My first thoughts were of anatomy class. Anatomy Class: where you take things apart to see how they work. Also chemistry, and even psychology. I actually think Brandon is using Pattern’s statement to trick us. He’s used this trope a few times, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was turning it on it’s head. It’s not like he never does this... He’s also the only writer I’ve seen who got the Heroic (neurological) Psycopath RIGHT. Most authors don’t consider that psychopaths can control their actions and behaviors, and that some do. But he’s also written a straight up sociopath, also done well. So I don’t expect him to play this straight at all...

Science Spren? Because that was where my mind went as soon as I heard that description. Maybe Study or Knowledge Spren? My thought for Willshaper Spren are Wild or Fantastic Spren. Possibly spelled Wyld, to make the use clearer.

Mystery Project in Sanderson's Status Bar
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Exalted's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I don’t think that would be Mystery Project though. It’s on his SotS. He could just write ‘Cosmere Novella.’ -
I think we have to remember that this isn’t Adolin’s story. He’s not a main character. As such his importance is only in regard to his effect on other characters. So if it was his story I would want to see more of HIS issues from his perspective. But since it isn’t, doing so runs the risk of having a secondary character become too prominent. Up until now, Adolin’s focus has been external. He’s been focussed on the issues of the people around him, allowing him to be their foil. In THIS book Adolin’s focus is more internal; that makes him less capable of filling that role. Adolin’s struggles may be interesting to us, but they are not the focus of these books. Now I, as a reader, feel that another possibility would have been to have Adolin act as a foil for SHALLAN, with him mirroring her as they both fall apart from their secrets. Brandon chose to go another route, possibly because he had too many stories to juggle and/or Adolin is going to disappear from the narrative in parts 2-4. It’s also possible that Brandon isn’t seeing him as a foil/mirror for Shallan. Or that he preferred the shock of Adolin unexpectedly shattering. Or didn’t want to go too psychological thriller. (I’m a fan, but I know a lot of people aren’t.) He May also have found that they mirrored to well, in which case Adolin -as the lesser character - had his arc discarded as redundant. There is also the possibility that Adolin was becoming too popular, or that his story overrode the main characters. In which case, diminishing him actually is very important. You don’t want readers latching on to a character who is important in part 1, then spend the rest of the book going ‘where is that guy?’ Failing a WoB, I guess we’ll just have to wonder...

@maxal This actually came from me considering why it was a problem if the readers forgot who killed Sadeas. The conundrum only became more obvious as the murder mystery turned into a horror one. The answer I found was that the surprise wasn’t supposed to be WHO killed Sadeas, but the character revealing it. Though I’m sure there are other possible theories; this was mine. I don’t think it’s becoming Highprince that is the issue; I think it is the shock of it. Adolin doesn’t know what the plan is. I think his shock when Elhokar swears fealty to Dalinar as HighKing, then turns around and appoints Adolin Highprince, is going to cause Adolin to let slip just a little. And then the whole story is going to come out, because Adolin will not be able to lie to Dalinar’s face. And it will probably all take place from Dalinar’s perspective. MAYBE, a momentary shift to Adolin. But almost certainly most, if not all from Dalinar. Actually, make that Shallan first, then Adolin slips up, then we move to Dalinar’s perspective. No Adolin viewpoint at all. It’s more powerful that way; it also makes more sense; Adolin’s character arcs have a lot to do with his effect on the other characters, so that works better.

Mystery Project in Sanderson's Status Bar
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Exalted's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Brandon has been trying on and off to write the Dark One, so maybe it finally clicked? Otherwise I’m hoping for a Cosmere short story or novella, Nightblood, or Elantris 2. I highly doubt it’s SH2. It could be Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, but he’s talked openly about that one... ditto for Rithmatist 2 which is supposed to be on the schedule. I think the trilogy bar removal was an accident; it’ll probably be back up once OB is out. -

My thoughts/theory with regard to Adolin: We know originally Adolin did not have any viewpoints in Part 1, but people couldn’t remember who killed Sadeas. My theory: Adolin is going to snap, and it is supposed to be a shock to the READERS because, aside from slight hints, he seems to be coping fine. Having Adolin’s viewpoint would render that moot, since we would be watching him crack. (It would also be redundant, as we are seeing that to a much greater extreme with Shallan.) Not having any viewpoint would leave readers confused, as there would have been no indication prior that he was the culprit. I don’t think Adolin is coping as well as people think. He’s avoiding his father - or at least that’s how I’m reading Renarin taking his place. His viewpoints clearly show that he is trying to ‘not think’ about what happened, often by forcing himself to focus on something else. (Sound familiar?) He’s spending a lot of time doing a repetitive action that calms him (horse care). (Again, sound familiar?) He’s even more reactive then usual - as much as he hates Amaram there was a time he would have at least managed to keep it in an undertone. So when is he going to break? Well, what better time than when Dalinar becomes King of Urithiru, Elhokar swears fealty and Adolin becomes HIGHPRINCE? Lots of witnesses, makes a giant mess for everyone, NO possible way to brush it under the rug... sounds perfect! So basically, that’s my thoughts/theory on this. (As an aside, I do think Adolin was right to tell Shallan; far too many people know and she was bound to find out. I think he did realize it bothered her; that’s why he tried to explain the circumstances. And she SEEMED to calm down; unlike us he can’t read her mind.)

Wow! @PeterAhlstrom saw my post! Thanks for the info. I’ll have to try again then. Last time Hofstra said BYU wouldn’t loan it. -
Well, now that it's been necroed... evidence for both attributes being twisted is Jezrien, who is implied to be basically out of commission 99% of the time. And might be that drunk we see in WoK. Also, WoB heavily implied -unintentionally- that we have seen Chana on page. It was the WoB about seeing the Radiant Orders and Dustbringers being weird.

theory The Rest of the Shards and Where to Find Them
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Khyrindor's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It wouldn't necessarily be lucky. As someone who believes in God, I believe that even bad things happen for good reasons. The belief in Divine Providence is that everything that happens, for good or bad, occurs because it is necessary for us to grow and fulfill our purpose in life. And that everything that happens is ultimately for good. My issue with a Shard of providence is that, in effect, it would be a limited version of the Judeo-Christian God. Which would make it far too similar to what Adonalsium appears to have been, at least to my mind. With regard to dominion: a long time theory of mine is that the Union of Devotion and Dominion is not Unity (as some have theorized) but Malchius, an idea which kind of translates into Kingship, but is rather more complex.- 76 replies

3 types of investiture based of the 3 realms
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Thude's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I actually posted this on the original topic, then saw that you started a new one. Good idea. Scadrial has three systems due to having two Shards. Not all alomancy is physical; i.e. Gold has a spiritual effect. Nalthis has one system. Using breath involves both cognitive and physical; there are almost certainly Spiritual aspects as well. Breath is Spiritual in nature. Nightblood was created with the same system as every other awakened object. Probably. Sel has one system. It may have had three once, because things have changed since Odium interfered. The Dor is Cognitive, as the power is stuck there. ALL Selish magic uses the same system. We know of several variants. Roshar... is confusing since it should have between 4 and 7 systems. We've seen two and have heard of a third. (Four is if Odium is counted separately, with H and C having three between them.) But this doesn't appear to be the case. Surgbinding can count as ten systems or one. Some Rosharan magic predates the shattering. Some Spren predate the Shattering. Some Spren are splinters of H,C and O. Roshar is weird. Taldain has one Shard and one system, but also has at least two variants. The magic there - wait. The comics haven't gotten there yet. So we can only talk about what is already known: Sand Mastery. Which seems to be mainly physical from what is shown in the comic (I checked to make sure.) We officially know nothing of Vax yet, except that it exists. We also know nothing of Aethers... except that they exist and all unofficial knowledge is almost certainly outdated. Does any of this help?- 12 replies

Dragonsteel chapter(s)
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Steeldancer's topic in Sanderson Curiosities & Unpublished Works
This may be the end of the Dragonsteel chapters for us... but at least we got quite a show in these last two! A dragon, better understanding of Dragonsteel, an exhibition of Tzai martial ar- Magic!, and a small info dump on the three realms, including a nice bit on the Spiritual Realm. Now I REALLY want to visit Utah again, Beautiful canyons, arches, interesting rock shapes... oh, and a certain master's thesis, if I'm VERY lucky. -

[OB] Inside cover art!! Finally!
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Overlord Jebus's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was pointing out that the 'not discriminate based on hair color' is a recent phenomena. When you know little girls who try to paint their hair black so 'grandma will like me' it still feels very present. I'm sorry if you took it the wrong way. It was 2AM and I may not have been as clear as I intended. @SilverTiger I learned it from my teachers over 13 years of Jewish religious studies. I'm not certain which theology you studied, but the above was from mine. Did you know angels don't speak Aramaic?- 321 replies

[OB] Inside cover art!! Finally!
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Overlord Jebus's topic in Stormlight Archive
Angels just look inhuman. And they do have forms; only God lacks any. They don't actually have power; God gives it to them as needed. And they have no free will; in many ways we have more power than they. We can change and grow; they are static. And angels can die; when their task is complete they cease to exist.- 321 replies

[OB] Inside cover art!! Finally!
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Overlord Jebus's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think we are supposed to be getting a 'Venus' vibe. Otherworldly beauty, tremendous power and grace, etc. Better question: why is she wearing clothes at all? Like Venus, since she is known for her beauty and passion, I think many depictions would have her unclothed. (You can look up 'The birth of Venus' online. It's a famous piece.) I think the in-world artist wanted to draw her naked (like many RW depictions of Venus), but the Vorin pushback was too strong so he put her in a translucent dress, with a hint of her safe hand, instead. In RL you just can't get away with putting a naked woman on the inside cover of OB... @Argent I'm guessing you don't know any older Eastern Europeans who believe red hair is the sign of the devil? Also green eyes. And God forbid you should be left handed! (My grandmother switched my mother's handedness due to the above.) There was a rather long period of history where we did discriminate based on hair color. And that's without going into the 'Jews have dark hair and eyes' idiocy. Because that one was used as an identifier during WW2. (My great-grandmother tricked a Nazi once by having -would you believe!- blond hair and blue eyes. Also perfect French.) Just because it's stupid, do not expect humanity not to use it to discriminate...- 321 replies

Plot to Destroy Adonalsium - CONFIRMED BY BRANDON
Kingsdaughter613 replied to imriel452's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My initial idea was that Ati was something like a grief councilor. Now that I know more about the period of DS I have refined my idea into: Ati works with the terminally ill, the geriatric, or is something like a priest performing last rites. Basically, a good man, but one who understands and accepts endings and helps others to do so as well. Now, think about Ruin... I thought Brandon clarified that we were thinking too much into the 'force opposing Adonalsium' and heavily implied it was the original Vessels?- 66 replies

Kell's story is very much in the style of a trickster myth, especially the 'fooling the Ire' bit. Leaving that aside, by the time he decided to play the Ruin card, he'd already spooked them thoroughly.

Yes, you can go to BYU and take it out of the library. Sadly, you cannot request that it be sent to another school - I've tried!!!! Considers taking a trip to Utah to read Dragonsteel at the BYU library... suspects all copies will be checked out when she arrives...
