Which is more or less leveled with Basin's access to tens of thousands of Mistings and Ferrings - that's what Steris' trade idea was about (also Malwish weren't united back then). There is a room for growth of some hostilities and untrust, of course there is, but that's not even close to "they have the means to immediately wipe us out of existence with the Bands".

Why could lift heal people in RoW?
alder24 replied to Walter The Moral's topic in Stormlight Archive
Lift is weird. She didn't feel the suppression fabrial at all, unlike Kaladin, and as you said, she couldn't use either Abrasion or Progression at first. With Progression she felt some resistance, through which she was able to break and heal. Lift's spirit web is messed up by Cultivation, she exists partially in the CR, and those are the reasons why she didn't feel any suppression and could heal others - creating her own Lifelight is definitely a factor. It also might be that Progression is the truest Surge of Cultivation (but this doesn't exclude Odium's forces from using it, and even with Adhesion there is a bias on Fused side). RoW ch 39: I-5: -

Now hide his quote in your post in a spoiler box! If you have a question you should always start your own topic, instead of asking in Amira's thread - she is currently reading OB and any discussion about future events risks spoiling the book for her. Just start a new topic in the SA section or Cosmere Q&A (best place for a quick question). The answer to your question is, RoW spoilers: -
I don't think so. If there is, they will be massacred. Ishar with Bondsmith unbound powers is just on another level. And while Nightblood is a terrifying weapon, Bondsmith unbound is far more dangerous. Their main objective is to swear an oath in Ishar's presence and talk to sane him, then find a way to bring that sane Ishar for longer so he could help Dalinar - all of that in less than 10 days. I think Kaladin's skill as a therapist will come in handy, even though Ishar's madness is magical. I'm guessing Szeth will swear his Crusade Ideal when they find Ishar, not earlier, as right now he is ready to swear it - 10 days for Kaladin to reach the last Ideal isn't enough.

Are horses and Ryshadium originally not from Roshar?
alder24 replied to Soulcaster05's topic in Stormlight Archive
Lots of different species of chickens birds, various livestock (mostly hogs, sheeps and horses), minks, moles, rats and even cats. Dogs likely not, because Kaladin in RoW ch 80 didn't recognise that word, or they simply didn't make it out of Shinovar too. Very harsh environment. Most of those animals stayed in Shinovar, as Shinovar was made to resemble Ashyn/Earth, with soil there and mild Highstorms. But outside of Shinovar there is no soil, just naked rock and Highstorms, with hurricane-like winds, coming every few days. Most Earth animals just can't survive without any protection from Highstorms and they can't dig into rocks. I have no idea how wild Ryshadium survived, but that's most likely because of their Nahel Bond. But some did expand out of Shinovar. Most notably moles are present in snowy mountains around Urithiru, mink's skeleton was seen by Kaladin in OB ch 10, and alive in some other places, rats were also seen or were mentioned here and there. And of course livestock but those are cared for by humans, not living out in the wild. Generally some small animals that can find and hide in cracks in rocks or near human settlements. RoW ch 13: -
Are horses and Ryshadium originally not from Roshar?
alder24 replied to Soulcaster05's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes, horses are from Ashyn, just like every soft-skinned animal. You're right, everything with shells and carapace is native to Roshar (created by Adonalsium with Roshar itself). Ryshadium are an oddity as they are horses which over time have adapted, evolved and formed a bond with spren. WoBs: Hoid's home planet is Yolen - it is a source of possibly all Earth-like life in Cosmere, including humans. But that was pre-Shattering. -
Yes, but in the recent Shardcast interview with Brandon he said that his team isn't pleased with Reddit and they're looking for alternatives (link with timestamp to that part).

Looking at the last YT Frugal spoiler stream, there was an earlier announcement of the incoming stream and in its description there was a link to the reddit thread from which questions were taken. Sometimes questions are answered from YT comments or other media during the stream. Generally you have to look out for an announcement of a spoiler stream and ask your question in the reddit thread. I know Brandon is planning to do a spoiler stream for every SP, so there should be one for Yumi soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYIs7Nn3JaQ

Medallions are not the same as unlimited Fullborn powers. It's possible that the decoy Bands could serve as a ignition point between the Basin and Malwish - just one side thinking that the other had the Bands would be enough. Overall, I think we can all agree that all this staff with the temple, the Bands and Kelsier's involvement in it is really unclear and suspicious. There is a secret there to uncover.

SA 5 spoilers: The Sons of Honor are way older than Jasnah, Teft reported Envisagers to authorities when he was 8, he was in his fifties at the end, and Envisagers originated from the Sons of Honor. It's really hard to say. Gavilar started to talk about the importance of words and Radiants in OB ch 49, 23 years ago, when Jasnah was 12 and was suffering, so he definitely started receiving visions around this time or even earlier, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he already had some contact with the Sons of Honor or was a member of them. But we have no clear timeline of this and nothing solid on when he met the Sons of Honor. OB ch 49: I was rather suggesting that those episodes that came from Ivory, like wrong shadows, or her seeing stuff, had been happening to her since childhood, without any strong bond between them.

Least Favorite Cosmere Works
alder24 replied to Ravenclawjedi42's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Really? It's like picking your least favorite child! You're breaking my heart! I can't do it - White Sand. That's because it's a graphic novel, and it just loses something in that form. It is readed too fast, it's short and misses a lot. I haven't read the prose version, maybe it would change my opinion a bit. But I have to shamefully admit that Elantris would probably be my second pick - don't get me wrong, I like it of course, I really enjoy reading it, but I always have a really hard time getting myself to reread it. I've been planning to reread it for a year now and I'm still not even close to starting rereading. My least favorite series is again White Sand, but I'm not sure if we can call it a series yet. Except for Mistborn era 1, Mistborn era 2 and SA, the rest is just standalone for now. For the novella it'sThe Hope of Elantris. But is it really a novella? Excluding those really short stories (The Hope of Elantris, The Eleventh Metal and Allomancer Jak) it's a much harder pick, as I've enjoyed all of them. In that case I would probably pick Sixth of the Dust, but with a truly broken heart. Someone voted for Secret History? That was unexpected. I'm really curious why. -
Good catch. But gold and red coloration appears here and there in Cosmere, it might indicate some connection to Autonomy, or it's just an artistic choice. However Lightsong (his colors are red and gold) is very "autonomous" Returned, always doing the opposite of what's expected from him, so I bet Autonomy would appreciate him a lot. Maybe that's why his colors are red and gold? Brandon planned this all along!

discussion What does reputation mean to you? [poll]
alder24 replied to Koloss17's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
It's been almost a year now since I voted in this poll. Now I have no idea how I vote but I'm quite sure my answers have changed at least a bit. Question 1: How often do you give rep? Question 2: How often are you on the shard? Question 3: What does reputation mean to me? Not really. I just "judge" based on what a person is writing, and if they write something interesting, or detailed, it picks my attention. But I look at the titles of people I discuss often with - it's nice to see them Ascending. The system is broken! I lost (or got undeservingly) a few winning days thanks to that - I got a win, and a few days later the leaderboard got updated and I'm off the podium entirely. The "past leaders" section counts reputation differently than the "specific day leaderboard" section, and it looks like the "past leaders" is the one giving awards. It's even funnier because not even admins understand the logic of it. But I like the idea, it's fun and rewarding for people who contribute a lot. Sometimes when I'm bored I just see who got the most likes this week and I just check them up. I know I won't be winning anyway, so I don't really feel any competitive urge or anything like that. I think it should definitely stay. -
Why doesn't Shallan heal with Stormlight in WoR?
alder24 replied to Soulcaster05's topic in Stormlight Archive
This particular section you quoted was when she found Tvlakv, slept at his firecamp and just woke up - the trunk was still on the beach where she was left by santhid. But later she indeed constantly feels pain from her injured feet. Inexperience. At that point she still knew next to nothing about her Radiant powers and she could simply not know that Stormlight heals. Also healing takes time, so when she was using light for illusions, she would heal only a bit before running out of Stormlight. At first spheres were charged when Shallan opened the trunk but they were going dim a few days later (ch 17). But on occasion, she did accidentally breathe in Stormlight, create a faint illusion on herself, and with that also heal her feet a tiny bit - WoR ch 15: A day later she realized that she heals faster than she should have, and asked Pattern about it, ch 17: But she still had no shoes, and she was constantly walking and straining her feet, wounding them again and again. Any bits of healing done by an accident would be undone after a day of walking on rocks. She healed again when she was convincing Vathah's group to help her, but that, and Lightweaving of her, used up all of her remaining light, ch 20: ch 21: After that she got a pair of slippers from Macob. There was also a storm in the meantime (Kaladin's chapter 22, if they are in chronological order) and a few chapters later, 28, she got boots from Kaladin - between that there was no mention of her feet. Ch 28: So the answer is she didn't know at first, then she realized something is going on after she Lightweave accidentally in front of Tvlakv, and healed her feet a bit, but her spheres were already going dim, and she decided to use remaining light to Lightweave and persuade Vathah's bandits instead of healing herself. Then she might have charged spheres during Highstorm, used light to heal her feet fully (as there was no mention of pain and her injured feet after rescuing Macob's caravan, in ch 24 and 28) and she also got a pair of slippers, and Kaladin's boots, which prevented her from wounding her feet again. -

In the middle of a planet sized nowhere. Good luck finding it. No, the Bands need to be there for the conflict to arise, one side needs to get this weapon for the other side to worry, distrust the other, and pursue technological progress to offset this disadvantage. Without the Bands the first contact would end peacefully, with a trade agreement just like Steris wanted - both sides have something to trade, but if one side has the Bands, the other can't have them and will feel threatened. The Bands are a weapon of mass destruction. We know nothing about, all we can do is speculate. I don't think there was just a single reason for placing the Bands in the temple, but several reasons, because if somebody wanted to just hide them, as you pointed out, there are better ways to accomplish this. This is far more complex than “just hide the Bands”.

When did the protagonist gain a definining feature?

It's Kelsier, as they both look like Kelsier and have the spike in the eye, and Kelsier is the person depicted on the coin and on the statue in the temple. And I've forgotten to give you WoB: He had around 10 years to make himself a new body, and that's plenty of time for him. That's steelsight, not just Allomantic lines. It's because he has a spike in his eye, and just like Inquisitors see steel lines, and that not only when they burn steel/iron, but all the time - he sees them too, just like Inquisitors. Hemalurgic spike changes the body, and a spike in the eye results in gaining permanent steelsight, which replaces the lost eye. The lines are not because of Allomancy. Warbreaker spoilers: A foundation of a new religion. He might want to influence the Malwish in some way and religion is just a tool. Malwish would immediately recognise a spike in one eye, as that's a prominent image of their religion and history. I bet they would recognise the scars with ease too - Kel show them to Malwish. He simply didn't know where the Bands were. Searching the entire planet for something so small is really hard. Or it was Kelsier who hid them there and he did this, and spread rumors of them, to force early first contact between Malwish and the Basin, leading to conflict that will speed up technological progress on Scadrial - which is one of his goals. But it still sounds weird to me to leave a weapon like that in the middle of nowhere, when Ghostbloods gather all kinds of weapons including pure Dor.

No, they were not. On top of plateaus there are buildings covered with crem, which now look like some rock mounds on top of plateaus, most visible on Narak, where Parshendi are living in those buildings. The crem buildup was only big enough to raise the ground level only to the second floor of buildings. WoR I-1: WoR ch 68: WoR ch 83:

That's not so simple. First off, they can't make a medallion that gives more than 3 powers. Secondly medallions with some physical attributes, like speed, strength, mental speed etc, are also suspiciously missing. Thirdly, there are no medallions that grant Allomantic powers. Moreover Medallions seems to be one way use only - we've never seen a medallion that was both tapped and stored. Medallions are far more limited than we used to believe after BoM. TLM ch 9: The Bands of Mourning are the only exception, but we don't know how they were made. Hemalurgy not only has no such restrictions, but also recently got a major breakthrough - not only can you spike without killing, you can also take raw investiture and program it to grant you invested powers. As Moonlight pointed out, this could lead to creation of spikes with just raw investiture, like Dor, without need to steal anything from living beings. That's big, there definitely will be a bigger progress and use of spikes in the future. Kelsier will definitely research more in that direction. BoM ch 47: There is a few problems with that. Firstly, Hemalurgically acquired traits are not passed down on your kids, instead, there would be some complications. Secondly, every Hemalurgic spike causes some harm to you, some deformations, mental impairment etc - it will always hurt you, and damage your soul. Thirdly, using Hemalurgic spikes to grant attributes, like strength, will likely cause massive deformation, like we saw with Koloss, or Chimaras - we've never seen a spike with an attribute that didn’t result in drastic deformations, and physical or mental changes. You can't create a new species, as without constant supply of new spikes this species will die (like Koloss in Era 1, they started breeding true only because Sazed changed them), and traits gained with Hemalurgy won't be passed down onto their kids. At best new Hemalurgic Constructs will be made (that's for sure), and Hemalurgy will be used to improve individuals by giving them powers, not attributes (like it was already used). It doesn't run out, it behaves like a coppermind, and they don't run out of attributes.

Those memories are certainly Kelsier's memories - it's from his perspective. It's possible there might be more coins like that. But Kelsier didn't want those memories to be known - this begs the question, why did he stored them? One answer I can think of is that it's the memory that was meant to stay among Malwish, as part of their religion and culture, but it wasn't meant to get to the Basin. If Kelsier stored this memory in a single coin, Malwish could likely copy them to other metalminds with their Excisor. But the existence of this coin is as suspicious as the Bands being hidden in the temple near New Seran - why did he make the Bands and later hid them in such an inaccessible place so close to Elendel? There is more to Kelsier and the Sovereign than we know of and I wouldn't be surprised if had a bit of a rift with Spook or some of his new crew members that resulted in them stealing the Bands and coins away from him.

4 Shard, a cool concept that's probably impossible
alder24 replied to Shadow of Electrum's topic in Stormlight Archive
Windrunner and Edgedancer's oaths would work together quite well, Elsecaller and Truthwatcher's oaths should work well as well (both orders have more scholarly focus) but Windrunner and Elsecaller's oaths would most likely work not so well - just look at Kaladin and Jasnah clash in OB when discussing what to do with Heralds and Singers. That's the problem with bonding multiple spren of different orders (aside from actually finding willing spren to share you), you need to embrace both ideals and some orders, like Windrunners and Skybreakers, would have a really hard time combining them together. But this is highly dependent on the individual, you definitely could find a person who would have no troubles at combining Ideals of even the most conflicted orders. Please, avoid double posting, it's against the forum's rules.
