      Have fun!

Oof, Friday is a long while from now. Well, still have fun! We'll miss you.

  2. Oh, my braces are killing me.  This had better be worth it.

On the plus side, I managed to read a lot of Knife of Dreams while I was in the waiting room.

  5. Why am I making this update?  Number one, to say how much I appreciate Ted Nasmith and Alan Lee's art for The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion.  Their work is incredible.

Second, there's a Russian rock opera based on events from the Silmarillion, and I need to share that.  Finrod Zong  It's an hour forty minutes long, and in Russian (duh), but it's great.  You should check it out.

    Spoiler

If anyone actually watches it, please tell me what you think.

I promise on all my Tolkien books that it isn't.

  6. Hey, does anyone know of books that have the plot 'we crashed in the wilderness and we need to work together to survive'?  Also post-apocalyptic fiction that's about people building a community together?  If you do, I'd love to hear about 'em.

  9. Happy early Fourth of July to everyone, yes, even my neighbors who are setting off fireworks so loud I can feel them in my chest cavity.

I forgot how much this place starts sounding like a war zone when this day rolls around.

Everyone say thank you to the Mongols for Fourth of July fireworks! By everyone I mean the US people... Unless others want to as well, I won't stop you.

      Spoiler

If you weren't aware the Mongols were the ones who spread gunpowder from China (who had been keeping it a secret) to the rest of the world.

  10. Hi, guys!  I'm back!  Tanned, tired, and not really ready for heat, but here we go, whoo boy.

  11. Well, as good a time as any to do this, I guess.  (She says as she procrastinates packing.)

I think some of you already know, but this is my official goodbye-for-now for the next week.  I might swing by on mobile, but I might not have time to.

So, I'll see you then.  *hugs*

  12. Ahem.

    *stirring bagpipe music*

    Well, here we are.

    2,481 posts. Five RP characters.

One year ago, when I put a shoe on my head and yodeled poorly, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Now, I'm so glad I signed up.

I came for the book discussion, I stayed for the amazing people.

Okay, let's get into the shoutouts!

@Channelknight Fadran, you're amazing. RPing with you has been awesome. I've smiled, I've cried, I've laughed myself silly. You're incredible.

@Condensation, you're the best. I love the conversations we have.

@DramaQueen, I know we don't talk a lot, and you aren't on that much, but you're awesome!

@Matrim's Dice, you're super cool! I love RPing with you! (Craven and Martin climbing trees needs to come back. *ninja emoji*)

@Truthwatcher at the Rim, if you see this, that means you logged in. Excellent!

    @Chinkoln, @Aspiring Writer, @Dannex, @Nathrangking, @Emi, @xinoehp512, you are all super duper incredible!

I know that's not even close to everyone, and I wish my brain had enough space and all the words needed to give everyone a shoutout. It's honestly crazy that I don't, I never expected that so many people would see the nonsense I post and decide that they want to see more of it. That's just... wild.

Yeah, I don't really know what else to say. Just that all of you are amazing, and I can't wait to see what the next year brings.

Happy late Shardiversity. Thx for the mention.

  13. Okay, I've been sitting on this for almost a week, and I need to get it out.

Last week, I woke up in a cold sweat after a nightmare.  This itself is rare because I rarely dream, and it's even more rare that I have nightmares.

What was my nightmare, you ask?  Take those creatures from A Quiet Place.  I haven't seen the movie, but I've heard a lot about it and seen a few clips.  Now, combine those with the character design of Venom, the symbiote.  Again, haven't seen it, I just saw some promos.  Finally, make the whole thing look like a six-foot-tall Gollum from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.  Got that nice and meshed into your brain matter?  Let's keep going.

This creature that my subconscious came up with can sense motion, and has super speed.  The only way to avoid it is to be dead silent and not move a muscle.  It can't see you unless you move and make noise.

My dream started out with me roaming through a sunny, mountain forest.  And it ended with me frozen in place, dead silent, as a motion-sensing Vollum creature slunk around me, waiting for me to move so it could kill me.

    And then I woke up.

    Someone comfort me?

I’m going to be honest, I first imagined the creatures from a quiet place looking like Venom. But after seeing the movie, it’s not that scary.

Well at least you weren’t afraid of Minecraft zombies... Uh.. totally not my ten year old me.....

I'm not a negative person.  I like to think I'm pretty chill.

I genuinely don't have any idea what is going on, and I'm not sure I like it.

Oh, I'll come around to it.  But hole-ee woe, that came out of left field.

I read Mistborn at 12 (just barely 12, too), and iirc the stereotypical Fortnite kid is 12, so the only problem I see is the "they wrote a book about this fortnite dude" thing, but chances are, those people won't care enough to come to the Shard.

    3. Chinkoln

      Chinkoln

Is Fortnite really a "children's" game? I mean, yes, children play it, but when it was originally created, did the developers think "Man, I cant wait for a bunch of six-year-olds to buy this shooter game and spend hours killing each other brutally?"

    4. Tesh

      Tesh

It was a HUGE deal when it came out. I was in middle school and in leadership (which i hated with a burning passion) and we made all these Fortnite posters and so I have no love whatsoever for the game but... Oh well.

I do think it's funny how people are reacting to it, though, to be honest.

      Quote

      ...kay but is there?

      Yes, there is.

      The Mongols are awesome.

They were just nomadic pastoralists who were really good at using composite bows and riding horses and established what was basically the largest land empire ever. They fixed up the Silk Roads and promoted trade and made it super safe, and also gathered together some of the best artisans and scholars and stuff to help them run their empire.

They killed a lot of people very violently, but only if they didn't submit to their rule. News of that spread which encouraged people to surrender. So now we remember them for doing violent and terrible things when they actually didn't do that too often.

  17. What should you do if you got impatient while waiting to watch the Bad Batch with your family, so you made yourself a 501st kama?

Asking for a frien - who am I kidding, we all know I did it.

  18. Constantly torn between the 'it's okay that I haven't quite figured out how to draw various features yet, I'm trying, and that's the important part', and the 'this absolutely sucks and I cannot get it right and I need to burn it before I get blacklisted for doing it wrong' parts of my art.

I'm 'self aware' and 'well-adjusted', all that means is that I recognize that No. 2 is not a good way to think.  (Or plausible.)   It's a work in progress.  Much like my art.

Anyway, this has been Evening Musings With Kindness, tune in next time to hear how to muffle clicking noises from ceiling fans.

  19. Remember when I asked how to make friends?

Yeah, I figured out that that was too broad.

How do you start a conversation?

    1. Enter a username

      Enter a username

Asking me anything involving any kind of social situation is like asking an Inkling how to swim. (I guess I'll rephrase that for people who haven't heard of Splatoon: asking me is like asking π how to act rationally.)

    2. Chinkoln

      Chinkoln

Depends on your personality, and the personality of the other person. My closest friends are people who hate large groups of people, but are super friendly in small, tight knit groups. If you want to get to know someone like that, then go ask them a question.

      Examples?

      Sports?

      Favorite Disney Movie?

      Musical Instruments?

      Favorite Avenger?

      Beaches or Mountains?

Once you have asked a question or two, then the conversation will begin to flow.
I am friends with other people though, and I can interact with a lot of personalities (though I don’t always enjoy it). More outgoing people like jokes and humor. Makes jokes, insert yourself in comedically appropriate moments, and don’t second guess yourself. Be confident. For example, a good friend of mine was giving a “Shark Tank” presentation in Civics. It was an idea for an electromagnet powered generator. He said it would be eco friendly, so if you don’t use it you are evil (which was funny in its own). Someone asked if he said “evil” or “emo”. He clarified that he had indeed said emo, and then after a pause added “but there isn’t really a difference between the two anyway”. He would be terrible at customer relations, but he is a great guy.

Be yourself. Don’t alter yourself so others like you.

  20. Happy Birthday to the bestest Shardbuddy!  All the hugs for ye!

  21. In the vein of occasionally posting things I drew, here's something I wrote.  A few paragraphs in which I give into my urge to do something with alternate realities and write Martin the FOTT character three other personalities/endings that could have been.

    Spoiler

In one world, Martin dies at eighteen on one of his first solo missions, terrified and alone, a ring of bruises around his throat. (In that world, the discovery of an eighteen year old, with the scars of a soldier twice his age, triggers questions.) The ISC never retrieves his body. It's not worth it. (The questions trigger outrage.) Reese goes against orders to find the remains of her best friend. She becomes one of the leaders of the revolution, the Tigress, incandescent in her fury. (Mica dies, not by an enemy hand. It only fuels the fire when the recording is found.) In that world, Martin is the spark that brings down the ones who enslaved him, the symbol that people rally to.

In another world, Mica dies in the cold snow, bleeding out red onto white, and Martin follows him, anger and grief guiding him to the gates. In that world, there is no revolution. The death of enemy operative Stiletto, known danger for nearly four years, is celebrated, before his age is discovered, and horrified consternation takes it's place. (If the ISC is putting sixteen year olds on the field, what else are they doing?) But before anything can be done, the Dagger, raging at the loss of the only two people who have ever cared about her, destroys those who took them. In that world, Reese becomes what they all feared, the monster who brings the ISC to power. No one remembers Stiletto and Rapier. They are only two more marks on the list of atrocities the ISC has committed.

In yet another world, Martin breaks. He becomes the monster, a shell that follows orders. (He is the world's villain. He doesn't care. He can't care.) By the end, he is more scar than skin. He is killed by escapees of the program he is a slave to. A single shot. The sniper who does it calls it a kindness. (Everyone agrees.) Mica leaves the escapees to make his own path. He is the only one to make it more than two weeks. (A month later, he is shot by Nassau, who killed the one who should have been Mica's brother.)

(When he is not a child soldier, he doesn't survive. Bombs, hunger, natural disasters. There is no escape for him in those worlds.)

In this world, he is a soldier. He has nothing to distinguish himself from his companions. He is a listener, an observer. He follows orders. (It's better, now. This is not the ISC.) He learns to trust. Deep down, he harbors a hope that maybe, it can be made right. It's drowned by the learned fear that seeps through his bones. It's safer this way. He is safer. (He can't take a betrayal.) These people know more of him than almost anyone. He will not let them know everything. (He doesn't want to be alone.) He will follow orders. And maybe, he can heal. (He wants to.)

    (Is not allowed to.)

    (Is?)

Whaddya think?  Good, bad?  Weird?  All three?

    1. The Storming Stormfather

      The Storming Stormfather

Cool, but also confusing. I don't have nearly enough context to say good or bad. It really could go either way, but it seems like a cool concept, exploring different possible worlds. I like it BTW.
