  1. Talnic nodded in thanks, and withdrew the coin he had offered to Arven from his pocket. He handed it to the one who had offered to buy extra supplies. "He will also need things like a bed roll, a pack, and other supplies." "Yes, you could say that. And if you are willing to join us, I wouldn't turn down your assistance."
  2. Talnic was walking through the market, crowded with wool-clad and shivering figures. He kept his eye open for familiar faces, trying to find another member of the group he could ask to get extra supplies. After passing a few vendors shouting at passersby, Talnic finally spotted a few of the people from earlier, huddled together and talking in the snow-covered street. He walked up beside them, and unwound the scarf from his face. It had grown wet with the moisture from his breath. He pulled his hat down a little further over his eyes, feeling oddly exposed in the open air. "Would any of you be willing to pick up extra supplies? One of the people who joined us this morning is worried he will be recognized, and didn't feel like coming here himself would be wise." For what he might be recognized, or by who, I don't know, he added to himself.
  3. Talnic shrugged. "Sure." It wasn't like he had anything else to do until they left. He was wondering, however, who Arven was trying to avoid.
  4. finished it.

    STORMS.

As soon as I was done, people came over.

    And guess what?

One of the peoples was almost done reading RoW, was Cosmere aware, and we had a fun conversation about Doomslug.

I finished it, "with tears, yes," but I finished it.

AND HOLY TANAVAST AND STORMING BRAIZE ITSELF.

    Stuff went down, you guys.

    Stuff went down.

But it was seriously one of the best books I've ever read. It was only beaten by tWoK, for me, and in that case, mostly because of sentimental reasons. (tWoK was my first Sanderson book, and it completely changed my life.)

The characters were... Fantastic. They've always been good, but they just seemed so much more vivid.

And that one kid? He'd better find a spren. He deserves it.

And I really really like Rlain, Navani, and Adolin, far more than I have in the past. I've never disliked any of them, but now I love them. Kaladin is still my favorite.

I'm going to have to go and discuss stuff on the forums and listen to Shardcast and stuff.

Yes, yes I do. Do you? ;)

  5. I asked for a sword for Christmas, but my parents said that if I wanted one I'd have to buy it myself. Daggers are pretty deevy, though.
  6. Luckyyyyyyyy!!! Yay!!! I made people feel things! This is truly the best compliment a writer can get for a story like this. I'm glad you liked (is that too strong of a word for this situation?) it, though.
  7. The spoiler contains ridiculously vague references to stuff that happens in RoW. You can read it without spoilers. I just put it in a spoiler box to be safe.

    Spoiler

So... This morning I was reading part five... There was that thing with the one person...

    I cried.

    Then I went to school.

I stayed in my history teacher's classroom during lunch so I could read (it was actually super nice, because there was only one other person in there, and she was just working quietly) and then that thing with Kaladin...

More crying. (Stupid Kaladin. You make me cry a lot. For so many reasons.) I love him. He's such a fantastic character.

    Do I cry easily? Yes.

Also, Kaladin has also started to like getting scritches! (You pet a bird by scratching their head. Most budgies don't like this since they're so small, but apparently Kaladin does now!) He's super soft, you guys! He'll fluff his head up, then move his head so I'm scratching under his beak, and it's super cute! (He's currently spinning in circles under his cage talking to one of his toys.)

I am now realizing how confusing the transition from me talking about Kaladin Stormblessed to talking about Kaladin the bird gremlin could be. I apologize.

  9. I just want a katana...
  10. Talnic nodded. "Understandable. I'd suggest trying to catch up with one of the others and asking them to pick up supplies for you." Talnic smiled, the expression hidden behind his scarf. The kid didn't look to be much older than Talnic himself. He probably shouldn't think of him as a kid, then. Arven did look a little anxious at the mention of fighting, but that was perfectly normal, for the most part. If you hadn't been raised among those who bore the knives in the shadows, you often didn't pause to think about what you would do if one of those knives was intended for you. Of course, Talnic hadn't grown up like that. He'd merely learned a lot in the last three years.
  11. "You need food if you're coming with us," Talnic said. Somewhat annoyed at himself for giving away two gold pieces in a matter of minutes, Talnic handed another coin to the kid. "What's your name? And do you need help finding stuff? If they see you're nervous at all, or aren't quite sure of yourself, they'll squeeze every last penny out of you that they can. Plus, you don't want food that's too old, or can't be stored easily, not to mention keeping down the weight of what you carry as much as possible." Talnic looked him up and down. "You got a weapon of some sort? Bandits aren't uncommon around Tarboda." You're doing it again, he chided himself. You're helping too much. You'll be come friends with these people, and then they'll leave as soon as the adventure is done, wanting to return to their home towns, their purpose fulfilled. So he'd keep his distance from these people. Talnic would learn about them, as he learned about everyone. He just wouldn't let them learn about him. That way it would be easy for him to leave first.
  12. Hm... Twilight is definitely a... controversial thing. I personally hate romance, but I don't think it's okay for anyone to outright say that a book sucks, and then just think everyone should agree. While some books definitely do suck, many do have some redeeming qualities. (I can't speak about Twilight, as I've never read it, and have no desire whatsoever to read it.) But me, as a socially awkward person who cannot speak up in situations like these, would likely just continue sitting quietly and just ignore the close-mindedness of the peoples and continue day-dreaming about dragons. If the subject comes up in a situation where you feel comfortable discussing it, I'd say go for it. Just defend the redeemable qualities of it. Acknowledge that nothing is perfect, and everyone has different tastes in literature. If none of the people you're talking to have read it, though, don't even bother. It isn't, in my opinion, worth the effort. ME. Kind of. One side of me, at least.
  13. Talnic noticed one of the others watching him, seemingly nervous. As the others began to leave, Talnic strode up to him. "You don't have to come, you know," Talnic said quietly.
  14. A samurai who is ronin is a samurai who doesn't have a master, and this can happen in a few ways. I'm not going to explain this on here, but if you're interested, you can Google it. Feudal Japan is super interesting, by the way. (Also, look into ninjas!)
  15. Talnic nodded. He could understand not having much. Besides, he wouldn't spent the money on anything other than food himself. "All right. Meet by the potter's stall at the market in two hours. Let me know if you need help with anything. I don't want anyone to run out of food when we're in the middle of nowhere." Remember, Talnic thought, it's your duty to see these people out alive, but after that, leave them behind. You dragged them into this mess. Get them out of it. Then they won't be your problem anymore. Don't open up, don't share, watch from a distance. It's for the best. As it always has been.
  16. Talnic reached into his coin pouch and pulled out a gold coin, one of several left over from his last job. He held it out to the kid. "That should be enough to cover it," he said.

Hopefully I'll understand, soon. Today or tomorrow, depending on the homework situation. Stupid math...

      I am curious, though...

If you swear in the Horneater language, is that allowed on the Shard? 'Cause, you know, it's swearing, but fake. Technically, "storms" is a curse, too...

    3. Bearer of all agonies

      Bearer of all agonies

      Not really. . .
‘Storms wasn’t a curse, not by a faint breeze or stormwind.’

    4. Tesh

      Tesh

It's mentioned semi-frequently as being a curse, although generally only the higher-ups acknowledge it as such. So it's probably just like like someone saying "crud."

      Or something.

      I dunno.

And was that a specific quote from something?

  18. "It would probably be best to meet in the market. That way we won't need to head back through town when we leave."
  19. Well, here's a picture of the shadow of a tiny Christmas tree. Unfortunately, my phone's camera isn't super great. And the bird, the tiny gremlin that things he's the center of the universe. He made taking that first picture very difficult. Merry Christmas!
  20. "My... abilities..." Talnic said slowly, careful to not let anything unintended slip out. The longer he would be around these people, the more they would learn about him, and that would be more information that they could use against him. He would be cautious, just as he had been in the past. "Are rather useless. You all know about the prophecies. I likely won't have another one for a few months after we finish this quest. I don't know where that came from." Talnin pulled off his glove and held up his hand, and tapped the simple golden ring he wore around his index finger. "This allows me to sense the presence of other humans. I can tell how many are in a room before entering, and it is impossible to sneak up behind me. Unfortunetly, it can't sense beings of another species, so it will be mostly useless for what we're planning on doing." Talnic put his glove back on, and then removed a map from his coat pocket, the paper crinkling in his gloved hand. Talnic unrolled the map and held it up against the wall, pointing to the dot that was Zemel. "We are here," he said, then began moving his finger along a faint charcoal line that he had sketched onto the map the previous night. "This is the best route for us to take to get to where the majority of the dragons are located. I made it so we avoided any small villages, and only go through the large ones to get supplies. The trip should take about two months, maybe longer, depending on the weather. Before we leave, we will need to get supplies to last us until we reach Noter. From there, we will be able to stock up again in Tarboda, although the ferrymen do charge quite a lot to take you across the river. However, they always are aware of the recent activities of the dragons, so it would be a good place to be. I'd suggest getting enough rations for four weeks, maybe more, if you can afford it. And if you don't have other things like a travelling cloak or coat, a bedroll, or waterskins, you'll need those as well. It will be cold, especially as we move farther North, so keep that in mind." Talnic pulled the map down from the wall, rolled it up, and shoved it down into his pocket. "The market on the East side of Zemel is best for things like this, in my experience. Questions? "
  21. I got some more spray millet (basically the favorite treat of every budgie ever) and Kaladin is currently sitting on the tupperware container I keep the small chunks in, and trying to get into the bigger bag.

Of course, as soon as I start typing, he comes over to chew on the keys of the laptop.

I'm now on part four of RoW! It's sooooooo good! I am going a little slowly so I can get as much out of it as I can. I'll be done by the end of the week, especially if the ending is as crazy as everyone says it is.

And thanks for the shout-out in that one thread, @Ookla the Shadowed!

  22. Talnic glanced at the speaker, raising his eyebrows. How was he supposed to respond to that? "I suppose I was the one who kicked everything off," Talnic said, chuckling softly. "If that's what you define as being a leader, then I guess that would be me. I am also, very likely, the one here with the most experience with dragons." He shrugged. "If someone else wanted to take charge, though, I wouldn't complain. I'd just keep everyone walking in a straight line."
