How similar is Allomantic Mist compared to Surgebinding Stormlight?
Tsidqiyah replied to atiummisting17's topic in Mistborn
Cross use of Investiture is like trying to use North American electronics in Europe. I.E. it is not going to work without an adapter. So to answer the question I think we need to look at the two investitures (p.s. selish magic systems are analogous DC batteries; while Roshar, Scadrial and Nalthis are analogous to AC wall outlets) Scadrial: Using (burning, store/tap, spiky) metals are like a key opening a channel for investiture from Harmony in the spiritual realm to the user. The type of METAL lenses (catalyzes) the investiture for a specific purpose Roshar: Investiture is somehow drawn from Honor’s dispersed reminants (maybe also from Cultivation to some extent) in the spiritual and cognitive realms via the Highstorms. This investiture is then captured in gem stones and breathed in by someone with a bond. The Honorblade BOND or Spren BOND lenses (catalyzes) the investiture into specific surges. Allomancers do not normally use the mists in fact we have only seen one or two do it. I don’t think just anybody can do it, Harmony/Preservation has to want you to use his power directly. As such I don’t think a radiant can use the mist. Alternately allomancers do not use investiture directly as such I don’t believe Stormlight can be used to fuel alomancy. t should be noted that with the exception of Hoid the only cross use we have seen is direct to direct exchanges. (I.E. Stormlight instead of Breath). Hoid has/had Laresium. So his cross use is not surprising.- 13 replies

Is The Calamity ending "bad"? And why? (NO SPOILERS PLS)
Tsidqiyah replied to AlexLas95's topic in The Reckoners
@AlexLas95 i don't know if you still want info here but my 2cents Personally i had no issues with the ending and actually loved the way epilogue leaves the story. BUT the three biggest complaints are that it: Felt Rushed. (But this is Sanderson's style this is just a different type of rushed) Was very Deus-Ex-Machina (Unless you guessed the deeper theme. All I will say on that is remember classic superhero comics were the inspiration for this series) Has a feeling of being incomplete. (Again this is vaguely reminiscent of the way comic books end leaving it open for the next instalment... at least the ones i have read) I will say read it and make your own opinions Also Apocalypse Guard is the same Multiverse and takes place after the events of Calamity but it is not a sequel trilogy. It may only have cameos of these characters if they show up at all. -
We see this type of “door” design in the real world with certain types of security checkpoints and air locks in labs (tech, chem and bio). You enter and the whole chamber rotates until the opening you entered lines up with a second exit. Cumbersome and complicated yes but it can add an added layer protection against void bringers using the gates (are there such things as voidblades?) Yes it is reasonable to expect the other "Settings" should send you to those places. and i don't have a good reason beyond quantum entanglement. hopefully Oathbringer teaches us more about fabrils and the surge theory.
-
First off my personal representational is that each Oathgate was a bonded pair; otherwise there wouldn't need to be ten in Urithiru. This is based on in book passages and the fact that Sanderson loves basing magical effects on real world physics in this case quantum entanglement (i see the oathgate as a massive variant of the span reeds where each reed is bound to a single other one). Now starting with that assumption a couple of thoughts. If I were to ship goods by land from mexico to Canada i would likely end up paying tariffs to enter the USA. These taxes have noting to do with the transportation company and everything to do with the middle country. I suspect the oathgate trade was the same idea. The knights running the gates may or may not have been on the city payroll but either way you wouldn't need everyone's support. All you need to do is leave transportation via the gates free and charge a tax to pass through the city from one gate to the next. The speed that goods could be moved (less than a day vs weeks) was initially better then any added cost (likely the cost was initially smaller anyway when you factor food shelter and guards for a caravan.) but once everybody is using them the city government hikes up the rates and trader must keep using the gates or lose the advantage. again only the city administration need to agree on this tax and if this tax was the only monetary input for the city it would be easy to see a tax hike to pay for this or that project.

Powers are not always tied to fears, Take Steelheart and Joel similar power sets vastly different weaknesses. In a different thread (i'll edit when i find it) i talked about my Shard. A similar epic would be fun. CONSERVATION: Power set: ability to adsorb, redirect, and channel thermal, kinetic, electromagnetic, and gravitational forces. Limitation is that i can't store the energy. In other words i can lower the temperature of a hundred cups of water by 1 joule each and increase the temperature of a separate cup by those SAME 100 joules. if i slow something down something else has to speed up (friction and other forces of physics cannot be ignored. remember i am only dealing with the energy itself) as far a radiation i cannot just make a ball of light by absorbing from direct sunlight i have have something(glass marble works)radiate that radiation. Weakness: Heights, of more specificly falling but my powers would weaken if i got too close to an unguarded edge that had potential for me to fall from.

How are the heralds superior to the Knights Radiant?
Tsidqiyah replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
The heralds were the pattern Spren used to create the KR. the Heralds are essentially Cognitive Shadows, who (if you ascribe to certain theories here) channeled power directly from Honor (hence why they use up more stormlight the blades now depend on an inferior fuel). Lastly they were not bound by the oaths of the orders and were at least for a while apart from the orders. There is a WoB that Nale was the last Harald to accept an order. as such they are not as limited in how to act. NInjaed -
Crowd of worldhoppers - why they are not mentioned?
Tsidqiyah replied to Hyarmenatan's topic in Stormlight Archive
Physical beings and exit their world relatively easily. The spren can only follow if certain requirements are met. This is true for all cognitive shadows and denizens of the cognitive realm, which may be in part why so many seek to bond to a physical being. (Pet theory is the shades of Thredony are not trying to kill but are trying to bond humans and breaking the simple rules attracts them because only physical beings can do those things.) A WoB indicated that a Selish person bonded to a Seon would have different surges on Roshar BUT it would require a hack to get the Seon there in the first place. So while a KR could worldhop they would have to leave their spren behind and likely their ability to return, Unless they could still use their powers away from their spren. As for Jasnah to get out to the cognitive realm she still had to find a perpendicularity. It was also unexpected that she entered so completely in the first place. So i suspect there is more to it then the case of having access to the surge of transportation. -
Like all Selish magic Forging (I will use capital F to denote the magic system from the mundane) depends on regional connection and identity. This appears to be both a blood and birthplace requirement (physical identity and cognitive identity). Unlike AonDor this is a system that apparently can be learned IF the regional requirement is met first. It should be noted that we don't know enough to say for sure what that requirement is and there is a possibility it can be learned by anybody but only in MaiPon.

@Weltall how have i not read those thank you.

Three things need to be considered here: The priests past and present, and their returned The need/desire for a blood Heir The Treaty itself First off, there are two sets of priests: the God-Kings Priests and the other priests. For the most part these priests are more politician than religious adviser, or defenders of doctrine. Even those serving the God-King have the primary purpose of protecting the hoard of breaths from being abused. Also remember that outside of the GKPriests many of the current priesthood were not around when the treaty was signed, as priests come and go with the Returned they serve. I am sure a few are still there (a core set of professional priests), but the feeling I got was this would be a limited group. From the few interactions Siri had with the current priests they seem to be 50/50 for and against war. But it is also mentioned that the earlier generation of returned were more beneficial which would imply so were their priests. So my guess the past events were either being influenced by the Phan-Khal (VERY LIKELY) toward a future war. or just political posturing for increased power to the priests. Second the priests don't actually need a blood heir. According to the Coppermind (Article on Vo) they indeed know how to have it happen, though i suspect only the GKPriests have the secret. (This was uncited so if anyone has the WOB/source I would love to see it). But they don't even want a mortal heir; they want a returned one. As the priests outside the God-King's palace are not likely in on the whole baby swap the treaty was formed to honestly provide an heir with the royal locks. As was stated earlier the only ones that know about this whole baby swap is the GK-Priests. So while the whole royal blood heir may be a honest intent for the other priests, The GKPriests are going to continue with the facade as it has stood for 300 years anyway. And if they knew how to sire a child you can bet they knew how a returned could change appearance at will so faking the locks wouldn't be a problem. Lastly, looking at both of the above points we can figure the treaty was exactly what is originally appeared to be. a way to give the God-King legitimacy in the eyes of his people. The Halladrien populace seemed to be against war as much as the Idrians were afraid of it, but the Phan-Khal machinations drove them to feel it was necessary. The Halladrens had an army that would have cost no lives and required no supply chains. Replacing the soldiers would have been expensive but that is money that the open trade routes war would have provided would have made back quickly. War was an all win for them, likely even 20 years earlier. The only thing war would not provide is the desire for legitimacy that is a core facet of human nature. so I have to assume that truly was the intent the treaty. TLDR: The priests are more politicians that understood human nature, and the desire to believe our actions are legitimate. The treaty was built to provide legitimacy to their "rebellion" by giving their king royal blood, but the God Kings Priests were going to continue the traditions one way or another as there is no guarantee that Siri would have a child that would return.

I liked Elantris but, I need help liking it more
Tsidqiyah replied to Xero stormz's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Something to remember is that because it was his first book. he wrote it to be a stand alone, one-and-done type novel. while the Cosmere was planned he had no idea if anybody would like it. So he had to be careful about promising to much with other world/book connections. Sanderson did say he didn't really learn how to do the multiple viewpoints until he was working on the WoT books. As such there is some choppyness with that as well. Lastly it was already mentioned that he hadn't completely found his voice yet so the signature hook wasn't truly a thing yet. hence it was weak in this book. As for likeing it more, I can't help you. IMO it is one of the weaker books and while it (or at least Sel) will be important to the Cosmere as a whole it will have to wait for it's sequels before we actually see a decent sized picture of how. Interestingly I loved the Emperors Soul. So maybe I am just prejudiced against first books. -
Brandon Sanderson ... hmm is there a wrong option here. OK bad example.

How did people forget about the D'denir being Kalad's phantoms?
Tsidqiyah replied to Arcoss's topic in Warbreaker
This is a phenomenon that occurs regularly in our world. The knowledge of the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Persians was lost to later generations and historians are still lost as to why and how. But in as little as two generations whole swaths of knowledge can be lost. -
I fight depression but unlike a lot of people i can't use medication to treat it. As such I do have to say it is harder to overcome and recover completely, but it is possible, and i hope to see that in Kaladin's future. If anybody wants to talk about depression, PM me. It took years but i not longer avoid that part of my identity, and am will to help you through yours or just discuss mine.

@Reborn radiant Secret History Spoilers: @MierinxWhat Postscripts are you referencing in your OP. IIRC The Band of Mourning epilogue is wax "Seeing" the memory of Sovereign, with scars on his arms, telling the southern Scadrians to "Survive". If this is not Kel I will eat Wayne's hat... But as I have gone through the era 2 books I don't think we have any other specific hint to Kelsier... though maybe some of the stuff attributed to the kandra are actually him. As for Spook's life span. He governed for a century, but this length of lifespan could have been normal for mistborn. Remember that during the final empire mistborn were actively ignored but the fact that Gamel is the only OLD one we see it is possible that they have "preserved" lifespans and inter-house conflicts killed most years before their time. If not then the life span is most likely due to experimentation with Hemalugy. and I don't mess with spikes. Either way IMO whenever Spook or the Lord Mistborn is mentioned would be good places to look for Kel.

Fullborn vs Composite Surgebinder
Tsidqiyah replied to MONARCH's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I was going to bring up the Leecher quality of chromium, but i can't find confirmation on if Chomium can drain other investitures or just allomantic stores. but if it could just drain the infinite stormlight from the surgebinder with your infinite supply of Chomium... And even if the fullborn did get lashed upwards can't a he store that investiture? (nicrosil again) or would the lashing's investiture not be identified with the fullborn and still identify with the surgebinder? Hopefully both combatants are smart enough not to allow the other to touch them. In that case the FULLBORN, with better understood ranged powers, will be the winner. -
There was/is speculation that Endowment started returning people about the same time Harmony came into Being. Possibly as a response to a double shard.

How FTL (faster than light) travel could happen?
Tsidqiyah replied to Herdazian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Nested time bubble around an Aluminum ship and Nicrosil and Steel for propulsion... don't ask the details cause i don't have them yet. -
Short answer is Yes they can, but being at work i can look up the WoB for the longer answer.

Ok, the edit cleared it up for me.

Is Drake and Jonathan the same person? or did i miss something?

Did the number 16 have any significance before the shattering of Adonalsium?
Tsidqiyah replied to Rhi Bran's question in Cosmere Q&A
It should be noted that 16 has connections to the name of God in Hebraic numerology. but for that matter so does 42, and 15. We have seen other Hebraic connections to Adonalsium (Adonai being a name for God). -
Magic systems are not location dependent (except for AonDor) BUT they are Shard dependent. Breaths are unique to Nathis as that is the world where Endowment is invested. while anyone from any world can obtain breaths (HOID!) awakening on other worlds appears to require a hack. I haven't followed that line much so I am sure someone else has more information on non-Nathsians awakening and awakening on other worlds. The "location" dependent nature of breaths (must be on Nathis) is more an issue of Connection then of location. in order to be born with a breath you must have that Connection to Endowment. so the follow up question is: Will a child born of Roshar (or Sel, etc.) to non-drab Nathsian parents have a breath? EDIT: Ninjaed by The Sovereign
