  1. It's actually a more extreme growth! January was a massively huge month for us, and our biggest month by far. Want some statistics? January 2014 had a total of 10,626 posts, which is almost double the previous most active month, which was 5,876 posts. The third biggest month was October 2013, with 5,564 posts. Before that, the two biggest months had been March 2012, with 3,472 posts, and November 2011, with 3,431 posts (this corresponded to Alloy's release). So actually, at the time January ended, January's posts alone constituted 11% of the site's posts. It's bonkers. January was also our biggest month by far hit wise, with 6.8 million hits and 39,000 unique visitors, and had the most new registrations (291) in a month that did not involve a contest. There are a few reasons, the first being the Words of Radiance board, which has over 9,000 posts in it at this point. Another a big contributor is the Sanderson Elimination board, which has 1,400 posts right now. I don't go too in-depth in the Words of Radiance board, but both those are boards are a massive source of upvotes. It boggles my mind, because a year ago a single posting getting more than ten upvotes was incredibly rare, and now... a lot less so. I can't fathom how many posts will happen in March from Words of Radiance. It will certainly be beyond 10,000. It's hard for me to really estimate how extreme the Words of Radiance effect will be, because it has the possibility to be a far bigger spike in traffic than any estimations can have. I fully suspect that there will at least be 15,000 posts in March. I will not be surprised if it surpasses 20,000. Beyond that, I have no idea. Needless to say, we will be watching the server very closely in March in case it dies. The site's massive growth led to new mods. Rest assured, we will be policing the forums very intensely and ensure that it will be clean and polite. You guys consistently amaze me how I know I won't go down without a fight, though, darnit... However, it is inevitable that staff gets dethroned from top posts, and is probably a really healthy sign when it finally happens. That means that the staff are not the source of the activity, the members are. We have gone far beyond the point where me or any one person is keeping the site alive, and that makes me so incredibly happy. I've ran much smaller forums where the staff really do keep it alive. When they left, nothing happens. 17th Shard is not that, which is phenomenal.
  2. Good point, I'll have to put out an FYI to not post things in the book before it is released. However, once March 4th rolls around, it is fair game to post such things in here. I'll post a Words of Radiance Impressions topic, which I can time to happen right at the 4th rolls around. There will not be a Book Three area until Book Three content actually exists. In case anyone has been wondering about what will happen to this forum after release, it will continue to exist for six to nine months after release, and will be the only place for Words of Radiance spoilers, with exception of Cosmere Theories. This time period will also have spoiler warnings for Words of Radiance content on the wiki as well. Afterwards, this forum will be removed and its topics will go into the Stormlight discussion board. It seems very silly to me to have ten different subboards for each Stormlight book. We don't do that for Mistborn or Alloy. It just gets too hectic, you know? So these special, book-specific subforums actually only exist because there is a subset of people who don't want to know anything about the book before they have it in their hands.

    Color coding

You can pick any color via a hex code, or I believe almost any HTML color code, such as here: http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm (this doesn't seem to be the best list, but it works). Any word that I have used has worked just fine in BBCode.
  4. Also, if you could let staff know of posts and members that perhaps post spoilers in sections that require tagging, that would be greatly appreciated. Either PM us or use the report feature and we will see it
  5. Yes, you can. I have done so with Weller's multiple times. I still remember one time when I had to call about it... the poor guy was like "that's what you want him to sign it with?"
  6. I had an ex (who I am still good friends with) who was very involved in MLP and I am not ashamed to say that I enjoyed it. Its animation style is undeniably gorgeous, it is smartly written, and it gives people characters who they can truly identify with. That said, I'm in college and give zero craps about petty bullying that happens in high school and earlier. Life is too short to hang out with jerks, so I avoid them. Of course, that's a lot harder to do in lower grade levels...
  7. Words of Radiance is very much a real thing, and you can see how large it is on this lovely image of Brandon's agent, Joshua, being crushed by the mighty tome. If you didn't know, Words of Radiance is actually longer than A Memory of Light and previous reigning champion of doorstops, The Way of Kings. Words of Radiance is even better at clubbing your opponents unconscious*. And as we are getting closer to release, we now have information on the release events for the book. (*17th Shard does not condone assaulting people with massive tomes.) Brandon's blog today described all of the release event goodies, the first of which being the usual BYU Midnight Release, which will be at midnight, March 4th. A lot of the 17th Sharders will be attending and camping (ideally this time without blowing a circuit...), so come join us and have fun! We'll be Soulcasting up some Stormlight trivia questions, ranging from Easy to "The Stormfather Wouldn't Dare" difficulty. It'll be a blast! For the midnight release, you should preorder the book, as BYU might run out. To do this, go to byubookstore.com and choose the shipping option, "Service Desk Pickup, 3rd Floor" so you will get it at the midnight release. Doing this will guarantee you get a copy. As usual, your number will correspond to who shows up in line first. They'll be handed out 7am on Monday, and then you will be free to leave and come back for the signing. If you can't go to the midnight release, fear not! You can also order from Weller Book Works and they will ship a signed and numbered copy to you. Due to Words of Radiance's truly impressive (weapon-grade) size, shipping runs $13 for the US, and more expensive elsewhere. Did we mention it's a big book? It's a huge book. The ordering period is from February 7th to February 15th, so act fast. More details and pricing can be found on Brandon's blog post. Lastly, you can get some "Glimpses of Radiance"--daily previews of the book, including sentences, paragraphs, epigraphs, and quotations--from Tor.com here, which will begin February 11th!
  8. I do intend to add this information to the Welcome to 17th Shard thread that needs updating.
  9. My ebook provider of choice is Google Play, and I don't think you need to worry about it. I seem to recall that just a bit back, Amazon actually said it was either 600 or 700 pages. Google may just have not updated it yet. Does India usually split Brandon books? From my googling, it doesn't seem to, but I could have missed it. Also, it is possible to return ebooks from Google Play. I have done so before and you just need to send them an email. I didn't get any flack for it; it was quite easy. So even if the worst happens I think you will be fine
  10. Yeeeeah I would highly recommend not going to the site until you've read it, though we will be policing spoilers pretty well. So in theory, if you don't go to the Words of Radiance board or Cosmere Theories, you should be fine. Probably. (I may even require spoiler marking in Cosmere Theories that very first week.) But still, I would strongly recommend avoiding 17th Shard after release until you finish it. The Coppermind, too. The Coppermind may actually be a worse place for you to browse that week than the main site itself...
  11. I demand a full set of these.
  12. What does that mean if I bonded with the Shard article and Windy bonded with Hoid O_O
  13. Okay, fair point
  14. Well, that's pretty freaking awesome.
  15. Look we all know you can just walk down the hallway, you don't need the phone to reach him
  16. I prefer the former. It's just better. And I would not say that it is "ludicrously detailed" as some would suggest. It's fine.
  17. I fail to see how that is an issue; we are here to provide a complete reference on everything in Brandon's books. This is part of it. The Kaladin article should contain absolutely everything that is relevant to his character, and every scene in a way can be considered relevant, or else the scene would not have been included. I have absolutely no qualms with this. Haven't you ever gone to Wookieepedia or Memory Alpha and just read an extensive and awesome wiki article and get totally absorbed in it? That's what I want here. So cem, I applaud you. This is great.
  18. I am a little worried about adding pronunciation guides, as Brandon has always said you can pronounce things the way you want.
  19. I like the current length of the article; I think it has the right amount of detail. More detail is always better.

    RSS Feeds

I'm curious, does anyone here actually use 17th Shard's RSS feeds for anything? If so, which ones?
  21. This obviously makes people who work on the wiki Shards
  22. Vice Admiral Chaos looked at the viewscreen as KChan gave him the orders. It was hard to design proper screens for a person with two eyespikes, so he actually had to look at the special panel attached to his captain's chair. Other officers had to look at the main screen, after all. Only he had the eyespikes, and not by choice, either. The Borg had been spotted. "Take us out of here, Ensign," Chaos said. "The fleet will have to do without us here. Head to The Elendel. Make haste." Was there any real choice for him? The fleet may have needed him for the battle against the Cardassians, but only he had experience with those Catquisitors and Hemalurgists the Borg had deployed. He had been a part of their Collective once, for a very short time. This time, he had another chance to eliminate those Borg creatures. Through Shadesmar The Inquisition went, and they exited back into the Physical Realm. The Elendel was quickly fleeing against the Borg, but the commandeered Borg ship was clearly on their tail. "This is the U.S.S. Inquisition, Vice Admiral Chaos here. Report! I see you are fleeing, but we cannot leave. In this corner in space, there'll be no civilian casualties. They must not get to the other worlds, you hear me?" Chaos's blood began to boil at the thought. "They will destroy everything you hold dear. This is bigger than one ship, this is about saving the future of humanity, and every race! You do not blow up the ship! We have made too many compromises already. Too many retreats. They take entire worlds, and we fall back. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! We will make them pay for what they've done!" Meanwhile, in the admiral's ready room, a tiny model of The Inquisition fell to the ground, shattering.
  23. Yeah, I don't like that top text either, but otherwise I think it's a really good cover. Also, interesting font choice. The Barnes & Noble page doesn't say Tor Teen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Tor Teen novel, especially considering that the cover mentions The Rithmatist. That said, the B&N page for The Rithmatist doesn't explicitly list Tor Teen, so it's anyone's guess right now.
  24. I have finally done this, observe the new Links menu! Sorry it has taken so long; I had tried to do it a while ago, but the code didn't work. Now it does The TWG Archive link will also go there once I fix that. Note that the Mistborn RPG link has been depreciated to this menu. Additionally, we can do nested dropdown menus, so now in our overflow menu, there are links to follow us on Twitter and Facebook
