  1. In addition to Moridin's quote, we get this in Rhythm of War: Your point about them being in the center of the Double Eye is definitely interesting, and as the WoB you included says, their powers are different in ways that are similar to how Bondsmith powers are different. So there does seem to be something special about them, but it doesn't sound like being pure Cultivation is it. It's also weird that Honor was able to impose oaths on that order's bonds. I mean, the book says one is purely of Cultivation while it's careful to say "almost" for honorspren, so presumably one is really purely of Cultivation, but something sorta odd is going on there. Could you elaborate on this? In Tanavast's flashbacks we see that he made the oaths, but I'm not sure if you're referring to something else on top of that.
  2. I think he probably just changed his mind. The whole idea of the Eelakin being offworlders doesn't seem to have been in the initial plan (the flashbacks are changed to make the mainland an inhospitable wasteland when in the original story it was plenty occupied, and the first readings of the sequel had "Tenth the Finder" being just the first dude who left to explore Patji and vanished rather than the final book having Cakoban as a mythical figure bringing their people to this land from across the endless sea), so I wouldn't be surprised if the idea of the humans gaining these culturally-poignant navigation powers is also new.
  3. Yep, Janci's confirmed the book's two PoVs are Arturo and Sadie!
  4. Blightfall, the first book in the new Riftwake trilogy by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson, will release on September 1st! Also: US and UK cover reveals, blurb, and a sample chapter. First off, what's happening? For those who may have missed this until now, Riftwake is a follow-up to the Skyward series, formerly known by the placeholder name Skyward Legacy. It's being co-written by Janci Patterson, co-author of the Skyward Flight novellas. However, Brandon and Janci have clarified that Blightfall is meant to serve as a new entry point, so you don't need to read all those other books first if you don't want to. (I think they're good though!) Context over, time for pretty pictures! Here's the Gollancz cover (UK): And the Delacorte cover (US): Also, Delacorte's first edition will have sprayed edges (shown below) and patterned endpapers (no picture provided): Next up, the description: Random House has also got an excerpt from the first chapter available, which you can read on their website. So yeah, book! (Outros are hard, don't @ me.)
  5. Oooh, I hadn't considered that. I'm guessing it's not mechanically the same, since Taravangian doesn't have a Tamu Kek, but the idea that she operates that way because it's how she's used to operating makes a ton of sense to me.
  6. I'm not sure of the alloy idea because of what Sazed says in the quote alder posted, but I do think it's interesting that when Wax puts the earring in he's drawn to Telsin rather than to Bavadin or some random avatar or torn between multiple places, and an engineer speaking to Telsin calls it "your metal". I wonder if it's specifically her "body" rather than generically Autonomy's and this is having some effects, a bit like how the Sibling can dismiss Surgebindings done with Towerlight because it's their Light and spren can reshape their Shardblade form because it's their essence. In fact, I sort of wonder whether Trell might have been built to manifest this metal, given how conveniently its uses align with exactly what the Set needs. (Telsin being an avatar rather than Splinter does potentially make it messier, but the Stormfather was able to bond people to grant Adhesion and Tension without Ascending them, so it does seem avatars can have some separation from the parent Shard in terms of magic.) This does in its own way clash a bit with the Harmony line, but I have an easier time imagining him overlooking a nuance like this in a topic he's probably not super deeply familiar with than imagining him missing that there's a separate other metal in there.
  7. I actually think the surge of bravery he gets is from Valor (although Odium definitely still appreciates it in its own way). Earlier in the book she was listed as the one Shard who Sazed thought might help, it comes right after ambiguous lines that might be someone speaking to Taravangian (a trick Brandon has used before), the description is written the same way existing Shardic descriptions are, and the bravery is italicized multiple times and then listed separately from the other emotions later for some reason. Plus, Wind and Truth puts a lot of emphasis on the "where is Valor?" question, suggesting in my opinion that she's more relevant to the story of Stormlight than the other Shards. The book also associates her with Endowment, who insists she's got a plan to handle Rayse and whose Returned created and brought a sword to Roshar that did in fact get used to kill Rayse in the same scene as the bravery moment. In that case, I think the Intent would be what's described there: From this I get the idea of sort of... "I am unbroken", kinda similar to the "valorous in the face of trials" proposal. The man charging an enemy army refuses to let fear define him. The woman fighting for her child leaves a legacy that will survive her death. The old man stepping into the darkness remains himself as he leaves on his own terms. Taravangian strikes down a god when asked to bow. There's this sense of celebrating staying true to who you are no matter the threat or your fate, almost a less harsh and more supportive/idealistic counterpart to Autonomy.
  8. Regarding Radiants, I think it's because of the nature of savantism (emphasis mine): If savantism is like an uncontrolled spren bond, then a Radiant in turn is like a "controlled savant", so to speak. I suspect becoming an uncontrolled savant would probably require breaking the guardrails on the bond itself, not just using the abilities more powerfully. Heralds are an interesting question, though. Perhaps the Honorblades being sapient allows them to regulate things more? Alternatively, it could have to do with something Tanavast says (W&T chapter 122): Maybe the Heralds' souls are already being slammed so hard by Honor that the Surges can't get a grip? I don't think this is savantism. It doesn't seem to have much to do with Tension or Cohesion imo, Nale has a similar superspeed ability despite having different Surges, and Taln doesn't have his Blade in that scene anyway. I think it's more related to the "powers of Roshar itself" that Tanavast mentions (W&T 120): Perhaps more specifically powers of the Old Magic, and in this case the Wind (W&T chapter 86): Brandon said at one point that while Heralds can have kids, it's not necessarily "in the traditional way": It's possible he's changed his mind on that, but he definitely had Shallan's relationship to Chana planned out for a while and thus probably outlined a way that Chana could have done the required alternate steps, so I'm inclined to think it's more just that Wind and Truth didn't have time to get into the details of the Davar kids' conception (yet?). We also see a difference between them and normal matter at the end of the book: the existing Heralds' bodies all evaporate, but Kaladin leaves behind a corpse with burnt-out eyes, which Ishar attributes to him still having his original body. It seems likely to me that the Investiture used to create the Heralds' bodies, while doing an excellent mimicry of matter, still ultimately is Investiture and can be recalled to its original form. (I'm unsure whether this is related to why the Heralds don't appear to suffer savantism or not, though.)
  9. Going by the below WoB about gaining resonances from the Bands, I think it's totally possible for them to develop a new resonance if they use God Metal alloy alongside their other power(s) enough, yeah.
  10. I don't think the red eyes are because Odium's corrupting a system but because Odium's corrupting their soul, not unlike how soulstamps give off red smoke when used on a living thing. Regal forms overwrite the individual's personality much more strongly than normal ones.
  11. Alas, Brandon's been asked a couple times what the zero point is but he doesn't remember without his notes. I'm sure the timeline maintainers would quite like to have it on there too if they could
  12. Brandon actually got asked about if Adonalsium has a God Metal recently, the tl;dr is he has one in the outline but he's not totally sure if it'll work, so we won't know for sure until Dragonsteel gets written. He also talked about how he defines a God Metal, sounds like there's some flexibility with some metals that are definitely magic but aren't necessarily the pure essence of a Shard/Ado. I'm guessing dragonsteel falls in this latter category.
  13. Crystals (Lucentia) are the Essence that lines up with "The Eyes", the fact it's specifically a diamond is icing on the cake.
  14. I think it's the same system as what El is doing. If we look at the Essence table we find that Lucentia = The Eyes and Foil = The Nails, and Moash's eyes were replaced with gems while El's carapace is replaced with metal. (Carapace isn't exactly fingernails, but irl they're both usually keratin on vertebrates, they both fulfill the same role of hard cover over skin, we see with the Herdazians' special fingernails that genetically they seem to work through the same pathways, and indeed for at least some forms their fingernails are carapace, so I'm comfortable proposing that for singers they might be perceived as conceptually the same thing.) Could be Voidbinding, but my guess is it's the third "series of abilities that is even more esoteric than the Voidbindings" alluded to by the Ars Arcanum. Diamonds, which notably in Essential Theology are associated with the eyes. My theory is actually compatible with this, since we've been told fabrials are part of the third system (though they seem to be in a grey area on whether they fully count or not).
  15. Well, Vasher and Shashara do seem to have ended up in control of Hallandren by the time of the Manywar. Maybe she was popular with the court as a princess and they seized the throne from her parents, or her parents died and they seized it from hypothetical still-living siblings?
  16. Some believe that, but Baon's got some obscene strength in sand mastery despite being a Darksider.
  17. My guess is a pure Investiture source, with the gun being their spren operating as basically a Division fabrial. There's absolutely zero proof for this, though, it's just what comes to my mind as the seeming simplest answer for how a Skybreaker with a gun might work.
  18. I agree it'll be someone besides Dalinar, but I actually predict Adolin will be the one to step into the Bondsmith role when it comes to whatever the countoff is leading to (not necessarily as a Radiant but more broadly a representation of cooperation and understanding). When Dalinar lists everyone (OB 119), guess who is the only "extra" person to appear in the entire section? Then when he lists those who show "true honor" (W&T 141) and can stop Retribution (W&T 142), it's the exact same people listed in the first paragraph. And Adolin's plot the past couple books has revolved around bringing people together and considering other viewpoints, not to mention ending this one by learning literacy by reading Oathbringer, the same book Dalinar learned literacy by writing.
  19. I don't think it's substantiation, Hoid describes it as "force projections attached directly to her cognitive element as it manifested in the physical realm". But both of those are probably a step toward the idea in the OP, agreed. I'd even say that Shallan manifesting Radiant's "body" is directly a basic form of this exact idea, albeit likely very restrictive in some ways.
  20. I think midnight is Blood. Re-Shephir has been associated with Lightweavers, Midnight Tressence feels a strong desire to drink blood, and a real blood/water aether would be problematic for the spore seas remaining spores. I wonder if we might get a thin oil or something (Tallow) as a spiritual replacement, maybe?
  21. Yelig-nar I think was a singer, hence why he makes you grow a gemheart & carapace. Re-Shephir I'm not certain which species, but Shallan gets the impression her mimicry is an attempt to recapture something she had lost (OB 32), so she was also probably once a person imo. I also think she's more intelligent than we give her credit for, since she was able to deliver information to the Fused about the Sibling's state (RoW 37).
  22. My suspicion here is the distinction between the mindless and minded Unmade is that the former are pure power while the latter are power granted to a person, and while this power is Rosharan and some of the people were singers, some were also Ashynite humans which makes the question tricky to answer. When Sja-anat isn't in her weird shadow form she looks like an ordinary human woman in archaic clothing, for instance (OB 84):
  23. Perhaps the most boring option, but seems like the official answer is just "Sigzil has not run the math".
  24. Marsh (TLM 28), Nomad (TSM 19), and Taravangian (W&T I-2) all refer to a galaxy. Either way I expect that the real number is on the lower end and Nomad is just leaving a big range because he hasn't done the math, though. He does say "perhaps", after all.
