  1. I noticed that too. Isn't that similar though to the one later in the text?
  2. Both WoK and WoR speak of the Giant Chasmfiends as coming up to the plateaus to pupate, and that the Crysalis needs to be exposed to a Highstorm so my guess is they are like the Listeners and need to bond with a new spren and will end up changing forms... I don't want to imagine what the Everstorm would do to them, but maybe the large effect will be good for humans with the Everstorm present
  3. my second read of WoK was Character by Character so Just Kaladin then Just Dalinar finally Just Shallan. not a good tactic for an initial read but in the rereads it gives a clearer insight into the individual characters. Though at the end when the they start intermingling you either read the whole chapter each time or you break them up.
  4. 1: Newcago - That would likely depend on the type of steel. If it is not the right composition no charging/tapping could be done. Assuming, that it is this right stuff you could likely charge and tap the city. I believe there isn't a upper boundary on size (no WoB that i am aware of but we could get some), but I suspect there would be lag based on how far apart the charge and tap sites are, or if the charge fills the city evenly. (personal suspicion only. I like "b" for how charging Newcago would work.) a: Even if the investiture stays put where is was charged and then flows as fast as electricity (about the speed of light) to you, tapping away from the charging point would result in lag, but it would require a lot before it was noticeable. This would result in no power for a moment then it will be there like normal. b: If the charge fills the city evenly tapping would experience the above lag as the investiture flows back toward you. This would result in instant power but it would be slightly less as it comes to you from every inch of the city. 2: Metaldust - No idea what the lower boundary would be. Likely it would need to be big enough it could be thought of (cognitively) as the desired metal. so my guess a invisble speck is too small. Though if you burned iron of steel in Newcago would you see a single line? or hundreds of billions?
  5. What if using Lerasium rewrites your sDNA to give you connection to the world you are on at the time you use it? and therefore access to that world's investiture. use it on Scadrial = Alloymancy Use it on Sel = Selish power based on location at time of use. Use it on Talidan = Sand Mastery Etc. That would be something Hoid would be excited to have access to. This would be in line with Atium via hemalurgy being able to steal all powers regardless of investiture. i.e. Laresaium can grant (likely through a feruchemical process, but that just me) all powers regardless of investiture. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Harmonium (likely by burning it as of the Southern Scadrian's vessels i.e. Allomantically) could being used to fuel all powers regardless of investiture as well. But that gets into the realm of crazy. NOTE: Only the use of Atium is confirmed the others are my speculations.
  6. Edgedancer Spoiler:
  7. Following are my thoughts on this matter: (started form Argent's post about Spren History.) I realize little of this might not be new for some of you, I am sorry if nothing here is novel for the group. A quick search for Nahel brings up the Arabic name which loosely translates as "[One/He/She] who quenches its thirst". As the spelling is exactly the same I am inclined to believe this is a clue as to why the bonds are formed. ALL spren thirst for physical experience. It was discovered that by connecting themselves with physical beings they are able to get those experiences. I disagree with the common thought that the bond brings them closer to the physical realm. I believe that spren can jump into the physical as wind spren don't seem to have a bond but they are in the the physical realm to some extent and able to minimally interact with physical things. The bond allows them to experience it in a very different way then just observing and minimal interactions. BTW I am on board with Argent's postulate that ALL bonds grant surgebinding especially in context that a Selish person with a bonded Aon (that was able make the jump to Roshar) would have access to some form of Surges. The higher spen is the higher a creature needs to be to fill this need. The Radiant Spren NEED more then a skyeel, cremling, or greatshell to quench their thirst. They need something intelligent and self aware. I suspect they couldn't bond with the listeners until the Shards came and the ambient magic system (think of the birds on First of the Sun) moved into a actively wielded magic system. Then the Radiant Spren started bonding with the native race, but then moved on to humans when they were shown they could get better experiences from more physical beings possibly from seeing how much more powerful the Heralds were. They may have surmised that Humans could wield the surges more powerfully and deduced that meant they would get better/stronger experiences. Following this I believe that a human will always outstrip a Listener in power because as the Spren gets more it can give more. The only reason Void spren are not bonding forcibly with Humans to get the better/stronger experiences is the fact that the further from the cognitive realm a being is the more free it will be to reject the bond. but this gets off topic slightly. TLDR: Spren thirst for physical experience, they can get minimal experience just by interacting with the world, but get more by bonding with a physical being. The word Nahel is used to hint at this relationship as the bonds quenches this thirst. It is easier to bond with unintelligent / unaware creatures, but less is gained for the spren and less is granted in return.
  8. It will be revealed that the First Desolation was actually Honor seeking to Conquer Roshar a place for "His" humans and the Listeners turned to Odium to save them. but their deal with the devil backfired. ...
  9. I fully agree. I do have a thought: Why is it referred to as a separate phenomenon? In world it makes sense as most rosharians don't realize spen bond with other creatures. But do we have of out of world references (WOB's, statements form worldhoppers, etc.) that would imply a difference does exist. Do we have any idea WHY it is referred to as "Nahel"?
  10. Conservation of Energy based magic system: Core powers: Channel energy from one source to another. I.E. if you have 100 cups of water you can draw 1 Joule of heat from each one and channel it into another cup raising its's energy by 100 joules. Temperature increase of course would be influenced by normal thermodynamics. Core energies currently fall into two categories Internal and External. Internal deals with Strength and Weakness in various traits and the channeled trait will revert once you stop actively influencing the shift. I.E. make your arms weaker to strengthen you legs. External are phenomenon outside of the practitioner and the channeled energy remains even after the channel is closed. Initiation: Overcoming specific challenges (Each power has different powers) cause the gods to grant a totem this totem is keyed to an individual and only that person can use it. (it is possible to have multiple powers at once) If you use the power too strongly the totem can break, of they can be stolen or lost. Either way the powers cannot be used until it is recovered. Flaws and Limitations: 1. Energy can not be changed I.E. Heat cannot channeled and Motion influenced at least not directly. To make something move faster Motion will need to be drawn from things around you. 1.a. Internal Traits cannot be traded. I.E. If you lose Muscle Strength you only gain Muscle Strength. 2. Practitioners can only focus one end of the channel I.E. Heat from the environment into target, OR Heat from a target into the environment. NEVER from a target to another target. 2.a. If your totem lets you influence heat one way you cannot earn the totem for the other way. 3. Even if the challenges are completed again a second totem will never be granted for the same power. IF anybody has ideas for a direct cost to the practitioner for using the powers let me know
  11. I actually see him more as a Cinderella. He comes in and rises in prominence as he seeks to save the people, falls into the shadow of Dilaf and then falls under his rule, and then right at the end he rises again to be the hero and savior he had previously though he would be.
  12. I have thought that Vo (the First Returned) was Austre ... and this makes me wonder if he could be both.
  13. TANGENT: Gummi Bears... that is my favorite kid's show ever. Now if only Disney would release the second half in the US.
  14. Off Topic: What is going to happen to Shinovar when the Everstorm hits? i suspect their whole culture is going to have issues as the dirt will be stripped away and there will only be stone to walk on.
  15. Aabsolutely. In the past I have taken 6-7 books (i try to limit how many so the line can keep moving) but I have heard of people taking dozens of books to get signed. @Pagerunner is right. Although Brandon doesn't limit the number signings, the locations might. It is always best to double check. As i attend the midnight signings at BYU I don't always think about that.
  16. in SA it does mention that seeds planted in the crem thrive better
  17. NO he is not in Sixth of Dusk I confirmed that at the Arcanum Unbounded signing. Sanderson told me Hoid will not make appearances (though he may be referenced.) in most of the shorts and novellas. IIRC correctly he ONLY makes an appearance Arcanum Unbounded in Mistborn: Secret History (Is he in Allomancer Jak?) And he is referenced only in Edgedancer and The Emperor's Soul.
  18. Endowment not Empowerment. Nightblood was formed by people with knowledge of shardblades. So having said that Nightblood would be similar to a living spren blade but much more powerful.
  19. @The One Who Connects thank you i spent hours on that thread. now to delve into that line more.
  20. Fair enough. Though if there are not ten levels of voidbinding, the diagram at the back of WoK is poorly named. (I realize BS has not yet named it and the "voidbinding chart" is just a 17th shard reference) I like the idea it is connected to the old magic, or fabrial creation some how. (Side topic)
  21. From Ars Arcanum: (thank you to @ccstat for the quote) But the more important thought is that ten is not applicable to Odium. Hence my thought that void binding is not originally his.
  22. Has anyone thought about the fact that there are ten levels of void binding BUT 10 is not the number tied to ODium there are not 10 unmade, and likely odium doesn't have 10 core values such as honor does, so why ten levels of voidbinding? I suspect the Ten-Deaths, and levels of voidbinding are direct corruptions of the surges and Heralds not something inherently different. Argent Interview for WOBs
  23. I could buy Science Fantasy, but i think the feel is more in the Epic Fantasy range that bleeds toward the end of the spectrum Space Opera especially as we approach Mistborn era 4.
  24. I asked this same question a month or two ago. There seems to be little to no actual correlation behind the symbols. Other then the basic design elements. dots - Allomanticbeads arcs - Feruchemical bands spikes - Hemalurgic spikes IF you find out more let me know. al lot of us would be interested in your findings. But it might be wise to look up the steel alphabet on the Coppermind as a starting point for the older versions of the characters.
  25. Hasn't Brandon said that it won't be until Mistborn era 4 that we get overt overlap between systems? I suspect that while the events of the SA effect the cosmere we will be able to enjoy the whole SA by itself without significant knowledge from other worlds being needed.
