  1. Thank you for the correction. That would then correlate to about 20 more days once moved back or an extra 16-17 years still not enough to really worry about calendar shifting.
  2. I don't think the number of was necessarily picked by Leras but it shows up, like the 16 days atium mistings were ill, as a function of Preservation's power 1024 = 16*16*4 and while I don't know why 16 is so significant to Preservation it is a reoccurring theme, and I bet the number (1024) is more important then has been revealed.
  3. Is Davids weakness water, drowning, or just being underwater like in the ocean? Because with Steelhearts; profile he no longer can drown so no reason to fear it therefore unless his weakness is more general (water or the depths) David is truly undefeatable. but you are correct. Spoiler for end of Calamity that applies here.
  4. That would really depend on if David could withstand an intense blast of thermal radiation from Obliteration's powers. I think checkmating Obliteration would be very difficult and without a fully functioning weakness I am not sure there would be another way to beat him as his danger sense is so overpowered. So my money is on a very long fight without a clear winner. Though throw in Profs force fields and Firefight's space warping and there may be a chance. i.e put one around him without meaning to hurt him. then have gas just fill the space of course use a gas that is nearly instantly fatal, so that even if he teleports away he has already be exposed. ... may need to think on this more.
  5. I just beat it with Leras
  6. I have been looking for the specific WOB on the matter and of course can't find it, but last week i came across a question about if Rashek's ascension was the first or if the Ruin/Preservation conflict was older then that. The answer was he was not the first, I don't remember anything else, and thanks to my work's computer policy (history is deleted weekly) i can't even go back. when i find it i'll edit.
  7. At the same time the change could be small enough that for all practice purposes we can shrug it off. If the earth moved any closer to the sun we would be in trouble. Using earth for my example here, if i were to move the earth closer to sun such that the year is now 360 days, instead of 365, the atmosphere would burn off and the overall daily temps would threaten life. Now someone else moves the earth back to where it belongs. 72 years at the new distance would be as many days as 73 years at the closer distance. In this example 300 years under the the new distance will be the same as 304.1666 at the old distance . Now back on scadrial the Well refilled every 1024 years even before the Lord Ruler's ascension there is no evidence that this changed after his ascension. So my guess is that the Pits will be restored after about 300 years regardless of the number of days in the calendar. This is based on the personal belief that the time to refill is more of symbol then a precise passage of time, and this symbol is more important to the shards then the exact minutes, hours, and days. I am sorry if I lost anybody i am posting on my new tablet and it doesn't have the fuctionallity I would like.
  8. The QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow down typists when typewriters had hammers that would jam up if you went too fast (200+ wpm i think). To allow for easier transitions to Computer keyboards they left the style in place even though it was no longer necessary, but the other styles have been emerging that promote faster typing.
  9. @AnanasSpren I just saw your top signature line is that Oma Desala/Daniel Jackson quote?

    What next?

I would recommend Warbreaker next as it brightens the SA if you care about the Cosmere at all. Nothing essential to the story mind you, but Warbreaker happened before SA Cosmereiclly speaking. So really just tidbits for those who care.
  11. OH! sorry the lake is currently un-navigable. Due to the presence of giant beasts and a depth of only 3-5 feet it is almost a holy site that most of the populace avoids. that is why i am concerned about the size of the continent as a whole. @The One Who Connects Thank for the thoughts on development i miss some of the finer details which can mess me up from time to time. I may be adjusting my civilizations soon. @Spoolofwhool Thank you for the thoughts on general navigation I haven't started with those elements yet, but i will need to consider those for the outer world as most of the other land masses do have access to the wider oceans.
  12. @ShadowLord_Lith Back to your original question: I think Dark magic tends to be more internally motivated. Think the force "Fear leads to Anger, Anger leads to Hate, [Hate leads to violent/vengeful/rage based murder]" Dark magic is usually motivated by powerful selfish emotions with the aim to get power, riches, stuff. I disagree that is can only hurt. even the dark side of the force can heal ... Vader hoped to heal his lungs in various of the books. On the other hand Light magic is usually externally motivated by positive/selfless emotions. I am aware of a lot of light systems that can hurt. So for me the difference is more in the emotions that motivates the actions of the user. Now for my question. I am working on developing a magic system based on modifying or changing materials, Not like gold into lead but making leather behave like steel or forming a brick wall into a single mass. so does anyone have examples on similar systems do they work as a central plot focus or are they too vague to drive a story.
  13. Thank you, for the the design concepts. Honestly i am not sure there is anything there BUT it is always worth taking a look.
  14. In world the land came to be due to the "Old Magics". The truth is that it was essentially formed as part of a cosmic war. (Think of it like a crater but instead of a meteor hitting the planet we are talking a god crashing into the world.)
  15. On the continent in question the tech level will be Elizabethan England (gunpowder, and wind/water mill powered automation but not yet to steam) while the outside world will be industrial revolution.
  16. I need some perspective. i am working on a world and the primary continant is a rough circle (think White Sand) with a circular lake at it's heart. the issue i have is my initial size projection a land mass 2400 (3870 km) miles across with the central lake being about 800 miles (1290 km) across. This would be roughly be the distance coast to coast along I-10 in the southern United State. The lake would be roughly the distance from Denver to the Mississippi River. Are these distances unrealistically large for a civilization to cross frequently?
  17. I as fashioner of stained glass pieces I seek entry into the Illustrious Guild of Artists. When I get some pictures of my pieces I will post them for the review of my membership into this great community, I would also highly welcome ideas for my next projects i am thinking something cosmere related.
  18. I know this was likely discussed many times over the last 12 years but has anyone else noticed that all of the Symbols for the metallic arts have cross lines and at least in the more modern depictions are stylized to look like spikes? i realize this is a throwback to the Inquisitors and the Steel Ministry BUT is it possible that these cross lines could also indicate the Hemaluric bind points for those particular metals? I am going to dig into the remainder of the symbols and see if i can come up with a more intact theory here but i figured i figured i better check and find out if this is already trod ground.
  19. I probably should get a life outside of Sanderson, but here you go: “I am “The Radiant-mist” My powers are awesome to behold and mighty scope. My weakness simple yet mysterious. With a simple touch, be you epic, human or inanimate object, I can change the way gravity affects you. I can reverse, multiply (up to over 15 times), or redirect the forces of gravity. Friction is next to suffer my whim. Zero to infinite I can change its coefficient to fit my needs and my wants. Best yet if I can see it I can “fix” it. The passage of time is clay in my hands. I often call this my weakest power for I can only make “bubbles” of accelerated, or decelerated. These bubbles are, without variance, about 5 meters (16 feet wide to be precise), and affect the passage of time by a factor of the same. Anything passing through the film of the bubble will be shredded by the tidal forces, I do not recommend you try it. I cannot reverse time even though i do spread that rumor religiously. Finally I cannot be harmed inside or out, weapon nor poison will kill me for I am unbound from the ravages or simple mortality. Though I am loath to speak it in a forum such as this. Aluminum grants immunity to who are but touching the smallest shard, unless ; it’s presence it enough to burst my “Time Domes”. And while my flesh fades into mortality at its touch, it must cause a mortal wound to actually kill me. It should be noted that alloys less than 84% in purity are meaningless to me and will only provide false hope. Those seeking to understand about my atrocities must realize I am like a cat and love to play a perverted game of cat and mouse. False hope is my forte at least until you bore me then then … well I hear Calamity is lovely this time of year. There was this city once... i think it may have ended up on the moon... i'll need to look into that (OK you caught me but i like to spread that one.) I wear only the finest French cuffed shirts in a selection of complex patterns and gaudy colors and am well known for the vast variety of cuff links I own. Blue jeans and safety toe shoes round out my daily outfit, but for an evening out I may be convinced to don a tie, those fancy ones with two tones, and don’t forget the cape of black velvet lined with red. My favorite ones were intentionally shredded to give me a short fringe for flair as I fall though the sky.”
  20. Try Raymond E Fiest's "Riftwar Saga" at al. It is one of my favorites and until Sanderson came along he was my favorite author. The first one is older which worries some people but if you can get past the classic feel you should enjoy them. BTW he is still writing in his world but i haven't gotten to anything newer yet. Stephen Donaldson's "Thomas Covenant" chronicles are not bad but a little more difficult slow to start but a very unique magic system. In general I enjoy older fantasy, those published before the days when authors had to worry about the fans reactions to classic tropes. I have never enjoyed books that avoid tropes just so they are not cliche.
  21. Does the text state "Stride" or "Step"? By measuring a persons stride (equal to about their height) then halfing it you would end up with the length of a persons step. So if Adien says it is so-many steps then they measure his stride that might explain the why he had to cut it in half.
  22. I am new to this thread and hope I am not butting in inappropriately but in keeping with the name of this thread. I need to let some one know and I think it is a safe bet that no one of this thread knows my wife, so I won't get spiked multiple timesources for spilling the beans early. ITS A BOY. He is due in January, and we are so excited.
  23. Tsidqiyah, Not the Lemon, awkwardly returns to the thone of the Great @Mistrunner, "After my departure from the keep I realized I never gave my thanks to the welcoming of this society. May I always honor this great society."
