  1. Eh, I would say "manipulate" would be a more accurate word, though I would instead say "manipulates the effect of their Surgebinding" than saying he directly manipulates the Surge himself. It's not like Shallan is more powerful when making the map, for example, she on her own is capable of creating a crazy amount of Lightweaving if she needs to. But Dalinar does essentially plug a Connection into it that it uses as a source.
  2. After skipping last week due to assistant Adam being on a well-earned vacation, Brandon is back again with another Weekly Update, and I'm back again with another summary! First things first (well, it's a third thing really, but that's besides the point), Brandon has finished his draft of Evershore, aka the third of Janci Patterson's Skyward novellas set between Starsight and Cytonic. The novella—which follows Jorgen—will now be sent back to Janci for further editing, and is likely to release shortly after Cytonic itself comes out on November 23rd. In case you missed the last update, the first novella (titled Sunreach and following FM) will release late September or early October, and the second (titled ReDawn and following Alanik) should release sometime between Sunreach and Cytonic. They will initially only be available in audio and eBook formats, but a print collection is planned for sometime 2022. This is not the only writing he's been working on, however. He has returned to editing and revising the long-awaited conclusion to the Wax and Wayne series (often referred to as Mistborn Era 2), and so the second draft of The Lost Metal now sits at 50% on the progress bar. It is set to release Fall 2022. Last but certainly not least, Brandon has a new poll for you! His store has run out of copies of The Emperor's Soul, but before they reprint it, they would like input on how to do so. The first option is that they simply reprint the current edition of the book, with the original cover. Alternatively, they have been considering reprinting it in a shorter hardcover style, fitting alongside Edgedancer and Dawnshard on the shelf, and giving it a new cover inspired by that of the Graphic Audio edition. You can drop a vote for your pick via the Google Form, or follow this link to view the current tally. As always, the full Weekly Update video (which you can watch below) has been uploaded to Brandon's YouTube channel, and the full transcript will eventually be up on his blog when it's finished. Which cover did you vote for? Which of the three Skyward novellas has you most excited? Be sure to drop a comment below and tell us why!
  3. To me, this would undo essentially the entirety of his character arc, imo. His two greatest struggles have been his sometimes-suicidal depression and him giving too much of himself trying to save people, and I feel like that would undo his entire thing with learning to handle those more healthily.
  4. I don't think we know he's worked with any other Shards, do we? Only WoB I know on the subject is intentionally super open-ended.
  5. My theory's that either it's a representation of her Identity, or relates to how she has the power to unmake that I don't think we've seen evidence of the others having, personally.
  6. Yeah, it's a character who appears in one of the Rysn interludes and briefly in Dawnshard.
  7. We actually have a basic Akinah map, courtesy of Kabsal: There's some basic similarities but overall I don't think I'd say it indicates anything more than coincidence, personally. But that's not the first place Aons have been theorized on Roshar, so who knows, might be something weird going on.
  8. Yeah, iirc Formless's pronouns go from she to he to they and back again depending on the specific scene. I've taken it to emphasize its, well, formlessness, but that was definitely a theory that popped up that for a time I also thought might be the case. There's one single minor character lol, there's plenty to praise SA for but I dunno if any form of queer representation is really it.
  9. Might also be that it would require expending too much focus and Cultivation would be able to attack him, like how he couldn't Splinter the Stormfather fully without opening himself up.
  10. If I choose Awakener, do I get to just Ascend because of getting infinite Investiture?
  11. Tbf, most Ideals haven't been explicitly accepted in the text. (But Dalinar's have so far, yeah.)
  12. WoB is that it's partially based on the Shattering, but other more recent events were more influential.
  13. Worth noting that this is not universal. In my opinion, it's actually planet-based (Ruin and Preservation's magics are both sixteen-based, as is their hybrid, and the Rosharan system outside of Braize is all ten-based) and perhaps perception-based (Rosharans believe in ten Surges, but the inhabitants of Braize, the Fused, only believe in nine), as opposed to Shard-based, but that's just how I view it and is not confirmed afaik. Theory's definitely interesting, and I could see it. Something weird is up with them, at any rate.
  14. Oh yeah no I wasn't trying to argue against you, it's just one of those weird little things I'm far too obsessed with lol.
  15. This line is actually rather interesting to me, because the Terris religion is very strongly focused on Preservation being good and Ruin being bad — they have prophecies about the Hero as an heir to Preservation, the very name of the religion comes from their word for “to preserve” ("Terr"), their core tenet was about preserving over destroying, etc. So Leras ranting at Ati saying "you make our religion all about you"... doesn't actually make sense in the context of the Terris religion, and in fact is what Leras himself did to it. So is there a version of their ancient co-founded religion (likely on the southern continent, which seems to maintain to a large extent the idea of balance and the two Shards, though greatly twisted and changed and no longer really matching either) that is focused on Ruin?
  16. It says there's things she doesn't understand, but that "her memory was no longer full of holes".
  17. The two major religions of a few countries on Sel, it should be noted. The Dula religion is vaguely based on the Dor but doesn't seem to grasp its true nature, the Mysteries don't seem to have much to do with anything real besides in name, the MaiPon religion doesn't seem to be connected to the Shards at all (from the little we know), the dominant religion in the Rose Empire doesn't seem to have to do with the Shards at all (from the little we know), Shu-Keseg doesn't seem to have much to do with the Shards (its child religions vaguely align with the Intents, but don't really seem to have much to do with the actual Shards beyond that, and the base Shu-Keseg itself doesn't seem to align even in that way), etc.
  18. More specifically, it allows one to transcend the three Realms, being in all of them at once. Ordinarily this is only a bit, but when Elend burns duralumin and atium, he (fully?) sees the Spiritual Realm, along with seeing Kelsier in the Cognitive (we don't actually see that in his PoV, frustratingly, but it's pretty clear in SH).
  19. Sure, but generally people rebelling against a government are not considered to be representatives of said government.
  20. Except he clearly doesn't consider the listeners to have this authority, as he sided with the Fused when they returned but never really cared about the listeners or the parshmen in that regard. He considers the Dawnsingers, aka the Fused, to be the rightful rulers still. And with the exception of a few rebels, they side with Odium still, so I think both trains of logic will lead to him staying with Odium and the main body of Fused.
  21. The real question is whether you pronounce Vin's or Wax's names correctly...
  22. Supposedly she's worshiped more out in the west, though we haven't actually seen this yet despite Jasnah saying it so who knows
  23. His logic was a.) the Dawnsingers were there before they got conquered and b.) Odium killed Honor and won by right of conquest (yes, those two contradict each other, no, I don't know why Szeth claims "Nin's logic was sound"). Both of those would probably lead to him still siding with Odium, because the Fused are the Dawnsingers and most of them are with Odium, while the listeners are (from that perspective) just runaway rebels.
