormlight gives durability for sure; Szeth was able to survive Gavilar's punch to his face, and that probably would have killed anyone outside of shardplate/stormlight users. The real question is how well a shardplate punch compares to a Allomantic pewter punch; if shardplate happens to be more powerful, then I would tenatively guess that stormlight gives more durability. Right now, I'm going to have to say that Allomantic pewter gives more raw strength and durability (according to the power of the misting/mistborn, of course) than stormlight, as well as being easier to use outside of Scadrial, but stormlight has the added benefits of surges (hmm, that makes me wonder, are soulcasting radiants able to hold stormlight in like Windrunner radiants?), and makes the user much more graceful and heals much, much better.
  21. Hype Disease is commonly found amoungst members of an online forum known as "The 17th Shard." Symptoms include intense feelings of excitement about books, dreams about books, and constant page refreshing. Disease is not curable aside from the object of hype finally being released, after which the affected individual will often post reactions and theories on the book, which range from poorly thought out to thought out too well. Symptoms generally disappear a few months after the object of hype is released.
  22. Or...Honorblades can change to other forms like spears, but they knew it wasn't an Honorblade because it didn't kill the limbs it pierced. I can dream...right?
  23. As Words of Radiance draws near, I have found myself dreaming about WoR, and I know I can't be the only one. Seeing as how Highstorm dreams have some significance on Roshar, I thought we might as well engage in some voidbinding and predict the future from our dreams on WoR! Significant things from my dreams so far: -Kaladin gets Shardplate. -Kaladin gets mad and kills Amaram (or something).
  24. Actually, I asked Brandon in the 17th Q/A we had about this. Here's the quote: Which is interesting, especially the strong spirit part of it. This, combined with the fact that I think we have WoB somewhere that says that plate was available to all orders of Radiants, but not all of them chose to use it. This leads me to believe that the Windrunners didn't use plate at all, regardless of the Dalinar visions; I think those are different orders.
