  1. Shoot. I completely forgot about the Returned cutting things short. I guess there's always next night then!
  2. But the Thrill is growing stronger in Jah Keved and likely fading in the Plains, if Sadeas and Adolin are any judge. They're still around, sure, but certainly not getting stronger or anything.
  3. Er, that's kinda what balances are for. And while Nalthian Breaths are simple, they're hardly exact– even laymen can tell differences in power between Breaths, and all the Heightenings are approximate. You certainly could measure each separately– but most of the Shardworlds have Investitures that are difficult to measure (the Dor), are rather inexact (Breaths), or require extensive infrastructure and time to calculate (Stormlight). Nicrosil, however, is pretty easy to use, and a universal measure removes conversion altogether. @akasketch You're attempting to measure Dor and Allomancy by powering them with Nicrosil, right? That certainly works, but it's for more time-consuming than necessary. Instead, I'd measure by storing their Investiture into the Nicrosilmind. No calculation necesarry: just store until full.
  4. damnation. I loved that TFE cover, and was so hopeful about the next two... and now we get this. Great. This is Vin, not a female Benjamin Button. Aging increases with time, not the other way around.
  5. Peet, from Bridge 4. He's also dating a woman named Ka in the books, and iirc Peter's wife is Karren.
  6. The Heralds are all human as far as we know. I believe there's a WoB for it somewhere, but it's not on Theoryland or the compiled WoB thread.
  7. Heralds don't die like normal people though. They're just sent for torture to Braize. So the bond isn't ever cut, really. That's also why Honorblades disappear instead of dropping when their Herald dies – the Blade is off in Damnation with them. When Szeth is killed, he's truly killed, so the Blade drops like any other Shardblade.
  8. But how do you compare that exactly once it's been a while since the last Highstorm? Besides, you'd have to be pretty industrialized to get enough perfect icosahedrons like that. Nicrosil's just so much more convenient, since the shape doesn't really matter if you can just get a precise enough mass. I guess a normal Rosharan wouldn't have access to that, but it's likely that Worldhopper organizations like the 17th Shard or the Ars Arcanum authors would use Nicrosilminds as a standard measure, unless some other magic system somehow provides an even more perfect universal unit.
  9. It's in the Southern Hemisphere. Water is freezing in the south and very warm in the north, and even further south there's a polar ice cap. A polar ice cap close enough that even Rosharan sailors, who stick close enough to the shore to get back in case of a highstorm, can reach it.
  10. Er, no. There was a female Windrunner in Dalinar's vision.
  11. It's from the Way of Kings (in world). The Ideals are all based on the 40 parables from TWoK. When Nohadon and Ishar made the KR, they made them follow the Oaths. The spren probably adapted the system to fit.
  12. 1) Yes. The stanza about it not being impossible to "blend their surges to ours in the end" heavily implies this. However, what with their different physiology and their being "broth" to human's "meat", I suspect the mechanics of the bond would be different. It would be an Honorform, with the spren cooped up inside them, not gaining the Physical manifestation one gets from bonding humans. 2) It's a trait of the native Rosharan wildlife. I suspect that when chasmfiends and chulls pupate/undergo senescence, they switch spren just like listeners. 3) What Patrick said. Humans aren't really adapted to switching bonds with spren like the Parshendi evolved. You'd have to kill your spren, and then hope your new spren is suicidal enough to bond with you afterwards.
  13. That unfortunately never happened. All that happened was Nalan explaining everything and giving him the sword. The only reason we know their 2nd Ideal is per WoB.
  14. Yeah, they're called the Ancient Ones for a reason. Since we know Adonalsium was on Roshar at some point before the Shattering, and left some of its power there as spren, it's very possible that they even predate Yolen and humanity.
  15. That probably has a lot to do with the red eyes, as well as their surge being the "Surge of Decay and Destruction". If their Oaths were Odious too, I'm pretty sure they would be expelled from the Radiants just on general principle. As it is, life as a Dustbringer must have been awful. Okay, I'll concede some wiggle room there. They still can't outright break it, though. If the Dustbringers had some Oath to obey orders, then there'd be that same degree of wiggle room too. No need to give the Dustbringers another Oath just to give more wiggle room.Did you quote the wrong person here? And when did Szeth know the ideal of the Skybreakers?
  16. The Skybreakers' 2nd Oath is "I will put the law before all else." That sounds like being trapped to me. Sure, the modern ones are corrupted, but in a different way than you're thinking – in Nalan's case, he's perfectly following the letter of the law, but not the intent. Real Skybreakers would probably prioritize the worst criminals, while Nalan just uses the law for his own ends. Real Skybreakers are even more limited– they follow both the letter and spirit of the law.@Baine I like the way you think. Edit: Edgedancer, that is an interesting idea. But how would this anti-Odium clause apply to other orders? Lightweavers, after all, speak truths instead, so that's one exception to the clause already.
  17. Eh, the Skybreakers are completely trapped by the law, so I don't see why the Dustbringers can't be trapped completely by their orders. Their attributes are "Brave" and "Obediant". I don't see anything there about justice or morality.
  18. I do agree with you here. I suspect that while the Parshendi and the Horneaters, being in the Cognitive Realm more, would be able to see the pre-Cultivation spren, the humans wouldn't, so Cultivation tinkered with them a little to make them visible to all. But then why would the East worship Cultivation rather than Honor if it was Honor's place? And the whole ecosystem and class structure of Shinovar is as Cultivation-y as it gets. You may be right on the area being artificial though, but that would mean the entire mountain range sheltering Shinovar would have to be called into existence. Still easily within a Shard's power I suppose. re: no spren in Shinovar This may be because they don't have Highstorms. For the spren to manifest should take energy. Without Stormlight, there is none, so all the spren would be invisible in the Cognitive Realm.
  19. I dunno about your Dustbringer oath. Even the Skybreaker's 2nd Oath has something Honorable about it, even if it can be considerably twisted. Your oath is just plain Odious, however. Maybe put in a clause there so that it's not just "my enemies", and more like "the bad guys" or "the guys that really annoy my lord", since the Dustbringers are Obediant and all?
  20. @Wrath Some quotes. So yes, Cultivation has a lot to do with spren, but they predate her. Of course, we kinda knew that anyway what with there being Adonspren and all. So it's pretty clear that Parshendi are a native species that evolved naturally alongside the other Rosharan wildlife. So this is the timeline, as I understand it.1. Adonalsium comes to Roshar. He leaves some of his power behind as spren, and kickstarts the Rosharan wildife before going over to Yolen. He probably created the Highstorms too, though those could have developed on their own. 2. Listeners and the rest of the modern wildlife evolve, bonding with the Adonspren and living in wonderful peace, harmony, murderous continent spanning Hypercanes, etc. 3. Adonalsium shatters, and Cultivation and Honor, being lovers and all, shack up together on Braize/the Tranquelline Halls. They create an Earth-like world, with lion, tigers, and bears, oh my, as well as humans. 4. Odium is a jealous chull, so he crashes the party and forces H&C over to Roshar, making Braize his own base. 5. H&C's refugees make camp in Shinovar, aka stealing the best land from the Parshendi. They also steal the spren, as well as make some more of their own. This really pisses the Parshendi off, so they pull a Vader and go off into the dark side. Violence ensues.
  21. All it takes is 1 Breath for the First Heightening and Life Sense. Even if he's consuming Stormlight now instead of Breaths, I'm sure he has a couple Breaths just in case.As for magic changing, we've got at least a few instances of magic staying the same on other worlds. Hoid Soothes people on Roshar with metals, and his Breaths bring him perfect pitch just like normal.
  22. I would maybe power that up a little.1. Your #2. 2. Your #3, except you can only hear that player's outgoing, not incoming, PMs, and you do not know the recipient of those PMs. 3. You can listen in on all PMs, but with the same restrictions as my #2, and you do not know the senders either. While #3 may seem OP, this is actually fine if it's something that can only happen from a Nicroburst or Duralumin. Oh, and speaking of Nicrosil. 1. Nicroburst one target, using up all their metals. 2. Nicroburst one target. Even if the target has < 3 vials, their power tonight will have 3 vial strength. 3. Nicroburst two targets, at the same strength as #2.
  23. I concur on this. Also, with all the offensive roles, I think Lurcher should be stronger. 1 Vial: Lurch yourself or a target. 2 Vial: Lurch yourself or a target, with 2x strength. 3 Vial: Same as before. Basically, each level of Lurcher should be the exact counter to the Coinshot's level. They are paired metals, after all. Edit: Maybe edit Thug too, to avoid overlap with the Coinshot. 1. Survive 1 attack, becoming injured afterward and unable to use your role again. 2. Survive 1 attack, injuring yourself and the attacker. Both are revealed in the writeup, though not which is which. 3. Survive 1 attack, killing the attacker without injuring yourself. Once you get your metals back, you can still continue using your abilities.
  24. This analogy is the greatest. Now we know what game the Inquisitors played at parties!
