Welcome to the Shard! If you were to become a F-gold Savant it would do the trick, as you'd be immune to pain. Unfortunately, I don't think that regular F-gold would do this, as it doesn't really block pain, it just lets you heal. F-tin would not only let you Compound though, it would also let you store the pain of oversensitivity, thus allowing you to become a Savant as well without most of the obvious negative side effects.

Ravenclawjedi42’s crew!
Trusk'our replied to Ravenclawjedi42's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
It seems that I have found out I must have some Terris lineage, as I have discovered that I'm actually now a Full Feruchemist and have sold my Shard to some very not-sketchy merchants. -
Normally, if a Hemalurgist wanted to access a Radiant's Surgebinding they would have to spike both the Radiant for their power and the Spren for their raw Investiture; But what if it was the Radiant just stealing the necessary part of the Spren's Spritweb? For example, you have someone who is becoming a Radiant start to Bond a Spren, but the Spren feels like the person isn't making the right choices and tells the Surgebinder that they're going to break the Bond for their own good. The Surgebinder decides to spike the Spren and take the chunk of their Spiritweb necessary to sustain the Bond and the powers it grants them. Rather difficult to justify such an action on the Surgebinder's part (would make for a great villain origin though), but it seems like it should be possible to do with only one spike.

We don't entirely know what destiny is at this point, but based off of how Fortune seems to work, it's probably a instinctive gut-feeling that nudges people to make certain decisions that would be more beneficial to them. So, what if you secretly gave a certain Destiny to someone to subtly nudge them in a direction you want? For example, if you were to spike out the Destiny of a fanatic follower of you and were to implant the spike in an enemy of yours (probably while they're sleeping or otherwise unaware of their surroundings), would it make them slowly start to make choices that see you in a more positive light? Could you use the Destiny of someone who is making good life decisions (i.e., following the law and such) and give it to a terrible criminal to get them to start changing their ways? Could you give an incredibly lazy person the Destiny of a highly productive individual to make them want to work more? All of this is quite hypothetical, but I'd like to know what all of your guy's thoughts are on the matter.

Thanks, I hear from my friend that Shallan's old character in particular was of interest, and it sounds like there were some pretty good scenes

I recently spoke with a friend who recommended reading the Way of Kings Prime, and I'd really like to. Does anybody know how I could get ahold of a digital copy?

Welcome to the Shard! You know, I hadn't really considered the possibility of Hoid so directly interfering with the Bands in that way, but I could certainly see it happening; Kelsier would almost certainly have wanted the Bands (as he is so desperate to see a growth of the Metallic Arts in society), and we know that Hoid loves to meddle with such things and to mess up Kel's plans and his Fortune could have warned him of the Bands causing problems in the future.

If this statement were for anything other than F-chromium (or F-duralumin), I'd be highly skeptical of your decision-making abilities This is an interesting one, mostly because it's going to be useful for just about everything- I can see no activity that wouldn't benefit from having more Fortune at your disposal (except maybe trying to hide your use of F-chromium from skilled Seekers). There is definitely a lack of information on what exactly Fortune does, but from what it sounds like it's a kind of "gut feeling" or instinct that lets one get subconscious hints of things coming to pass. It is also apparently tied to one's closeness to the SR, so highly Invested beings can probably access it more easily in general; Rhythm of War spoilers; In any case, it's hard to think of a ton of special ways to use F-chromium- it's so broad in its use that you could apply it to just about anything; you could fight better by dodging or striking a little more accurately by strengthening your instincts, you could make better business/investment decisions, you could compose a better song by being "in tune" with the music better, you could find your lost pocket knife way more easily, you could get to work faster by avoiding the traffic jam unknown to you by intuitively taking a different route, you could win the heart of you crush by saying just the right thing at the right time, you could save a friend from assassins by feeling you should show up at their house at just the right time, you could avoid assassination yourself by "feeling" out of place and avoiding the poisoned coffee or dynamite trap rigged to your door, etc. On the extreme end of things, it's likely that by tapping enough Fortune you could straight up crack open the SR to your mind and see the future consciously, though it would take a lot of Investiture to make that work clearly instead of being a maybe-sort-of gut feeling, I'd think.

Black Holes and other strange things in the cosmere.
Trusk'our replied to BrechioSwordMouse's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think that you could at least get rid of Nightblood this way, even if (somehow) the black hole can't technically destroy it; black holes warp spacetime so badly that just going near one can potentially send you into the far future, effectively deleting you from the rest of the universe even if you aren't technically destroyed. But who knows, the Spiritual Realm and Investiture do weird things to time, so perhaps such time dilation from the black hole wouldn't be as bad as one would think for a deifically Invested object. -
That's a valid point. I did gloss over H-zinc, mostly because I'm biased and would much, much rather have H-copper; it gives you a boost to your intelligence, which is something that's good for any situation, plus you get some protection with it.
-
I disagree; Bendalloy would be easier (chug water constantly from the tap or devour your family's thanksgiving feast single handed), Brass would be easier (sit in a fire or a boiling bath), iron would be easier (Wax stores a full third of his weight pretty much all the time- and gets benefit from it), and nicrosil has the potential to be (just can't use the stored power at the time but can function normally otherwise). There's a Youtube channel called RAFO that talks about Cosmere stuff, and in his Feruchemy video he mentioned the idea that you might be able to quantify and store specific aspects of "sleep" in a Bronzemind, such as the release of growth hormone (perhaps a Koloss could prevent giantism with this?). I think that it might be possible (after all, F-tin and duralumin seem to be able to do such things with proper Intent). If it is possible, there could be a lot of interesting applications. . . I'll just have to research some more on sleep before I can figure all of it out.

I love this idea. It does make me wonder though, would it even work? People who have lost certain senses typically have the portion of their brain responsible for interpreting that sense rerouted to augment their other senses, so there may not be any processing capacity to comprehend those memories of vision for a person who's been blind long enough. Still, I could see lots of uses for this particular idea. Now that sounds like true VR technology waiting to be uncovered. Using it for training and recreational activities could be really fun and useful. Yup, Sazed's essentially a genius when it comes to memory- he can memorize entire texts without the use of his Copperminds:
-
Agreed. If you need time, don't sweat it. If you need help in some way, don't be afraid to ask- nobody will judge you.
-
Are you okay? Like, is the shaking from excitement from the questions being asked, or is it something else that's causing you harm?

There are lots of ways I think this could be used. Store memories of a favorite movie or read a book so that you can be pleasantly surprised every time you watch it again (but tap the memories when not about to watch it so you have the ability to think about it and let it influence your character). Store memories of a terrible event to prevent yourself from developing PTSD or having a nightmare (extensive use would prevent you from continuing to grow tolerant to such forms of stress though). For combat you could have a Coppermind piercing (to make it resistant to A-iron/steel) specifically dedicated to reminding you of tactics used in battle. This could be particularly useful for military leaders who could quickly look up historical battles to gain insight from them. I'd like to think it could be used on a more personal hand-to-hand forms of combat as well, but nothing direct comes to mind as of right now. Perhaps you could store memories of fond events to tap latter and improve your mood when you really need it, or you could tap a memory of deep meditation to help clear your mind and leave you capable of dealing with a highly stressful situation (such as combat. See, there's a use for it already ). It might be possible to use F-copper to alter your perception of an inanimate object enough to alter its Cognitive Aspect (primarily useful on Roshar, especially if you can get lots of people to use it via medallions). You could probably use a trick to pass time quickly by storing the memory that comes directly to your mind while traveling on a plane or such- to your perception, you'd have just time skipped forward to the point in time where you wanted to be. Basically A-cadmium (for self only) but much cheaper and more reliable. If you have the ability to mix powers (Hemalurgy or futuristic medallion tech) you could tap someone else's memories to change how you viewed yourself, then tap F-gold to change your physical appearance to perfectly mimic them, then tap your old memories back to restore your personality and sense of self. After a while you should be able to maintain the form even if you tapped F-gold, as it would have become a part of how you perceived your new self. Building on this last idea, I think you could potentially use F-copper to help heal people of old wounds or genetic diseases by letting them change their perception of self enough to be able to heal via F-gold. Honestly, I think that F-copper has some of the broadest uses for Feruchemy, especially considering the fact it can permanently alter your Cognitive Aspect at will. That's powerful, especially in the Cosmere where things like Perception and Intent play a large role.

What Cosmerian Faction Would You Join?
Trusk'our replied to Forts Board's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Hard to decide. I like Silverlight because they study Cosmere mechanics in depth, I like the Scadrian division of the Ghostbloods because they hunt secrets and fight to protect my favorite Cosmere world (and are cool with Worldhoppers), and I like the Radiants for their Ideals and the possibility of learning more about Surges (even if I joined as a support and didn't have a Spren of my own). I don't personally think I'd like to freelance, at least not until I had gained a fair bit of practical experience and was confident in my ability to Worldhop. In the end, I'd either choose Ghostbloods (non-Rosharan divisions only) because they're action oriented and collect knowledge (and would probably be the most okay with Hemalurgic practice) or Silverlight because they are constantly researching the Cosmere and because they stay out of serious danger. -

In order from top to bottom; Navani, Adolin, Jasnah, Renarin, and Lift? -
yeah, I drew some diagrams of that same concept before, but the one concern I always ran into was whether it was going to severely displace the insides of the bearer. The bigger the spike, the more space it needs and the more it has to rearrange one's insides to fit, which will tax the body more. It depends on how much Investiture is in the Allomantic and Feruchemical powers I'd say: This WoB makes it sound like you need a 50% on the scale to get to be an Allomancer in most cases, while most non-Allomancers are somewhere between 20-30% in their level of Investiture. If this is true, you could fit about 12.5 Allomantic or Feruchemical powers inside a single Set spike (using multiples of the same power to increase its effectiveness). This is a decent amount, but nowhere near what kinds of crazy shenanigans I was thinking of pulling off, particularly with. . . Warbreaker spoilers: Well, that's fair. It would be a weakness that could be exploited, but I don't think it would be particularly easy to do, especially the wires and metal nuggets were deeply implanted in the body (as they can rearrange things unlike Feruchemical implants). I suppose you could make it more like a mesh of interlocking plates underneath the skin with thicker cords connecting them (using another, more flexible substance to reinforce them) to make something more like an endoskeleton or internal armor than a true web. Or you could simply make the web spread over a smaller area with fewer wires to sever. What about the removable external Hemalurgic storages? How do you think those would fare? You're also probably right that it isn't that easy to pull out spikes either, but I like to come up with the most effective ways to circumvent Hemalurgy's weaknesses and flaws that I can, and this felt like a logical step forward to me.
-
One of the biggest problems with Hemalurgic spikes is that they have a limited storage capacity for Investiture; the experimental Set spikes, for example, could only hold between 20-30 non-Metalborn people's worth of Investiture. Steel Inquisitor spikes could hold more as they were larger, but they are somewhat bulky and stick out of the body, making them easier to be removed by enemies and less practical in general. I've tried to come up with another solution- what if you made a web of metal that was spread throughout your body instead of having a single spike to hold all of the Investiture? You'd have a single spike that pierced the desired Bindpoint to hotwire the Hemalurgic web to your own soul, but you'd have a large collection of metal nodes connected by flexible wires to spread the storage of the spike's Investiture throughout your body, allowing for much greater storage space. You'd have to be careful not to pierce any other Bindpoints to prevent unnecessary damage, but I think it might prove possible. Another possibility is that you could have a larger Hemalurgic storage that rested outside the body and used the spike imbedded in your flesh to quickly and easily be swapped out (you'd have to find a way to get them to share Investiture, but I don't think such a task is impossible). Basically, it would be like carrying around a vest or backpack that contained a large metal vessel for Hemalurgic Investiture that could be detached from your body for daily life, then reattached for combat or some other task that required lots of power.

Trusk'our replied to bmcclure7's topic in Stormlight Archive
Agreed. Seems to be built more like a Koloss-blooded person. Shallan just looks plain adorable -
Oh sorry, the original topic is Mistborn (and therefore does not need a spoiler box), not Cosmere. I was just saying that if you were asking about the "outbreaks", as they made me think of a certain Rosharan magic system- which would need to be put in a spoiler box. If you do want to put something in a spoiler box in the future, click the eye icon at the top of the reply page and it will make a little box where your cursor is on the page.

You'd have to get the metal to enter the donor's body at the correct Bindpoint to take anything Hemalurgically, so I'd say it's possible to use a bludgeoning tool to get the job done, though it would be a lot more difficult- to get the Hemalurgy to work you might have to essentially blow a hole through them (so Hemalurgic cannon balls would work, though I'm not sure a metal baseball would). We can see that Kaladin's Shardhammer (Syl in changed form) in OB doesn't cut the Spiritweb, it just smashes the target physically. I think Hemalurgy probably works in a similar manner. @alder24 also raises a good point for the accuracy of Hemalurgy; you could probably rip off non-functional pieces to do someone extra harm, but I doubt you're going to be capturing usable powers unless you have Waxillium levels of accuracy. Yes, this could have worked, though getting the exact Bindpoint would have probably been tricky. I could see a bullet with the Intent to perform a Hemalurgic excision still being able to cause some harm to the Spiritweb even without the correct Bindpoint though, so it would still have been extra damaging. It's also worth noting that if any of the aluminum bullets got lodged in his body his healing wouldn't have worked until they were removed anyway, which would be enough to seriously harm or kill him even without the use of Hemalurgic Intent: F-gold should be able to handle Hemalurgic damage, though it would be greatly draining and would likely require a large external source of Investiture to fuel it (i.e., Compounding, Unkeyed Goldminds, or Purified Dor): This is a very interesting question, and one that we have multiple WoBs on. I'll start with the oldest to the newest: At first it sounded like Brandon wanted Kandra to be able to heal from Shardblade wounds just as they could physical wounds, but later this was changed; it seems that Kandra can heal from most physical injuries with hardly a care, but spiritual injuries (such as from Hemalurgy) would not be possible unless they also had F-gold or some other form of Invested healing. This probably means that you can't just spike something like strength out of them and let them grow it back no problem- as @alder24 said, there is going to be some permanent damage done. They could probably rearrange things with their remaining Spiritweb and flexible body to allow for them to function, but it would be ignoring the injury, not healing it (kind of like how Melaan was able to tie her shattered bones back together in BoM with sinew- though functional it wasn't perfect and was ultimately weaker than it had been before). Some very interesting questions @Duxredux, very good post

What is a question you would ask for a WoB if you could?
Trusk'our replied to Walter The Moral's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The biggest question I have that I'd like for Brandon to answer (that I don't think is RAFO material) is whether a Feruchemist would be able to store more Investiture in a bunch of smaller Metalminds or if they would be able to store more Investiture in total by storing in a single large Metalmind with a total mass equal to all the smaller ones. -
Heck yes Heck no So, basically, you're saying that you might be able to develop a Resonance via Hemalurgy by combining powers over time? Probably with the right steps, yes, though based on the WoBs it is probably harder to do it that way than if you could just replicate the effects of one.
