Mists can't be picked up and used just like that. Nobody could do that except for Vin, who had an exceptionally large Connection to Preservation, because Preservation had chosen her as its next Vessel. Mists aren't as free as Stormlight is, and aren't trap in a gemstone. You would probably need a ton of Connection to inhale Mists in the first place, and nobody has that. It's easier to take Stormlight from Roshar that can be so easily captured in a gemstone. And you would still need to unkey them, because a normal Mistborn can't use them. But it is theoretically possible to capture Mists in a gemstone, but because it's "theoretical", it probably is more complicated than just holding a gemstone out in the open during a misty night.

Discord will be more Preservation than Ruin
alder24 replied to discord=more_preservation's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's not that it's written in the past tenses, this is reported speech, all of the descriptions in the book are in reported speech - the original sentence was not in past perfect, but it was changed into past perfect because it is reported speech. No, they are not. Yes, they are Harmony's body, they belong to Harmony, but they aren't made out of Harmony's investiture, but out of Preservation or Ruin's investiture. There are two types of Mists, not one. One type is of Ruin, the other is of Preservation, both are of Harmony. No. Atium is of Ruin, but also of Harmony now - but it can't be of Preservation and cannot change into Preservation's investiture. Atium is still pure Ruin's investiture. It can't. You need to add Preservation's power to Atium to form Harmonium, you can't turn Atium into Preservation's power as those are two different things. It is not. It's never unkeyed unless humans do something to investiture to unkey it. Investiture naturally doesn't exist in an unkeyed state, it is always keyed to its Shard. You have no proof for this statement and extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs. And no, it doesn't "exist in the Cognitive Realm". In physical god metal form it transcends all three realms but once used it returns into SR. That was Dor, unkeyed by some unknown means. All investiture is keyed unless someone does something to it to unkey it. A shape made out of Mists is nothing like a dark Shadow. And dark, and darkness are like black color of Ruin. So yes, it is most likely Ruin, and it wasn't the first time when Kelsier saw that. You know what a Cognitive Shadow is, don't you? A Cognitive Shadow is a fossil of a dying soul, made out of investiture. That is not a Cognitive Shadow. Most of Shardic infinite investiture is not used by its Vessel, and can't be used because a Vessel isn't infinite and can't reach all of that. But this unused power still belongs to them. But this power has a Vessel – Sazed. Just because he doesn't use it doesn't mean it isn't his. Nobody sees it as "ruinous", it's just there, it isn't "felt" by anybody. Again, it's not a Mist spirit - it's not made out of Mists, and that spirit was Preservation's mind - Leras. Now Sazed is the mind of Harmony. This shadow is dark. Preservation's Mists resemble ordinary mist, so they are white, not dark or black like Ruin's Mists. Mist spirit has never looked like a "shadow". It's the opposite, it looks like a shadow because it's dark. Ruin doesn't mean bad and scary... It's just a force of nature, entropy. It isn't evil. No Shard is. -
Hard to say. First of, Awakened objects perceive the world somewhat similar to Steel Inquisitors, via Steelsight - if you encase the whole arm in aluminum, it won't be able to see and won't move at all. Secondly aluminum has a field effect, it might mean that enough aluminum added to an Awakened object would fully disrupt it and it would just stop working. Whole arm encased in aluminum is impossible. But I personally think if you add some small aluminum plate, some small vambrace, the field effect of it might not be strong enough to disrupt it from working and you won't block its sight. But it has to be somewhat thick to withstand a physical cut from a Shardblade. You can use a stronger aluminum alloy, just like in Mistborn Era 2 they're using it to make bullets and pistols instead of pure aluminum - any aluminum alloy has effects of pure aluminum. If you want to stop Shardblades, just make a thick aluminum shield, not with Awakening. If you want to hold Nightblood, just use an aluminum gauntlet, but you won't get all the benefits of the bond with Nightblood.

What Wax did with the Bands. What do you consider "intuitive leap" to be? Which is the same thing with F-steel - your mind only works faster to allow you to move at those speeds, not to actually allow you to think faster like F-zinc. The only thing F-steel does is allow your senses to keep up with your speed, not to actually think, calculate and analyze situations like F-zinc. Grabbing specific objects from the pile of different objects is not. This is clearly not the case with F-steel. Wrong, he was tapping zinc only when he tapped steel for the first time, during his second time Sazed wasn't tapping zinc. When Sazed tried to remove Marsh's linchpin he wasn't tapping zinc, but it's even unclear if Sazed was still tapping zinc when he tapped steel for the first time - the book doesn't always says when he stopped tapping his metalminds (after the first burst of F-steel it wasn't said that he stopped tapping it and the next mention of F-steel was in the second quoted part when he started to tap it again). WoA ch 58: Even look at the second part, where Sazed was "moving more quickly than Marsh could track" - he wasn't tapping F-zinc anymore, and if Marsh couldn't track him, then Sazed's eyes would not be able to accurately perceive the world - his mind and perception had to be sped up at least a bit to keep up with that speed and spin around jumping Marsh. I've never said it speeds up perception up to the level of F-zinc, only to levels which would allow you to keep up with your physical speed. You can simply move with any speed without worrying that you trip on some rock, run into a pole or not be able to grab something that's just laying on the ground. Per WoB, some of the power of F-steel is siphoned and used to increase your temporal abilities. So yes, it is a physical speed as this increase in perception is almost useless for anything other than moving. Again, this WoB: Another WoB, with just F-steel you can move faster than A-Atium Seer's mind can perceive you and their muscles react to you. You HAVE TO perceive the world faster to be able to do that. Sazed is nowhere near moving as fast as the fastest human without any magical enhancements, why do you assume Sazed, a servant/priest/bookworm would be at the peak of human athletics? An average human moving 2-3 times faster would be just as fast as Usain Bolt in a 100m race. JUST. And Sazed physics might be below average, but let's assume average. And even he isn't near enough for "blurring speed". Which requires having a conscious choice.

It was Ishar who said that, yes, Radiants swearing an Ideal are shortly brought closer to SR then they usually are. RoW ch 111: Shards are omnipresent, their infinite power is omnipresent, but their mind (the Vessel) isn't infinite, the mind is mostly focused in one place. What you see with Cultivation and Odium was their mind focusing in one place. Mistborn spoiler WoB: About a Shard manifesting a physical body: The Spiritual Realm isn't really a place, so Shard traveling or stuff like that doesn't really make sense in the context of the Spiritual Realm. As I've said, the Spiritual Realm is spaceless and timeless. Lots of WoBs for this: Dawnshards aren't Shards, they exist only in one place, they aren't omnipresent. Mistborn:

Oh yeah, I fully agree that Kaladin becoming the Vessel of Honor is a very strong theory. Personally I subscribe to it. Well, there is a problem with this idea - the Spiritual Realm is timeless and spaceless - it doesn't really overlap with any location, it's everywhere, anytime, at once. There is no Spiritual equivalent of Shinovar. It kind of just is. Shards are omnipresent. But that also means that you can Ascend to a Shard from anywhere, as long as you can reach into the Spiritual Realm more than normally. If you can Connect yourself to a Shard, you can Ascend. Kind of. Yes, Shinovar is where humans settled, but at this point Honor wasn't their god, Odium was. Honor was a god of Singers. The switch of gods happened a little bit later. And at that time humans were likely already spreading across Roshar. Yes, that's a good question. Maybe at some point Honor gave a bit of his power into humans, invest them a bit more, similarly to Mistborn spoilers: Humans are definitely tied to Roshar and Honor now. Humans also are invested by Honor, they have more innate investiture in them (meaning their soul is expanded) because of Shardic presence on Roshar. A little bit Cosmere spoiler WoB: Honorspren ARE Splinters of Honor - but they are conscious Splinters, safe Splinters that don't destroy a Shard. Every Spren on Roshar is a Splinter of Honor, Cultivation or Odium or a combination of these three. It's always fun to theorize and discuss it more. I have fun too

If the WoB didn't convince you, then I won't do that. I don't see those 90% you're talking about. And we saw an intuitive leap - Wax in BoM... And why would it do that? Because Feruchemy works like that. Because this is the effect of your spirit web adapting to sudden increase in attribute and making you capable of actually using it. Without that you wouldn't be able to use Feruchemy in many cases. That's just how it works and that was explained in a WoB I gave you. F-steel needs you to perceive the world around with sufficient speed so you can actually keep up with your legs - just like F-iron requires an increase in your muscle and bone strength for your body to uphold the increase in mass, and not break when you become as heavy as building - this is a serious overlap with F-pewter and yet it exists. All of those abilities have to work alone. Yes, because "inhumanly quick" and "at blurring speed" is definitely the sign of "only" 2-3x rate... Throwing dozens of metalminds on the ground and selecting only 2 of them is searching. I suspect medallions wouldn't count as alive yet, they aren't AI, and probably they are something more like a plant, which can't be spiked.

Is it possible for Roshar to run out of Stormlight?
alder24 replied to Soulcaster05's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes, I think that's possible. My personal theory is that the Stormfather will be deadeyed in KoWT, which would stop the Highstorm cycle, start endless Weeping, which would cause floods and Stormlight would no longer be provided to Roshar, which would be generally disastrous, especially for Radiants. There are some suspicious Death Rattles that talk about flood, rain, crying, "failing lights" and "dying storms". -
Any sign of a possible Singer/human romantic relationship?
alder24 replied to Soulcaster05's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes, there are signs - Rlain and Renarin. Yes it is possible, and yes humans and singers can intermix, and yes it was done before - Herdazians and Horneaters are descendants of those relationships. Edit: -
Good point with medallions (if you spike a medallion then maybe you would remove all of its powers ) but a spike is hotwired into your soul. It's connected. And if you think that you can store a power gained from spikes in F-nicrosil, then you can remove those powers via H-aluminum.
-
Yyy they don't metabolize metal? This is just a magical thing that's happening, nothing in your body actually "burns" those metals. I don't think you can store them in Bendalloymind. Maybe iron as that's important mineral for your body, but it depends what F-bendalloy actually does. From google: At best those could be stored, at worse something less.

How much does a Shard's perception of themselves affect their futuresight ?
alder24 replied to Velsii's question in Cosmere Q&A
It's an interesting question that there isn't any solid answer to. I would say Vessel's perception might influence Shard's future vision but in some indirect way. People's perception wouldn't matter. Intent seems to be one of factors that dictates how good a Shard is in precognition, but we don't really know why. And if intent is important, then a Vessel, with his own perception, can change the definition of the intent or even change the intent itself. For example Ruin tried hard to focus Shard's nature into natural decay and entropy, in which he was successful, Rayse on the other hand tried to change the whole intent of Odium into Passion with mixed results. The other factor I think matters is Vessel's mind set - a Vessel needs to actually look for more or less specific outcomes and situations he wants to achieve. If his mind set is fresh, not changed by Shard's intent, like Taravangian is right now, he could see more possibilities than Rayse's mind could have seen. But this is more of a speculation on how it works. I don't think if you think of yourself as being good at predicting the future would help you as a Shard. Maybe if you already have some experience with Fortune, you might be able to quickly learn how to use Shardic precognition, or maybe if your mind is already expanded before Ascension, as a Shard your mind is expanded even more and you can see more (Dawnshard holders?). Some WoBs: Mistborn spoilers: If you want to ask Brandon a question, observe his social media and YT channel. When he announces a new spoiler stream, there is a link in YT video description to a new reddit thread specifically for people to leave their questions there. There probably will be a Yumi spoiler stream soon-ish but that is gonna be about Yumi, not general Cosmere. -
All powers is all powers I'm not seeing aluminum spikes working by stealing something, but placing it in a person would cause disruptions in the spirit web, preventing the use of all invested arts. The other option is that as the spike is passing through a spirit web, it erases all invested arts from it, without getting charged..
-
If you want to spike someone, just use an aluminum spike and remove all their powers. I wonder if such an aluminum spike, that was jabbed into someone who already had 3 spikes, would open them to Hemalurgic control or would aluminum interfere with that too?

Oh wow that looks so good and tasty. Amazing. I love the use of the steel alphabet. Happy b-day to Oscar

The WoB literally said that they overlap when it comes to the bullet time. F-steel gives you faster perception as well as physical speed, so you can keep up to your speed and react to it. In HoA ch 80, Sazed used only Steelmind, grabbed his sack, searched for two specific metalminds, put them on and moved to close the gates - he made conscious to pick specific metalminds after he saw them while using Steelmind. It's impossible to do that without perceiving as fast as you move.
-
Brandon corrected himself later "It's not like the metals, not exactly". She metabolizes food into investiture directly.
-
Returned is a Cognitive Shadow, Cognitive Shadow is a "fossil" of a soul, Allomancy is a Connection to Preservation in the soul - this should be copied, so if the Returned remains in his original body, the they might still be a Mistborn/Feruchemist. Radiants probably not, the bond is most likely broken in the moment of the death. In Lifeless their Breath replaces their soul so this connection is no longer there. The soul of the person is gone.
-
Lift doesn't draw from SR, she turns food directly into investiture. I have no idea how it's comparable to Subsumer, technically that's what Feruchemists do as well.

Just look at my previous post, at the very top there are some useful tips about quoting inside the spoiler box. There is a "Quote" word at the bottom of other people's posts, click it and it will quote that whole post into your response. Or you can use a mouse to highlight a small section of somebody’s post you want to quote - an option “quote this” will appear after you highlight that. You can respond to multiple people in the same post to avoid double posting, by using the “+” button - this will make a new small window appear at the right bottom side of your browser which says “Quote x posts”, clicking it will paste all quotes into your response. His name is El. He's one of the Fused, but a special one as he was stripped of his title and rhythm for suggesting they should have used humans more. We don't know if he will be Odium's champion. Nale isn't a spren, he is a Cognitive Shadow. They are different. A spren is a sentient piece of investiture, while a Cognitive Shadow is a fossil of a dead person's soul. There is a significance, yes, but Radiants of 5th Ideal won't turn into something else. Skybreakers is the name of Nale's order. The words say "I'm the law" but it simply means that "I will decide what's lawful or not". It might, but spiritually and mentally. We don't know what Windrunners 5th Ideal is, it might not be similar to Skybreakers. That's fair, Stormfather can be killed with the use of anti-Stormlight, it would take a lot of it, and I don't know what would happened to the piece of Honor attached to him, but maybe you could just use enough of it to kill Stormfather's mind, without destroying all of it, leaving a power vacuum that Syl could fill. Posible and interesting. I've found it, WoK ch 35: In the place nearest to Honor. That means that where Urithiru is right now is the place closest to Honor - keep in mind Urithiru was built ages before Honor was Splinter so there is no connection between his "body" and Urithiru's placement. I think that's because it's right north of the Valley, where Nightwatcher and Cultivation reside, and we know that Honor and Cultivation were romantically involved so people place the Tower close to the Valley, as the Valley was the place "nearest to Honor" meaning most precious to Honor. Shards really don't perceive any physical distance as they are everywhere at once. Shards’ don’t travel. Honor was Splintered. Splintering means that the Shard and its Vessel was killed and the power of the Shard was separated into many pieces. But that power still exists. That portal is named "perpendicularity". But Perpendicularity wasn't natural; it was summoned by Dalinar, Bondsmith, who has the power to form such a portal. Just because a Shard was Splintered doesn't mean that his power is gone - investiture, like energy, can't be destroyed. It will remain on the planet even if the Shard was Splintered into thousands pieces. Moreover Stormlight is provided by the Stormfather now, who took some of Honor's duties after his death. He can draw investiture from the Spiritual Realm, where most Shardic investiture is located, and pull it into the Physical Realm. This is a Stormlight Archive subforum only, if you want to talk about other books you have to use a spoiler box (that eye icon at the top of your reply section) and use a proper warning before. RoW proved that combining the natures of Odium and Honor is possible. Dalinar is strongly Connected to both Honor and Odium (which is very important), and due to his destructive past, he can understand the nature of Odium and need for it. It's possible to combine Odium and Honor (nothing prevents it from happening) and Dalinar might be able to do that.
-
Well, it's certainly possible, they have a connection and Honor used to be their god, but personally I don't really see any of them getting Honor. They are closer to Cultivation than Honor in my opinion. Without any foreshadowing it's really hard to say who could Ascend among them - we know like 4 of them by the name and only 2 of them were given enough depth and character. I hope we will get more of Listeners in KoWT.
-
Sazed ran to Luthadel in WoA using just his steelminds. WoA ch 16&19: While yes - Marasi "tapped everything" - if she tapped zinc along steel, Wax wouldn't have enough mind speed to think about so many possibilities in between two words his uncle was speaking. And Wax said that steelmind was almost empty - zincmind would be empty as well. And there is a temporal effect associated with F-steel. So yes, F-steel allows you to move around with your brain being capable of perceiving what's going on around you like you were moving with a normal speed. F-zinc is different, it makes you better at making logical leaps and doing math.
-
You can do that: That would give you much more attribute than what compounding gives you, because the Dor used as a fuel for Allomancy makes it stronger than normal. Likely only in Feruchemy can Dor be used as a fuel for god metals. In Allomancy a god metal is the fuel and that's what gives you this power - you can't replace this with something else.
-
I will provide some WoBs. Spren or Roshar and Seon/Skaze on Sel are both Splinters bonding via the same mechanism, but what's given by this bond is determined by what's "inside" Splinter's soul. Seon/Skaze won't give you access to Rosharan Surgebinding, they're already giving you something else (but it might be possible to squeeze some powers from them). Moreover you can summon Seon/Skaze as a Shardblade, but you would need something more to pull them into the Physical Realm:
-
Honestly, I have no idea. Yes, investiture resists investiture, spren are very invested but you don't try to Awaken spren, just give them some Breaths. Breaths are a gift that adapts to the receiver's identity, they don't really seem to care about people's investiture and it seems there is no conflict between investitures in people's souls. But spren are different from people, they are Splinters, much more invested than people and without a physical body. The fact that spren do not manifest a physical body in normal circumstances might be problematic, as Breaths are mainly physical. However spren theoretically can pick up a Shard and Ascend so I think spren can be given Breaths (given, not Awakened). There might be some changes in spren's nature or personality if you give them enough Breaths, but that would be quite a lot. Having more Breaths doesn't make your Awakening more powerful - spren wouldn't grant more powerful Surges also because those two things are completely different. There is a part of a spren’s soul responsible for powers and Breaths don’t change that.
