And I don't think there's some 1 to 1 Shard to Godspren correlation. There seems to be a bunch of Unmade, and they are all Godspren to Odium.

Can't let you do that, Star Fox Swimmingly. To (mis)quote Hoid, what men value most is originality.

Investigation: Investiture as a Spiritual Radiation
PorridgeBrick replied to Tempus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think it means anything for it, really. I personally read this theory as an analogy. As I read it, it's saying Investiture behaves like a physical duality of particle and radiation, even though it's really Spiritual in truth (mostly).- 22 replies

Investigation: Investiture as a Spiritual Radiation
PorridgeBrick replied to Tempus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's in WoR, when Syl calls gravity "an agreement between friends" that they keep consistent to avoid "breaking your brains". I wouldn't say spren are the Cosmere's subatomic particles. I think the normal kinds of subatomic particles are the Cosmere's subatomic particles. The physics of the Cosmere are the same in the Physical realm as ours– they only change when the Cognitive or Spiritual butts in. But they could be somewhat analogous to the smallest particle of the Cognitive Realm. The Cognitive Realm is the Realm of ideas, and spren are ideas. It's unclear so far if ideas in the Cognitive have sub-ideas– if inside the Stick's sphere is a mini-sphere for each twig, inside them for each cell in the wood, inside them for each atom, et cetera. But if there aren't sub-ideas, then spren, as a pure, single idea, would then be some of the smallest building blocks in the Cognitive Realm.- 22 replies

I don't think the Unmade are country-tied. After all, there were ten Silver Kingdoms, and we know there weren't ten Unmade. Besides, I think that if they were meant to combat a specific country, they'd have more of a tendency to stay put. Interesting connection with -na and -nar. It might be just a coincidence, or it could be some sort of spren naming convention. After all, the spren in the islands must be pretty big and important, so they might qualify for the same kind of big, powerful name as one of the Unmade.

Not really. We have WoB that they are not of Honor, and not originally of either Cultivation or Odium. So they evolved on their own/were created by Adonalsium, then Cultivation and Honor settled on Roshar, bringing refugees from the Tranquelline Halls. Cultivation then must have fiddled a little with the Listeners, but they went ape when the spren sided with the humans and became the Voidbringers.

We know using the regional magic requires a bloodline, but not necessarily the symbols. Those can apparently be substituted.

Edit: Careful with that bit on Preservation– the power of Preservation is not actually in the metals. They're purely nonmagical. Even soulcast metal can be burned. The molecular structure of the metal acts as a gateway for Preservation's power to flow through the metal and into you. That power can be supplied even when you're worlds away, so I'm not sure there'll be too much problem with AonDor as long as you figure out the local symbols and have something to boost your power a la Elantris.

Nalan's Motivation for Using Szeth (Spoilers)
PorridgeBrick replied to Confused's topic in Stormlight Archive
Don't we have WoB, though, that Hoid isn't the Ars Arcanum author? It just seems like a very unlikely circumstance. First the Ars Arcanum author has to hunt down Szeth, who the world thinks is dead, and then somehow convince him to halt whatever he's doing and give him an impromptu interview. Besides, he says "Reports of the Assassin in White's odd abilities have led me to some sources of information that, I believe, are generally unknown", as well as "The effects of these Surgebindings were known – colloquially among the members of the order – as the Three Lashings." This isn't some Szeth specific terminology picked up in an interview – someone/something taught Szeth how to use his blade, and someone/something told the Ars Arcanum author the info on the Windrunners.- 23 replies

Nalan's Motivation for Using Szeth (Spoilers)
PorridgeBrick replied to Confused's topic in Stormlight Archive
1. Unlikely, IMO. 2. Who's going to interview a crazed vengeance-bent assassin with a deadly magical sword? And why would Szeth bother to give him an interview? 3. We know that the Ars Arcanum author is the same in all the books. I don't think Szeth is a centuries-old Worldhopper. So clearly, we should go with 4. Szeth's source of info and the Ars Arcanum author's source are the same : the teachings of the Shin / Knights Radiant.- 23 replies

Sugarhouse signing- Saturday, Mar. 29th
PorridgeBrick replied to Herowannabe's topic in Events and Signings
That is some pretty cool new info. I'd thought that the Koloss had been made entirely un-Hemalurgic, but it seems that that is not the case. And with the spikes almost certainly being passed down over the generations, they should eventually lose most of their power. Since they're clearly functional without, I wonder what they need the spikes for?- 51 replies

Finally won. Took me so long, though, and by the time I finally won I had everything entirely systematized.

Rick is a Stick. He is not fire. He is most definitely not a crazy beggar who wanders the streets, telling all to convert to the great Church of the Stick.

Gold isn't concentrated healing. It's based on Cognitive perception– you heal to how you view yourself, and how you are viewed by others.

But that was specifically after she'd decided to bond the voidspren. That may not occur if you refuse from the beginning. And if not, then just staying inside might work, since Parshendi do have to go into the storm to bond.

Wrong way around. The shards are splinters of Stick, hence the name. The shattering was when a heathen dared to profane the holiness of Stick by tripping and snapping him underfoot. But Stick's power is unlimited, and so he simply became 16 Sticks, all presiding with wisdom and stickiness over various shardworlds.

The fact that they are referred to both by Mr. T and the Listeners as spren, and that they can be bonded to, indicate that they are more spren than anything else. But Rlain's quote, and how the Stormfather called himself Sliver of Honor, makes it seem almost like both were once physical, living beings. I wonder: could you become a spren? Take up a very large Splinter, like how you take up a Shard, destroying your physical body and over time becoming molded to the Splinter's Intent? After all, Jasnah calls Honor a giant spren, so maybe a mini-shard would count as a spren too.

Why exactly can't the Broken One be one of the three mentioned? I like your theory, but I don't think we should discount, a priori, that the Broken One could be Odium.

Truly splinter religions in all senses of the word.Of course there is an Order for our most Holy and Benevolent Stick. The Ideals are as such: 1. Stick before fire. Stick before fire. Stick still before fire. 2. Thou art a stick. 3. Thou art not fire. 4. Thou shalt be a stick, even when others claim thou art fire. 5. Thou shalt stand firm in thy belief of stickdom.

What exactly is Nightblood? (WoR spoilers inside)
PorridgeBrick replied to menacekop's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think that is what they are, really. It seems to me like Nightblood– and all Awakened objects– are really just man-made spren that get attached to a physical object. You form an idea, a Command, in your head, give it life through Breath (with less breath meaning less living, less sentient, just like Nahel spren vs. normal spren), and then paste it onto a scarf, or sword, or corpse, et cetera. But they're still a spren-ish being even if they've been taped to an object. Nightblood's a Cognitive entity still– he's 'Destroy Evil', not "I am a stick sword." -
What exactly is Nightblood? (WoR spoilers inside)
PorridgeBrick replied to menacekop's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The bonds are as similar as any other link between realms, really. I don't see much of a special connection though.I wouldn't be so sure about Snapping coming from anything specific to Preservation. To be a Surgebinder requires a broken soul too, and Snapping can also come from extreme joy – not just protecting yourself from dangerous situations. It's a Cosmere-wide phenomenon for any magic involving receiving external power.
