Good point. Hm, maybe. I go back and forth. Depends on how much affecting a Splinter can actually directly affect the parent Shard, I think. Oh hm, I didn't consider that idea before. I like it, especially because I'm a proponent of the theory that Ba-Ado-Mishram was essentially trying to launch a coup with the False Desolation, making herself the god of the singer forces instead of Odium, and so I could see Odium subtly pushing it as a way to do all of wounding the spren, driving the end of the Radiants, and tying up a loose end. I'm definitely curious now. (The way Ulim speaks of the event makes it seem that BAM was doing that to me, at least.) It reminds me of how Sja-anat wants "to be a god unto herself", and the way Ulim speaks of it as a bad decision made by the Unmade makes me question whether they had approval for it.

Theory on Thaidakar's future (RoW Revisit)

Yeah this is a rather interesting bit. Going off WoBs, it seems like atium is not normal for a godmetal in that it can't just be burned by any Allomancer/any person, so I'm definitely curious what's up with it.- 18 replies

Theory on Thaidakar's future (RoW Revisit)

Iirc, it's that one type of Misting was swapped out for atium Mistings (he's gone back and forth on which, last we heard it was aluminum but there was an asterisk that the question was "making assumptions", so who knows what's up with the specifics), so my guess is that they were supposed to go "hey there's sixteen metals, but only 15 Misting types being Snapped, what's up with these other people?" and eventually work it out (maybe originally they knew atium was special and this knowledge got lost?), but it's... not really clear and that's just my best guess at what he intended.- 18 replies

Wonder if that's why Pattern's doing his little hum before agreeing. Yeah that's a good question. Maybe Testament didn't want to draw attention to the fact that that was by no means at all a solution, and so waited until she was out of sight rather than disappearing right in front of him and making him try and come up with a more permanent measure (not that I can think of much he actually could've done to a spren lol, but the situation was a mess and she might not want to make it messier)? I dunno.

Theory on Thaidakar's future (RoW Revisit)

How would sixteen be related to the Dawnshard, though? Eh, I don't feel it does make much sense. Honor directly says that the humans don't have the Dawnshards, it'd be odd if all along it was in his child spren thing or something and he just didn't know. And I don't see any signs of anything weird that's not already pretty easily explained by other factors. But that's it's own thread probably.- 18 replies

Jam-packed Weekly Update this time! Brandon has released his schedule for FanX later this week, and the second draft of The Lost Metal has hit 70%. Cool stuff, wonder if there's anything else. I think that was all of it, right? Yeah that should be the las- fine, fine, I'll stop dragging it out. Biggest news (and reason this article is late ) is, we finally have details about the Dragonsteel Mini-Con! You can learn more about that in our article. Getting the smallest update out of the way first, the second draft of The Lost Metal is 70% done (that's the last draft before the book goes out to the beta readers). Progress will probably be slower this week due to the topic of the next announcement, but he is still on track to finish this draft late September or early October. In case you've missed it, the final version of the book is expected to release fall 2022. Next up, Brandon's schedule for FanX later this week has been released. Thursday, September 16th: Writing a Successful Series in Science Fiction and Fantasy 6:00PM in 250A Signing 7:00PM at Booth 1518 Friday, September 17th: Writers of the Future: Learn How to Engage Readers 1:00PM in 355B Intentionally Blank: The Brandon and Dan Podcast 3:00PM in 250A Signing 6:00PM at Booth 1518 Saturday, September 18th: Brandon Sanderson Spotlight Panel 4:00PM in 250A Signing 5:00PM at Booth 1518 Last but certainly not least, information on the Dragonsteel Mini-Con is finally out! As mentioned, we made a separate post about that you can read to find out more. Will you be attending either of these cons? Which one(s) and why? Feel free to discuss in the comments below, or in the #events channel on our Discord server! The full Weekly Update video is of course on Brandon's YouTube channel as well as below, and the transcript will be on his blog when done.

Update September 17th (again): As of 2PM MDT, the online store has been reopened , this time on the main store page to avoid the bugs encountered with the other website. Update September 17th: Due to some major technical issues, the online store has been temporarily shut down (ticket registration is unaffected). Make sure to watch Dragonsteel Books on their social platforms to find out when it reopens, and check the email you used for the order to see if you were affected by the bug. The original article follows below. Dragonsteel has finally announced details about the new Dragonsteel Mini-Con, being held just in time for Cytonic's release! Full details can be found on the official site, but we'll summarize the biggest pieces of information below. First, though, it must be noted that while COVID-19 vaccination and masks are requested, neither is required for attendees. Attendees who may be sick or diagnosed with COVID-19 are requested to stay home, but are not barred from going. Additionally, Utah's case numbers are high right now, and with increased traffic through the area due to the Mini-Con and Thanksgiving week, this may inevitably increase. Make sure to weigh the risk factors of you and those around you carefully when deciding whether to attend, and to follow Dragonsteel Entertainment's requests–such as getting vaccinated and staying home if sick–if you decide to do go. You can find the full COVID policy on their website. If you would still like to attend, the Mini-Con will be held November 22-23, 2021, at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo, UT. Nearby hotels, restaurants, transportation, etc can be found on Explore Utah Valley's page for the event. In addition to the various panels, there will be a spoiler Q&A for attendees on Monday, and on Tuesday, Brandon will hold a presentation and Q&A to celebrate Cytonic on the eve of its release–November 23rd. Admittance to this event will be available through a number of different ticket types. Free Pass: Entrance to Brandon’s Cytonic speech and Q&A, no guaranteed seating! Shipped Book Only ($20): Signed, stamped, and numbered Cytonic hardcover (shipped only), as well as online access to Brandon’s Cytonic speech and Q&A. Optional add-ons such as a personalization or swag can be purchased from the Mini-Con shop. Event Only Pass ($45): Access to the Dragonsteel Mini-Con and seating for the Cytonic speech. Swag items are not included but are available for purchase at the event. Book Event Pass ($65): Everything from the Event Only Pass, plus a signed, stamped, and numbered Cytonic hardcover (for pickup only), as well as one ticket for a drawing to meet Brandon. Swag Event Pass ($125): Includes everything from the Book Event Pass, plus a Cytonic Swag Bundle (shirt, stickers, bookmark, and pin) and Doomslug Plushie. VIP Event Pass ($200): Includes everything from the Swag Event Pass, plus an exclusive VIP check-in and book/swag pick-up, reserved seating for Brandon’s Cytonic speech and Q&A and exclusive VIP swag (what this VIP swag is is TBA). Known schedule: Preorders on the site open at noon MDT on Wednesday, September 15th. Dragonsteel Mini-Con will run from 1PM to 10PM on Monday, and from 10AM to midnight on Tuesday. Check-in will begin on Monday at 10AM. A spoiler Q&A will be held for con attendees Monday (time TBA). The Cytonic release presentation and Q&A will be held Tuesday and run from 7PM to 9PM. The exhibitor hall will be open Monday from 1PM–7PM, and Tuesday from 10AM to 10PM (but will be closed from 7PM to 9PM for the Cytonic presentation). This year, exhibitors will only be licensed partners of Dragonsteel Entertainment. The current, non-final list includes: Authors: Brian McClellan Dan Wells Charlie Holmberg Steven Bohls Eric James Stone Artists: Isaac Stewart Hayley Lazo Howard Lyon Bryan Mark Taylor Steve Argyle Merchandise partners: Dragonsteel Books Barnes & Noble Forged Foam Lightweaver Foundation Sanderson Collectors Guild The Black Piper Brotherwise Games What do you think? Will you be attending? Let us know in the comments below or in the thread in the Events forum!

The Evgeni Fanclub trailing you everywhere might be disruptive, though!

There's a bunch of types, yeah. Forms of power all bond different voidspren, iirc. And Ulim and Yixli are two different types of sapient ones.

Afaik, it doesn't line up with any of the polestones. Milky white, hard to distinguish from the bone marrow.

I go back and forth on this, tbh. I think currently, I lean towards it being inherent to Investiture (that or implied as part of the Intent behind all four), being required for it to interpret and carry out the Commands in the first place, but I don't feel strongly on it.
-
Allomancy doesn't require that (see: Kelsier), just genetic chance.

I haven't settled on a specific full theory, so gonna put this one out just for discussion: recently, I've liked to consider the idea of a kind of "Choose" Command with: Autonomy: obvious how this would fit Honor: Brandon's said that Honor is not just rules, but specifically choosing to be bound by rules that you would not have to be bound by if you didn't want to. And the Stormfather has his thing about how oaths are the mark of intelligence and free will, for the same reason, that Honor is rules you choose to take upon yourself willingly. So Honor could make sense as part of this, perhaps. Endowment: Not only is it gifts given of your own will, but apparently the reason Breath can be taken off-world is because gifts come without strings attached is part of the nature of Endowment and so a lot of the Connection that could hold it back is removed. This idea that ultimately, the gifts cannot come with requirements or restrictions, but also can only be given if one wants to give it, is a very free-will-oriented version of the idea. Though again, this is merely an idea I've liked but haven't fully thought through, and am curious to see other takes on. Tbh I'd be incredibly shocked if Ruin were anything but CHANGE, with how much it's been emphasized that that idea is the true core behind it.

Most honorable characters I've seen. Szeth & Kaladin
LewsTherinTelescope replied to Shinwarrior's topic in Stormlight Archive
Tbf, honorable is not always the same as Honorable (see: what you mention about Tanavast's actions once he was losing himself). I'd agree Kaladin's more honorable, but would argue Szeth was more Honorable with his code (though Kal's not exactly flexible either lol). -
Just finished Rithmatist
LewsTherinTelescope replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in The Rithmatist
Yeah, he generally deals with it much better than a lot of authors. Doesn't use it nearly as often, and when it does happen there's often good reason. But I've seen it overused poorly so many times I just have a greatly annoyed gut reaction even when it's on its own perfectly reasonable Not even ace or aro myself, though I imagine it's something a lot of people who are will relate to, but most of my close friends are female and I'm male, and so the way people act about that stuff to our faces has made things real awkward to hang out in public sometimes. Neither me nor my friends really appreciate being told by people who barely know us that I'm just trying to get in their pants, y'know? (Though there's the occasional upside like that time a restaurant gave a friend and I a free slice of cake because they assumed guy + girl at table = a date, lol. But one or two slices of cake doesn't really outweigh the downsides.) So I'm always happy when a guy and a girl can just be good close friends in a story. Bonus points if they can be strong platonic friends the entire time without romantic tension ever even entering the picture, instead of it having to be the resolution to a love triangle lmao. (Which is another trope where Brandon's mostly been more reasonable with the way he uses it, at least.) Oh nice, you have more info on it posted anywhere? Doubt this comment in particular is gonna push that one over the edge But yeah, I imagine at the very least it's something he's thought about and weighed, and I do hope he ends up deciding not to go the relationship route with them. (Though amusingly, if it does go that route it's probably one of the relationships where I'd have the fewest complaints about it lol. But in a way that makes me want it to remain platonic more, because just because it could be a romantic relationship and even a good one at that doesn't mean it has to or even that it would be better off that way. Not every friendship is just because "it wouldn't work out if it was romantic so we had to settle for platonic", sometimes either route would likely go perfectly fine and they just don't mind it being the way it is because close friends are important too.) Hmm I think this maybe, just maybe, is a topic that's kind of a sore spot for me lmao -
Personally I don't think so, because their power isn't just "fire", it's Division (and Abrasion), and fire is an effect it can cause, so I don't think its effect would quite line up with that. I don't think any of the orders will have something that directly lines up with Soothing or Rioting, but I could see certain Surges allowing manipulation of certain emotions that align with their category.

Theory on Azure's blade [updated with RoW]
LewsTherinTelescope replied to Benkinsky's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Imo, if they became a Radiant they'd be able to sort of "plug in" Stormlight in a way similar to what one can do with the mists, like how Venli is able to take Voidlight due to being a Regal (presumably that's why, anyway) but can use it for Surgebinding due to the similarity in the way it and Stormlight work as fuel. But I doubt they'd be able to breathe in Stormlight without a bond, any more than they can breathe in the mists without whatever happened with Vin.- 16 replies

We do know that the Everstorm seems to allow escaping Braize, because that was how Ulim got to Roshar (he came out through the storm before it even got moved up to the Shattered Plains). So might just be that. (Unclear how exactly it works.)

Wasn't super clear to me whether that meant he had gotten it from 40% to 50%, or if he was saying it went from 50% to 60%, so I went with what the graphic onscreen said. Yep, was updated further yesterday (day after the Weekly Update). Which might resolve the question of which was meant, but might also just mean he did another 10% over the weekend Agreed, looks great and is more consistent with the other short books. Wonder if they'll get a new cover for Secret History if they print a hardcover or not.

LewsTherinTelescope replied to Shinwarrior's topic in Stormlight Archive
Brandon's actually mentioned before that the "honorspren" title is a self-identification and there are valid arguments both sides have for which of the two kinds are truly closer to Honor.
