  1. Oh, that's a good catch, I haven't realized that before. Reading on Coppermind it seems you are right: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Hallaw Here: https://reactormag.com/columns/wind-and-truth/ Using a Soulcaster to create an engine is just a bad idea. You can just use attractors and repeller fabrials instead, or even better a fabrial manipulating pressure, like the ones keeping Urithiru pressurized despite being so high up. Soulcasting fabrials are way too rare and expensive to be used like this, not to mention you need a person to use them. Anyway, the Bridge Four is a bit clunky now, but Navani just discovered she can pair up two gemstones of different size to multiply forces. This is setting the direction that Roshar is taking with their technology. I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to put the paired gemstones on board of the airship itself, which would drastically cut logistics and manpower required to operate those airships. They can't really change to a different type of spren, but spren do change based on self-perception and perception of humans. However those changes are small over time and probably won't result in Honorspren changing into some totally different type of spren. There are other ways of changing a spren, but this involves Corruption - what Sja-Anat is doing or Odium when Unmaking. As for Honorspren acting dishonorable, I personally believe that their nature never prevented them from acting like that. Sure, they are called Honorspren, but they have free will, they are sapient, they can decide on their own what to do. They can lie, they can be unjust and dishonorable. I think it's an issue with their society rather than something to do with Honor and their nature. They fear another Recreance and hate humans so much for it that they are willing to do anything to prevent it from happening again. As clearly seen by Syl, Notum and a few others, not everyone is like that, Honorspren are divided - which speaks to me that it's not about their nature changing, just their society. Not every spren can become a platespren. This was probably tied by Ishar when he created the Knights Radiant and it seems to be bound by Connection and kinship between True Spren and Lesser Spren - like Windspren are closely related to Honorspren. You have a point. Ashertmarn works by proximity, it is the proximity to him that drove people on the Oathgate platform to a mindless revel. But he does encourage the other members of the cult to give up their worries and embrace the end. Those members were probably affected by Sja-Anat as well, as they worship Corrupted Spren in particular. And there was also Yelig-Nar in the palace. We don't know how the Queen's Guard were created, so it can't be said with certainty that they were the result of Ashertmarn's influence only, when there were 3 Unmades in Kholinar back then. Can Moash be influenced heavily by Ashertmarn? Possibly, but I still doubt it. Ashertmarn himself is a mindless spren, someone under his heavy influence would be driven to perform mindless revel - that's what Ashertmarn does. Then there is also the proximity issue, he works just like a Thrill and is affecting only those in a certain range, but this range seems to be much smaller than that of the Thrill - Moash was jumping all over Roshar while maintaining his emotional numbness. Lastly, Lin Davar was most definitely not affected by Ashertmarn - he wasn't numb, contrary he was easily irritated and prone to aggression, but was also soft to Shallan. He was not feasting, not embracing the end or anything like this. Shallan and her brothers also show no signs of Ashertmarn's influence at all. He wasn't the Unmade casting darkness over Davar house. OB ch 68: Good luck, there are almost 16,000 entries on Arcanum
  2. She started studying because of Szeth, but she was already developing the bond with Ivory. WoR prologue: He did kill them. He hated them and it was strategically useful - he was killing high ranking officers. WoK ch 1: No, very unlikely - no gold in her stomach, she's using Stormlight. But certain abilities from one invested art can be replicated by another in a different world. Shallan is doing a similar thing to what gold Mistings are doing, but that's because of her double bond, which makes her reach for more Fortune and peer into Spiritual Realm. This was confirmed in WaT ch 5: If you Soulcast air into metal, then yes, you will pull air into it from a large area. Soulcasting is in most cases mass preserving - that's why Jasnah created so much highly pressurized smoke, its mass matched stone's mass. Kind of, not in a way you described it but why would you do that? They already have much better ways of using fabrials to create motion - the Bridge Four. It's not about time spent in the Physical Realm, it's about her bond with Kaladin and its strength. The higher Ideal, the more Syl can interact with the physical Realm, because she is pulled more into it. She can do a bit more now. No, spren inside that gemsheart are there because they are bonded to that person/animal. Killing that animal to extract that gemheart would break the bond, allowing those spren to escape that gemheart. Just regular rock: Strata in Kholinar are most likely related in some way to Urithiru, but we don't know anything about it yet. Kholinar is a Dawncity, it's possible that it was created just like the Tower was (just rocks, not the Sibling) - Stoneshaped. No. That very vision takes place in Natanatan and Dalinar was a Natan - yet he was invited to Alethia. They were just maintaining the knowledge of fighting to train future generations and Radiants, but Radiants came from all over Roshar. Cages. Massive, strong cages. They had to do it, everyone was doing it. Stormlight heals, gives energy, makes you tireless - no wonder no Radiant doesn't want to be without it. But it's probably not like cocaine, however this effect is intentional. Yes. Soulcasters who use Soulcasting fabrials are prime examples of this. They are slowly becoming Savants, turning into the substance they create. Radiants can also become Savants but they are immune to some negative effects of this (turning to smoke etc). Gems break quite often if you withdraw Stormlight rapidly from them - Jasnah most likely did it, she is quite good at pretending and she purposely broke the gemstones. Gemstones in Jasnah's Soulcaster weren't in a glass sphere, all Soulcasters and fabrials have gemstones embedded in them without any glass. All polestones can hold light, some better, some worse. It depends how they were cut, they should hold light for some time at least. Ivory was and still is the only Inkspren who's willing to bond, there was no other Inkspren like Ivory. Jasnah didn't want to reveal that to Shallan at all, from all we know. She feared how the world would react to heretic Jasnah becoming a treacherous knight Radiant. Unless a Desolation would have started, only then Jasnah would reveal who she really was. Not really. He was just impressed by Shallan's skill. First Ideal is weird, not every Radiant we have PoV said the words, but all at least lived by it - which seem to be enough to be accepted. But you have to have a spren Bond for those words to be accepted. Theoretically, there was a WoB confirming that someone could be ready to swear all Ideals at once, so it's possible (can't find that WoB). There is no timer, you just need a spren bond and you have to know what the words are. The bead becomes the item. The bead IS the item - it's the Cognitive manifestation of that object. You can't physically have an item and its bead at the same time. We don't know, but Kaladin spent approximately 90 days as a bridgeman. That is an interesting theory, never thought of it. Seems there might be some connection between this and Horneaters but not humans in general. Humans arrive on Roshar via massive Elsecalling powered by a Bondsmith (there weren't any Radiants on Ashyn, Rosharans would call it this way). They are chained to nearby stones. Kalanor had one, but was killed by Dalinar. We don't know any other Ryshadium owner, but probably because they weren't mentioned. I don't remember, but I don't think so. It's rare and there are just a few Soulcasters capable of producing it. Without Radiants aluminum's properties weren't really that useful and ancient Radiant knew of its unique properties (the tunnels under Urithiru were lined with aluminum after all). Fabrial technology advanced only in recent years - the heating fabrial was invented just before WoR started. Simply speaking, they would have no use for aluminum before and no opportunity to discover how it interacts with spren and investiture. They are still windspren, just physically manifested as a Shardplate, just like Syl physically manifests as a Shardblade. Different orders have different Shardplate spren - for Windrunners it's Windspren, for Elsecallers Logicspren, Lightweavers have Creationspren etc. They don't "care" about being deadeye, because they aren't sapient, or rather they care but just are content in their deadeye state. Probably because their bond weren't as deep as True Spren bond, they weren't hurt that much by the Recreance (but still enough to make them deadeye). WoK ch 59 - that's the first time he said them out loud. But he was contemplating them and heard them several times earlier. Windrunners Ideals are focused around protection, so it makes sense for Windrunners to swear an Oath when put into a hard position, like Kaladin. Teft also swore his 3rd Ideal when Odium forces were invading Urithiru in OB and his Oath were needed to save the situation - he was also about to lose a lot. But Teft struggled with self-hatred, so his Ideals will reflect that. Kaladin on the other hand struggles with the thought that he can't save everyone. But Kaladin couldn't say the 4th Ideal in OB despite him knowing the words and despite him thinking he needs to say them to save everyone - he wasn't ready to say them. This is not a rule, it depends on the individual. Simply speaking Windrunners are more likely to swear a next Ideal during combat because of the nature of their Oaths. Lopen is a great example that it's not a rule - it wasn't about being the center of attention, he was protecting others in his own way, protecting the wounded from the darkness of their own mind (at least that's how I see it). Stormstriders - a type of Spren. Dalinar saw them too in one of his flashbacks. We don't know much about them. He was never Truthless, he didn't have to obey anyone. And the orders were to stay away from Kaladin, so yes, he did disobey (at first). Most likely not. He was probably referring to the fact that there Heralds and Radiants were absent. Don't know what those are, Painspren are just spren attracted to pain. There were two migrations on Roshar - the first one from Ashyn, when humans arrived and settled in Shinovar, then spread across the whole Roshar, the second one is the Iriali migration, when Iriali with golden skin and hair arrived and created the nation of Iri. Other than Iriali, all humans on Roshar originate from Ashyn and were brought to Roshar via Elsecalling. And those ethnic differences already existed on Ashyn - all Heralds were born on Ashyn (except for Ash), Ishar looks like a Shin, Taln and Nale look like Makabeki, Jez looks like Alethi etc. Alethi and Shins came from the same place - Ashyn. Odium - Rayse - on the other hand is Yolish. He's from the first planet Yolen from where humans later spread into other planets - all of that happened before Adonalsium was Shattered. No, Ashyn. Odijm first killed Devotion and Dominion on Sel, later found Ambition on Threnody and killed her somewhere else and then he came to Ashyn and Roshar to kill Honor and Cultivation - humans were already on Ashyn, they came there most likely from Yolen a long time before that. Up to 100 feet above the clouds of a Highstorm. OB ch 60: Probably not because Ashertmarn seems to work only on those close to him and drive them towards mindless revel. Moash doesn't party. I think he's affected by Dai-Gonarthis only because of this Death Rattle: Lin Davar was affected by an unknown Unmade, just like all in the house, but we don't know who that was. Again, it's unlikely it was Ashertmarn because he makes people give in to their desires - nothing like that happened in Shallan's home. That's all I know. The answers to questions I've skipped are most likely "we don't know."
  3. The "nearly all possibilities" thing was about Szeth confusing Rayse's bones for Taravangian. He saw a few subtle possibilities when spotting the loophole - so yes, he had much harder time spotting those possibilities, so much harder that Rayse had missed them and it required a fresh mind to do that. RoW ch 114: He might have spotted a checkmate, but he still has to arrange everything, which can be countered by the Coalition. But if everything goes right when the contest happens, Dalinar will have no choice which is a future worth the risk - even if that will be hard to do. Unlikely doesn't mean impossible, Shards can still arrange for this to happen - Cultivation did it with Taravangian after all. Mistborn spoilers:
  4. We have a WoB confirming Lightweavers can do this as well, but it's just harder for them. There isn't much we know. Substantiation is something new, but hinted to be possible during the battle of Thaylen Field. Windrunners have Reverse Lashing, which combines their Surges and Bondsmiths can use Adhesion and Tension to restore broken buildings and structures. That's all we have as far as I'm aware.
  5. It's probably because they are more present in the Shadesmar, where shadows point towards light. Axis by his nature might be more present there (he's an Aimian), Jasnah was transitioning to Shadesmar at this point when it happened.
  6. Future sight doesn't deal with certainties, it deals with probabilities. Odium can see Renarin's future, but he sees a lot of different probabilities and the same applies to everyone around Renarin. Odium probably is aware of that and acted in a way to assure that his chosen probability would be fulfilled. Sometimes he failed (battle of Thaylen Field), sometimes he succeeded (making Dalinar leave the Tower in RoW). Taravangian knows this and spotted a faint possibility which Rayse had missed. Now it's Taravangian's job to arrange everything to make this future reality. Taravangian saw a chance to arrange the contest of champions in his favor and he took it. It doesn't mean it will happen, it means it can happen. We don't know what Taravangian saw, but this might be a possibility that guarantees high chances of success, or even some kind of checkmate - once everything is set in motion, Odium wins no matter what Dalinar will do. Maybe that's why Taravangian was so confident. But I think his confidence comes because he spotted a chance of success, rather than certainty of success - he's aware he can still fail. Mistborn spoilers:
  7. RoW I-5:
  8. Sleepless count for sure, they are more secret than some of other organizations. Ire is another one - Elantrians, the lighthouse keeper Riino, some traders and others. But I have no idea what the last one is. There was a Feruchemist, Gereh, watching Gavilar, then Dalinar, killed by Mraize in RoW with a spike, he could be a part of the 9th secret society. Another Feruchemist, Axindweth, was working with Gavilar, however it's unknown if she was a part of Ghostbloods - she gave Venli the gemstone containing Ulim, later fled the planet on the night of Gavilar assassination. There is also the Sixteen in the Lasting integrity and some unknown Kandra agent who is not working for Harmony. All of them are possible members of one of the listed organizations or the 9th one.
  9. Wholeheartedly agree. You’ve augmented it very nicely and that; First Ideal was brought up for the first time as far as I recall. In a normal Nahel Bond, it’s a spren that fills the cracks in the soul of their knight, here it’s Adolin’s soul that seals Maya’s broken soul - the roles seem to be swapped, the bond is in reverse.
  10. You mean a single Chasmfiend can beat a Thunderclast, the thing that can just punch a huge hole in a wall, tear up towers and throw boulders halfway across a city? A Thunderclast whose body is made out of literal stone? Yeah, no. A Chasmfiend stands no chance against a Thunderclast, a group of Chasmfiends would struggle, at best they can immobilize it, but their fleshy body won't tear up a stone Thunderclast into pieces.
  11. The bigger it is, the harder it is to get it to move, the more energy it is required to move it FTL, the more ridiculous amounts of investiture is needed. Even Brandon said that moving the Tower just between Ashyn and Roshar would have been hard, moving it between stars would be nearly impossibly hard. The Sibling isn't the whole Tower, they are just fabrials and crystal veins. The walls and floors are made out of normal stone, Stoneshaped long ago from the mountain of Ur. Theoretically you can make it smaller, but that would require to create a new shell for the Sibling and move them there - which probably is too much to ask from them. Yes, you want to have a cool spacecraft, but you are basically sacrificing a whole city and transportation hub on Roshar, which is and still will be incredibly important in the future. And you know, the Tower can house tens if not hundreds of thousands of people there, right now it's nearly empty. It has some farming space, but providing food for the fully inhabited Tower would require so much more than you can grow there. Everyone would be starving after a week of travel. Not to mention the amount of water you would need for all of them... Why not just build a normal steel spaceship from scratch and incorporate in it fabrials that make the Tower functional? It's much easier to do, much easier to move it out or the Rosharan system, it would function like the Tower with all of its pressure, temperature and other fabrials, just add gravitation fabrials to the mix, more defence fabrials and it's as good as Urithiru, without moving the entire city and it's population into space.
  12. Sorry to say this, but Brandon shot this theory down: It doesn't mean that it won't become a spaceship in the future but I highly doubt it. Making a 10 km high mountain fly faster than light would be ridiculously hard and inefficient. Urithiru is just way too big to be a spaceship. No, me too. I don't know why everyone is so confused by this.
  13. Unclear from the text. But whether or not a knight breaks their Oaths depends on the perception of both the knight and their spren. If Syl thought this was wrong it should be enough to deny Kal his powers. WoR ch 19:
  14. I agree with your second point - burning a city is a tragedy, but it's completely normal during a war. It's also a message to your enemies - know when to surrender and we let you live, otherwise we will burn down everything. Historically speaking sieges were expensive, very expensive. A single siege could dry out a treasury of an entire country. And the death toll could be enormous, mostly due to diseases. Therefore pillaging and burning a city that didn't surrender sent a message to every other town - and it was an effective strategy. But it's not like people were ok with this, they weren't. They were terrified of such acts, mortified by the terrible loss of life. Often a sacked city became a rally point for the other side. It's understandable that many would be upset by the Rift, including Dalinar. This was not done to pillage or to capture the city, it was done just to massacre everyone in it. Those people were innocent. This was way too extreme. A genocide by modern standards. It's not about legality, it's about all of those innocent people who perished. In that context Adolin's rage is fully justified. Dalinar not only killed his mother, he ran away and hid himself from the truth - first in the alcohol, then by using the Nightwatcher. He was absent throughout Adolin's entire life, while Evi was raising him alone. Dalinar killed her, yes it was by accident, but it was Adolin's beloved mother. Dalinar then "pretended" to be this noble and honorable man (he was), when in fact his hands were washed in Innocents' blood. And after all of that he dares to preach Adolin, speaking to him from the moral high ground, centering every conversation on himself, thinking of himself as a better person (he is) and avoid at least apologizing to Adolin and talking to him openly and honestly? I don't remember if Adolin even learned the truth from Dalinar or his book. I can fully understand why Adolin is so furious with his father. This is not something you can easily forgive, no matter how strong were Adolin's relations with his father before. Adolin understands that his father is a better person now, that he tries to be a better father and that Dalinar did suffer as well because of what he did. Adolin knows that his rage is in many cases unreasonable. Both of them are at fault for not trying to resolve their issues but I can't blame Adolin for acting this way.
  15. Rescue with what army? Heavenly Ones are on Odium's side, only a few of them joined Leshwi. There are just a few thousands or so Listeners there, mostly elderly and children. They have only one Willshaper of 3rd Ideal, any new one won't have enough time to learn their new powers so they are as good as regular Listeners. I do expect they will get involved, but I don't think they will turn the tide, even with Chasmfiends.
  16. I'm quite sure the Shattered Plains will be lost. 1000 Fused with one Thunderclast is a lot of power. Against it Dalinar can only place significantly weaker troops with only a fraction of Radiants. Sigzil is in command and that worries me even more. We know from TSM that Sig made a big mistake while leading Windrunners and later he abandoned his Oaths. Now everything makes me feel this mistake will cost the coalition the Shattered Plains.
  17. Dalinar summond a physical piece of the Stormfather like a Shardblade to open the Oathgate in Vedenar. At that point Dalinar didn't know he can open a perpendicularlity. I think a spren can block the access to Surges if their use is against spoken Ideals. In WoR Syl revoked all powers from Kaladin during a training session with Adolin, when Kaladin got angry.
  18. That's wrong, this is what Wayne thought, the truth is he was already forgiven, he earned it by being a good person. That's the theme of SA - everyone can be forgiven, everyone can try to be a better person, try to reach noble ideals. From a slave to a murderer or a warlord who butchered countless innocent people, they can be all be forgiven if they embrace the change - Szeth included. I don't believe Szeth has to die to be absolved of his sins and he already died and was reborn. He was absolved already. TLM ch 71:
  19. We've never seen any Skybreakers using Division but to be fair we haven't seen a lot of higher Oath Skybreakers fighting - I think only Nale did this on pages and he didn't even use Gravitation to fight Lift. The simplest explanation is that in situations we've seen Skybreakers, they just didn't need to use it at all. Nale is an extremely skillful fighter, he doesn't need to use Surges to deal with Radiants like Lift. They certainly didn't give up Division - Nale said to Szeth at the end of OB that they will meet to train with this Surge. They've never done that, but this indicates Skybreakers have access to it, are trained with it and can use it. And it's possible that because of how dangerous this Surge is, it's the spren that decides whether or not to use it. I doubt it however. This Surge is already limited to be accessed only by those above the 3rd Ideal, the training of it starts when the Spren decides, it would be too much if a Skybreaker couldn't decide on they own to use it. OB ch 121:
  20. A champion, it's called a champion. Kaladin already is considered to be Wind's champion. Kaladin can't Ascend to the Wind as the Wind already has a Vessel - itself. The Wind is the mind who controls the Wind. I don't even think you can separate them without destroying the spren - a spare is the power who gained sentience after all. An Avatar is like a mini-Shard being a non-autonomous part of it, an aspect of a Shard - that would require manifesting a part of the Wind (not Splintering it) and giving it to Kaladin (who would Ascend). But I doubt this is possible for a mere spren. They are just too small and the Wind is still smaller than the three god spren. A spren manifesting an Avatar is just way too pointless. Just bonding is a better option. I haven't noticed before that the "watched his homeland turned into dust" Death Rattle appeared in the fist chapter with Kharbranth. Wow. I do think that this is about Taravangian accidentally destroying his city. The fact the Death Rattle is shown when Kharbranth is shown too seems like a perfect foreshadowing.
  21. Yes! Szeth’s chapter! Finally! Interestingly he calls himself son-Honor, almost like Heralds are son-god. Why? Because he's a Radiant now? Szeth's life is ruled by voices - he heard them all of his life. I wonder when are we going to meet his childhood voice. It's sad that his Highspren didn't allow Szeth to express a little bit of emotions - have they been too long in Nale's shadow, or Highspren were always like this? There was a WoB that ancient Skybreakers would be terrified by what modern Skybreakers are doing, so maybe Nale made Highspren like this since Recreance? Szeth roastes Kaladin. I didn't expect this and yet I’ve yearned so much for those two speak to each other. And it ended way too soon. Storm it, I want more Kaladin and Szeth! I want to see how weirded out Kaladin is because of normal grass being all around him! Oh, interesting. The tone of a Shard changes when a new person Ascends. As I was listening to the tactic discussion, I realized something. The Sibling said the enemy can't come to the Tower - but they can, just not the Singers. Humans from Jah Keved or Iri can. They won't be affected by the Tower's defenses at all. Radiants will be out, fighting on three fronts, the Tower will be empty, just sitting there to be invaded again. However, most of people from Jah Keved should be on ships heading to Tahylen city - unless those are just Singers and humans are waiting to use an Oathgate (but that requires unlocking it from the Urithiru side - Skybreakers can do it). But I doubt we will see a second attempt at conquering Urithiru, we just had one, yet this is still a dangerous possibility Dalinar have missed. Those decisions seemed impactful and final. The best sent to Azimir, Jasnah who wants to prove herself to Thaylen city, poor Sigzil was given the command of the Shattered Plains. I feel like every one of those decisions could turn disastrous. Sig on the other hand, I know where this leads to - I don't think the Shattered Plains will hold. I already feel sorry for him. It's so bad between Adolin and Dalinar. It's good they will be separated, but it's also very bad too. This will only continue to grow - something that someone could exploit.
  22. And in other epigraph it talks about Rashek's instictive knowledge of Hemalurgy, and how without it, he would be unable to use it at all So Epigraph 9 talks about Ruin-whispered things and instinctive things, and then Epigraph 44 calls Rashek's knowledge of Hemalurgy instinctive. Ruin whispered to Rashek about Hemalurgy, encouraging him to use it. Rashek use instinctive knowledge granted by the power to create specific constructs with specific flaws. That's how I view this. Without Ruin, Rashek probably would be unable to use Hemalurgy the way he did. And remember, this instinctive knowledge didn't came out of nowhere. Rashek had to first think of it - he tried to burn the Mists away before realizing that they are Preservation's power. Without Ruin, he might have been totally unaware of Hemalurgy. Vin literally Ascended, she held the power of the Well and let it go. She became a Sliver. She had it in her when Ruin was talking to her. It vaporized her body. Disagree. There is nothing to suggest that pre-Rashek Scadrial knew anything about Hemalurgy.
  23. I think Dalinar at first, but Odium will win of force him to break the terms so Dalinar will Descend and later Kaladin will pick Honor up.
  24. This was certainly the case, confirmed by HoA ch 9 epigraphs - Ruin was whispering to Rashek during his Ascension and made him at least partially aware of Hemalurgy. But yes, Rashek purposefully created his Hemalurgic constructs with built-in flaws, eave if Ruin made him aware of Hemalurgy and maybe even guided him when creating those constructs. Rashek's awareness granted by the power of the Well allowed him to deceive Ruin in the end. Ruin influenced Vin when she was holding the power of the Well and Shards can perceive time differently. I don't think it was known, the piercings was Ruin's manipulation but it doesn't mean Hemalurgy was known - metalmind earrings are piercings as well. Alendi had no knowledge about either Allomancy or Feruchemy, and without that, Hemalurgy is mostly useless. Alendi was spiked with A-bronze, but that was most likely done in the same was as Vin's spike.
  25. Technically speaking, the lines are starting from the "center of self," not the center of gravity, which are close together, but not in the same place. I think it's possible for a highly skilled Allomancer to push from different parts of his body, possibly Marsh did this in TLM when he crushed ha gun in between his hands. Could Zane do this? Hard to say.
