  1. I vaguely remember that walls and such obstacles make steelsight and ironsight weeker. Vin opening entrance to the Well Of Ascension, her and Elend opening the storage room at the beginning of HoA, Wax aiming at the Marksman through the wall.
  2. I think we should start discussing over Intents which turn up in different combinations. This will allow us to cross out some Shards. (On a side note, please take a look at everything what was already invented. Those which you want to discuss or are not sure about, please highlight with orange color.) For example, let's start with Vengeance. What are your thoughts? I think it's pretty clear that Vengeance is made up of Odium. What should be the other one, or maybe the other ones?
  3. And the topic is here : http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/52846-combined-shards/
  4. Brandon being Brandon has probably wrote a Diagram for himself to know when and which hints he can drop.
  5. As for your question, we don't know how new people gain Investiture. Few days ago I also wondered if Preservation would eventually be drained of Investiture; I came to conclusion that people gain Investiture from the background - much like on Nalthis(Warbreaker planet) new people are born with Breath, but this Breath isn't considered Endowment's power (contrary to Divine Breath of Returned). As for your question, there indeed were humans before - on planet Yolen. That's where Preservation and Ruin's holders came from (and other Shardholders). I'd advise you to check the topic 'Cosmere 101'. As for my question, I was asking about not Awakened metal but metal with Breath simply put into it (much like Awakeners hide their Breath in their clothes). I suspect Nicrosil Compounders may be able to Compound it, but I'm asking if it would be possible without Nicrosil Feruchemy.
  6. I call multicosmere with 16 pararell cosmeres.
  7. Does size of the Aon in AonDor matter? Because city-sized Aon seems to be pretty powerful and I had an idea what a madman Elantrian could do. The idea is a spoiler from one popular anime Another question: do we know what would happen if a Mistborn Awakener put his Breaths into metal and then burned it?
  8. Can non-solid objects be awakened? Like water? Or fire? Another question: is Hoid a Compounder?
  9. "He used some sort of telekinetic trick on the ball! I recently fought a telekinetic and forgot to remove the fire trigger spell, sorry about that. Who's the one interrupting our game here? I won't be able to brag properly about winning if there is a third party to the game!"
  10. Maybe they wanted to signal the rest of "bring-back-Voidbringers" folks that they have a Surgebinding assassin and they are not afraid to use him? On the other hand, why didn't they keep Szeth? Why did they throw his Oathstone away?
  11. I have thought about this too. That it requires touch. Well, for the fire mage being in close combat there is no use to imbue somebody with his aura to get him to burn. It would be easier to just summon fire and throw it at the opponent. But for the gravity (or magnetic) mage it would be very useful as he'd basically get all his projectiles not only auto-aim but also homing effect. ...Wait. That's basically how infusing with Stormlight works. ... Everything has been already done, eh? As for your question, I can PM you with the answer, but I'm not really comfortable with putting it out in the open in the Internet. The answer requires explaining ideas it took me long to figure out. Short answer: every mage gets some Stormlight holding enhancements but sadly decay doesn't get along with improving things.
  12. Basically any performer would make a good use of Allomantic external mental metals. Physical metals: Allomantic tin for ninjas, Feruchemical tin for snipers. Both pewters for any sort of physical activities. Allomantic iron for sailors (it has so many uses that I don't even). Feruchemical iron for traceurs (or free runners. I am not sure of terminology). Allomantic steel for couriers to use on train rails or spikeways. Mental metals: Feruchemical zinc is almost always useful. Feruchemical brass for travelers - store heat while in hot regions and then tap it while going on the expedition to the North Pole. Internal mental metals have no use except by interaction with other Allomancers, so any kind of police forces or special forces and criminals. Feruchemical copper is useful to all scientists. Feruchemical bronze for students, store during holidays, tap to learn/party during semester. Feruchemical bronze is my favourite, to be honest. There are a ton of situations during the day when you can store and there are a ton of situations when being able to not sleep for three days straight with no drawback would be useful. Temporal metals: Feruchemical gold is useful for everyone, but more so for people whose job has some risk in it. Then when something bad happens they have gold to live through it. Feruchemical electrum for all lazy people. Store it when you have nothing to do and tap it to counter your laziness when you have to do something (that would be very useful for me since I'm prone to procrastination). Allomantic cadmium... I don't know, you missed your train/flight and the next one is in 17 hours? Go visit a Pulser. Also could be used to synch up when you have jet lag. Feruchemical cadmium - situation similar to Allomantic pewter, you can do a lot of physical activity while always being properly oxidated. Also for people dealing with water to use in dire situations. Allomantic bendalloy is very useful - ask Wayne. Being able to catch a break out of regular time vould be used in almost any situation. Running to catch a bus and you're out of breath? Burn bendalloy and recover for a moment and then resume running with fresh strength. Feruchemical bendalloy for all the travelers and backpackers and who knows what else. Eat and drink a lot, then don't bother with carrying supplies. Enhancement metals: Don't know about Feruchemical applications. Allomantic aluminum and duraluminum is useless. Allomantic chromium - similar to copper and bronze, useful mostly against other Allomancers. Allomantic nicrosil - useful only when cooperating with other Allomancers and also can be used similarly to chromium. Should we change the topic to "Metalborn jobs"? Since Feruchemy also has a lot of potential.
  13. I have my books translated to Polish and never picked up and all these things, partially because translation lacks a few lines...: I think that the passages about Heralds abandoning us and Radiants turning against us speaks strongly about writer being part of humanity which was abandoned and turned against. "Our enemies" speaks about Voidbringers and whose enemies Voidbringers were? Humanity. All of the synopsysies are written as if the writer expieriences the events right now. The Everstorm looms. It's not yet there.
  14. I need some help with developing magic limitations. See, the general rule is "the more specific ability, the more powerful". So somebody whose power is to control electromagnetic waves would be weaker at manipulating visible light than illusion mage; storm mage would be weaker at wind manipulation than wind mage, etc. This rule can be also paraphrased as "The more powerful your ability is the less you are able to do". For example, ability to shoot lasers is powerful, but you can't cast illusions. The way magic works is that mage uses magic to produce an effect which is suspectible to our physics. So first ice mage breaks second law of enthropy to cast a freezing spell, but after that the frozen object melts normally. Now the problem is to set up another rule. We Sanderfans know it as "Investiture Interference". So I have to explain why main character can't just snap his fingers and set opponent on fire from 500 meters away and instead he throws fireballs. I could write it off as "magic cannot affect magic", but on the other hand I want it possible for spells to interact both in cooperative and hostile way. I want magnetic mages to touch opponent, charge him, and then watch him attract all the sharp metal prepared earlier. I want people to be able to lend their spells to somebody else (and also make artifacts). For example, one of the characters of the main crew is decay mage. He's very destructively oriented, but compared to the rest is very fragile (minor regeneration, almost nonexistant enhacements and so on) and can't keep up with faster opponents; but the weapons he creates are very valuable since they literally destroy magic and those more powerful mages often have full body armors. So decay shuriken will go right through the three walls, pierce armor, pierce through the victim and poison the wound with decay (largely counteracts regeneration and resists healing). Now, magnetic mages would find those shurikens very useful, but if I go with "magic cannot affect magic" then it's kind of useless to make artifacts. I have thought about making spell templates - said decay mage casts the spell on the weapon and then carefully removes his aura from it, leaving only the scaffolding of the spell and then he proceeds to remove spell's connection to him. That leaves a weapon which can be powered by anyone and still produces the decay effect. On the other hand, I wanted the auras (mage's energy is flavored by nature of his ability) to be responsible for the end effect. But that doesn't solve the problem of affecting other person with your magic. I have to explain why telekinetic mages can't just rip people in half while still allowing gravity mages charge people. I have thought about sorting powers into natural and unnatural - since everything has gravity, the mage just amplifies the natural gravity and the victim collapses his own house on himself, but why wouldn't fire mage be able to amplify body's heat to set people on fire? So I will probably discard that sorting idea.
  15. What if I based my characters on people I know (mostly my friends)? It all began as when I was bored I would picture some fight going on (and I was bored mainly during school) and before I knew it main characters were few of my friends. When I started seriously developing the world and magic I went with an axe to the characters and chopped off the majority of it, but few traits remain (one character's power is derived from the nickname my friend goes by, the other character's rivalry trait is based on my friend with strong leading characteristic and so on). Right now it's kinda hard to do something about it, as I know nothing about inventing characters (but I try).
  16. But do we know when Recreance happened?
  17. I made that joke two pages ago -.- Who are the richest people on the Scadrial? Coinshots. They literally throw money around.
  18. On the other hand, all humans have more Preservation than Ruin in them; so Feruchemists have more of Preservation than Ruin in them, so it shouldn't work that way.
  19. If I hadn't read Mistborn Trilogy, I wouldn't be even asking about combining Shards. The question is if any two Shards can be combined.
  20. Change is probably Cultivation + Ruin. There is a WoB that Cultivation is the most compatible with Ruin and the way I see it both are about changing things (Ruin in bad way, Cultivation in good way).
  21. That's right, but I want to add that there is theoretically a way to distill lerasium from the mists. There is a WoB on this.
  22. And how is it incosistent with what I said? What's your point?
  23. "Wait!" Fire slowly goes out. "Who's the Jedi pulling pranks here?" Turns to Kynedath "Did you see what happened?"
  24. Sazed did theorize that Vin absorbed some of the mists in childhood when she wasn't wearing her earring. He speculated that it could had been reason for her talent for Allomancy.
  25. I wonder why she said that. As long as you're adhering to her rules (seriously, I'm religious myself and I don't see any problem with dating somebody non-religious) there shouldn't be any problem, right? Unless she uses that argument to gently push you away. Or test if you would give up over such obstacle. Or something. I'm not exactly an expert on women. But don't give up, there is no gain in giving up.
