Anti-investiture explodes when it's under pressure, like in a gemstone. RoW ch 97:
-
There is a difference between those two things - the chapter made a point about it. I think the difference is that anti-light was in her body, but was not "touching" her soul. She could try drawing it in (breathing it in) and that would make it interact with her soul, annihilating parts of it. Here is the WoB I've mentioned before. It said it's survivable for highly invested individuals, but it did suggest anti-investiture would interact with the soul, annihilating parts of it - the bolt should be devastating to Shallan and yet nothing but pain happened to her. As an Elsecaller, she could just look into CR to see where the real Shallan went. Edit: True, that could be the reason, but a normal soul still is made out of raw investiture, it should work the same as with Fused. It didn't.
-
Shallan got hit with anti-Stormlight gemstone, surprisingly she was mostly fine because she didn’t breathe it in. This seems kind of the opposite to what was shown to us in RoW, when Raboniel killed her daughter - it just reacted directly with her soul, no breathing required. But we did have a WoB asking a question like this that said if a person is invested enough he will live, but it won’t be a fun time - it checks out. In the end I'm still disappointed by the total lack of preparation from Ghostbloods. They did nothing, they just run away, no secret off-world weapons, no technology ready to be used against Radiants - nothing. I've expected too much from them and now I'm just utterly disappointed by how this eneded. And we now know what spren did Mraize or Iyatil bond - Inkspren, Lightspren or Cryptics - all three allow them to travel to CR physically, but Cryptics aren’t so obvious to use. I doubt Lightspren agreed to be Enlightened when they all decided to bond with Singers and that leaves Inkspren as the most likely candidate. And we’ve seen Corrupted Inkspren already so I bet at least one of them is bonded with an Inkspren. I think one of the reasons why there are no Lifespren in Shinovar is because those aren’t plants native to Roshar. No surprise here, but Rosharan plants probably need Lifespren to infuse plants with Stormlight - a mechanism amplified by the proper Rhythm, used by Parshendi and later Rlain in RoW ch 15 to increase the rate at which plants were growing. Shin flora don't need investiture to grow, they don’t need Stormlight and Lifespren just aren’t attracted to them.

Yes, those are spaceports - Waystations as they were called in Yumi. That's how Elsecalling and Oathgates are working. You can certainly create spaceports like this using Rosharan spren and fabrials. It's possible Rosharans use this as their own method of transportations instead of Scadrian FTL tech (because they are in conflict, why would they share this tech with their enemy, Rosharans have to have their own way of FTL). Isles of the Emberdark spoilers:
-
Have you ever heard about the Alcubierre drive? It compresses spacetime in front of a spaceship and expands it behind it, allowing for FTL - think Star Trek's warp drive. Well, we have bendalloy that pushes on the time and cadmium that pulls on it - which is exactly how you make the Alcubierre drive. It's not about putting the entirety of the ship in one bubble, it's about warping the space time around it to be both compressed in front of it and expanded behind the spaceship, so the ship could travel on top of this wave that was created due to warping of spacetime. You don't move the ship through spacetime, you move spacetime around the ship - that's the only way to achieve faster than light travel (and wormholes, but Elsecalling is better). F-steel can't do it because you physically can't move faster than light. Savants can anchor speed bubbles to themselves, but on a big enough vehicle, like a train, the bubble will get anchored to it anyway.

Do invested beings already get higher heightening
alder24 replied to Sythrin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Seems possible. Investiture in general grants Heightening like effects and Radiants are invested enough to be considered of the 1st Heightening at least. So if they get some Breaths they should start stacking on top of their actual innate Investiture. You don't need to transform investiture into Breaths to gain those effects. While it's possible to turn other type of investiture into Breaths, it's something that even Hoid doesn't know how to do that during SA - Tress takes place in the future so it's possible they've figure it out, but they don't have to as it's possible to Awaken with any kind of investiture and that's how the Father Machine was Awakened. But truthfully, dragons are rich, very rich, it's not a problem for them to buy so many Breaths over thousands of years. OB ch 97:- 2 replies

Rashek and Vin were both Slivers and thus could stay as Cognitive Shadows in CR forever - the pull from the Beyond didn't affect them, if they didn't wish to. The SR has not much to do with it, it's all happening in the CR, where time flows as it flows in the PR. The Beyond is not the SR. This is actually somewhat possible because there is a corpse of a soul left behind in the SR. At best you can create visions like Tien's one. It's also possible for a Shard to keep a dead person to make him later a CR. That's not what the WoB said. He wasn't invested enough to leave a Cognitive Shadow, but could have been in that moment by someone (Harmony) and then he would have left a Cognitive Shadow. But as he was, he wasn't invested enough to do that. That's his soul, the spirit web, not his Cognitive aspect. And he can use Surgebinding because it's an ability gained by his soul, which will work as long as his soul is Connected to his physical body, even if a little improperly. I think their shapeshifting abilities are easily explained just with the nature of investiture itself. Cognitive Shadows are made almost exclusively out of raw investiture, it's either that their soul was invested in the moment of death, or their soul left an imprint in raw investiture that became self-aware, adapting their personality. Either way, this means they are like spren. And spren, just like anything that's also raw investiture, are highly susceptible to perception. They will change to fit whatever people think of it and what they think of themselves. Overall, you're right. Connections are of great importance here. To remain in the Cognitive Realm after death indefinitely, you need either a strong Connection to the Spiritual Realm, or to the Physical Realm. Death removes that Connection to the PR, most people don't have strong enough Connection to the SR, so they fade (the stronger Connection they have, the longer it takes them to fade - Mistborn for example). Slivers or Cognitive Shadows do get this strong Connection to either Spiritual Realm (Kelsier, Fused etc) or Physical Realm (Returned) and can forever avoid being pulled into the Beyond. RoW ch 92, 93 epigraphs:

Hard to say. Wax didn't fully die, his soul didn't leave the body, yet he still appeared in CR and Harmony told him his mind and soul was separated from the body (but WoB said it didn't). Kel was just slapped in the face and he felt ripping pain as his soul was being separated from his body, then he appeared in CR. Szeth died when he slammed into the ground during the Highstorm battle, his soul was separated from his body, but was healed before his soul faded into the Beyond (that's why his soul is lagging behind, it's not properly attached) and before his brain died. SH ch 1-1: BoM ch 28: WoR ch 88: Being a Mistborn allows you to stay for minutes in CR, as seen by Kelsier. Radiants of the 2nd Ideal are comparable. How much investiture this is we don't know. RoW ch 117: Seems this way. From Szeth's example it has to be done before the brain dies and before the soul fades into the Beyond. We don't have precise answers unfortunately. Death is a two stage process in Cosmere, which can be reversed as long as the soul doesn't fade into the Beyond.
-
Here is one, single argument for that. Dipping below 5%, which is 1000 BEU, removes many of Nomad's strength enhancements. That's a loooot of investiture and Radiants don't hold a lot of investiture, even when infused with Stormlight it's not enough to manifest those effects. So there is another mechanism by which Radiants get stronger, either by directly giving them raw strength, or it's because of healing.
-
That's not how it works. Marasi used the Band, nearly draining the speed out of them and yet Wax could use them without a problem. Malwish medallions are used by multiple people and yet there are no problems, nothing gets locked. Wax didn't drain any attribute to nothing, there was still something left, many were probably untouched by both Wax and Marasi (like heat, energy, breath and stuff like that). Moreover, Feruchemical powers stored in the Bands are most likely stored like memories in the Coppermind - it's like an on/off switch when you have the Bands. It's also the Bands that gave those powers because it's a little machine that's alive, just like typical unsealed metalminds. It probably would be impossible to drain them without the proper knowledge and intent. Everyone in that room tried to use the Bands, Steris and TenSoon included, all couldn't sense anything. Wax couldn't have done anything to Identity lock them. TLM ch 48: SA spoiler WoB:

Why does Ruin have spines/spiders under his skin?
alder24 replied to FoxOfScadrial's topic in Mistborn
I think Kelsier partially saw Ruin's Connections to everything. This is evident when he looked directly into the Spiritual Realm and saw Ruin reaching into everything and everyone on Scadrial. Ruin at this time was pressing hard on the fabric of this world, which might have allowed Kelsier to view Ruin like this, with all of his Connections. SH ch 3-3: SA spoilers: -
That's not what I wanted to suggest, only that Enlightened True Spren are bonding with Ghostbloods. They would still be bound to Roshar and unable to leave, so they would need some way to overcome that. The same method that they want to use on Stormlight could be used on spren, or potentially if Ghostbloods succeed in getting BAM, Mishram could use her Connection tricks to allow them to leave.

"Stormlight didn’t seem to give one much additional raw strength" - seem is the keyword here. That very quote we're constantly referencing... I'm discussing ONLY that quote and that chapter, nothing else. That's why I said we have conflicting examples. Those situations are not comparable in the slightest. Kaladin did significant damage to several sections of a plate, Szeth didn't. Szeth kicked Gavilar, who was already down on one knee, due to a powerful Shardblade strike he just received to the side and that kick made him fall onto the door, which was crushed by the sheer weight of the Shardplate. He didn't fly through the room. Gavilar was on his knee, out of balance, it would not require that much strength to push him further out of his balance and make him fall and it's certainly not comparable to what Kaladin did. I do not want to question if Szeth was stronger due to Stormlight or not, just that those situations are not comparable and kicking Gavilar in his state would not require as much strength as you suggest. I do agree with you. I appreciate the amount of examples you've given in this post. That's irrelevant in the context of the quote. Kaladin made a statement based on his past experience, how he thinks Stormlight affects his strength in general, not in that very moment. He didn't notice any unusual reduction of strength, nor any other effects of the Tower suppression on enhancements given by Stormlight. And as @Duxredux said, Kaladin's statement isn't just some random thought, it's fact based on tests and measurements done over the past year and a half with Sigzil - this is an important quote, which shouldn't be disregarded just because. I don't remember if Stormlight effects were at first affected by the suppression fabrial - they were after later notes were destroyed, but I don't remember if the activation of the fabrial itself made Stormlight weaker and I don't see anything in this and next chapter that said Sotrmlight itself was weaker than normally. Skill matters much more in a fight than brute strength. Yes, Kaladin stopped and held Regal's arm, but they struggled - the arm of the Stormform wasn't just frozen in place, they were struggling, pushing and pulling, moving their arms around etc. Kaladin held that arm and prevented it from swinging again. This absolutely can be done against a stronger opponent. I'm not saying that it's just 10% or nothing at all, I'm saying that based on that one quote, Stormlight can add raw strength in small amount (like 10%), but the healing that repairs tearing muscles allow you to push yourself beyond normal limits and can account for what would seem like additional strength, adding to what raw strength was given by Stormlight. So it could be like 30% in total, 20% from healing, 10% from additional raw strength. But again, that's only based on that single quote and I'm trying to argue how Stormlight is making you stronger. I'm thinking in that quote Brandon tried to explain by what mechanism Stormlight is giving you strength, because it gives you strength even if that's just an illusion of healing, it allows you to do something you can't do without it. Is this correct? Can repairing tears in muscles allow you to push that much beyond your normal strength? I don't know, I'm not a doctor, but the quote implies that's how Stormlight works.

Bendalloy doesn't slow everyone down, it speeds up the time around a Slider. Yes, the Steelrunner can tap his metalminds to match the speed of the Slider (which we see in SoS ch 16), but only after he notices the bubble which will take some time. But the bubble can't be normally moved, so the Slider can't really fight from the distance with the Steelrunner. If the Slider puts a bubble with the Steelrunner inside, the Steelrunner can tap his metalminds and be faster because the Slider isn't sped up, only time around them both is and so they are both affected. Throwing punches through the bubble is also not possible, so the Steelrunner has the advantage in this fight.

discuss Way too many Deadeyes
alder24 replied to Light In the Darkness's topic in Stormlight Archive
Option 5 - Radiants of 3rd or higher Ideal who broke their bond, but their spren was not summoned as a Shardblade, thus they became a Deadeye in the CR, without leaving a Shardblade behind in the PR. I expect that the majority of Radiants broke their bond in this manner.- 12 replies

It's a set up. We've been theorizing for a long time that we will have Shallan's children in the second half of SA, maybe even as PoV characters and WaT is the best possible place to set this up. We have 8 days of the story left in the book, Shallan's pregnancy won't affect the story that much anyway, but it's a foreshadowing. It doesn't even have to be confirmed within those 8 days, it's just a hint for the future books.
-
Well, it's not a Surge. Renarin is using the "Void" of Illumination from the Voidbinding chart. This has been confirmed by WoBs. Look at the topic linked in footnotes of the first WoB, where this is discussed further: The name "Void" is a fan given name for Voidbinding abilities. Renarin has access to the normal Surge of Progression, which works just like Progression we've seen so far, but his Illumination is different, much different even from other Truthwatchers. This is because he doesn't use Surge of Illumination, he has the Voidbinding equivalent of it - the "Void" of Illumination, from the Voidbinding chart. Oh, and the WoB posted earlier by @The Sovereign might explain why Mraize and Iyatil can use their spren to guide them through SR and seems to also indicate that they has to be Enlightened Mistspren - Truthwatchers have some abilities related to SR, similar to Bondsmith abilities:
-
That's impossible. The power of the Shard is so enormous, that it's basically infinite. It's not possible to create enough anti-light to annihilate even a noticeable fraction of it. And Mraize would still be killed in the explosion that would follow and that explosion could very likely affect CR and PR as well - investiture is turning into energy and that energy has to go somewhere. RoW ch 97: And we do know what is Mishram's prison - a heliodor gemstone. It's just a gem, similar to the one used to imprison Thrill. WaT ch 3:
-
Reparing the muscles is in addition to additional raw strength Stormlight provides. If it did not provide any strength, the sentence would read "Stormlight didn't seem to give one additional raw strength, but ...". The very fact he qualifies how much raw strength implies that it does provide some. Which is in line with evidence from all the other books. It said "it didn't seem to give much" - whatever it was giving (if it was giving anything) was too small for Kaladin to distinguish it from effects of healing. Healing is the primary "source" of strength in this case. Stormlight might give something, but it's a small amount. Your previous estimate of 50% is way too big as that's a significant and noticeable improvement, I would expect it to give something around 10% at best. Healing provides the main boost to strength. Or Stormlight gives no additional strength as Kaladin doesn't know for sure. It just seems to not give much. Zero is not much as well. I'm not trying to argue that it gives nothing at all (but my previous post may sound like this), but what it gives isn't that much and healing is how Stormlight makes you stronger - based on that quote. As I said earlier, in books there were conflicting moments and statements about it. He wasn't, quote below. Not at me, at Kaladin. Kaladin was carrying bridges for 100 days, he was fighting for years in the army, then as a Windrunner. He's exceptionally skilled in fighting, almost unnaturally so. He has the ability and skill needed to catch a swing of a stronger person early enough, before it gains too much momentum, especially if that swing isn't made at full force (which probably isn't as swinging a top-heavy weapon seems like a good way to lose your balance and your leg - but I don't know much about sword fighting). In this fight Kaladin was balanced, while the Fused wasn't - and balance is the key, it's even more important than raw strength. RoW ch 43:
-
He did. He attacked Ruin with all he had, pushed too far and the power was ripped away from him - but he also gave it away voluntarily to Vin in the same moment. Still counts. SH ch 6-7: True!

Mistspren or Highspren. I think this confirms that the group of Ghostblood asking if sinking ships was lawful were Surgebinders, but they weren't Radiants, they were bonded to Enlighten Highspren. TLM ch 70:
-
If Mraize knows Dalinar met with Cultivation and is searching for Honor in the Spiritual Realm, then he must know that Shallan tries to infiltrate them from the same source. And who’s the newest recruit? Oh, whoopsy, Shallan doesn’t know Malwish… Who would have guessed that a person from another planet would speak a foreign language. The one who gave up the power was Vin. But Wit is wrong, Kelsier also gave up the full power of the Shard after full Ascension. Sja-Anat is their newest recruit?? Oh, that’s interesting. And I’m disappointed that they didn’t expect Shallan to infiltrate them… Nothing, despite having Sha-Anat as their spy. So utterly disappointing… At least Shallan was discovered. And what’s interesting, Iyatil wants Mishram to control Shards, which is something Kelsier doesn’t approve of. Which spren are Ghostbloods bonded to? My guesses are either Mistspren, or Highspren. Highspren make a lot of sense now because of the group of flying Ghostbloods respecting law, who weren't Radiants. They weren't Radiants because they were bonded to Enlightened Highspren. Oh yeah, it's all coming together.

Yes, it's possible to revive a deadeye, but as far as we know that would require their original knight who broke their bond to reswear their Oaths. But those people are long dead and this can't work with Maya. Adolin swearing Oaths won't revive Maya. However, I don't think Adolin is forming a Nahel Bond with Maya, I think he's forming a reverse Nahel Bond. Normally, a spren fills the cracks in the soul of their knight giving them power, this time I think Adolin's soul is filling the cracks in Maya's soul, basically switching the roles. Maya is the knight, Adolin is the "spren" (not literally), Maya is gaining powers in this relationship. During the trial Adolin gave her his strength to talk, something that doesn't happen in a normal Nahel Bond. RoW ch 94:
