New Pet Peeve just dropped.
STOP. TALKING. ABOUT. HOW. FAST. YOU. READ.
ESPECIALLY PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVELY
1. It’s annoying because it’s bragging. All bragging is annoying. This alone isn’t enough to make it an issue though.
2. It’s annoying because it’s completely unverifiable. Basically any other skill or ability can be viewed from an outside perspective. Some can be judged subjectively, others can be measured objectively. There is no way (barring literal eye-tracking software (even this would be flawed though)) to observe reading speed. It’s simply unknowable. Number of words or books means nothing, because guess what? YOU SKIMMED SOMETHING. I promise you, there is at least ONE word you didn’t read in any given book. More likely there are multiple sentences scattered throughout that didn’t entirely register. (This then brings up the semantic argument of “does the reader have to have actually gained any information, or does simply recognizing the individual words really fast count as ‘reading’”) Especially if you’re someone for whom “reading fast” is a point of pride, you’re likely to skim more. Not intentionally, I’m not calling you a cheater or anything. That would be silly, because…
3. I DONT CARE. NOBODY CARES. ITS NOT IMPRESSIVE. IT’S NOT A SKILL. Reading speed is a “skill” that depends on a huge number of factors, most of which are completely out of any person’s control. Environmental factors that could effect focus, genetic factors that affect brain processing speed etc. These things can’t be improved upon. It’s not a skill. (Also, it’s fairly ableist. Like, ADHD and Dyslexic people struggle to read quickly at no fault of their own. Imagine a group of people arguing about who’s the tallest and across the room is someone who has dwarfism.) The one factor in reading that may actually be a skill is reading comprehension, but comprehension generally increases the SLOWER you read soooooo…
4. It’s annoying because of the strange, passive-aggressive, competitive discussion it causes. Every single time reading speed is mentioned, it’s like every person nearby devolves into base-instinct animals competing for the right to mate. I swear, they act like peacocks. Inserting themselves into the conversation, always being careful to not specifically insult anyone who came before them, but making sure their supremacy is known. “Oh you read [long book] in a week? Wow that is fast! I’m a fast reader too, once I read [longer book] in 4 days.” Like omfg we’re all supposed to be more intelligent than this. Stop comparing sizes and move the heck on.
I would like to say that one of the reasons this annoys me so much is because I used to be quite guilty of all of this. Thinking on younger (much younger. (like, 7 years ago)) dannex bragging about how fast he reads makes me violently cringe to the point of disgust. But to you all, I offer a better way. A slower way. Join me on the enlightened path of non-pretentiousness, and never bring up reading speed ever the heck again.

As I'm sure you all know, today is a very important day
Happy Fourth of July!!
Nah, that's not it. It's my Shardiversary!
Two years here, and a *whole bunch* of incredible people who've been added to my life. Seriously, I can't imagine my life without the Shard anymore, y'all have made an imprint in my heart. holy scud that sounds cheesy...
I know I'm going to end up forgetting people no matter what, but I still want to try to remember everyone.
First and foremost, @Channelknight Fadran
Thank you for being my best friend for the past two years. I'm so, so glad that I met you, and I wouldn't change a bit of our friendship.
You have become one of my very best friends over the past year or so, and I am so grateful for that. Screaming with you about Hunchback and whatever other shows we're currently obsessed with, and just you letting me rant to you about all sorts of things, from my confusing emotions to the randomest stuff in the universe have been some of my favorite things ever
Koi, you have probably become one of my best friends just in the past, like, week and a half. Thanks for getting me re-obsessed with Imagine Dragons and just being an awesome friend!
Vapsy!! I seriously love you so much. You are gorgeous and so sweet and wonderful and I wish you realized how very incredible you are. The few times I've been able to hang out with you have been so much fun and I wish I could see you more often
Connie, the same things I said to Vapor apply to you. You were one of my first friends on the Shard and you're still one of my best friends here. Love ya!
I've loved reading your poetry lately and I am still undescribably happy for you! You've been a constant during my time on the Shard and I'm really glad for that! You're incredible :))
I'm *quite* excited for you to meet Moe irl. Also, I'm quite grateful that I've been able to have you as a friend and meet you in person. also can I have every recipe you've ever made ever? I want food
I'd totally go in-depth on every person I've interacted with on here, but....I am lazy so here are some honorable mentions
Love you all, here's to another...year and then I'm probably leaving on my mission :).
I'm very proud of my phone dealing with all those tags.

Apologies for being late! (I had no access to internet from June 20th until a week ago and after that I was too intimidated by my number of notifications.)
Anyway happy very late Shardiversary!

While I did not forget it was my Shardiversary today, I wasn't going to post anything about it. Well, no more!
It's pretty wild that I've been on here for two years, and I'm a hundred posts shy of three thousand. When I first joined, I saw people like Nath and Xino who had high post counts, and I thought 'ain't no way I'll ever get there'. And I kinda haven't, but I've said nearly three thousand things on here. That's a lot of things.
Anyway, quick Kindness round up! In the two years on here I've:
- Learned I'm a sappy romantic
- Participated in more release hype then I ever had before (Rhythm of War, oh yeah!)
- Had more fun with my writing than I have in a long time
- Wrote poems! That might actually be good!
- Had my nickname morph from Kindness to Sprennie (not complaining, I really like Sprennie!)
I'm not going to tag anyone, since I don't have enough words to say everything. But thanks to everyone who made the last two years so fun, and here's to two more!

Healing is just cell division.
Cancer is uncontrolled cell division.
You can die of cancer.
Therefore you can die by healing too much.

On Monday I learned I get anxiety attacks.
The feeling of looking back on one's school year and thinking, 'oh that's what that was!' sure is something.

Last night I had a dream that my birthday was just a few days before Tax Day and because I turned 18 I was technically supposed to pay my taxes. I didn't even have an income or anything, but I got charged with tax evasion.
I got charged. With tax evasion.
Why the crap was there a police interrogation for that????
In other news, the seniors (me included) have set up several tents and lawn chairs in the cafeteria to hang out in all day. Someone brought a hairdryer, so we've been melting marshmallows onto graham crackers and chocolate with that.

...I missed my own Shardiversary...

I beat the Undertale without killing a single monster.
I saved every single one of them.
Y'all, I'm... moved.

(Knowing that someday you might break the bonds of hatred and return home without killing a single monster...)

The hoodie I got a while ago!!!
My friend says the font reminds her of Undertale and the style of Szeth and Nightblood reminds her of Terraria. Or maybe the font reminds her of Terraria and the style of Szeth and Nightblood reminds her of Undertale........I don't remember. Anyways, I don't know either of those, so I'm just enjoying the only Sanderson clothing I own.
