    So, due to the fact that I don't have RoW yet, I grumpily sat down to finish reading chapter five of Slaughterhouse Five, as I needed to have that done by Friday. (I wasn't grumpy about that book in particular, just that I wasn't reading RoW).

    It was a good book.

    Now I'll have very little English homework for the next couple weeks.

    (But seriously, I'd highly recommend reading it. There's language and stuff like that, but that's far from the point of the book. People say that it's funny, but I found nothing funny about it. I think the reason I liked it was because of how completely depressing it was, and the fascinating questions (and answers) it raised about war. It just shows this thing that very few of us have experienced from this odd, convoluted, and somewhat terrifying perspective. If you enjoy taking the weird and nonsensical and trying to make sense out of it, I'd especially recommend it).

    Mine isn't here yet either! I ordered mine from Weller, and when it didn't arrive yesterday, I assumed it would get here today... So I ran home after school today, and the porch was empty. I guess the awful weather yesterday didn't help... Hopefully it comes tomorrow. They said they were using priority shipping, so it'll get here somewhat soon, I hope. *sigh* Let us all mourn together.

    Ah yes. Much better. Stupid school, always trying to get rid of all the fun stuff. (But I am going to finish tWoA before starting RoW. I'm almost done. I'm also reading five books at the moment, so I'm trying to cut that number down).

    Alright. So. I am a writer. I have been since third grade, and I hope that some day it will be my career, either as an author or editor. I've also been on the Shard for about three years, give or take, and I started a roleplay way back when. (The Knights of the Cosmere, originally the Surgefinders. We went on for a solid two years, but have recently decided to take a break. We might start up again, we might not. But that's besides the point.) I started said roleplay while I was in middle school, and I kind of sucked as a writer, which was especially obvious in tKotC stuff. I have improved a lot over the last few years. So I feel like I owe everyone some solid writing that I have done, almost to kind of prove that I can actually write, y'know? Plus, I've been meaning to do this for ages, just to sort of put myself out there a little more. (Wow. This is super coherent.) Anyways, I've never shared anything I've written on here. And I don't know why. You people will undoubtedly give me much better advice than my creative writing class. Without further ado, I present Miracles and Merely Human. (I lied. I'm going to say some more stuff. I'd love your guys' thoughts on both pieces, but feedback on Miracles won't be used, as it's finished 100% and I'm kind of done with it. But I'd love your reactions and feedback and thoughts and feelings and everything with regards to Merely Human. It will be a novel, and it isn't finished yet. So have at it!) Miracles This is a story that I wrote last year. It is complete, and I think it turned out pretty well. It has been published in an anthology, actually. I've mentioned it a few times, but never shared it. However, the more I read it the worse it gets. I don't know if that is because I wrote it a year ago, or if I've just read it so many times it just seems really bad. This is not the final edited version, but it is pretty close. I hope you guys like it! Merely Human Yes, the title is relevant to something in this novel. I won't go into any more details. This will be a fantasy novel, at this point a stand alone. It will probably end up between 80,000 and 100,000 words. I'm about 35,000 words in at this point. I have a very general outline, but not a ton of specific stuff. I'm going to definitely devote some time to the outline once NaNoWriMo is over. I'm only going to be putting in the first chunk. This novel will need some serious editing once I finish due to my weird writing process, so there's a lot of stuff that will change in regards to continuity and then just general editing. (For example- Ever doesn't have any brothers. Just an older sister.) This is basically completely unedited. And once again, I'd appreciate any feedback on this! If you guys want some more, I would be more than happy to post the next couple scenes as well. (That's when you meet the dragon.) Thanks for reading! (Wow. This is nerve-wracking...     I am here now... Took me long enough to find this. This is my second year of NaNo, and I'm going for 40,000 words this year instead of the 50,000 I did last year, due to RoW. KEEP ON PUSHING THROUGH IT IS SO STORMING WORTH IT. And that has been my motivational speech.

    It'll also be my first book launch, so I'm really excited for that too. 

    But my book will be late.

    So, I've mentioned my history teacher on the Shard before, but this is something that happened recently and that I'm still ridiculously happy about. Maybe two months ago I was reading The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher, and, as usual, I was just carrying it around. I do this so I don't hurt the book while it's in my backpack, and so I can start reading the instant I feel like it. And for things like this. So, I had it out on my desk, and in the middle of class my history teacher looked over, and said, "Jim Butcher is a great author," and then went right on talking about the Abbasid Caliphate. And so, as one does, I went up to him after class and asked if I could recommend a book. I just said "Brandon Sanderson." He was familiar with him due to tWoT, but was more keen on discussing the fact that I haven't read The Dresden Files. (They're on my list, by the way). So after that, I went on my way. Then, after I finished that book, I started rereading the era one MB books. I did this so I could kind of get into the Sanderson spirit for the RoW release, and because my friend is reading MB as well. (It's taking him forever, by the way). Soooo I also had these books sitting out on my desk as I was reading them. Maybe three weeks ago, when I had just started tWoA, after class he asked me to come talk to him. I was kind of freaking out, 'cause, you know, teachers are terrifying. But then he asked if he should actually read them, and stuff like that. So we talked about that (I told him about the Cosmere, too, in which he seemed genuinely interested) and then we talked about tWoT tv show, the new LotR show, he and my friend who's reading MB talked about The Mandalorian, and then we all talked about tLotR movies. (I also made this same friend watch them, because he never had). So I'm going to get one of those $8 copies of MB, ask if he's started reading any of them yet, and if not, give it to him. If he has, then I have a copy I can lend out to people! Although he might like WB better... I'll have to think on it. So YKYAASFW you write out that whole thing (and when that whole thing happened) and are really happy about it. When you have a ridiculous amount of Sanderson quotes memorized (not on purpose) and keep finding ways to apply them to stuff you're talking about in English. (Such as, "Every man is the hero of his own story" when we were reading Frankenstein).

    Day 15

    I'm struggling with it this year! I'm doing 10,000 words less than I did last year, but I am not doing well with it at the moment!

    And writing with a bird isn't easy. Kaladin will come over and just plunk his little birdy fluff right in the middle of the keyboard and either try to eat the words as they show up on the screen or just sit and watch me. Or attack my fingers. Good thing he's so storming adorable...

    Anyone else doing NaNo this year? And if so, how's it going for you? 

     

    Also: driver's ed sucks. I should have started doing it ages ago. I'm going to be sixteen in a few months, and my parents are making me do driver's ed before getting my permit. Which I completely get. But I'm going to be a few months behind when it comes to getting my license because I put off driver's ed for so long after signing up. *sigh*

      He's the sweetest little thing (except he bites my mom) and he's absolutely adorable. He's also starting to say "bird bird bird bird biiiird" and " good bird" and "what are you doing?" I've also taught him to target, come to me when I call, shake my finger with his foot, spin in a circle, and do a flip around a perch.

      Budgies are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.

      I should also be getting him a friend in a few months.I

      Oh, and his favorite thing to do is to toss a little vine ball around.

      It's really hard to get good pictures of him because as soon as I pull out my phone he'll land on it. <_<

      His sheer cuteness makes up for it, though.

    Warbreaker. I've only read it twice, though. The first time I read it, I was in seventh grade, so maybe 12 or 13 years old. I was only reading it because I'd loved Stormlight (which were my first Sanderson books) and Mistborn (I think only era one at this point), and it was another hefty tome of some more Sanderson awesomeness. I remember loving the first chapter. It's still one of my favorite scenes in the whole book. But seventh grade me had some issues with the rest of the story. One: we really don't get much Awakening within the first bit. Which was disappointing. Two: I had very little idea what was going on. I was following the plot, but I didn't understand why everything that was happening was happening, and wasn't picking up on a lot. Three: I was a seventh grader, and some of the content made me uncomfortable. At that point in my life, it might have been the most mature book I'd ever read. (I didn't understand all of that stuff that was going on in that regard either). Now, I know so much more about the book and the Cosmere and Awakening that when I reread it, I was able to pick up on a lot of cool and important stuff earlier on in the book. I also was able to follow the plot and it was really engaging. It really is a fast paced book. I also loved the complexity of it all. And I was able to really appreciate the characters. (I love Vasher and Lightsong. Those two are my favorites). And now I'm much more accustomed to the level of "mature content" that is present in Warbreaker, so that didn't pull me out of the story. I reread it in under 24 hours. It was also during the first round of Covid, so I had plenty of time to read. I then went through and read all the annotations, which was a ton of fun. Elantris has never really been a favorite of mine either, but I reread it about a year ago and I definitely liked it more the second time through. The Way of Kings will always be my favorite book, though.

    I agree. I just though of the shipping as the price for the ticket and the book being signed. I didn't even know that there would be swag of any sort when I got it. Fingers crossed! I've been watching his lectures for years, and they're fantastic. So we'll see what happens! Hopefully he's still teaching them at that point.

    Nice! That definitely makes it worth the money! It'll be my first release party as well. I'm about ten hours away from Utah. Plus, I was really new to everything when Oathbringer first came out. But hopefully I'll be going to BYU at the time of the next Stormlight release!

    I'll be watching it! Unfortunately, no one can come and watch with me, because of some recent Covid restrictions. I am very excited, though. And I don't have school that day, so I'll be right by the front door all day waiting for the book to show up. I just have to finish my WoA reread before then! So, I have been a little confused on this point. If we preordered it from one of the listed bookstores (I'm getting mine from Weller's as well) are we getting any stuff besides the book? I originally got it thinking it would just be signed and give me access to the launch, but I've seen a few things implying that there would be some extra stuff coming with that.

    Thank you. 'cause oh my gosh that drives me crazy! And I can't read a book of there's too much romance. I have to claw my way through it or drop it. And I'm going to say it... I don't like The Hunger Games... I read the first book but just couldn't make myself get through the first chapter of the second. I did read Partials, which was far better than most, but still wasn't my favorite. There are a few things like The Giver that are amazing, however, but most of them don't feature romance as the main story line. The Giver might not even really be YA. It might be one of those weird in-between books. I haven't read this in years, but I loved The City of Ember when I was in elementary school. I should re-read those ones. ANYWAYS. I started talking about books.

    I was just scrolling through the list of different sections on the fourm, and... Well, I'm really lucky to be here. That was just a very familiar feeling, and this is such an awesome place. I've been scrolling through that for the past three and a half years. This has been a very good place for me to be. As I'm becoming a little more active, I'm starting to remember just how awesome it is.

    Remember when the Knights of the Cosmere were the Surgefinders? And how I had no idea what a roleplay was back then? *shiver* Dark times.

    I had such little knowledge of the Cosmere when OB came out, too... 

    So, anyways, I felt like being a little sentimental. 

    I can't wait to start talking about RoW!

    I know no one has responded for a few days, but I think this is storming brilliant, so I must awaken this thread from its brief slumber. I guess. I will write all the time I'm technically lying, because I'm a huge procrastinator But I have to take this oath to join the guild, so... I will write all the time Or try to, anyways *waves hand* amen? So... Um... I may or may not have published a short story in an anthology... And I've finished a very small handful of things (mostly obscure fairy tale retellings, which I highly recommend doing to get used to finishing a story) and I've been doing NaNoWriMo... Generally, I suck at writing consistently. I'm also wearing Doomslug socks, but that's irrelevant. If anyone would like to read my short story, I'd be happy to share. It's pretty short, about 2,300 words long. I don't have the final version, but i have one that's kind of close. (The more I read it the worse it gets, though...) And if there's any genre we should wage war against, it is YA dystopian. Can I be the tactical commander of our fledgling army/nation/group of nerds?
