Character Sketches for all 256 Twinborn Combos
Oversleep replied to christianlathaire's topic in Mistborn
First, hello to the Shard. Take this welcome cookie, please. Second, you're crazy. In the good way. You will make a fine addition to the Shard. I quickly looked through your list and I am not sure you got the double bronze right. It's true that the man would need to sleep ever, but he would tire like any other man. He probably won't be affected by sleep deprivation insanity, but his muscles will tire and his body would require probably the same amount of rest as normal humans. But he can probably read books while resting his body. I like Bendalloy Steel, nice And there definitely aren't 256 combinations, since most of Aluminum and Duraluminum Gnats doesn't matter. -
It gives a new context to Stormfather telling Dalinar he will be a Radiant without Shards.
-
It seems important: Available to all of them. Including Bondsmiths.
-
I meant it more like hacking into the system - Zahel feeds himself with Stormlight just fine. To be a Surgebinder you need to bond a Splinter and that will allow you to draw in Stormlight and use the Surges. Having a bond with Splinter of another Shard may allow you to hack into the system - it won't work the same way, but it will work. ... Wait, how did Zahel manage to draw in Stormlight? The answer to that question would be very helpful. I have something against gemstones being Roshar's focus - only recently Listeners have discovered that they can use them to trap spren. Before that, changing form was about exposing yourself to highstorm, having correct attitude in hopes of attracting the spren you wanted. Stormlight and spren, nothing else. There's also another thing: When Dominion and Devotion were Splintered, their power just kind of flooded Cognitive Realm and only a part of it became Seons and Skaze. There's also o WoB out there that implies if it wasn't for Kelsier to hold Preservation between Leras final death and Vin's Ascension something similar could have happened. Also on Scadrial power of Shards condensed into metal nuggets (and Shardpools and mists. Hm. Why the mists?) But on Roshar, all of Honor's power just turned into spren.
-
Well, lerasium is similar hack of Allomancy - Mistborns didn't arose in natural way. I'd say Leras would also had been surprised by arrival of Mistborns. It seems Honor did something akin to giving out lerasium to the first Allomancers - he gave them part of his power. But spren were natural way of granting Surgebinding and once they caught on they can bond with humans, they did. It's complicated if focus is a sentient being. The way I see it is that Roshar is one of the places that having a bond gives powers. No. Let's me put it another way. Having a bond is part of Surgebinding - fabrials and forms of Listeners require spren, but not necessarily a bond with spren. Note that Surgebinding works off-world, which we wouldn't expect if it was Roshar itself granting special powers to people with bonds. You're wrong. Allomancy works off Scadrial and it still requires Scadrial's focus. The Elantrian bonded to a Seon coming to Roshar would hack into existing mechanic of Nahel Bond. That Seon bond would be enough to fool the system to give the Elantrian access to some sort of Surgebinding. (It's like Shard Investing on Scadrial gets godmetal and Shard Investing on Roshar gets his spren [like Odium gets voidspren]). Note that people merged with Splinters have some sort of shapeshifting (Returned, Listeners). It's not exactly the same, but similar.
-
Can Listeners maintain their form indefinitely long or do they need to change it every so often or atleast supply it with Stormlight by coming out in the highstorm? (Much like Returned need to consume Breaths)

I thought about this lately. Magic is interaction between focus and Intent - focus is the means by which you access the Investiture and Intent is how you do it. Nalthis: you Endow Investiture by using a Command. Scadrial: you Preserve yourself by burning metal you Ruin yourself while storing in metal and Preserve by tapping the metal you Ruin by spiking with metal both the donor and recipient Sel: it's gonna be tricky, since both Shards are Splintered and rough power mixed. Shape/form is definitely the focus, but to use AonDor you need to be an Elantrian and to be taken by Shaod you need to be Devoted. No idea about the rest of the systems (also, I haven't read Emperor's soul). Roshar: every form of magic uses spren and Stormlight. Gems are also there, but on the other hand on Nalthis there is also the condition of human-like forms. This human-likeness is everywhere, but it's not the focus. It's something else. Other things also hold Stormlight (briefly and not very good, but they do) and gems tend to be perfect. The focus is spren. Much like Shard moving to Scadrial needs to Invest to get its godmetal, Shards on Roshar Invest to create spren. At least Odium does, since with Honor situation is special since he doesn't have another choice because he is Splintered. Surgebinding: there are spren there, but with Honor the case is binding them (binding things together seems Honor thing) and speaking Oaths (another Honor thing) to deepen the bond. You access Investiture by the bond with the spren (drawing in Stormlight) and spren filters Investiture into Surges. Honorblades probably are just a hack with artificial spren (much like Divine Breath of Returned). Fabrials use the focus in form of spren, which filter Stormlight. Right gem cut and color may seem to be important, but maybe it's because different spren are trapped in different gemstones. Again, parallel to Nalthis human body similarity. Since they use normal sprens and not Radiantspren or voidspren, I guess they bypass Shards accessing natural Investiture. Listeners' forms are similar, they attract and merge with spren (probably pre-Shard spren). Where is Stormlight in the process? Listeners change forms in the highstorm, so Stormlight is probably needed. I just realized that we don't know if the form can be maintained indefinitely long or if they need to change it sometimes or atleast supply Stormlight by coming out in the highstorm. Much like Returned need to consume Breaths; but Returned are unnatural so they need Breaths much more often than Listeners would do. We need to ask Brandon. Voidbringers are a Odium's hack of natural Listener forms - he Invests and creates his own spren to exploit their forms. We know that Seon bond also could grant some powers, but by moving on Roshar Seon would be similar to spren enough to do it.

I have mutliple times had seen topic with sign of a new post, but when I checked, there was actually no new post. For example, "Overpowered combos" in Cosmere Theories. Help?

After all these years I'm kinda thinking that making Slytherin that way (bad people and so on) is just bad worldbuilding.

the House of guilds (a Relaxing social RP)
Oversleep replied to Citadel16's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
Oversleep downs another vial and walks around the table trying to find optimal position. "You seem to assume lack of talent on my side. I need to assure you that's not the case. I am just a little rusty, but that's good, it will even our chances a little." He crouches, stabilizes himself and Pushes on the white ball which knocks another one into the pocket, but the white ball was Pushed too hard - it bumpes on the impact and shoots out in the direction of Silverblade. Oversleep jumps to the side and uses the last of his steel to Push the projectile away. It misses Silverblade by a hair and smashes into the wall. "Sorry about that!"- 86 replies

So why exactly is Nightblood so stupendously overpowered?
Oversleep replied to kroen's topic in Warbreaker
We know that Nightblood is a few magnitudes more powerful than a Sharblade. Few magnitudes means few 0's more. Three magnitudes - 1000 times stronger. So yeah, I'd say Nightblood has far more Investiture than a spren. -
Stop theorising about what I don't like, that's basically what you said, Confused. You didn't give a single argument why they would be unimportant, just stated the obvious facts that they are the means to access Investiture and shape the effect. You tried to argue that a higher level beings can bypass the focus by accessing Investiture directly and shape it by their will (like Shards do), but we know that there are about 11 Shards who can do that (four Shards Splintered by Odium, Sazed holds two). So focus is important to Cosmere at whole, since overwhelming majority of magic users need them (I'd say about 99.999% of them). As Moogle said, figuring out how focuses work allowed to create fabrials, probably. Knowledge what is the focus in magic is helpful in analyzing it. Also, Shards on Scadrial are blind to the Scadrial's focus. That seems important.

Death is not necessary, there is a WoB out there; somebody asked if in the future with precise surgery and such it would be able to spike people without killing them and Brandon confirmed it possible. The thing is, Hemalurgy rips out a portion of soul and the person spiked would suffer damage like not being able to pass into afterlife after dying (I am not 100% on that one). EDIT: ninja'd by Moogle with the very WoB I was talking about.

Welcome to our ranks! Can't wait to see your Theoryweaving! Welcome to the Knights Theoretic! I see you already know Kynedath, our other Theorybreaker. I probably should warn you that Theorybreakers must be especially careful with their fact-checking, since they're dealing with pointing out mistakes to other people. I will seek him/her and ask. Hm, I should probably update first post with a list of Knights. Should anyone have problems with theorycrafting or anything related to theories, feel free to post here both to receive and give help.

So why exactly is Nightblood so stupendously overpowered?
Oversleep replied to kroen's topic in Warbreaker
Why is Nigtblood overpowered? Because most Awakening require at least dozens and often hundreds of equivalent of (I'd say) a third of Investiture a living person has and Nighblood has thousands of them. It's definitely more Investiture than a spren has. -
The Official Thread of Relationships
Oversleep replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
(I'm turning 21 this year) The issue for me isn't approaching the girl (not a very big one, at least). I've done it before, badly or well, but I've done it. It's what you do AFTER that. I haven't even held hands. Sometimes I have problem with noticing that a girl likes me and few years later I have a enlightening "Oh God, I have been. such. an. idiot!" The first girl I've been with (sort of) hit on me; it seems I have been so clueless she didn't have a choice. We were 16; we had been in one class in middle school (three years) and in high school we were in different classes (or groups? You American people have your classes with different people, right? Here a group of 30 people have everything together). IIRC it started when we were doing Christmass wishes and the brief hug you do with females you know turned out to last a little longer and a little different. And after that you know, the usual stuff, talking on the breaks, talking after school, chatting on Facebook... and then there was the winter break (two weeks in February) and she went to the mountains to ski or something; after it something was off, something wasn't right and after some time I crawled out of it. I felt she's pushing me away. Probably. Thing is, contact went a little down during winter break, I didn't know how often to text (isn't it too much? Am I not overdoing it? and so on), and then there was Valentines Day and I wasn't sure what to do. At that point we've been together for a month or two. I either wrote something like it was a normal day or didn't text her at all this day, I'm not sure (it was 4 years ago). Now I suspect she might have been hurt by this. Or maybe she realized she didn't like me. But then, I couldn't bring myself to talk about it. There also were some moments that would cause every telepath walking by to go deaf, my mind was screaming 'PANIC' so loud: We're parting after school, what do I do? Say bye and wave as I'm walking away? Shake hands? Hug like a friend (briefly and in friend-like way)? Hug more intimately (long hug and more soft)? Kiss? How long should we be in relationship to kiss? How do you do kissing? All of that flashed in my mind in a fraction of a second, coming off as "PAAAANIIIIC!!!!". I ended up with friendly hug. She might have been also tired of me not doing anything to push the relationship in the more serious direction, like the situation I just described. Nevertheless, the fact that a girl hitted on me boosted up my confidence pretty much. The second one hitted on me during sailing camp, she was 17, I was 18, she was in the staff of the camp and I was a camper (and such relationships were discouraged by the staff). After the camp she cut off. There were some other cases, but this post is becoming too long. This semester I had English class (English classes are joint for all of the university, so I am studying IT, but there were also students from biochemistry and such. And from different years, too.) and there was one girl, but I haven't had occasion to talk with her, even in a group until almost the end. We were talking, in a group before the class. I pulled back a little from the conversation to get through my notes for the presentation I had to give and when I looked up from them I caught her stare (eye? look? gaze? damnation to this non-native language!). This could have been a coincidence, but I took it at face value. I decided to probe. We were not sure if the last class would be held, so I took that opportunity to write to her and ask about it. I tried to drag her into convesation, but it didn't work. Next class was the last and we won't see each other again and I'd probably won't write to her to ask her out and I don't have any reason to write to her and then drag into conversation and then smoothly ask her out. I am not Nightblood, I don't start conversations by asking people if they want to destroy some evil. (This metaphor will be bad) I start by being at training ground when she's looking for a sword to practice with and after a while I ask if she would want to take me with her to some event to destroy some evil. -
I'm fairly certain that size of the spike doesn't matter as long as it is big enough to touch moving blood. The thing is, planets doesn't have blood. But we probably should ask Brandon if planets are spikeable.

The thing is that there are 16 metals because it's Preservation number (or Scadrial's). (And it definitely wasn't intented as a clue towards 16 Shards, because literally nobody would get that.) 16 shows up so often because it's somehow built in Metallic Arts. The question is, is Preservation number 16? If that's so, why didn't Ruin's number influence things? So maybe it's Scadrial's number? But there are only ten Shardworlds, so why is it 16? And so on. It's just like with Ten Surges and Ten Knights Radiant Orders.

Do we know for sure who is writing all of the Ars Arcanum (it's one person IIRC)? At least the gender? I ask because in Polish all the verbs differentiate for gender and I am not sure if the translator got it correctly.
-
I think he just chose a random number. I suppose you all know that most people when asked to pick a random number from 1 to 10 choose 7. Also if you hear some number a lot, you're probable to pick it. It seems that Hoid has 17th Shard on his mind a lot and subconsciously picked 17.

Allomancy is born from Mists, problem solved.

Do Voidbringers have similar power-level system like Radiants? The more hateful they are the more power they can achieve? Did Voidbringers at the end of WoR were just lvl1 Voidbringers (scary thought)?
-
I imagine Odium bank giving credits in voidspren. "Mr Kevino, what do you need 50 000 voidspren for?"
