  1. They still swear Ideals, though. (In fact, I think the fact that even the "unchained" Radiants like Dalinar go through the process provides further evidence that the concept is intrinsic, because even with Honor's restrictions falling away, it's still there.) Because it doesn't make sense to me for two of the magic systems on Roshar to be their own thing (Surgebinding and fabrials) and yet the third to only be a variation of one of the first two, and because apparently Voidbinding is a "cousin" to the Nightwatcher's Old Magic, which is a spren who is in the Physical Realm using their powers. (More specifically, I think that traditionally, Voidbinding was mostly just what the Unmade can do when kept awake by their bond to Odium, hence being a "cousin" to the Nightwatcher's boon and curse because they're both just big spren in the PR doing what they do, but that Enlightened spren and perhaps ordinary Voidspren can do similar things when held in the Physical Realm by a bond.)
  2. Honestly, the Sibling probably didn't exist during the First Desolation. They were made for the war against Odium, to unite the humans and spren. And spren bonding humans was a surprise that didn't come until partway through the Desolations. So in my opinion it's likely they weren't created until Nohadon's time, especially with the “Though many wished Urithiru to be built in Alethela, it was obvious that it could not be. And so it was that we asked for it to be placed westward, in the place nearest to Honor.” quote (Alethela was Nohadon's kingdom, and we know the Radiants used The Way of Kings as a guide).
  3. Access to the Surges in some capacity does predate the oaths, yes. Access via sapient spren bonding human beings in a fashion that possibly significantly merges the spiritwebs in order to grant vast levels of power, not necessarily. In my opinion, the oaths are mainly needed due to the depth of the bond, in order to align the souls properly so that they don't push each other out. [Mistborn, for some more explanation of the mechanics I'm thinking of] Agreed, I think this is decently likely. Though, I like the theory that Voidbinding is something that spren of Odium do after being pulled into the Physical by a bond rather than something the person does, like how Glys uses Stormlight to recreate the visions, as opposed to just being the exact same thing as Radiance but with different powers.
  4. This is a theory, but not confirmed.
  5. Plus, we see the highstorm in Shadesmar, and it definitely does not look at all the same (or seem to have a true Perp at all).
  6. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. A thought: What if, just as a Connector can exploit these kinds of "holes", a Bondsmith can too, and so a Bondsmith could hypothetically break into and control a Voidspren or Fused?
  7. I dunno if they're super knowledgeable, but they have some fabrials (like spanreeds) with Enlightened spren to work while the suppression is on, so they seem to have some knowledge. Yeah, it's so weird.
  8. Good question for sure, but the Fused have... weird knowledge. For example, they somehow know about how spren fabrials work despite not even having known spren could be trapped until it happened to Mishram, and apparently Raboniel is familiar with how the Sibling's suppressor works at the start of the book. So it seems they're getting information from somewhere. (Also like... they saw Dalinar open a Perpendicularity. Probably shocked them quite a bit lmao, considering how much it shocked the Stormfather and Odium himself.) Ooh, I think this is plausible. A subtlety that a lot of people miss in theorizing on this is that, as far as we know, Dalinar didn't make Shallan's Lightweaving stronger, he just sorta plugged in Connection from the Stormfather in place of the normal Connection a Lightweaving uses as a seed. The idea of a more specific target for a Lashing fits nicely in that vein, though.
  9. Well, do we know that they'd be this scared of a chained Bondsmith? It might be because they don't have experience with an unchained Bondsmith and so have no idea what his limits are. This seems less tied to the order and more the individual Radiant. When Eshonai was bonded to Timbre, the Stormfather remarks on accepting her oaths (though we don't actually hear it), and she hears the Rhythm of War snap into harmony at one point, the way Venli hears Cultivation and Odium snap into harmony.
  10. I'm actually not so sure on that. When using the Bands, Wax and Marasi can see the very souls of things, and when burning duralumin with his atium, Elend saw Kelsier in the Cognitive (and we know electrum alone can get this moment too, just harder). I don't think it's outside reason a Fullborn could Compound nicrosil to reach a similar point and work out what the minimum power needed is to perform one of those two things (assuming Connection manipulation can't get you in there, which is not fully certain with how much RoW talks about Connection to the various Realms).
  11. I've thought about this before but never ran across that WoB, nice find! I think it's very plausible. If Threnody is Invested so heavily from the fight that people can just... become Cognitive Shadows all the time, it's probably Invested enough that the Realms are very close. Ooooooh nice catch, I assumed it was just due to being more recent but that's very plausible imo. Interestingly, while they aren't fully solid, they actually partially are (moreso than Syl who can barely lift a leaf, anyway): With how they change in appearance (white with green eyes to black with red eyes, iirc?), I've wondered whether perhaps shades are made of two kinds of Investiture (Mercy and Ambition? Ambition and Odium?), but they aren't truly harmonized, and so when certain actions are taken that align much more with one Intent than the other, it sort of temporarily shifts the internal balance of control in favor of that one, and with as mindless as they are, if one of those Intents is violent...
  12. I think this is probably in large part due to the fact that the storm is meant to put Investiture into things, while the mists are meant to stick around and perform a specific task Leras left for them. Singers taking forms, chasmfiends pupating, etc requires being out in a highstorm and taking in Stormlight into their gemheart. Or, the way Zahel describes it, the storms are "Invested to the hilt and looking for a place to stick it all". So when Stormlight is pulled through, it's Intended to be taken in and Invest things and be used, in a way that the mists are not, and you can take advantage of this in ways that weren't originally expected by Ado when they initially set the whole system up.
  13. Didn't they kidnap people who had strong bloodlines but weren't actually Allomancers (like Steris)? Or were most of them actual Allomancers and they just messed up with her? I can't remember.
  14. Yeah that was the one question I asked where I was like "yeah this is an almost certain RAFO" but not complaining
  15. Spending far far too much time overthinking everything and coming up with so many wrong theories some of them eventually stick
  16. Eh, from what Brandon says that's not quite how that works.
  17. Rather short update this week: Defiant is at 66%, Alcatraz 6 will likely come out late summer 2022, Reddit thread for the spoiler stream is up, and Brandon started a poll about whether he should open a Patreon. First, as mentioned, Adam made a Reddit thread taking questions for the upcoming spoiler stream. The moderators on the subreddit have put the thread into Contest Mode for now, which randomizes sort order and hides vote counts, to give every comment a fair chance. On Thursday morning this will be lifted, so that Adam can find the most-upvoted ones. As a reminder, the spoiler stream is this Thursday, December 16th, at 6PM Mountain Time, and will be on on Brandon's YouTube channel. Second, Alcatraz 6 is likely coming late next summer. In the leadup to this, Tor will be re-releasing the previous books with new covers, with the first coming out spring 2022 ( you can find the cover in our previous roundup). Next, Brandon is considering making a $5-a-month Patreon for behind-the-scenes content such as weekly annotations on chapters of his books (in a video format, unlike the old annotations). However, he's hesitant to do so, as a.) he's unsure how many people would be interested, and b.) he isn't a small creator and doesn't really need that income, so he and Adam want to poll the community. You can vote on that in this Google Form, and comment on the YouTube video if a yes-or-no answer doesn't cut it. Lastly, the WoTaHoliday event, run partially by our staff member @Cheyenne Sedai, raised over ten-and-a-half thousand dollars for Brandon's Lightweaver Foundation! Thank you to everyone who participated, and the archives can be found on YouTube. What do you think of the Patreon idea? Ordinarily I'd say to discuss in the comments below, but feedback on this article won't make its way back to Brandon, so instead, please vote in the poll (positive or negative) and discuss it on the YouTube video!
  18. Technically, it only specifies current Vessels, so we don't know about Tanavast, Aona, or Skai. (Could also be Sho Del.) But yeah it lends some weight to that argument for sure.
  19. Been a while, but it's finally time for another news roundup! A new cover for the first Alcatraz book has been revealed, the timing for the spoiler stream has been released, and a whole bunch of smaller projects have been announced! First things first, the obligatory percentage bar update: Defiant is currently about 55% of the way done. Next things next, Brandon will be doing a full spoilers livestream on December 16th, at 6pm Mountain Time. Generally, Brandon's assistant Adam will make a post on /r/brandonsanderson the day of to gather questions, as well as putting out a tweet and taking questions from chat. (If you're on the 17th Shard Discord server, we've used the fancy new events feature to display it in your local time and send a reminder when it's about to happen.) Additionally, during the stream he will be announcing the winners for the Twelve Workdays of Christmas giveaways his team is running. Each weekday, a keyword is being posted on his social media pages that you can put in the subject line of an email to [email protected] to enter a giveaway for various prizes, such as signed books and merch. Next up, the cover for the trade paperback edition of Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians has been revealed! New Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians cover by Justin Gerard. We don't know when exactly the new edition will come out, but the full series is expected to be released with new covers over the next year or so in the leadup to the final book. (However, that is a very tentative timeline that has changed before, so take it with a grain of salt.) In other news, there were some exciting announcements at the recent Dragonsteel Mini-Con (thanks @Use the Falchion for their report, as few Shard staff were present): Lux is planned to be a trilogy, but this is not set in stone yet Dan Wells is writing the novelization for Dark One, but it is not following the outline of the graphic novel Janci Patterson, along with her friend Darci Cole, will be writing more Skyward Flight novellas after the success of the first few, with one likely following Kimmalyn The White Sand omnibus is finished and they are working things out with the publisher, hope is to get it out next year Isaac is about halfway through a story following Nikki Savage (an adventurer in the Mistborn Era 2 broadsheets) tentatively called Boatload of Mummies Brandon also dropped a few interesting things during one of his SandoWriMo posts: A Mistborn film is in development, but this sort of thing has been happening for years so it does not indicate anything solid yet A screenwriter is currently working on another of his properties (he didn't say which), but once more nothing certain He's working with a video game company for something, but it's unknown what they're working on and in what capacity he's involved Also, for those watching the Wheel of Time show and interested in some of Brandon's behind-the-scenes thoughts, he's put out a few discussion posts on /r/WoT. He and Dan also discussed it on the most recent episode of their podcast Intentionally Blank. Lastly, going forward the leather in Brandon's leatherbounds will look a bit different, as it turns out the previous line they were using was named Corona, and for some mysterious unguessable reason got discontinued recently. Isaac has tried to find something that looks as close to the same as possible, but they're not quite identical. Comparisons at various angles can be found in the YouTube video where it was announced. As always, Brandon's own Weekly Update videos can be found on his YouTube channel, with transcripts on his blog. What do you think of the new cover? Which project are you most excited for? Which book would you most like to see adapted? Let us know in the comments below!
  20. I think 2 is the most likely, followed by 1, with the whole resurrection and second chance theme that Brandon tries to build into.... pretty much every single Cosmere novel. To quote Brandon on this topic: And even the non-Cosmere stories have this as an important element too, it's a theme Brandon really likes examining. So I think that's probably the route he will go. (Note that this is not necessarily the same thing that I would consider the best option in-world, but it strikes me as the most Brandon and more specifically most Cosmere option.)
  21. Agreed, just pointing out his PoV doesn't actually settle it.
  22. True enough The pulses also probably are something originating in the user affecting the enemy, and might even work sorta similarly to copper in that it's emanating rhythms (depending on how exactly copper does what it does, that's meant to be framed as a theory not fact). Honestly brass and zinc are the ones that are hardest for me to remember, because the intuition I use for the rest is kinda "Pulling is less active and/or more defensive, Pushing is more active and/or more offensive" (pulling into yourself, vs pushing at someone else), but to me Rioting and Soothing break that idea. Yeahhhh I have no idea what's up with those This is where the defensive/inactive vs offensive/active crutch helps me keep track, thinking of the way Wayne goes out and uses his bubbles to attack, whereas Marasi uses hers to wait for help. Lol understandable. I am exhaaaausted right now, so I'll have to come back to the deeper theorizing stuff tomorrow, because as interesting as it is I can barely read what the words say, let alone what they mean The interesting thing here is the rhythms, because there's patterns that indicate whether a metal falls into the internal category or external one (though this doesn't mean they haven't slightly misunderstood what it actually is, and it means something subtly different from "internal/external"). (An interesting note here is that atium does share a pattern with the temporal metals, which I might've actually brought up in the main post now that I think about it but am too lazy to check lol.)
  23. But was that "healing" in the usual Cosmere sense (aligning the aspects with each other), or was that just a Shard directly rewriting the spiritweb to be the way they wanted it to be instead? I tend to lean towards the latter.
