Surgebinding? XD Of course it wasnt a singular act, Honor had to turn the then regular humans into cognitive shadows, create the mechanism thats lets to Heralds travel to and from Braize and the Oath that traps the Voidspren on Braize. He also presumably created the Honorblades during the creation of the Oathpact, which(to me) seem to be part of the Oathpact(I think the Honorblades are how the Heralds travel to and from Brazie using a Connection like the Oathgates) the Heralds abandoned their Honorblades when they “abandoned” the Oathpact which i dont think is a coincidence. what do you mean “wider principles”?

the Sibling had already withdrawn from the tower before the recreance “My research into the cognitive reflections of spren at the tower has been deeply illustrative. Some thought that the Sibling had withdrawn from men by intent—but I find counter to that theory.” —From drawer 1-1, first zircon

It was the Stormfather that was bonded when the Recreance happened, his Bondsmith broke his oaths but Stormfather was strong enough to survive(unlike many others) The Sibling was already “slumbering” at that point and the Nightwatcher was probably sittin in The Valley Tanavast was alive to see the Recreance so i dont think he had merged with Stormfather yet

theres at least 1 or 2 WoB about hoid getting his head cut off,so i think that one is okay to publicly discuss Questioner Has Hoid ever died before? Brandon Sanderson Define died. He has had his head chopped off. Questioner *Inaudible clarification* Brandon Sanderson He actually ends the book Dragonsteel, that's unpublished, being beheaded. And that event happened, although that book didn't happen as the book was written. Starsight Release Party (Nov. 26, 2019)

its the same peoples. the only other society thats not native to Roshar is the Iri. the "orginal event" he talks about is the migration from Ashyn so i think how it went down is, multiple ethnic groups migrated over to Roshar and the one that became known as the Shin, just stayed in Shinovar and never really intermixed with the rest of the general populace after the migration. Questioner *Inaudible question* Brandon Sanderson *Repeating* Why do the Shin look different to the Rosharan significant <face>? Because the Shin have spent a long time being very xenophobic. They haven't intermixed very much. When the original event happened, that I'm not going to say because of spoilers, different people settled in different places, and the Shin in particular just have been very xenophobic. Cultivation and the Metallic Arts
Eternal Khol replied to KandraAllomancer's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I still dont think became the shard. With the well of ascension, you ascend and become the Shard with only one limitation. Instead of having an infinite power pool, coming from the SR, your power source is instead the one little pool in the physical realm known as The Well of Ascension Dalinars PoV never changed, he was still a human in the PR. he couldnt have remade the world in the state he was in Questioner Dalinar Ascends, right? Like, right then, there. Brandon Sanderson I have RAFO'd that. Whether he is Ascending or not is a RAFO. Questioner Okay, because I know he kind of mentions from that, I don't know how to say his name but the older guy who has the Diagram-- Brandon Sanderson Taravangian, yeah. Whether that deserves to be a capital "A" or not is a matter of argument. It can be disputed. Questioner I guess my main question would just be Dalinar's now able to pull Stormlight and give it to people now. Brandon Sanderson He definitely can. That is a Bondsmith power, so. Questioner That is a Bondsmith power, okay. Brandon Sanderson That is specifically a Bondsmith power. Questioner Because my roommate was saying well, the Stormfather was surprised he could do that or was the Stormfather surprised that he was able to bridge-- Brandon Sanderson He was surprised by what was happening to Dalinar as a whole. Questioner Oh okay, that's what I thought because I was like, because I felt like the Stormlight, that power would be a Bondsmith power. Brandon Sanderson Let's say that the Stormfather and Odium were seeing something in Dalinar that, perhaps, the average person watching even who is knowledgeable about Surges would not completely understand... But he will be able to use that power and Bondsmiths in the past have used that same power. Footnote: Brandon clarified that he might have been unintentionally misleading in his answers to this question during his Stormlight 4 Update 1. Idaho Falls signing (Dec. 29, 2018) a weapon that can hurt a shard is still a weapon. And he never said that they can hurt odium, he said “And … without the Dawnshards … Well, I have done what I can.” he implies they could be useful, thats about it- 12 replies

Cultivation and the Metallic Arts
Eternal Khol replied to KandraAllomancer's topic in Cosmere Discussion
what? i dont remember that seeing the future is of Odium, i dont think the NW would be doling out visions of the future well, the atium-shadows someone buring Atium sees are coming from the SR so i think this one is a given i wouldnt call him a Sliver just yet. i think you need to actually ascend to do that. if dalinar did Ascend for a while, his body wouldve disappeared(which it didnt) you have to actually hold the power and let it go to count as a sliver. to me, it seemed that dalinar didnt actually hold that much power, he just opened a conduit to it -the well of Ascension literally lets you become the Shard and do whatever you damnation well please. The Dawnshards(as far as we know) are weapons of mass destruction. not all that similar. -the well of ascension didnt have an effect on Leras' sanity. Leras giving up most of his mind affected hid sanity not to shoot down this theory, but it just feel like your looking for connections that arent there or tenuous at best like "oh, both shards have mist investiture, they must be related" yes, they are related. any shard can have mist investiture. im pretty sure its the most common form of investiture(cant find the WoB)- 12 replies

they never knew how Aviar are made. all they know is that they are native to the Islands and can only come from there. Dusk told Vathi that they all have to go, specifically, to the Eye of Patji, and eat the worms to become an Aviar(while theyre young) imagine your just like Vathi and have absolutely no knowledge about aviar, other that the fact that they come from the islands and grant magical powers. would you just be like "woopty doo... im just gonna bring this random baby bird through the most dangerous place on the planet and let it eat some fruit below a tree to see if it gets magic powers" that sounds crazy. on top of that the Trappers(who are most knowledgeable on Aviar) are extremely reclusive and dont share any knowledge with outsiders. Aviar are really rare and cost a fortune, youd be lucky to even get one.

i dont think there ever was such a thing as "pure" Adonalsium(investiture) even before the Shattering, the different Intents were kinda already there. its like when the 16 killed him, they just broke his power along pre-existing fracture planes, and locked each chunk of power to a certain Intent(or spin/magnetism) Questioner I was just wondering if a Shard's intent can change over time without changing holders? Brandon Sanderson Without changing holders? The holder can have a slight effect on how the-- a big effect on how the intent is interpreted, but what the intent is stays the same. So it's gonna be filtered. The way it manifests can change, and you'll see that happening, but it is the same intent. When it was broken off, it took a certain thing with it. Salt Lake City ComicCon 2017 (Sept. 21, 2017) snip of a WoB: "I always imagine Investiture having certain states, certain magnetisms if you will, associated with certain aspects of Adonalsium. So it's all "assigned" to a Shard--because it's always been associated with that Shard. To Investiture, Adonalsium's Shattering meant everything and nothing at the same time."

Yes, it exists every. relevant WoB’s Questioner Aluminum, when you burn aluminum, does it actually destroy the metals or just take away their power? Brandon Sanderson It destroys the metals. Questioner Same with chromium? Brandon Sanderson Yeah. Questioner So it actually gets rid of the metals? Brandon Sanderson It actually trans-- It does a-- matter, energy, investiture are the same things in the cosmere. You have some sort of transfer happening relating to those things. Questioner The question sort of relates to metal poisoning-- Brandon Sanderson Yeah, you would not get metal poisoning after that. Calamity Seattle signing (Feb. 17, 2016) _________________________________________________ Overlord Jebus Is all Investiture in the cosmere associated with a Shard? Brandon Sanderson Yes, well, okay. So this is a complicated one. *pauses* So, Investiture predates the Shattering of Adonalsium, all Investiture was from Adonalsium, all Investiture got assigned to one of the 16 Shards when Adonalsium was Shattered. Some of the Investiture was not on Yolen but location is irrelevant. So Investiture is related to Shards even on planets where none of the Shards are inhabiting. Overlord Jebus Are they aware of that Investiture? Brandon Sanderson That's part of the whole seeing into the infinite, being beyond even the power of a Shard. So, technically you could make the argument that Harmony could feel the sense of Preservation on every world in the cosmere, right? Because the building blocks of all life and creation are these things. Overlord Jebus So the Shard of Preservation embodies all preservation in the cosmere? Brandon Sanderson Yes but he just can't do that, right? Like, he's not infinite. The Vessels are not, even if their minds are enormously expanded by holding a Shard, they are not infinite. The Connection is all there in the Spiritual Realm Oathbringer London signing (Nov. 28, 2017) _________________________________________________ Questioner With Shards, are there any... limits? What can't they do? Besides being opposed by another Shard and their own intent? Brandon Sanderson It varies a lot. It varies based on experience and situation. They are not omnipotent, though the power is infinite. So that is the weird part that you get into. So, they are limited partially by their own limitations, and also the limitations imposed upon them by the situations they're in. Questioner Is there anything universal about all of them? Brandon Sanderson They all have bits of them in all of the cosmere, so that's universal. They all are bounded more by themselves than by the power itself. Skyward Chicago signing (Nov. 16, 2018)

Wear does the black smoke go ?
Eternal Khol replied to twenty second of the sun's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Its corrupted breath, or just corrupted investiture in general now that he's not on Nalthis. so i think he just corrupts whatever investiture he gets. on Roshar he’s leaking corrupted Stormlight. Brandon Sanderson Anyway, Nightblood is named for the smoke he leaks, and he originally had a different name when he was created. Vasher himself dubbed the sword Nightblood after he had used it to kill the woman he loved. The blackness that leaks out is actually corrupted and consumed Breaths, the ones that Nightblood leeches off anyone who draws him. Warbreaker Annotations (April 25, 2011) -
he was a "bad king" but with good intentions. he was just never really meant for the throne. the best leaders aren't usually raised as such they come from normal people who have had to claw their way to the top. starting off as "nothing" and then working their way up to "something" lets them get to personally see both sides of the coin. because of that they'll have a deeper understanding of how the Country or Kindom runs. theyll be more sympathetic with the commoners while also being more wary of the "games" that the people of rank play

Tanavast is in there somehwere. i dont think hes "sleeping" or anything but he is effectively half-spren now, which would make things weird. i dont think merging with the Stormfather was supposed to make the Stormfather more like Tanavast but make him more Cognizant and give him a better understanding of Humans and give him more Connection to help out future Bondsmiths Cultivation clearly sees parts of Tanavast in the Stormfather from the WoB below, and the stormfather thinks the same of Cultivation as Honor did. in OB, the stormfather says that Cultivation is a Coward for "hiding" so does that mean thats how Tanavast felt? Stormfather in OB: "During these days, Honor still lived. I was not yet fully myself. more of a storm. less interested in men" WeiryWriter What are Cultivation's feelings with regards to the Stormfather? Brandon Sanderson Cultivation's feelings... Cultivation is, *long pause* I just have to decide how I can say things that are not spoilers. Cultivation-- The Stormfather reminds her of certain things about someone else she knew, and she feels the same way about the Stormfather in some ways as this person that she knew. JordanCon 2014 (April 11, 2014) ChocolateRob (paraphrased) What does the Stormfather think of Cultivation? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) He thinks the same as Honor thinks. Footnote: Brandon did give ChocolateRob a RAFO card along with his answer. Manchester signing (Aug. 6, 2014)

How to render a Shard as harmless as possible?
Eternal Khol replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well not all Shards are diametrically opposed, but it really also depends on the Vessels PoV. If the two Vessels view their Intents as opposed or if the Vessels dislike/hate each other then there should be a sort of natural friction between the pairs investiture -
I love this. like they’re only regression is loss of noodles XD

Why did Hoid... (Oathbringer spoilers)
Eternal Khol replied to aneonfoxtribute's topic in Stormlight Archive
It was because his Yolish Lightweaving wasnt fully functional after the shattering and the Rosharan Lightweaving is the closest to the Yolish variant So he can now do more with Lightweaving now that he has both forms in OB(before he bonded his spren)he needed Shallan to help him fully create the Wandersail illusion(i think it was wandersail?) Stormlightning If Hoid could have picked to join any order of the Knights Radiant, regardless of the Oaths he had to swear, just the powers, would he have picked Lightweaver? Brandon Sanderson He would have. Stormlightning Tell me more! Brandon Sanderson Lightweaving matches him very well, he's quite familiar with it and experienced with it. He's very good at using it and he likes it. It's the fulfillment of a long, long quest of his to finally get full access to Lightweaving. Stormlightning Even though he had some sort of Lightweaving? Brandon Sanderson He did have some sort of, yes. He's a very very happy Hoid. FanX 2018 (Sept. 7, 2018) ————————————————————— Stormlightning Where you *inaudible* Hoid as a Lightweaver in Era 2? Brandon Sanderson Hoid was a Lightweaver in Dragonsteel. Stormlightning I mean a spren Lightweaver. Unless the timeline's still, really-- Brandon Sanderson Meaning was I planning for him to become a Lightweaver? Stormlightning Before Era 2 since we thought Era 2 was going to be Era 3. Brandon Sanderson Hoid has never quite stopped being a Lightweaver. He is very happy to be fully empowered with things. Stormlightning Does that mean he was not fully a Lightweaver? Brandon Sanderson You will find out someday. His magic was not fully functional, but he was Lightweaving in Way of Kings Skyward release party (Nov. 6, 2018) -
How Invested are Yolish Dragons?
Eternal Khol replied to Honorless's topic in Sanderson Curiosities & Unpublished Works
1.Frost has some way of watching other worlds. 2.hoid knows about this. 3.hoid is also good at reading people. conclusion: Hoid looked into Frosts eyes and read in Frost’s face, that Frost already knew, based on his reaction, or lack thereof. Hoid, smart enough to put 2 and 2 together, deduced that Frost already knew because he was using his “technique” to watch somehow. also ”The pupils were rimmed with a silver far too metallic to be natural, at least for a human. “ Hoid indicates that silvery pupils are natural for dragons, like their pupils are always like that. how would hoid know that Frosts pupils were silvery because he was “watching” as opposed to just being silvery like they always are? -
How Invested are Yolish Dragons?
Eternal Khol replied to Honorless's topic in Sanderson Curiosities & Unpublished Works
Again, he realized, because hoid is one if the oldest people in the cosmere, and can probably read people like no other. you can look into someones eyes and instantly know something(even in this world) and he didn’t “have a reaction specifically to the silvery substance” He had a reaction to something he saw in Frosts face, which just so happened to also detail Frosts silvery eyes. just because Hoid noted his eye color, and there just so happens to be a magical component to that eye color, it doesn’t mean that thats how Frost knew its coincidental correlation. Just because 2 things happened at the same time, doesnt mean they’re related. who knows, maybe both of us are right, maybe neither ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
How Invested are Yolish Dragons?
Eternal Khol replied to Honorless's topic in Sanderson Curiosities & Unpublished Works
Thats not what i got out of it. i think Hoid was just looking into his eyes to read his emotions just like he might with anyone else Hoid was just noting what his eyes looked like when he did it which for Dragon are a nice metallic silver -
The core intent will always be the same. He can kind of “warp” the Intent, so to speak, but his intent will always be Odium but since he perceives it as “Passion”(or part of him does) the Shard itself(and the way we see it manifest) is bound to act different than if someone else held Odium and perceived it to be and understood it as Odium. Odium will always be Odium, but since he believes he’s Passion, in a way he kind of is(because thats how he perceives himself) and the Shard reacts to that Thats my take on it anyway
